BREAKING: Stop & Shop supermarket workers, company officials say they've reached a tentative contract agreement, ending a strike. http://apne.ws/saxQ6DY

@TimStone they've also found a pipe bomb at the airport. been disarmed but could have been worse

12:30 AM
Workers will return Monday and the vote to confirm the agreement will take place soon after

@Wipqozn I dunno, I think console players might be involved as well

@GodEmperorDune I mean, that just goes without saying.

@GodEmperorDune duncan hunter is an American politician.

1 hour later…
2:35 AM
Comedian who plays president on TV wins Ukraine’s presidential election http://hill.cm/kvi6CNg

11 hours later…
1:58 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Well, it literally used to be a monarchy (and technically still is).

@MBraedley tbh including the Crown seems a bit weird anyways, since they're essentially a government entity? It be like saying how much land is government owned in Canada.
And corporations owning more land also makes sense, since they need more of it (farms, office buildings, warehouses, factories, et cetera)

2:38 PM
@Memor-X that is... insanity
@Unionhawk not in reality, no. Well, maybe in the short term, but obviously decades down the road there will be no consumers because Earth will no longer support, killings us all off.

@TheMattbat999 yeh and i don't think it wont be at all surprising if a Kardashian or Ninja becomes President of the US next after Trump

> ExxonMobil sets annual profit record: $40.6B - ABC News
at best, the invisible hand of the market will decide the optimal amount of climate destruction for the cost-benefit chart.
and that optimal amount is greater than 0

@Memor-X oh god, kim Kardashian will be the next president

@Wipqozn she's already trying for the Bar Exam
though what Leonard French called the Baby Bar Exam

2:53 PM
The Kardashians are a group of people who always bothered me so much. It's the complete worship of the rich and it makes me sick.
They're famous because they're rich
Which in turn makes them more rich

I'm still trying to puzzle out exactly how the Kardashians became famous. IIRC, it had something to do with the OJ Simpson trial, but that was still years (I think at least a decade) before they were really mainstream famous.

@Yuuki i remember there was a sex tape with Kim in it
@Wipqozn and on TV making drama

@Wipqozn Ugh, right?

which is why i see one of them being president since now it seems to get into politics you just need to be famous on TV
next generation it would be a youtuber/streamer

@Memor-X Oh god, don't say things like that

3:48 PM
@Yuuki Kim Kardashian’s Dad was sorta famous for being a lawyer in the OJ trial, but it was the sex tape and reality show that made her famous, then she marketed it with a ton of product lines VERY WELL

1 hour later…
4:51 PM
@Memor-X it wouldn't suprise me in the least. Also, I am running for President when i get old enough.

5:12 PM
MATBAT FOR PRESIDENT 2040!!!!
Who wants to be my Vice President?

NEW: Two employee activists at Google say they've been retaliated against for helping to organize a walkout among thousands of Google employees in November, and are planning a “town hall” meeting on Friday for others to discuss the alleged retaliation. https://wired.trib.al/vZAgqPz

5:29 PM
Well i guess no one wants to run with me.
Oh well

1 hour later…
6:34 PM
Sen. Elizabeth Warren proposes canceling approximately $640 billion in outstanding student loan debt https://politi.co/2XyO6iG

6:48 PM
@GodEmperorDune umm... that is alot of debt to cancel.

@TheMattbat999 ...which could provide a trillion dollars in economic impact.

@MBraedley that is true. I hope that didn't come across as we should not do it. It would help alot of people out.
I just meant that is a lot
(I am assuming the logic is "The less debt people have, the more they will spend")

@TheMattbat999 In general for every extra dollar a consumer has to spend results in between $1.20 and $1.50 of economic impact, although this is also very hard to measure.

@MBraedley cool.
I know alot of teachers of mine who would be happy to get rid of their student loan debt

@GodEmperorDune Yes please

6:57 PM
This is mostly just my opinion, but student loan debt is only good debt until you get your first job after graduation, and then quickly and suddenly turns into bad debt.

