JUST IN: Trump argues campaigning for popular vote is "much easier" than campaigning for Electoral College http://hill.cm/xYksLhJ

@Memor-X So easy, in fact, that he completely lost it last time.

@Frank yep
his tweets in the article also described what happens in the electoral collage, not the popular vote
> Campaigning for the Popular Vote is much easier & different than campaigning for the Electoral College. It’s like training for the 100 yard dash vs. a marathon. The brilliance of the Electoral College is that you must go to many States to win. With the Popular Vote, you go to....

....just the large States - the Cities would end up running the Country. Smaller States & the entire Midwest would end up losing all power - & we can’t let that happen. I used to like the idea of the Popular Vote, but now realize the Electoral College is far better for the U.S.A.
and of cause he only like the popular vote before he lost it

@Memor-X cmon, get rid of the electoral college! do it!

Despite Trump's view, white nationalism is a growing threat, data shows cbc.ca/news/world/…
> According to the Anti-Defamation League, 98 per cent of extremist killings in the U.S. last year were tied to far-right extremists. Europol's annual EU Terrorism Situation and Trend Report last year found a near doubling in the number of people arrested for right-wing extremist offences in 2017.
> "In the U.S., far-right extremism has eclipsed violent Salafi jihadists," said the centre's director, Brian Levin. "The difference is white nationalism has emerged into a coalesced and growing socio-political force, with tentacles that extend into the mainstream. That's something many other extremist movements do not have."
I mean the movement currently has someone sitting in the oval off so yeah, it's gotten pretty strong
> Republican Congressman Steve King, for example, has openly mused that being labelled a "white nationalist" shouldn't be such a bad thing.
Hooooly fuck
> Forty-nine out of 50 extremist-related killings in the U.S. last year were tied to white nationalists.

@Wipqozn I think part of the issues is that some of the labels we use aren't quite up to the task of covering what it's about. Like, a lot of Americans think nationalism is a good thing: supporting your nation, so white nationalism seems to be good, right? We should probably be consistently calling white supremacy

> A 2017 ABC/Washington Post poll conducted in the aftermath of the fatal Charlottesville march found that nearly one in 10 Americans said they considered Nazi views to be acceptable.
Jfc
@Nzall I don't think that's true at all

I am considering running in the 2020 Democratic primary. The goal will not be to win, but to bring a critique of American imperialism to the Democratic debate stage. The website (http://mikegravel.org) is under construction. Official announcement will be in the coming days.
lol, hell yeah

@Wipqozn Oh right, I was mixing up patriotism and nationalism

That doesn't change the fact that lots of people do think nationalism is a good thing

11:48 AM
I keep mixing those 2 up because in C&C Generals, the Chinese have Patriotism as an upgrade for Nationalism, which made me believe patriotism was the more extreme variety

where every faction had 3 generals

@TimStone Good on them, but that's fucked. Your entire legal system is in dire need of an overhaul.

@Nzall Well, yeah, I just played Zero Hour
I usually played it with the Contra mod, though

and you'd pick one and have to fight 8 or 9 other generals

Opinion: I am an abortion rights activist. I hope the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade https://politi.co/2Jt4WgP
The upshot is that he believes that overturning Row v Wade would finally galvanize the pro-choice movement and cause them to take the threat to abortion seriously
which... isn't factually wrong, but is a really stupid argument. You have to factor in the actual damage done in the meantime
Like those who say "I'm glad we elected Trump! Look at how much its motivated the left!"
I mean, yeah, because we put a f-ing madman in the oval office with his finger on the nuclear button
But no, that doesn't mean we should wish for that result
Because once you lose Roe v Wade, then you've already f-ing lost. What are there, 25+ states with "trigger" laws already passed that will immediately ban all abortions once Roe falls?
So, lets say losing Roe does, in fact, finally motivate whole groups of pro-choice people (who weren't already sufficiently motivated)
What then? You think you're going to get abortion rights back in red states? How? When?
How long would it take? How many women lose their choice in the meanwhile? What is the cost, to their lives, to their future, to their health, for a choice that was no longer available to them?
Ok, I was going to say this was the worst opinion piece of the week. But then I saw this:
Opinion: Don't censor the New Zealand shooting videos https://politi.co/2JpVhYr
I'm not going to even read it

@BradC point of order: it is not an option that is currently available for many.

