BREAKING: Using the 2nd veto of his presidency, President Trump rejects a bill passed by the US Congress that aimed to end America's support and involvement in the Yemen war that has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. http://NBCNews.com

@GodEmperorDune Remember how he wasn't CEO for a while and somehow that was so bad he came back? I had to refresh myself on the timeline and trying to follow how the leadership moved around made my head hurt

@TimStone wow this is some soap opera level stuff

They hired Anthony Noto from Goldman Sachs for some reason, made him CFO, when Costolo resigned he was rumoured to be in the running for CEO, but ultimately became COO after Bain resigned
tbh should let him have a go at CTO too at this point

maybe if management spent more time using the product instead of playing musical chairs with org charts, twitter would be in a better place

chuckles in Jack starving himself for some reason

love too rebrand eating disorders as a hip new trend for men to prove their masculinity

2:12 AM
Female student expelled for kneeing boy who was in bathroom to protest transgender student http://hill.cm/stFgl8y
to be honest i don't think she should have been expelled but maybe because it's more that i don't trust the boys in their "protest"
they don't like a transgender student using their bathroom so they go into the female bathroom obvious to try and provoke some sort of discomfort. an actual transgender person using the bathroom wouldn't do that

2:30 AM
Wow what the actual fuck
Last I heard she'd been suspended while the school investigated but, silly me, somehow I thought that would result in no displinary action against her because -- and this seems like an uncontroversial policy to me -- groups of boys should not be blockading the girl's washrooms

@ToxicFrog according to the article they boys were in there

@Memor-X yes; AIUI they entered the girl's washroom and blocked the door, preventing her from leaving, so she kneed one of them in the groin

@ToxicFrog ok, that sounds worse

The original reportage I read may have been incorrect, I haven't seen any updates apart from the one you posted
But that was the original story

WOW! There was a huge #meteor visible from the DC area tonight just before 11 p.m. Video: Steve Chazin #breaking #DCmeteor #DC https://t.co/K8BRf7wjCs
stares directly into camera :|
(President of Taiwan, obviously)
I wouldn't trust anyone who said (a) god specifically told them to run for political office, tbh, or someone who lied about building factories in Wisconsin

user15026
4:31 AM
@TimStone I....is this legit? Like an actual for real thing

user15026
what

user15026
like why

Yeah, I had a comment about it but I realised retrospectively it seemed dismissive of the religion
> Gou was speaking at a temple devoted to the sea goddess Mazu, according to Reuters

user15026
mmmmokay that kinda gives it context

user15026
but I don't really trust the whole "god of any type telling you to be the ruler of the rest of the very human meatpuppets" in any context, honestly

user15026
4:34 AM
it feels too close to "I am the chosen one" which...sits in very uncomfortable spaces

The weird part is that he hasn't decided if he's going to run, apparently? The goddess just told him he should? Which like??

user15026
So it's more "she told me but I am just, y'know, taking it under advisement, as you do"

Well, correction, I guess the tweet is implying he has decided to run, but as originally reported he was on the fence
About the advice. From the divine being
Right, as one does

sometimes this stuff gets mistranslated

Trump vetoes congressional resolution to end U.S. involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen. Says the resolution is "an unnecessary, dangerous attempt to weaken my constitutional authorities..." Second veto of his presidency after the national emergency one.