Because the second they see you have an income, they want it all.
But only get most.

It's not even that. It's mostly the lack of ongoing utility gained from the thing purchased (an education); you have a job, which you got partially because of your degree, but your degree doesn't factor in that much for your second job. Although what makes debt good or bad isn't universal, and this reasoning might not apply to other kinds of debt.

Hmm...
Good point

Like a mortgage is generally good debt, a car loan is generally okay debt, and credit card debt is generally bad debt. An overriding piece is the affordability of the debt too.

How is debt "good", exactly?

7:11 PM
Well, for a mortgage, a) you generally can't afford the entire purchase price, and so have to finance it over a period of time, and b) the asset (the house or condo) usually appreciates over time. That debt allows the housing market to function.

Ok, i see.

"Nobody disobeys my orders": President Trump contends that none of his underlings routinely defy his commands, despite numerous examples contained in Robert Mueller's report showing aides ignoring or refusing his dictates https://cnn.it/2ZrxNWL

11/ The ACTUAL @TurboTax “free file” version is on a different site altogether. Our google search took us to promises of FREE GUARANTEED, but we were actually using a version of @TeamTurboTax that charges for services that the ACTUAL Free File compliant version offers for free
lmao
very cool

So glad the tax preparer lobby hasn't infected Canada

@Unionhawk so glad we made the "IRS can't ever do free tax prep" deal with industry

7:26 PM
@MBraedley Well, until banks decide they can give second mortgages to people who can't afford one

@Nzall Yes, if you can't afford the debt, then it's automatically bad debt.
Doesn't matter what type of debt it is when you can't afford the payments.

@GodEmperorDune lol come on, I think he's even used an example of someone not doing what he said to say to blame them
@Unionhawk This reminds me of the H&R Block commercial that says that they'll tell you what the cost is up front which like, technically true? In the sense it's before you pay? But it also has a lot of that "Ah, but, what if we made you get this more expensive version?"

@TimStone you don't understand, the part about his minions disobeying him was THE MOST VICIOUS LIE of the mueller report

I think when I was trying to get an estimate for how much I'd owe so I could pay and then file for an extension and go to my actual tax person it made me upgrade like three times
President Trump speaks at White House Easter Egg Roll: "We are completely rebuilding our military. It was very depleted as you know. A lot of the military folks can tell you." https://t.co/sGYOtJaiYo
lol I thought this was from last year or something but no we're doing this again
Making extremely off topic comments highlighted by the giant Easter Bunny standing to the side

7:44 PM
@TimStone I mean to be fair he did just kick out a bunch of trans people
So the probably do news more bodies!

@TimStone this is why I recommend creditkarma tax to everyone because it's actually free and not "only if you only have a W-2 free"
They make their money on credit card ads

"Self-driving cars: What if they were just like us?"

Wat
There we go. On one hand bleh, but on the other hand things are pretty tense over there

8:21 PM
@HalfEmpty oh my... You aren't aware obviously, but we don't do Breitbart in here. Like, AT ALL

(he is aware)

Breitbart is nothing but right-wing propaganda these days, so we don't want anything about it here

OK, I'm going to say he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt on that anymore. He's basically the only person who shares Breitbart articles here.

Ah, okay, I thought it was his first time

(it's 10 minutes old at this point, he doesn't have a delete button anymore)

8:27 PM
I was trying to remember what the time limit on that was

2m, it's not a lot of time

@Nzall whatever man you know how much left wing propaganda gets posted in here lol
I was gonna post the original article but it wasn't in english
Somebody else can find a more suitable mirror perhaps? I think it's worth sharing
I'm at work
Everything is propaganda now

@HalfEmpty This might come as a shock to you, but a chat room with predominantly left-leaning users does tend to post a lot of left-leaning messages

I skimmed it, it seemed okay

I'm honestly baffled right now, like, how do you think posting literally exactly the same thing that has been deleted by a moderator is going to go, do you think

8:40 PM
@Nzall not a shock at all, I think we are all liberals in here tbh
@Unionhawk maybe somebody can find a suitable mirror I said

@HalfEmpty We're not going to find a mirror, because this is a non-event. This is pretty much just a Swedish student getting told she can't talk about something controversial which might offend her classmates, and an extremist propaganda network reporting on this because the controversial topic is actually something they love talking about

Another real moment brought to you by a common purveyor of them.

