@TimStone they're naming laws after businesses now. Wtf.
> "Discrimination is not tolerated in Texas. No business should be discriminated against simply because its owners pay to a church or the Salvation Army or any other religious organization,"
Discrimination against LGBT groups is fine of course
Like I don't even understand how you say that
I mean I do, it's called being a huge bigot being paid off by a food chain, but jfc

@Wipqozn Discrimination is not tolerated in Texas, so lets make a law in Texas that forces people to support Discrimination in Texas

I'm not sure what you mean, to be honest
I agree with the sentiment, but they do claim to lose $215M to fare evasion annually. Plus they used money they took from other people via asset forfeiture which is bad for different reasons but not in regard to breaking even tbf
@TimStone That does seem a realistic number. A ticket costs about 3 USD, and they have roughly 1.8B transits per year. So if 5% of people doesn't pay, that indeed means 215M lost
18:34
@TimStone I, don't believe this number but ok
It sounds reasonable from what @Nzall said, but if they already have 95% compliance that already underscores the absurdity of it
Seems like they could save 40m and get that money from elsewhere by making public transit free though idk
@Unionhawk ... where do you suggest they get 6 billion dollars a year from?
This is a list of notable corporations headquartered, current and historically, in New York City, New York. The table is arranged alphabetically by company, but can also be sorted by industry. == See also == List of New York companies Tech companies in New York City == References... ==
There are a number of different lists compiled by various publications around the world that attempt to determine the number of billionaires by world's major cities. == Forbes magazine == In 2015, Forbes Magazine listed New York City with the most billionaires at 78 persons, followed by Moscow with 68 billionaires, and Hong Kong in third place with 65 billionaires. The report also states that the US has the most billionaires per capita of any country. == Business Insider == Business Insider reported New York City maintaining its position as the world's top billionaire city with 103 billionaires...

@Unionhawk And if New York City is going to do a wealth tax or a big company tax or whatever, a LOT of those companies are likely to go elsewhere. You don't get rich and/or successful by putting up with high taxes
you're right I'm sure these companies would simply pick up their skyscrapers and move away from the financial capital of the world
let's criminalize the poor instead better things aren't possible
if I were the governor of a state I would simply set the corporate tax to 0 to convince huge companies to move away from new york city because tax rate is the only thing to consider when deciding to move hq and not population transportation infrastructure etc
Honestly that's why big taxes need to be implemented on the federal level.
Or even little taxes
Because it's one thing to move states...it's a whole nother thing to move countries
capital flight gets cited as the reason why things can never be better too often and I'm tired
it's too bad we have to keep a world financial system that allows huge companies to launder money freely through the city of london, Ireland, Bermuda, and the Cayman islands in order to claim that their headquarters is actually the internet which levies no tax
that's just a given that can't be changed
18:57
at some point people have got to stop saying "it can't be done" or "this won't work because of this" and start saying "well this is the problem with this idea, but when we do this, the problem is a little bit smaller...let's try it"
I don't know if anyone here has heard of The Venus Project but that is the single biggest problem with it: no one is willing to try it, which means any problems it has can't be worked out. The critics say "there is a loss of individualism" or "the citizens have too little voice in society" but they never offer a way to fix the problem and never get behind the idea of trying it to see if the problems they point out are actual problems...
...and if they are, how they can be fixed.

I'll give a tl;dr:
Syrian migrants in istanbul are being forced to return back to syria
many of them have families and jobs here
they will separate these families.
We may see concentration camps here in a short while.
Sadly I don't think that any group of people will organize against them. Many people, on both left and right, in lgbt circles, in progressive groups etc... sadly do hate syrians.
I will use my legal rights and speak up, but I don't think that anything will change. This is not okay.
@Ave to be clear: it's not all refugees (only those who are undocumented or are supposed to be in other cities), though it seems like that's the eventual plan.
@Ave what does "supposed to be in other cities" mean?
Ave
Ave
also s/migrants/refugees
@Elise You can only stay in the city you are given migrant status in.
@Ave huh, interesting

A friend of mine, an iraqi refugee, is forced to live in a small city because of this
she can visit when she comes over for hospital stuff and such
but she needs approval from a thing under UNHCR
do they provide housing and jobs in the city?
Ave

@Elise they pay you a small amount, you're supposed to find housing and food for that money.
@Ave that seems really stupid if they're not allowed to go to a different city
Ave
Ave
@Elise yeah. The article also mentions that the work permit is very hard to obtain for refugees.
And the "small amount"
The iraqi friend gets 750 TRY/mo.
To compare, I have a single room apt in istanbul and pay 1100 TRY/mo (plus hefty fees) for it, and my mom has a mid-sized house in Ankara and pays 1000 TRY/mo (plus fees) for it.
@Ave I bet. Here in Canada, to obtain a work permit, the company has to advertise a job position for at least 2 weeks on the government job site and then if no one applies, they are allowed to apply for the work permit. Unless you're a doctor, no employer is going through that trouble for you
you can't apply for an open work permit (afaik) and you need a job offer to apply
basically makes getting a work permit near impossible for anyone but the most demanded professions