@TimStone it really always has to be about him doesn't it

@Memor-X yes

I'm not 100% on what he believes is his constitutional authority here
But as usual it doesn't matter because nothing does
BREAKING: New Jeffrey Epstein accuser goes public; defamation lawsuit targets Dershowitz https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/article229277874.html

Meanwhile in Alberta: Fuckity fuck fuck fuck, this is very bad: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/alberta-election-day-1.5099183 Alberta is now led by ultra-conservative toxic hate-mongers with a fatalism complex. So that’s a thing.
Canada I thought y’all were better than this

3 hours later…
11:17 AM
I am not looking forward to our next elections, provincial or federal, given we’ve done fuck all with electoral reform. I just want a government that isn’t actively destroying our future, and yet that seems like an unrealistically high standard.
This is my greatest fear
And fuck truedeu for that lack of reform
@GodEmperorDune Alberta biggest industry is oil, which is struggling, so naturally we get a new hate party wooooo
We're pretty much fucked at this point

11:32 AM
This is pretty much expected though, sadly.
the two right parties joined for starters, which is where the UCP came from. I think the NDP won last time with 40% of the vote, so Alberta always leaned right, NDP just won the vote split.
That's where the federal PC party came from too
as in, two other right parties joined together
and naturally when they joined they started to double down on the bigotry
This is the party that wanted to force schools to alert children who join LGBT alliances.
If such a thing gets passed, then I'm hoping that well for one the schools will tell them "go fuck yourself" and also the students will all band together and just almost all of them just join the LGBT alliances. Won't be able to actually single out any LGBT people then.

12:27 PM
aaaaaauuugh

:49959318 So that's REALLY frustrating, but I'm going to delete this. It's not news, but just some dumb redditors being dumb. Because REASONS we're going to try to be a biiiit more heavy handed with enforcing "just news, and not examples of randoms saying dumb stuff on the internet". And those REASONS are basically some complaints and observations about their being some inconsistencies with how we enforce the "room is for news items" rule.

> [UPC leader Jason Kenney] also promised to combat "foreign-funded special interests" like the Tides Foundation and the David Suzuki Foundation
David Suzuki is Canadian, and so is his foundation

[(((foreign-funded)))](wikipedia/george_soros), is probably where he's going
it doesn't have to make sense or be right
see above

I mean, I don't know how much US and overseas money comes in to the foundation, but I doubt it's more (or much more) than half.

it doesn't have to make sense or be correct, it's about insinuating that any vaguely liberal money is dirty somehow

12:42 PM
> The David Suzuki Foundation's financial and donor information is available on the Foundation website. For 2011/12, most funding (59%) came from individual donors. Foundations and businesses provided another 25% and 13% respectively. More than 95% was from Canadian donors. The David Suzuki Foundation also has an Ethical Gift Acceptance policy.

@Wipqozn sorry to be "that guy" since I'm one of the people that made such an observation, but would it be fair to say a news item needs to include at least 1 link to a reputable external news source to be considered a news item?
Essentially so we can say "Trump tweets are not news"

@Wipqozn The rule is "stars are for news items". Are we moving to "all external links must be news items"?

[mods are awake do anarchy](bowl.nnaf/I_don't_have_the_link_on_hand)

user15026
@Nzall I don't think that that is a fair thing, no.

@Yuuki It's been brought up before, and there is "Discussion should primarily be about news topics" in the description. Essentially the purpose of the room isn't just to mock randoms on social media.

user15026
12:57 PM
(mostly for the "reputable" bit, because that's gonna get weird to judge I think)

user15026
@Wipqozn wholeheartedly agree, this room is not just for dunking on other humans.

@Nzall The president saying something can be news, yes.
Trump has declare public policiy on twitter before. That's news.

@Wipqozn Yeah, but if he says "the French should use tankers to fight the Notre Dame fire", that's not really public policy, right? While if Trump declares public policy on Twitter, it's probably easy to find a reputable news source reporting on it

There really isn't a big difference between Trump saying something at a press conference or on Twitter, except the latter one-boxes here nicely

user15026
Not every Trump tweet is news, because sometimes he's just making incoherent sound. But some are.

user15026
1:01 PM
Saying everything has to link to some external thing doesn't make sense (and extends beyond Trump tweets).

user15026
(please don't get stuck on one example, the intent is super not to rules lawyer this room to death - if we gotta do that, then the room is not worth it)

@Wipqozn "primarily" doesn't mean "always" AFAIK, but "for the most part". However, I don't think it's in the best interest of this room to get hung up on that

@Nzall No it doesn't

In any case, I understand why that was removed even if my intent wasn't so much to dunk on randoms as it was to scream internally.

