No, no, we blame The Poors for that, of course. Certainly not teh banks and their overly cozy arrangements with empowering the rich
Also I see Lynne Patton is busy being Lynne Patton
Really should have let her stay stuck in that elevator tbh

Sounds like a valid green vote to me

1:53 AM
Hmm I'm beginning to suspect this Duncan Hunter guy might not be so great 🤔🤔

@TimStone should've stuck with using campaign cash on steam lootboxes or w/e

@TimStone I love that they accepted it as a vote like how wild is that

6:09 AM
@TimStone that doesn't really make any sense from a business point of view, so I'm very curious what could be behind this

The Globe and Mail: Ontario Premier Doug Ford to reverse retroactive cuts to municipalities.
https://www-theglobeandmail-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.theglobeandmail.com/amp/canada/article-ontario-premier-doug-ford-to-reverse-retroactive-cuts-to/
> Ontario Premier Doug Ford is announcing Monday that he will cancel a series of retroactive funding cuts that hit municipalities this year, including reductions for public health and childcare.
> The announcement presumably leaves the plans for steep cuts to a range of provincial funding for cities in place for future years, however.

3:35 PM
@MadScientist tfw you make more off the commissions and don't really care about the loan getting paid back
@Wipqozn what a jerk
why do retroactive budget cuts at all other than to be a jerk?

soo ... ummm.... apparently the head of the largest German conservative party just basically commited political suicide.
not "just now", but a few hours ago.
She called for "Regulation of political endorsements from youtubers during election periods"
A subsequent tweet of hers where she could have put things into a perspective that wasn't outright violation of the constitution but doubled down is at 3.8k answers and 149 retweets right now

@Vogel612 I feel like she does have a point though from what you're saying. The internet is a wild west of political advertising and the far right players on the field are much more skilled at exploiting that

that doesn't make her call for that any more constitutionally acceptable

I feel like political advertising should have a fixed budget that's the same for all parties

especially considering that it was made in relation to a Video by YouTuber "rezo"
@Nzall this is not about political advertising

Though that's what they did in the UK and you can see how that turned out since it was completely violated

8:58 PM
there are strict rules around that in Germany, heavily regulating what can and can not be put "on the air"
The problem is that she's proposing a regulation of free speech on youtubers that has absolutely no equivalent anywhere in existing German law
She basically attempts to construe YouTubers to have the same status as publicly financed and by law mandated to be neutral television
Even when you try to push youtubers to the same status as newspapers (which was her justification), it doesn't shake out under current legislation or the constitution

@Vogel612 That's actually a good thing IMHO. Youtube right now needs regulation related to what can happen on there, because Google itself sucks at that sort of thing

Basically she turned a PR debacle around a yt-video that got 11 Mio Views in a week into a political suicide
@Nzall this is not about regulating youtube, ....

@Vogel612 Youtubers should not get free reign to spread political propaganda.

so you're saying an hour long video citing around 140 sources that were subsequently checked by multiple "old media" outlets and found generally correct is "propaganda"?
Because that's what happened
someone grabbed ~140 different sources for different talking points and ranted for an hour
these 140 sources range from outlets of the state over reutters and similar agencies to scientific studies and the IPCC

I'm too tired to continue about this right now

9:05 PM
That aside, even granting you the idea that it was political propaganda (which it isn't), her timing is the worst possible

@Vogel612 It was a seriously dumb statement, but not necessarily as nefarious as the worst-case reading.

meh. Even if we're not going for the worst-case reading, anybody sensible she'd have run this by would've told her what a blunder this would be
I just can't get over how bad this makes her and the CDU look

They fucked up in some pretty major ways with their response to the video, it's quite incredible. I don't think it would have gotten much mainstream attention without their botched response

Probably, yea. Though IIRC it got a bit of coverage in the news before the real bad mistakes
when it took off they just dug their own hole deeper

@Vogel612 Right now it's a dumb statement they can walk back and the whole thing will be forgotten very soon. That's very far away from the case where she's serious and tried to actually push that thought seriously, which I really can't imagine happening

9:13 PM
The internet does not forget and it does not forgive

the internet has just as short an attention span as everyone else, probably even shorter

And even if they walk it back, it will hurt her credibility and status both within the party and with the general populace

But in general I suspect that AKK is finished, too much went wrong so far and she's in a rather weak position now

@MadScientist the copyright reform has been around for much longer in the internet than in the mainstream media

@Vogel612 she already walked it back

9:15 PM
you mean this tweet?
because that's not what I'd call "walking back"

@Vogel612 I only saw indirect reports so far about it, that's indeed quite far from walking backwards fast enough

If that's what's sold as walking back, then we're in for another ride

I think I might have been exposed too much to Trump to judge the response this might get in Germany. I'm far more cynical about what scandals politicians can survive now

I'm somewhat conflicted. If she plays her cards right, she might survive this. But if she doesn't I'm pretty sure we'll have large demonstrations

2 hours later…
10:59 PM
I do wonder like, what the intent there was because like
Political YouTube stuff is mostly right wing
But I suspect much of that content is already banned in Germany
