@TimStone relatedly, I had a satisfying unsubscribe the other day (rich cordray emailed me something like "WOULD YOU LIKE OBAMA ON THE COURT [YES/NO]" so I just copied his whole email header into the reason for unsubscribing

12:38 AM
2. The 'Grand Wizards' (the new name for the Chequer's daytrippers apparently) also had another meeting this morning, were they discussed again whether they could get on board to back PM's deal and there was no firm conclusion
I'm sorry the who now

@Unionhawk Yeah, that name is taken, and it's not by a good group.

Secret recordings have revealed senior One Nation party figures met the American National Rifle Association last year to seek tens of millions of dollars in political donations http://bit.ly/2TVZSq5
yep, the NRA is not content with uncontrolled gun violence in just the US
Sarah Sanders: "The president's spoken on this already. He wants full transparency as he does in everything every day." https://t.co/xGwutDd0KM
lol, yeh because that's why he wont release his tax returns
and why he tried to shut down the probe

1:19 AM
@Memor-X tbh that's pretty funny because last I heard the NRA's cashflow was a wee bit restricted
@Unionhawk ಠ_ಠ

@TimStone government restricted or "we don't have millions of dollars to spend" restricted? because the recording would explain why the latter

The latter, yeah

2:15 AM

@Unionhawk your healthcare system is shite

@Memor-X Yep

also one has to think of the mentality that assumes everyone is going to skip out of the hospital bill and reminds you to pay at those moments

@Memor-X And won't release the report
Seriously, I'm not sure how her head hasn't imploded with the enormity of the lies she tells

2:39 AM
@SaintWacko its cushioned by all the money she stands to make for the rest of her life provided she toes the party line

Sarah Sanders: "They literally accused the President of the United States of being an agent for a foreign government. That's equivalent to treason. That's punishable by death in this country." https://t.co/AwnKCycW44
ummmmm, i don't think that's right....is it? that treason is a death sentence in the US?

As far as I can tell, yes, treason against the federal government (still) carries the death penalty

Joe Rogan went on Infowars today, the same day a man who lost his child in the Sandy Hook shooting committed suicide. The grieving father was among the plaintiffs suing Alex Jones for defamation after smearing the murdered children and their parents as part of a hoax. https://t.co/vlBzRsFrZP
@Memor-X treason is a death sentence, but criticizing the president is not treason

6:41 AM
I think she was saying that being an agent for a foreign government is equivalent to treason

Edmonton Journal: UCP would roll back school protections for LGBTQ students, add new provincial exams.
https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/ucp-would-roll-back-school-protections-for-lgbtq-students-add-new-provincial-exams
UCP = United Conservative Party
> UCP Leader Jason Kenney said Monday if elected to government, his party would replace Alberta’s School Act with the former Progressive Conservative government’s Education Act. It would eliminate changes the NDP introduced with Bill 24, which requires school principals to immediately grant student requests to form a gay-straight alliance and requires private schools to have publicly available policies to protect LGBTQ students.
> "We want safe schools, we want peer support for kids who need it, and I think we can do it while respecting the basic religious freedom of faith-based independent schools,” Kenney said in Calgary Monday.
Ah yes, the good ol' bigotry is a-okay when it's done by Christian's excuse
> The NDP’s Bill 24 attempted to prevent school staff from outing LGBTQ kids by saying the only information they could give parents and guardians about a GSA was that one existed at the school.
> Opponents said Bill 24 allows school staff to keep secrets from families.
Yeah it does, to protect children from a bunch of bigots who want to hurt them. Why else would you need to know if a child is LGBTQ?
I thought Wikipedia one boxed

@Wipqozn it does

Anyways, was just going to state the UCP is an Alberta party formed in 2017. It's not the main federal Conservative party.

@Wipqozn so teachers shouldn't respect a child's right to privacy like what a doctor does?

@Wipqozn think it's the mobile link
The United Conservative Party (UCP; French: Parti conservateur uni) is a conservative political party in the province of Alberta, Canada. It was established in July 2017 as a merger between the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta and the Wildrose Party. The UCP currently forms the Official Opposition in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. == History == === Background === The Wildrose Party largely consisted of former PC supporters dissatisfied with the longstanding PC government for various reasons. Three of the first five Wildrose MLAs were defecters originally elected as ...
yep, remove the .m

10:33 AM
@Memor-X Nope, it would get in the way of the right of bigots to go around harassing LGBT folks. We can't have that!