Like @Ash we're not trying to rules lawyer this place, but when we start getting complaints from regulars that we're being inconsistent, and those inconsistencies may be due to our own political biases, then we need to start being more aware of when we may letting things slide since they just line up with our own political biases.

user15026
1:06 PM
Pretty much. And now y'all are aware, again, so we can move on. :)

@Yuuki yeah and that's definitely part of why we made the room. In fact when we were discussing "what to do with politics in the bridge" one thing brought up in favour of a room is if we didn't have a place to vent about the current world insanity (trump, brexit, et cetera) we'd probably all go insane :).
but at the same time yeah, shouldn't just seem like we're shaming some random person in reddit or whatever.
Anyways, I gotta get back to work
Although I'll end this by saying that like, 90% of the time, the links shared in the room is totally fine.
Sp O
also, because we're on the topic, and I think 95% of you all know this BUT: Technology and science news is still totally fine to post in the bridge. I've seen some folks migrate that stuff here thinking they need to, but you don't. That's totally fine in both locations.
so like, don't feel like you need to keep it here
Okay now I actually need to get back to work
and also just stop talking

At least 18 districts closed hundreds of schools last night and told more than 500,000 students to stay home. Police are searching for a young woman who's made a credible threat, just days before the 20th anniversary of the Columbine shootings. https://t.co/UlVYBixXlF
an 18 year old woman who is infatuated with the columbine shooting flew from florida to denver, made threats, bought a shotgun, and is currently at large

The Pentagon has decided not to declassify the number of nuclear weapons in the US stockpile. The decision breaks with years of the United States providing nuclear transparency. https://fas.org/blogs/security/2019/04/stockpilenumbersecret/
Given that the answer is always "a world-destroying amount" I'm not really sure what the purpose is in not providing the numbers

@Unionhawk i heard about the schools being closed this morning because of credible threats, didn't know who was making them
i'm going to guess that there was warning signs for this that no one took notice of

the warning signs were "being obsessed with the 1999 columbine shooters" and "flying to denver, making threats, buying a shotgun"

My latest feature for @NYMag is a deep dive into an experiment in government austerity: McKinsey's all-encompassing work on the bankrupt island of Puerto Rico, which is spending more than $1 billion on advice from consultants and lawyers http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/04/mckinsey-in-puerto-rico.html

@Unionhawk ok yeh but i was more thinking about something that would, you know, scream out that this person shouldn't be legally sold a gun no matter what your amendments say

In my limited experience, gun sellers are very lax regarding anything close to background checks.
Then again, my limited experience was at a gun show.

2:08 PM
she probably background checked clean tbh

But I walked in with my dad, he provided a driver's license, and we literally walked out with a gun five minutes later.

@Yuuki there's usually no legal requirement at a gun show ("it's technically a private sale between two individuals")

There's no way there was enough time to even do a background check.

it just sorta reminds me of thing i heard on the radio this morning about that if you have a gun, it should be assumed as an absolute fact that you will use it to kill someone
or something if we're talking about hunting
@TimStone because Trump wants to back out of the nuclear proliferation treaty? (this is assuming Trump is making the Pentagon do this)

@TimStone Probably because we already gave some nukes to the Saudis under the table or something.

2:17 PM
@Yuuki maybe a noticeable some to the average to make people ask questions

1 hour later…
3:17 PM
................what
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Excuse me?

he just threatened people like me that's not a crime
@Yuuki oh god that game is free on Uplay through April 25

@Unionhawk I got it from Humble Bundle myself.

IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO ME THAT EVERYONE KNOWS THERE IS A TINY PONY WITH A PINK MANE RUNNING WILD ON AN ISLAND IN MONTREAL AND NO ONE KNOWS HOW IT GOT THERE AND THEY CAN'T CATCH IT http://ctv.news/enIcrHe

It's important that absolutely no one gets to the bottom of this

3:33 PM
@TimStone Scumbag consulting company taking advantage of an island in crisis? Shocked, shocked I say! (Thanks for the link)

They're just trying to add to their portfolio of heinous acts
I think that was the descriptor the judge used

An airport body scanner called millimeter wave machines can’t read certain type of hairs or hairstyles, like afros, braids, twists, locks, curls, ponytails and buns. https://propub.li/2PhNVp5

@TimStone Good memory.

@GodEmperorDune The horse obviously took the metro. Berri-UQAM is such a busy station nobody would notice anyway, and it's only one stop to the island.

4:18 PM
@Nzall I appreciate that ND was a disaster but why are we all rushing to donate to that when like....augh people.

user15026
ahem sorry

@Ash Ubisoft is a French company, based in Paris, and that game they're giving away actually had a highly publicized level that took place in the Notre Dame (in fact, they used it in their promotional material as a showcase of their new mission type), so I pretty much expected that they would give it away
FUCK. THAT. SHIT
for those that don't want to click: Google is going to make it even harder to get from the AMP link to the original site

uuuuuugh
amp is the worst thing
I mean, a lot of websites have terrible mobile design, yes, but amp is still terrible.

user15026
....I know.

user15026
It's not the game part that bugs me

user15026
4:28 PM
it's the monetary donation part

user15026
but I am not going to get into that here, it's not worth it honestly.

user15026
Rich people gonna rich people.

The worst part about AMP for me is not that it looks differently, but rather that Google doesn't even bother redirecting people to the non-AMP version if people visit an AMP link on a non-mobile device

@Nzall I think they mean that money would be better spent helping people in need, and not fixing a building, as historic as it might be.

Like, if Google could fix that fundamental issue with AMP...

4:33 PM
@Nzall ... which, by the sounds of it, is what they're doing by showing the non-amp URL in the URL bar.

Not looking to get into a debate about that, but you seemed to miss their point is all.

@MBraedley No, they clarified it. They're showing the AMP url from the source site, not their own google.com/amp url
> This article previously said that the address bar would show the original page URL, but it will actually show the address to the AMP version on the site's own domain. This has been clarified.
I've been considering for a while now to switch to a different browser on all my devices, like Firefox or something

@Nzall Okay, yeah, that part still sucks.
I'm generally fine with sites that show me their amp page when I'm at their site, but I've only rarely seen the Google cached version.

Ave
IMO what makes a historic monument a historic monument is not the art in it or the whatever material it's made with, and if it burns down, it burns down forever. You may reconstruct the material, but you can't reconstruct the history.
And as wipqozn said, that money could be spent on much better things.

@MBraedley Trust me, most AMP versions are horrible on a desktop. They're designed to have no javascript and fill the page, which is fine on a mobile device but appears very poorly on a desktop device. It also completely goes against one of the most important principles of content-oriented sites, namely responsive design

4:43 PM
@Nzall Oh, I know, I don't want to see them on desktop either. I'm talking specifically about my interaction with them on my phone.

Ave
@Ave *it's made with, it's the history that's associated with it

user15026
@Wipqozn well, it's less "don't fix it" and more "Do you realize how much money the Catholic church has and people are tripping over themselves to donate MILLIONS AND MILLIONS (okay not in Ubi's case, but it's a wider thing) when so many things go without"

A Billion overall afaik

It kinda reminds me of sports stadiums.

user15026
@Unionhawk aaaaaaaaaaa

4:48 PM
a thousand million dollars is a fun number to play with

something something sports is a religion

I can say without mentioning numbers that the expenditure of churches could be really smaller

user15026
@Yuuki oh definitely yeah, you can make that point for sure

user15026
@Moacir In many cases, yes

I once did accounting for that

4:49 PM
But yeah, sports teams get municipalities to fund their stadiums and they (the team) gets to own the profits from the stadiums. It definitely sounds a lot like the rich as hell Catholic Church getting the public to fund the reconstruction and they still get the proceeds from the tourism to Notre Dame.

oh yeah Cincinnati knows all about shitty stadium deals lol

One thing that baffled me was that one of those small town churches, the priest changed his car EVERY YEAR
I mean, why?