This isn't something you're going to find reported outside of right-wing propaganda networks as a left-wing attack on both Israel and freedom of speech

Ah, and there's the re-pin.

Yeah, I did that like 20 minutes ago

@Nzall fair enough I guess

> All the Democrats need to do is re-brand impeachment. Market it as a celebration of Trump’s unique style of presidenting. Call it “IMPORTANTMENT,” an investigation into the myriad important decisions Trump made as a candidate and as president.
> Rather than trying to determine whether he’s guilty of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” tell him Congress is hoping to gauge whether he, unlike other, lesser presidents, has achieved “the HIGHEST CRIMES and MAXdemeanors.”

Maybe I just didn't understand the issue as well as I thought I did

@BradC Okay but! What if we just call it peaches

@Nzall FWIW I think it's important to avoid turning into an echo chamber

8:49 PM
@TimStone perfect

@HalfEmpty There are ways of doing that without linking to an explicitly banned site

Shrug. Like I said I couldn't find another mirror

That's not a valid reason. If you can't find an article on a site that isn't Breitbart, don't post the article at all.

Meh
Sorry I guess

> In Trump’s lawsuit, his attorneys cited a Supreme Court decision called Kilbourn v. Thompson…a case from 1880. And it was overruled by a decision in 1927, Tiefer said.
Excellent legal work
Musk on where he came up with some of the figures he's presenting to show that Tesla cars can make money for their owners by being used as robotaxis: "We just randomly threw some numbers on there."
Excellent business work

8:58 PM
It's the kind of work I expect from someone who works at the business office.

@HalfEmpty I'm deleting the link again.

@TimStone haha what
Whatever man I don't care about the issue enough to post it again go ahead
My reign of cyber terror has come to an end
I have like a filter set up for censorship in the news I guess brietbart just posts about it the most
Which is not surprising

> Education lecturer Christer Mattsson slammed the school for pressuring the teen to keep quiet about the subject saying, “You have to say what you think and think about what you want in school. As long as it does not conflict with the law and as long as the intention is not to offend anyone.”

“The risk is obvious that the students do not learn how to handle conflicts, but rather learn how to silence beliefs that are not comfortable,” Mattsson added.
Hmm. Formatting

9:11 PM
@TimStone To be honest, that usually works, because people don't usually source them.

That's pretty much the crux of what I was getting at

@Frank Yeah but I'm pretty sure this was an earnings call? So seems like a questionable tactic in context

I think Elon Musk does a lot of questionable things

Oh, I guess this is technically the "Tesla Autonomy Investor Day" presentation, ahead of the earnings call on Wednesday

@HalfEmpty "the intention is not to offend anyone" is not good enough anymore. There's a contingent of people posting extremely hateful stuff (including president trump) then going "oh no i was only JOKING" as if that magically undoes the harm caused

9:15 PM
@TimStone Yeah, that's lawsuit worthy.

I thought he was removed from Tesla?
@GodEmperorDune right, but I don't think this student was doing that

so effectively the "assume good faith" policy in many places was abused to where it's no longer the policy to "assume good faith" because it just gives cover to harm

Hate speech and controversial are different
Imo
@GodEmperorDune also. Eh. Without getting into it too much, I think the president posts a lot of ignorant things but idk about hateful
Feels like the goal posts for "hate" have moved a lot in the last decade or so
Which I guess is probably a product of technology and increased connectivity

At some point you can't just plausibly plead ignorance anymore. And being President of the United States is well past that point.

@HalfEmpty You're joking, right?
"shithole countries", everything he says about immigrants
You don't consider that hateful?