@Wipqozn ofcause not because free speech!

BREAKING: Europe’s MEPs cave to lobbyists, ignore five million online petitioners, hundreds of thousands of protesters, and approve #article13 and #article11. Find out what happens to the disastrous Copyright Directive next: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/03/eus-parliament-signs-disastrous-internet-law-what-happens-next
siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiighs

I'm angry, but I'm not surprised

Voting on individual amendments (like the proposal to delete #Article13) was rejected by a majority of just 5 votes. #SaveYourInternet

Oof

I guess their opponents now have a much stronger platform to run on.
Although, getting rid of it piecemeal is likely to be incredibly difficult.

@Kevin tldr on what those are?

12:21 PM
Requiring internet filters amongst others

@Wipqozn Article 13 imposes copyright upload filters for pretty much every website
And Article 11 is a link tax for sharing news articles

I don't know enough to have a proper tl;dr

I wouldn't be surprised if Youtube withdrew from the EU entirely
AFAIK Google News is already planning to

Article 13 also contradicts earlier laws and jurisprudence that disallow any requirement to implement proactive filtering of that sort, so that's going to be """fun""" to see get hashed out in the courts

12:37 PM
It's gonna be sucky

so how soon can your new politicians repeal them?

There's elections in may
IIRC
23rd to 26th

I need to check how Bart Staes voted, who is the MP I voted for

1:00 PM
Sounds fucked

1:31 PM
@murgatroid99 Yeah just had a chance to listen to the whole thing and you're right
The hill definitely took that out of context

2:21 PM
Is there anywhere that politics isn't a tyre fire?

Yeessssss, if you count places where there is no politics

Oh wait NZ has decent politicians
I think?
Decent PM at any rate

@Nzall What does that mean?

NZ has had some IP law stuff that I didn't agree with, but otherwise seems like a nice place to live when considering only the politics.

@SaintWacko It means that Google et al. will have to pay news orgs if they share a link to an article

2:26 PM
@Nzall ...What? How does that make sense? "Now you have to pay us for giving us traffic"

When Spain introduced such a link tax a couple years ago, it was considered a massive failure because most news aggregators just withdrew from Spain

Well duh

Also, ignoring the broken promises and current scandal, Canadian federal politics hasn't been a complete dumpster fire.

It's not just giving news orgs free advertising, it's making news aggregators pay the news orgs to advertise for them
That's insane

Despite my current unfavourable view of the government, they at least aren't as bad as the Harper government.

2:42 PM
@MBraedley I've heard some stuff about NZ being somewhat tight on censorship, but that's probably good for the immediate now. Who knows about future stuff though.

I remember the whole Kim Dotcom thing
NZ is also gorge though

3:07 PM
@MBraedley I agree with that. Trudeau's been more or less just trudging along. No scandals, no corruption, until now.
I think things would go way better for all constituents if the best you could get was a minority government. Maybe teach these old men acting like babies to work together.

@Frank I'd actually be really happy with a Liberal-NDP minority government.

I don't even care which ones. Compromise. Quit pushing your agenda alone, and more people will be better off.

3:22 PM
@Kevin y'all really had to hold our beer after we passed SESTA/FOSTA, didn't you

Yeaaaaaah

BREAKING NEWS: Jussie Smollett's lawyers say all charges against him have been dropped https://cnn.it/2FBqior
Chicago PD told me they have "no comment" on this breaking Jussie Smollett motion and deferred once again to State Attorneys office. when I pressed, saying the PD has been involved in the case, they again said "no comment" https://twitter.com/TasneemN/status/1110560460053585922

I had seen, though not verified, that the texts he exchanged with the brothers and the subsequent check appeared to actually be for the fitness training he claimed, at least on the surface. If the brothers did not provide evidence to bolster the police's narrative it's very possible there was just no case, I guess? But that would raise significant questions about what started that narrative in the first place, then

@TimStone i mean its chicago PD, the most upstanding of all police departments that definitely doesn't have corrupt tendencies in public events the last few years

Right? But yeah, so if we were to assume they made it up then…he did get attacked, by people not ever arrested?
The lack of explanation is very unsatisfactory!

