12:02 AM
I like using desktop site mode (if ya got Chrome)

12:33 AM
lol NRSC is slamming Kobach's Senate run because no one wants to back the guy who couldn't pull off the SoS -> governor scam

12:52 AM
That doesn't even make sense, they've had zero issue with antagonizing China up to this point

@TimStone but that was before Trump wanted to make it look like there's progress on the Trade War

Yeah, I suppose that's true

1 hour later…
user15026
@TimStone this is good, yes?

Yes!

2:28 AM
@TimStone i am skeptical though
> Still, Lam stopped short of saying she would formally withdraw the legislation after a historic wave of mass protest marches that drew hundreds of thousands of people into the Asian financial center’s streets.
and even if it was formally withdrawn, still can't help but thinking they'll try again but under another name after the protests have died down
the bill itself from my understanding it's really a bad thing, just that everyone can see China abusing the hell out of it
and it's not a stretch to assume that, the north western border (i believe) they already take your phone to install an app that downloads everything from it when you enter the country from what i have heard

3:03 AM
> "A strong economy is vital to maintaining a healthy environment," [Trump] said. "Punishing Americans is never the right way to produce a better environment or a better economy. We have rejected this failed approach and we are seeing great results."
unfortunately it doesn't work like that. someone is going to get "punished" as we try to clean things up no matter what

3:23 AM
@Memor-X pretty sure thats a great way to get the protests going again

3:45 AM
become ungovernable

4:40 AM
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, the Hong Kong protesters seem particularly organized, and the density helps
She should probably let checks notes Nancy Pelosi know

6 hours later…

Anybody here know anything about nuclear reactors
I wonder what the actual 'planetary' threat is with something like an underwater nuclear sub exploding
Sure sounds bad but I'm fairly ignorant of the implications

@GnomeSlice Water is REALLY good at absorbing and retaining radioactivity. The implication here is that a nuclear sub exploding underwater would spread huge amounts of radioactive particles all over the seas. In addition, the nuclear slag that would settle to the bottom of the seabed could cause environmental damage to the nearby ocean

11:15 AM
Does sound pretty serious

11:32 AM
@GnomeSlice Yeah, it is. Russian nuclear subs use HEU (Highly Enriched Uranium), which has a half-life (time before half of it has decayed) of somewhere between 700 million and 4.5 billion years, depending on how enriched it is
So essentially, a nuclear reactor exploding in the ocean would contaminate the sea with radioactive material that would take longer than the projected remaining lifespan of the Earth to feasibly decay

@Nzall the flip side of that is that the longer the half-life, the less radioactive it is

@ToxicFrog True, and it's a vast and deep ocean, so it's probably only homeopathic amounts of Uranium.

U235 is useful not because it's ~super radioactive~ but because it's capable of sustaining a chain reaction when you smack it with a neutron
And it sounds like the problems with the sub weren't even reactor-related, so even if it had gone down it's an open question whether the core would have been breached -- those things aren't as hard as RTGs but they're pretty durable.
Dumping a burning sub onto the seafloor isn't great, and dumping a melting nuclear reactor onto the seafloor is worse, but neither is even close to a "planetary catastrophe"
(and the ignorance and scaremongering around nuclear power and anything related to it, and the media's role in abetting that, pisses me off)

@ToxicFrog Based on predictions and simulations, I assume. AFAIK there hasn't yet been a dumping of a melting nuclear reactor onto the sea floor, and experimental verification would be a crazy idea

Not specifically, but something like half a dozen other nuclear subs have sunk over the years, some of them while on fire
(more if you count subs that sank in shallow water/were deliberately scuttled/were salvaged afterwards)

12:01 PM
Scheer vows to scrap clean fuel standard, calls Liberal plan a 'secret fuel tax' cbc.ca/news/politics/…

2 hours later…
2:34 PM
Ross Perot is dead at 89

Oh right, I forgot McDowell was retiring
@GnomeSlice The ruling does seem correct but for the usual dumb reason of Congress doing a terrible job at being useful
Which is unfortunate because I think the information would be good
Also Trump can't block people on Twitter which is a thing we're still litigating about apparently because 🤷‍♂️

@TimStone Why not just enforce Twitter to automate unblocking anyone he does block?
Solves that problem handily.

tbh they should just ban him
@GodEmperorDune Although I'm not entirely sure this was a function of the straw so much as it was a freak accident, but plastic straws are still fine and it's dumb we've spent so much energy against them instead of literally anything else
The Tom Steyer of environmentalism
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, though her platform is 100% correct. Hard to imagine any of the current situation without McConnell

3:26 PM
@TimStone I think we should have put more effort into making sure people recycle their trash rather than just leave it behind in the wilderness

@TimStone freak accident sure, but a throwaway plastic straw wouldn’t have been strong enough to do the same damage

@TimStone Yes, and they're hypocrites not to, but I'd settle for sneaky aggravations, like that one, and random errors and lost followers.