9:20 PM
Even if he is genuinely ignorant of some of those things, he doesn't have a reasonable excuse for not learning. It's just a plausible deniability thing so that people can pretend it's not intentional.

@SaintWacko This person has repeatedly made this claim for the past 2.5 years
This conversation has been had and the Breitbart rule was for this person
It's just willful blindness

In general the "ignorant not hateful" excuse only works once. After you do it and people tell you it's wrong, you're not ignorant anymore.

@murgatroid99 haha. I suppose that's true lol
I think he's hilarious
@SaintWacko did he post shithole countries on Twitter?

@HalfEmpty Yeah we know

That's what we're talking about, right?
I find it funny and a bit messed up that he gets away with saying most of what he does
But I mean, he's the first Twitter president
Which is.. interesting
I don't really like how the internet has changed human interactions, especially globally tbh

9:26 PM
#breaking The US believes it has identified a key terrorist operative in the attacks here in Sri Lanka and has initially concluded that person has connections to international terrorism organizations including ISIS according to two US officials speaking to @barbarastarrcnn

@murgatroid99 Agreed
So note this recent change in the pin @HalfEmpty:
Jun 14 '18 at 15:07, by Wipqozn
Breitbart links are not allowed in this room due to it being considered a hate site whose sole purpose is to promote bigotry. Repeat offenders may face suspension.
the fact it was done via a URL shortener also makes me strongly suspect you were trying to hide it was Breitbart link

I am almost always on mobile I can't see pins. But thanks
@Wipqozn actually it did that on its own, or maybe Samsung internet did it
But thank you for assuming malintent

dude just count yourself lucky for not getting suspended for re-posting something that was previously deleted by a mod lol

You think I can figure out how to use a url shortener on mobile? Lol
@Unionhawk cyber terror!

9:31 PM
Clickbait title, but a half-decent article:
Nearly every page of the #MuellerReport contains fresh insights, even to those who have closely followed the ins and outs of this complex, multifaceted investigation. Here are some key tidbits you may have missed: https://wired.trib.al/hBq7Usc

@Unionhawk Seriously though.

Wish you guys would stop treating me like some kind of villain to be controlled or avoided but whatever

@Unionhawk Would star if.

@HalfEmpty The whole reason that pin is there is because of you posting Breitbart links...

@Unionhawk just wanted it available for someone who was offended to find a mirror
@SaintWacko shrug. I'm on mobile
I'm usually at work

9:34 PM
.@realDonaldTrump says Congress can't investigate him, citing a Supreme Court decision from 1880. Problem: that decision was overruled in 1927. https://twitter.com/mateagold/status/1120425021325946880

@Wipqozn considered by whom? They sometimes have some aggressive articles but they seem otherwise pretty standard reporting to me

> Headline: Trump says it's all right to own slaves, citing an 1857 Supreme Court decision.

And they post about things you don't see on a lot of other networks
@Yuuki lol? Did he actually say that 😂

No, just riffing off the "cites overruled Supreme Court decision" thing that actually happened.
Incidentally, the 1857 Supreme Court case that allowed slavery was the Dred Scott Decision.
It's been unquestionably considered the worst Supreme Court decision ever.

@Nzall FYI I've been around a lot longer than you
@Yuuki no kidding

9:48 PM
@HalfEmpty sometimes people are confused by the username changes

@GodEmperorDune hence the fyi
@Yuuki at the time I bet it wasn't seen that way. That's crazy I never knew it was actually put into law that it was allowed I thought they're just wasnt a law against it
There
I swear this phone changes those every time

@HalfEmpty you... didn't know the law explicitly allowed slavery??

@BradC To be fair, he's not American, and Canadian education on slavery in the US mostly touches on the underground railroad. We don't get into the civil war or anything like that.

@BradC I'm Canadian
I just assumed there was no law against it for a long time
That's crazy!

@Wipqozn I recall a bit about the civil war.

10:00 PM
tl;dr the Dred Scott Decision didn't explicitly allow slavery, it said that African-Americans were not included in the definition of American citizenship.
Therefore all the rights that the Bill of Rights endowed to an American citizen did not apply to African-Americans.

