> New York state lawmakers on Wednesday passed a bill to ban the use of "gay panic" or "trans panic" defenses in murder cases.

In such defenses, defendants justify their crimes by saying the victim's sexual orientation or gender identity caused an extreme emotional reaction. The new legislation aims to make it so that "a non-violent sexual advance or the discovery of a person's sexual orientation or gender identity does not constitute a 'reasonable explanation or excuse'" to commit a crime.
the fact that such a defense even exists and needs to be banned because people would actually use it is sickening enough. hope other places follow suit if people try the same shit

> Users would have to give the platform government-issued IDs, including drivers licences or passports "so people are who they say they are," according to Calibra's policy documents.
so yeh, Libra will be all about trust. so how many people Trust Facebook with their Driver's Licenses or Passport?

Oh yeah, I forgot that most people don't know about Juneteenth.

1:23 AM
@Yuuki i saw a tweet about someone making that a holiday
still no idea what it is or why, didn't bother reading the article behind it

2:29 AM
@Memor-X tl;dr Texas was one of the most remote states of the Confederacy and therefore the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't enforced there until the end of the Civil War.
It's largely a Texas holiday but down here, it's basically considered when slavery really ended.

3:18 AM
Iran is claiming it shot down a US drone, Pentagon not commenting yet

@TimStone is this a different drone to what the US said Iran shot down before that tanker incident?

6 hours later…
9:48 AM
@Memor-X They're essentially becoming a bank here, and will likely have to comply with all kinds of money-laundering and other regulations. I would expect even more involved methods of identity verification, just providing a copy of an ID isn't enough for a bank in Germany for example

10:19 AM
Trump's policies to reduce CO2 will actually increase CO2 emissions blogs.discovermagazine.com/imageo/2019/06/19/…
SURPRISE!
> The Trump administration has rolled back Obama-era climate change rules in an effort to save coal-fired electric power plants in the United States.

11:02 AM
@TimStone The difference is, generally you deciding whether or not you terminate your pregnancy earlier doesn't affect the health of those around you. You getting an abortion doesn't increase the risk of other people in your community dying.

11:59 AM
Oh neat we're just flying drones in iranian airspace now apparently

@Unionhawk We can't really know for sure yet where the drone was, both sides have very strong incentives to lie here

2 hours later…
2:28 PM
> Iran made a very big mistake!
This doesn't look good

2:40 PM
@MadScientist so i take it Iran did shoot down that drone that the White House has been saying no comment?

@MadScientist Wait, that's it?

@MBraedley yes. It almost certainly refers to the drone Iron shot down

3:37 PM
lmfao

@GnomeSlice I'll believe it when I see hear it.
Also, probably won't help those with hearing damage induced tinnitus, like me.

@MBraedley probably what mine is as well...

Yay, good on The Guardian for crediting Pratchett

@TimStone lol

> Asked if US will strike Iran, Trump says ‘you’ll soon find out’

killing a journalist in an embassy: whom among us
shooting down an unarmed drone: WAR GODDAMMIT

@GodEmperorDune Wasn't the drone in Iranian airspace as well?

4:20 PM
@MadScientist Really amazing that even Trump himself belies the fact that he'll do whatever the last person says to him at the point he feels like a decision should be made on any given topic

@Yuuki probably, and we've shot down iranian passenger jets in teh past so

Because he always says we'll find out later, since he doesn't have an answer
So, probably still yes, but 🤷‍♂️

@TimStone so this he believes the science on

@TimStone Climate change is also scientifically documented so 🤷‍♀️ as far as that goes with Trump.

Apropos of nothing (even if they've surely upgraded since then)
Pentagon has released a map, to which my first question is uhhh but where was the drone when the missile was launched?
Who cares where it was when the missile impacted the drone

Really unfortunate Dan Bongos got over to Fox & Friends
I love how Grover Cleveland's solution to not having a wife for First Lady was to just call up his sister, who was gay, until Grover married his significantly younger ward
@MadScientist lmao now he's pulling the it was probably an accident card

> Protocol for unmarried or widowed presidents called for a female relative to fill the role of first lady.
TIL

Right? Seems like they could have just shrugged it off, but

I didn't realise First Lady was an official US position

> Although the first lady's role has never been codified or officially defined, she figures prominently in the political and social life of the nation.
But also:
The Office of the First Lady of the United States is the staff accountable to the First Lady of the United States. The office and its responsibilities, while not mandated, have grown as the role of the First Lady has grown and formalized through the history of the United States. The Office of the First Lady is an entity of the White House Office, part of the Executive Office of the President. It is located in the East Wing. The First Lady has her own staff that includes a Chief of Staff, White House Social Secretary, Press Secretary, White House Chief Floral Designer, and White House Executive...

4:38 PM
So there are official protocols for a nonofficial position?

Pretty much.

Weird country you've got there
Although tbf our Prime Minister is sort of an unofficial position

5:50 PM
Wait, what?
Instead of resurrecting a Montreal MLB team, the Tampa Bay Rays are just going to switch locations midseason?
…Excuse me?
But someone's already testified that they saw Eddie Gallagher stab the kid in the neck
So now we're supposed to believe that he stabbed him in the neck but then this other guy strangled him so actually who can say who's responsible for the war crime, I guess?
Senate blocks Saudi arm sales, but not by a veto-proof majority

@TimStone At least they're planning on not playing in the Big O, which honestly just needs to be torn down.

6:09 PM
I'm sorry a what now?
> The company sells Christian-themed magic supplies and teaching aids to customers around the world who use magic shows as a form of evangelism
squints at the screen I'm still not following

user15026
@TimStone okay, yeah, that was my assumption

user15026
I've seen those sorts of shows.

I'm trying to understand how it's Christian-themed but doesn't cross into blasphemous territory

user15026
Just...assume Christians will use anything they can think they can possibly tie to the Jesus story in any way possible to spread their message.

user15026
Slight of hand tricks aren't blasphemy?

6:11 PM
I mean I assume it's not like, recreating the miracles of Christ right? >_>

Would a trick that turns water into "wine" count as blasphemous?

user15026
Probably not, it's probably like bog standard kids birthday magic tricks

It just made me think of that King of the Hill episode:
@TimStone Oh, okay, the medic who has immunity
🙄
@Ash Yeah, I guess there's a lot of stuff you could just brand in a Christian way, like party supplies basically, that makes sense
Seems a bit unnecessary for my tastes but I'm also not running an unregistered business out of my basement

@TimStone ... but he still stabbed the kid, right?

user15026
@TimStone Some flavours of Christianity just really go in for the "MAKE EVERYTHING JESUS" end of thing.

6:19 PM
Like if I shot someone but the paramedic then, I dunno, tripped on the IV cord, I'm pretty sure I'm still culpable for murder.

@Yuuki Yeah but now the guy who can't be prosecuted says he actually killed him, the knife to the throat would have totally be recoverable
Alas what can we do but drop the whole issue, seems to be the plan
@Ash Yeah, whew

7:22 PM
Got a good ol' fashioned legislator roundup happening in Oregon
Roy Moore's response to what he'll do differently running this time is uhhhhhhhhhh
ಠ_ಠ

1 hour later…

1 hour later…
10:22 PM
I've had a VA Choice card since 2015

Yeah, I hope people are following up on that instead of just…believing him, because the "You go out now, you get a doctor, you fix yourself up, the doctor sends us the bill, we pay for it" part is not how it works? :/
Like you still have to get preapproval right? Or they're like 🤷‍♂️