I gladly supported municipal money funding our new stadium, but the CFL doesn't have huge profit margins.

It's absolutely grotesque.

If the car was really used or anything
But no, just because it had a year, it had to be changed with a new one

4:50 PM
I think the Paul Brown Stadium deal is considered one of the worst stadium deals of all time
for a shitty football team
that hasn't been good since the 1980s

@JasonBerkan I don't have an issue with municipal funding in and of itself, the problem is when the team also gets all the profits from the stadium. Like if there's a concert or something, the team gets a portion of the ticket proceeds.

@Moacir probably a lease

Rather than, say, the city that paid for the stadium.

@Chippies No. Not a lease. New car from the distributor

they didn't own the car, they were basically renting it for a year

4:51 PM
I can attest that because I had the documents to do the accounting thinghy

@Yuuki I don't know the details, but I think it's setup that way here. Pretty sure the city tax charge on the stadium is $1 / year.

Lease is a different kind of document

@Moacir cars can be either fully financed (i.e purchased) or bought on a lease, which is much cheaper, but at the end you either return the car or you pay a bunch of extra money to buy it

Local funding should mean that the stadium is a municipal asset. The sports team can play there for free, but they shouldn't get ticket proceeds from unrelated use.

@Moacir oh well that's different then

4:52 PM
@Ash as far as I understand it doesn't belong to the Catholich Church

@Ash Actually I don't know if they own it. Supposedly ownership of it is complicated?
Oh @MadScientist beat me to it

@Wipqozn Like about 70 other churches, it's part of the French State

Notre-Dame de Paris (; French: [nɔtʁə dam də paʁi] (listen); meaning "Our Lady of Paris"), often referred to simply as Notre-Dame, is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, France. The cathedral is consecrated to the Virgin Mary and considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Its innovative use of the rib vault and flying buttress, its enormous and colourful rose windows, and the naturalism and abundance of its sculptural decoration set it apart from the earlier Romanesque style. The cathedral was begun in 1160 under...

it's owned by France, the Church has the exclusive right to use it forever, and the Church also has to pay employees, security, heating, and cleaning, and they're also responsible for making sure it's open to visitors.

it's as much a tourist attraction and historic building as a church, probably even more

4:57 PM
Well, we once had a story here in Brazil where one of those rich rich people did a party that cost 1 million. A birthday party. For the family dog.

more specifically, it's owned by France because it was built prior to the 1905 law regarding the separation of church and state
either way, France is a whole-ass country too, and one would imagine the Church would have an interest in financing the restoration anyway, not that either of those things matter at this point

Ave
@Moacir yikes.

@GodEmperorDune why... Did they not use his name in the headline? Reducing him to race is terrible

@HalfEmpty its in the headline

Not the tweet I guess
Seems shitty, does that guy work for verge lol??

not in the tweet because the #yanggang is obnoxious on twitter and namesearches

59 messages moved from The Bridge

I don't know what any of that means but it sounds pretty dumb

5:38 PM
@GodEmperorDune On the one hand, yes. On the other hand, "the Asian American presidential candidate" still bothers me.

@HalfEmpty Indeed. That you are jeff bezos game does a great job of that too.

@Wipqozn thats a lot of bridge messages
@Yuuki if a mod will delete, i'll find an alternate tweet

@Yuuki me too

I don't think "move this discussion to TIF" should mean literally migrating the whole discussion.