@Frank yeah probably varies on province, but NS at least doesn't go into it in depth.

@Wipqozn Don't get me wrong; they didn't teach much.

We got a bit of it but I don't recall that particular piece of information

Just that the North and the South was a thing.
And that we torched the White House.

Technically speaking, Dred Scott v. Sandford was never overruled by the Supreme Court in a later decision.

10:02 PM
@Yuuki ahhh okay. That sounds familiar
The

Decent summary here: Constitutional Topic: Slavery

It was legislatively overruled by the 13th and 14th Amendments.

Y were sub human

> Slavery is seen in the Constitution in a few key places. The first is in the Enumeration Clause, where representatives are apportioned. Each state is given a number of representatives based on its population - in that population, slaves, called "other persons," are counted as three-fifths of a whole person. This compromise was hard-fought, with Northerners wishing that slaves, legally property, be uncounted, much as mules and horses are uncounted.
> Southerners, however, well aware of the high proportion of slaves to the total population in their states, wanted them counted as whole persons despite their legal status. The three-fifths number was a ratio used by the Congress in contemporary legislation and was agreed upon with little debate.

Wtf

10:06 PM
Yeah, the Three-Fifths Compromise is yet another really ugly part of American history.

That's crazy. Humanity used to be pretty messed up!

I mean, we still are but we used to be too.

FTFY: Humanity used to be is pretty messed up!

We are a lot more civilized now.. but I bet you slave owners thought they were civilized too so 🤷‍♂️
Your average human is pretty decent now I think

Oh hey, let's not forget about my favorite part of overlooked American history: The Chinese Exclusion Act!

10:11 PM
What's that

@HalfEmpty Considering a significant portion of TODAY'S US population doesn't have much problem with putting refugees into camps along the southern border, no, I don't think human nature has changed all that much

What it says on the label: it banned immigration of Chinese individuals.

gotta go, see y'all

And also curtailed the rights of Chinese immigrants already living in the US.

@BradC I think you average person is pretty decent

10:13 PM
> The Act also affected the Chinese who had already settled in the United States. Any Chinese who left the United States had to obtain certifications for reentry, and the Act made Chinese immigrants permanent aliens by excluding them from U.S. citizenship.

@Yuuki yikes
Even if they already had citizenship?

Given that many Chinese immigrants were young males looking for employment opportunities, the Chinese Exclusion Act effectively split families.
@HalfEmpty The earlier Naturalization Act of 1790 prevented non-white immigrants from becoming citizens.
In the aftermath of the passing of the Chinese Exclusion Act, there was a lot of anti-Chinese violence.
The Rock Springs massacre, also known as the Rock Springs Riot, occurred on September 2, 1885, in the present-day United States city of Rock Springs in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. The riot, and resulting massacre of immigrant Chinese miners by white immigrant miners, was the result of racial prejudice toward the Chinese miners, who were perceived to be taking jobs from the white miners. The Union Pacific Coal Department found it economically beneficial to give preference in hiring to Chinese miners, who were willing to work for lower wages than their white counterparts, angering the white miners...
The Hells Canyon massacre (also known as the Snake River massacre) was a massacre where thirty-four Chinese goldminers were ambushed and murdered in May 1887. In 2005, the area was renamed Chinese Massacre Cove, and a memorial was placed there in 2012 in three languages, Chinese, English, and Nez Perce. == Massacre == Two groups of Chinese miners, led by Chea Po and Lee She, departed Lewiston in October 1886 and headed upriver along the Snake into Oregon's Hells Canyon to search for gold. Chea's group stopped on the Oregon side of the Snake, near Robinson Gulch and the cove where Deep Creek empties...

For all you folks who love to joke about "fake news" while your colleagues are literally feeding shit to Breitbart https://www.buzzfeed.com/josephbernstein/heres-how-breitbart-and-milo-smuggled-white-nationalism
Which is to say considered by Breitbart itself
and that's the last we'll discuss of breitbart. I just wanted to respond to that once I was back on my computer. I'd encourage you to read it.