Yeah, but she could have been holding a knife or something instead for that matter. But there is something in recognizing that a metal straw is basically just an upsized syringe needle 🤔

Remains to be seen if this policy will be used to mass report/silence people criticizing religion rather than full on dehumanizing

2 hours later…
5:11 PM

5:28 PM
we have been informed that area freezer cases have armed guards now
or at least, 2 cops who stood in the freezer aisle for a photo
because, sure why not

1 hour later…
6:30 PM
@GodEmperorDune hopefully not
@TimStone is Twitter considered an official Channel now?
@GodEmperorDune wtf that's awful

@GnomeSlice Trump essentially uses it as one. He's announced policy and even decided policy via Twitter posts, so yeah, it's basically official.
Basically if he treats it like it is, the law should treat it the same, as I understand it.

6:54 PM
Interesting
I think blocking people in general is pretty dumb so I don't really care either way but that's very interesting

Yeah, I didn't look into the legal basis here, I'm just amazed that we're still dealing with that versus everything else
The weird thing too is that his account has so much interaction I'm not even sure why he blocked anyone in the first place
Surely he doesn't even see most of that

yeah he's got blue check notification settings
which I think means he still sees blue checks I guess?

I'm surprised he blocked anyone too. Probably harassers

@Wipqozn I never understood the rationale here, as blocking doesn't prevent you from reading the tweets. But that is simply one issue I really couldn't care less about

I do see a lot of "haha can't block me Donnie" comments from people who probably have multi-page block lists, which is amusing

7:06 PM
It's just odd that future history books will probably contain his demented tweets

I mean they're considered presidential records for the purposes of whatever law that is so
yeah it'll archived in the library of congress

How do retweets and pseudoretweets work with that I wonder? Can't wait to preserve "Thank you! RT: @magachud88 our president is the best" for future generations

I don't know
given that it isn't the @POTUS account either, good luck to jack
to be fair he's going to be in office forever so it's not like there'll need to be an end date on the archive, just a start date

2030, Nancy Pelosi says he's continuing to self-impeach, from behind bars

I wouldn't be that pessimistic.
Lol

7:14 PM
He is going to remain until he dies on the toilet in 2032 and we love it

@TimStone If neither Pelosi nor the voters get him, the Hamberders will at some point

Bruh we need to pull through in 2020 otherwise I am screwed

@MadScientist I honestly believe he is some sort of medical miracle, my cholesterol is through the damn roof and I don't eat nearly that much fast food
Biology is so weird

Lol

And if he stays president for three or more terms, maybe our species doesn't deserve the top spot anymore anyway

7:17 PM
Honestly the history books are gonna be so jacked in 150 years. Like we look back t people and say they're racist or sexist or helped the poor or we can categorize them. El presidento is a whole mother thing tho
And the only way we can really do anything meaningful to stop it is to try to get people to see beyond the whole dem/GOP thing, which if you've been on the internet lately you've seen is basically impossible

@MadScientist Two or more*

@Wipqozn at two terms I'm giving humans still a chance, at three or more we're just hopeless and should let the Dolphins try the civilization thing

@MadScientist dolphins are Jerks too though. I suggest elephants. They're nice.

Octopuses are pretty intelligent, and can probably use tools better

Also recommend octopuses

7:23 PM
@GodEmperorDune Wait, only religious groups?

@SaintWacko no this is in addition to the other protected categories

@GodEmperorDune Oh, okay

2 hours later…
The judge in the SDNY case has denied the DoJ's motion to withdraw its previous legal team, gives them the option to try it again but they need an actual reason

10:06 PM
@TimStone How do you make a link with custom text?

[text](link)
Inviting checks notes meme creators to the White House

thx
this is great, but we're all gonna die (new physics discovery and sea level rise)

user15026
@TimStone I mean on one hand okay sure the President does meet random people for reasons and like...this isn't entirely outside of the realm of reasons one could possibly meet the president I guess but mostly it just feels WEIRD AS HECK

user15026
@Nik3141 Try to give some context with your links, please

when fox news is worried about climate change you know you're screwed
ok

10:16 PM
what is the physics discovery there?

denser information flow with trions
they're like three particles 'bonded' together

oh, I couldn't even tell that was two links

and because they have quantum properties like spin you can encode more information more densely

In general, separate out your links more clearly

user15026
Oh, yes, also that, I didn't realize you had posted two incredibly disparate links there

10:20 PM
ok

As a general guideline, you'll always be fine putting separate links in separate messages

@Ash Yeaaah that's where I'm at too

11:17 PM
@TimStone better solution would be to make proper starws which aren't perceived to be one use and then sell them as an extra
who wouldn't want to pick one and keep it on them to have them a couple of $ each time, or keep getting drinks to get the entire collection