3:35 PM
@TimStone I don't even know what to think anymore...

@GodEmperorDune "the last few years" doing some work in that sentence

@puzzlepiece87 TBH I forgot how long ago it was that they refused to release the tape of when they killed Macdonald, even after the court told them they had to

I mean also the torture sites though
My god opening Twitter is like a reflex now, a very unhealthy one :|

3:54 PM
Dammit Bart Staes... You're the only MEP for Groen! in the EP, I voted for you, why would you vote in favor?

@TimStone doesn't your phone have digital wellbeing? you can set it to 0 minutes to avoid uninstalling
unless this is chrome->type t->enter
in which case I can't help you

You damn kids and your technology

You could always block it with an ad blocker, although that might cause more issues than it solves.

4:19 PM
@GodEmperorDune No no friend, Chicago PD has long been one of the country's worst police departments, like LA and Baltimore.
Make sure to check out the graph which goes back to only 2008 and shows over $50M in police misconduct settlements in the very first year.
More than $75 million the year before McDonald was even murdered
The police are bad but some departments are and have been for decades, very very bad. It's good to know some of the worst offenders generally before you travel.

I would like to let the official record state that I have not compromised anybody's account

@Unionhawk That's not suspicious at all

48 years seemed a bit extreme

@TimStone I thought they had this guy like dead to rights

Nova Scotia budget sees $200M boost in health-care spending

Cc @MBraedley

4:51 PM
@Wipqozn I mean, I get the feeling they're only spending it on health care because Ottawa says they have to spend it on healthcare, but maybe that's just the cynic in me.

@MBraedley Yeah that wouldn't surprise me, since McNeil loves to deny there's even a crisis, but I'm happy either way.

I'm also slightly jaded because I'm of the opinion that Karen Casey has been failing upward in this government.
... and the previous PC government

7:06 PM
> If I had to guess, I'd say it's because the police got over-excited about nabbing a celebrity and made a number of legal and procedural fuck-ups in their pursuit of a conviction. Holding a press conference basically announcing Smollett to be guilty before they had all the facts is the sort of thing that any good lawyer could rip them to shreds over.

@Yuuki Basically "If this ever goes to trial, the judge will be forced to dismiss due the procedural fuck-ups."

@puzzlepiece87 oh yeah i know they have been corrupt since they started.

@MBraedley Probably.

@Yuuki as always, the solution to this is not "woe is the justice system, technicalities ruined everything" but "police, don't fuck up the procedures"

I wouldn't be surprised that it's this and not bribery, even given Chicago PD's general reputation.
@GodEmperorDune Yeah, unfortunately police are rather experienced in procedural mismanagement.

7:15 PM
@Yuuki who wrote that?
Idk man he gave up his $10,00 bond and where is the conviction on the guys who supposedly attacked him then
I haven't been following it that closely but

@BunsGlazing you know that the person only has to pay 10% of the bond price up front, right?
the other 90% is only if they don't show up to court

No I don't know what that even was tbh
Makes sense
Still I thought that guy was supposed to be guilty
"volunteer service"
Blame it on the police I guess

Today, we’re launching The Gender Spectrum Collection, a stock photo library of over 180 images of 15 trans and non-binary models, made available to the public for free. Read more from our Editor in Chief @LindsaySchrupp: https://bit.ly/2WrBmdj

The lawyer statements and everything afterwards just seems suspect

user15026
@GodEmperorDune I love that this exists.

7:24 PM
@BunsGlazing i agree, it's extremely weird now
@Ash hopefully it gets other stock libraries to repeat it in their own collections

user15026
I hope so. I like that they pointed out how often trans and enby people get reduced to headless body part shots.

user15026
I also like that they're not "oh look at me putting on makeup or holding a trans flag" type shots as well

user15026
It's so nicely humanizibng

@Ash Well said

Except for my spelling mistake though :P

ehh, you do you

7:58 PM
NEWS: Trump is preparing to sign an executive order meant to help deal with potential electromagnetic pulse events. Some lawmakers and scientists have long worried that a rogue nation with the technological know-how might attack the U.S. electric grid with an EMP.
uhhhhh maybe don't piss off other nations and they won't try to EMP us? just sayin

@GodEmperorDune don't you have to light a nuke in the air above the target for that? And isn't the existing answer to anyone doing that to the US simply "nuke them back?"