10:29 PM
Thanks. Anyway like I said I remembered the rule but I couldn't find another mirror
Sorry I guess
I just don't seem to understand the problem I guess
I am interested in articles about censorship lately, government or otherwise and right wing news outlets seem to write about that more

@HalfEmpty If you don't find another mirror, then don't share it.

I'm still a moderate lib
@Wipqozn weak
@Wipqozn lol BuzzFeed?

> Nicknamed the "red flag bill," it allows a family member, police officer, or anyone else close to a gun owner to petition a judge to temporarily seize their firearms if they are deemed a risk to themselves or others.

@Wipqozn pretty sure that's illegal

@HalfEmpty They write about it more because they want to give a false impression that there's some epidemic of marxist teachers censoring students or whatever the fuck

10:32 PM
@Wipqozn So the sheriff, is likely to quickly not be a sheriff.

@Unionhawk as opposed to an epidemic of... Whatever it is that you think there's an epidemic of? Meh
I don't know why the right media seems more interested in censorship but I get more of them in my feed now

they want to make it seem like more of a thing than it actually is

Would still say it's like 75% left wing news which is actually fine with me
@Unionhawk I guess but there do seem to be squabbles and incidents all the time
I don't really care what the agenda of the source is as long as the stories are real

It's not about it not being true, it's about emphasis

?
Anyway all I'm saying is that a bit more right wing media shows up for me than probably for you guys because I am really interested in censorship
And they seem to report on it more
(particularly breitbart although some of them are a bit of a stretch)

10:37 PM
I'm pretty sure roughly 40-45% of news posts in here are @TimStone posting The Hill articles.

Is a good thing I'm able to read and decide things for myself!
@Yuuki lol
I don't care who is saying something, I care about what is being said
If you guys think I only follow far right news sources that's.. wrong too lol

> [So they’re getting a very specific narrative, which, while again, we always talk about how propaganda is not about lies, it’s about emphasis. We are emphasizing these totally obscure and exceedingly rare examples as something indicative of a broader moral panic.

Nima: Well, right, and then it’s outsized reporting from mainstream outlets makes it seem so far more ubiquitous than it actually is](https://medium.com/@CitationsPodcst/episode-32-attack-of-the-pc-college-kids-1e1cfd758472)

@Unionhawk ah that's what you meant by emphasis. Okay
I wasn't sure

@HalfEmpty Shrug, I'm not going to rehash this Breitbart argument.

@Unionhawk to be fair I see the left wing media doing this too
Like the Jussie Smollet thing lol

10:41 PM
@HalfEmpty Meh.

Everyone does it now
Everything's propaganda
It's really annoying actually
Breitbart doesn't even try to hide it but everyone does it
Except snopes? Sorta
@Yuuki meh?
Jussie Smollett was an AHA for left wing news and now an AHA for right wing news
It's dumb
Actually I'm surprised people are even still talking about that. Saw another one come up today

yeah me too and yet here we are

I guess my larger point is that I just don't really trust the intentions of any news source anymore
So I don't bother trying to follow their politics
@Wipqozn that seems like a good law. Is it the first of its kind? I've never heard of that before
I'm pretty anti gun in general
What if they think someone else with access to the gun is a danger?
Like a teenager in the house, for example. Not the owner of the weapon but still close to it
Broetbart didn't provide any of the speech so you guys are right all the context wasn't there
I saw a really stupid article from them this morning about how some "homeowner" shot and killed an intruder without mentioning anything about what actually happened which is frankly pretty awful

11:07 PM
@GodEmperorDune key not is "his underlings". he's probably disowned everyone who disobeys or takes notes
@TimStone sorta defeats the purpose then
or makes us like this
@TimStone oh you have verifiable evidence on the contrary? get the fuck out of here with your "facts", we have "alternative facts"!
@Wipqozn and this is why the US has a gun problem

Tomorrow the Supreme Court is hearing a rare FOIA case—it pits a South Dakota newspaper, the Argus Leader, against big business interests that want to block its FOIA request. Read my analysis: https://cpj.org/blog/2019/04/supreme-court-fmi-argus-leader-foia-usa.php
an article about govt and business interests doing censorship @HalfEmpty

11:45 PM
@GodEmperorDune hey, thanks. I'll check that out in a bit
> As it stands, the FOIA statute does not provide an exact definition of "confidential." Most courts defer to a 1974 Eighth Circuit ruling, National Parks & Conservation Ass'n v. Morton.