Meh
It's here now

5:39 PM
@Yuuki Folks seemed to want to keep discussing it, so it mine as well just all be in one place.

Sorry I didn't have anything else to add

@GodEmperorDune hm, does he have any plans to actually do any regulation?
because saying "ok I'll give $1000 to everyone per month" is how you have massive inflation.

@Unionhawk ah, then it's bullshit.

because they're Really Dumb

@Unionhawk how amazing
I assume he has no plans of widespread, affordable, decent govt-ran housing either.

Seems bad

@Unionhawk In Brazil there are laws to avoid that, but are pretty easy to circunvent

this pretty much sums it up for me
he sees a problem, wants to help, puts together a single idea to do it

Ave
If you're not a politician and don't know how to do actual politics, then don't do politics.
That's my hot take.
@Ave (FWIW, turkey had govt-ran decent and affordable grocery stores until recently as the prices for food went up too high for a lot of people to be able to afford, the municipality shut them down when they lost the elections)

the way the US system is set up, presidents don't actually have to be good at policy. policy is created by congress and implemented by executive branch appointments
personally i want a president who is decent enough at policy to provide vision on what the policy should be and help marketing it

They... really don't plan ahead, do they?
Although given everything that's going on the GOP, I suppose their hallmark is their short-sightedness.

The battle between Hollywood writers and agents got uglier today, with a lawsuit filed by the WGA against Hollywood's four main talent agencies -- CAA, WME, ICM UTA -- alleging that packaging fees violate California and federal law. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/la-fi-ct-wga-agencies-lawsuit-20190417-story.html

Steve Mnuchin plans to hire Fox News commentator Monica Crowley as his top spokeswoman, Bloomberg reports. Reminder: Trump planned to appoint Crowley to a position at the NSC, but she withdrew after CNN reported she had plagiarized portions of her book. https://bloom.bg/2Gul9Py
Can't shame someone for the same thing twice taps head
This is incredible, 3 of the top tech/biz outlets have had insane issues with the galaxy fold. The exact things that you’d be anxious about happening if you bought one or were thinking about buying one https://twitter.com/stevekovach/status/1118571414934753280
btw definitely don't buy the Galaxy Fold 🤷🏼‍♂️

The phone comes with this protective layer/film. Samsung says you are not supposed to remove it. I removed it, not knowing you’re not supposed to (consumers won’t know either). It appeared removable in the left corner, so I took it off. I believe this contributed to the problem.

@GodEmperorDune No, but it's just as useless after it breaks

It just breaks, but it does have a removable film you're not meant to remove

@TimStone so what they're saying is that there are definitely plans to do it as part of or after the peace plan

although that was just a temporary break, not permanent like this

@Unionhawk Bibi said he'd do it and got reelected on that premise because everyone likes war crimes apparently

@TimStone uhhhhhh why not leave the west bank unannexed instead
@TimStone love to prop up an aparteid state

@TimStone apparently jared's plan is dead on arrival which of course it is we don't negotiate this in good faith
it's always an exercise in "we demand all these things" "no what why would we agree to that" "hmm it looks like the arabs do not want peace"

I just think it's funny he's waiting to show us the dumb plan that everyone knows won't work and is just war crimes

Prosecutors are taking their frustrations out on Kraft. But remember, the state also claimed that the woman in the video was trafficked, and therefore victimized. If that's true, wouldn't releasing the video further humiliate her? https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/Report-Florida-Prosecutors-Say-Theyll-Release-Videos-of-Robert-Kraft-508700741.html?akmobile=o

the united states pretends to be a neutral arbitrator even though this is expressly and obviously not the case

tbh there really is no public benefit in anyone seeing Robert Kraft getting a handy and actually it is in the public interest that no one sees that, ever
Also Bolton is saying some equally war mongering crap about Cuba right now
At that Bay of Pigs Veterans Memorial event which I'd personally try to forget that one but y'all do you I guess