@MadScientist I mean, that's one way to generate an emp
Another way is to induce a sudden change in current in a wire coil

@GodEmperorDune Oh no I know someone on Twitter who will be particularly angry about this

@SaintWacko are there any non-nuclear EMP devices that are powerful and small enough to be used by terrorists or on a missile?

No

8:06 PM
@MadScientist That I'm not sure about
I mean, maybe you could have a truck sized one?

So it's a really dumb concern because anything triggering an EMP is actually doing far more significant physical damage at the moment

@MadScientist That's the "easiest" way to get a large EMP, but not the only way.

If you want to attack the US electric grid right now, it's probably far easier to get a bunch of script kiddies to hack some part of it, or drive a small bomb to some important point and just blast the thing the old fashioned way

@TimStone The altitude you'd detonate a nuke for maximum coverage wouldn't do that much damage, would it?

@MadScientist Wikipedia seems to indicate yes, but the target area would be much smaller than that of a nuke.

8:18 PM
@GodEmperorDune you get most of it back if you show up to court too

@SaintWacko The issue is that you have to have the EMP be strong enough to actually do lasting damage but also somehow not destroy things and it's a very fiddly tradeoff
So like, if you're going to launch a nuke you gotta make sure it does what it's supposed to because the response will be severe
Which is why just actually leveling stuff with it is far more likely
So the strategic math in "Let's nuke them but just for the EMP effect" is just bad and it's silly to get worked up over it
Of course I'm significantly more paranoid about a CME event even though that's also silly so I guess if it's just strengthening infrastructure that's not terrible 🤔

@GodEmperorDune Did you see the news on the gender-neutral voice?
Can't remember what it's called.

@MadScientist knew Mad Scientist before he was on a watchlist

@Yuuki Did…did they have to call it Q though? Feel like we just need to stay away from that letter for a bit

@TimStone See, the thing is, not everyone uses Twitter as a reflex.

8:34 PM
@TimStone There is actually a moment in Modern Warfare 3 (I think) where the USA detonates a nuke around the same height as the ISS above the eastern seaboard to trigger an EMP, though I don't know to what extent that would work
EMERGENCY LANDING AT OIA: A Southwest Boeing 737 Max plane had to make an emergency landing at the Orlando International Airport today after experiencing a malfunction. The plane was on its way to California to be grounded. UPDATES: http://bit.ly/2uvWByx
oh wait, that's Fox
sorry, but the article should remain relevant

@GodEmperorDune do you actually have a problem with this or are you just complaining for the sake of it lol
Technological warfare is probably gonna be a thing
@TimStone why tho

Fearmongering over EMP threats instead of addressing more pressing concerns

@TimStone I don't know, with his ideas of "more pressing concerns" this might be best for everyone

…Fair

8:52 PM
@TimStone what kind of concerns?

@TimStone like what
I don't see how preparedness takes away from other things I guess

9:19 PM
Well, preparing for a "migrant invasion" in Texas took away a bunch of military and funding that could've been used elsewhere.
Or in the case of the military, just left where they were because transporting them was also a huge cost.

9:42 PM
@BunsGlazing i have a problem with trump admin's foreign policy in general
but this was a bit of weird news that i thought might be interesting
@Yuuki i did, i was sad that Qanon kinda poisoned the name
its a cool project overall
@BunsGlazing opportunity costs, the time and effort put into one thing means other things are not being worked on

in general, using the state department to try to reduce global tensions and nukes and whatnot

@GodEmperorDune emphatic yelling and handflapping and cursing

@Ash if it helps any, presidential budgets are what the president WANTS to do, the vast majority of funding decisions are by congress

11:48 PM
@GodEmperorDune Dog whistling has caused permanent damage to my hearing through.
The attempt on my sanity has left me scarred and deformed.