@Memor-X Pretty much, yeah. There's just too many people, especially those with power cough NRA cough, that are extremely opposed to any sort of stricter gun control laws. Doesn't matter how many innocent people die because of it.

Well maybe they should start with that 🤦‍♂️
@Wipqozn is the sherrif getting removed?
Like.. he has to do it doesn't he?

I wonder if the NRA just, like, never existed if stricter gun controls would've passed by now. They've played such a large role in preventing it.

Plus why would anyone think that's a bad idea
@Wipqozn are they really still that influential?
Is it all just old people or what
I don't know much about the NRA, admittedly
It's not a government organization, right?

@HalfEmpty Yes
The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) is a U.S. nonprofit organization that advocates for gun rights. Founded in 1871, the group has informed its members about firearm-related legislation since 1934, and it has directly lobbied for and against firearms legislation since 1975.Founded to advance rifle marksmanship, the modern NRA continues to teach firearm safety and competency. The organization also publishes several magazines and sponsors competitive marksmanship events. According to the NRA, it has nearly 5 million members as of December 2018, although that figure has not been in...
> In 2014 the NRA lobbied for a bill in Pennsylvania which grants it and other advocacy groups legal standing to sue municipalities to overturn local firearm regulations passed in violation of a state law preempting such regulations, and which also allows the court to force cities to pay their legal fees. As soon as it became law, the NRA sued three cities: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Lancaster.

I forget when but around the 1970s or something like that they shifted from a sportsman's org to the major right wing lobbying powerhouse it is today

@Unionhawk '76 looks like

@Wipqozn WTF is this

> The Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA), the lobbying branch of the NRA, was established in 1975. According to political scientists John M. Bruce and Clyde Wilcox, the NRA shifted its focus in the late 1970s to incorporate political advocacy, and started seeing its members as political resources rather than just as recipients of goods and services.
> Despite the impact on the volatility of membership, the politicization of the NRA has been consistent and its PAC, the Political Victory Fund established in 1976, ranked as "one of the biggest spenders in congressional elections" as of 1998.
@HalfEmpty The NRA being the NRA

No wonder guns are so important in America that organization is huge

@HalfEmpty i mean guns are also baked into the founding documentation

11:53 PM
Why did they even get that bill passed??

It's unfortunate, a national organization that specifically does marksmanship and safety and whatnot would be/was valuable

Do they still at least do those things

But that's very much an "also they do this other thing" side project

@HalfEmpty well the importance of guns in America really dates back to how they left Britian, aka not peacefully. Bear to arms was put into the constitution as a defense against being dragged back into Britian (and also as a check against if the US gov't tried to go all King of England on them, I think?).

:/
@Wipqozn yeah. That is so outdated now though. The us military has drones

11:56 PM
@HalfEmpty Yes, but it's still in the Constitution and a large portion of the country has guns. So not exactly easy to undo that.
buuut that's not really the problem anymore anyways

Sounds like this group is preventing that anyway

There's plenty of both gun and non-gun owning americans who want better laws around gun control, it's just that there's still many powerful organizations that want none of that at all. Sadly, that includes the GOP.

I've heard of the NRA but I never knew they had so much power

"gun and non-gun owning americans" makes no sense upon a reread, but hopefully it makes sense enough

Haha

Anyways, I gotta go to the gym. But the tl;dr is NRA is essentially one of the worst organizations on the planet.

(I do wonder how many of that 5m is dues paying vs paid for life though lol)

like, from a moral standpoint that is