@Unionhawk Absolutely true. But clearly losing Roe multiplies those without access by a factor of 100x

@BradC This seems like the most stereotypical "privileged left-wing" opinion I've heard this week.

accelerationists are not comrades.
foh outta here with that shit

> Disengaged abortion rights supporters might finally see the slow, steady erosion of abortion rights as symptomatic of a broader and ever-expanding suppression of reproductive rights, and they might finally understand why it is necessary to start addressing barriers to access due to race, class and geography, even when abortion is legal.

3:03 PM
Just because you in your privileged circumstances probably won't need an abortion in the next several years (or perhaps your lifetime) doesn't mean that's the case for everyone else.

> Such a re-energized movement could prove powerful enough to reverse the rising red tide in state legislatures across the country. A new, more powerful abortion rights movement will certainly prove useful even after its advocates are able to restore the protections guaranteed by Roe v. Wade.

Just because you can afford to live for a certain undetermined amount of time without abortion rights doesn't mean that everyone can.

@Yuuki Exactly. To the conclusion I just posted above: the missing questions are: how long? and at what cost?

I do think there is something to be said about the sense of complacency that is real, roe being the law (well, planned parenthood v casey is really what we're at) isn't nearly sufficient

@BradC the generic term for this, btw, is "accelerationism" -- "the faster we make things worse the sooner people will stop half-assing improvement efforts"

3:07 PM
@GodEmperorDune loooooooool

I think the outcome here is carved in stone though
What we need to do is consider how to respond
which is super hard for like, me, being at the corner of OH, KY, and IN
a mutual-aid cross state lines op would require travel to IL
probably

@BradC It also ignores the tendency of some people to just go "well, I guess the world sucks now" and give up.

we met up with comrades from WV who did exactly that, bring people across the WV/MD border
or maybe it was the WV/PA border I forget

@Unionhawk I agree the outcome is likely inevitable, with this court makeup. (Plus, we're already mostly living in a post-Roe world since the courts have been unwilling to strike down TRAP laws clearly designed to shut down clinics)

there is 1 clinic in the state of kentucky.
And I'm not even 100% sure that information is still correct, it might be closed

3:11 PM
@ToxicFrog interesting, hadn't heard that term. Burn it all down so people get motivated to put out the fire?

Basically, yeah.

the 6 week ban is signed in ohio and it will be upheld
we can hope it doesn't get upheld all we want, but we must also plan for that outcome.

The underlying argument, basically, is that things are slowly getting worse already, but gradually and unevenly enough that there's no widespread motivation to fix them (or elect governments that will) -- the boiling frog problem.

real life accelerationists suck extreme amounts of ass, incidentally

But if we make things A LOT WORSE ALL AT ONCE, that will make people[1] sit up and take notice -- the frogs will jump out of the pot if you suddenly turn a flamethrower on it.

3:15 PM
@Wipqozn Good

[1] the ones who survive, anyways, which is somehow never a part that they say explicitly

@ToxicFrog How you expect frogs to fight against a flamethrower after they jump out of the pot is beyond me, by the way.

@ToxicFrog Yep. (tiny footnote in 5-point font)

@Yuuki the metaphor kind of comes apart there, in fairness
Maybe they're poison dart frogs and the survivors try to fling themselves against whoever is wielding the flamethrower, but that raises the question of why they were being boiled in the first place

Well, the other part of the metaphor that falls apart is that the boiling frog problem conveniently ignores that the frogs in question had been lobotomized before being put in the pot.

3:17 PM
In my defence I got six hours of sleep last night and the precision of my frog-based analogies is not a major priority for me right now

@ToxicFrog So... @ToxicFrogs?

@Unionhawk Haha awesome

@puzzlepiece87 he read until 1 a.m. until he said that he could no longer physically continue after 3 previous sleepless nights of fear for the future, and established unanimous consent (with no others present) to insert 4,100 pages of the papers into the congressional record of his committee

@Unionhawk Much easier to get unanimous consent of the committee when you're the only member in attendance
Incidentally, that's the method some have suggested Congress could use to make Trump's taxes public once the House gets them

@Unionhawk what is this twitter account?

3:29 PM
@Yuuki best I can really tell is teens who want him to run? I'm not 100% sure at this point
but like, no politician except donald trump and maybe some of the freshmen in the house write their own posts

I feel like most PR interns at least try to sound like the politician whose account they're managing.
But then again, I don't know Mike Gravel so who knows, maybe he does talk like this.

What little I have heard from I think 2008 debates seems to indicate that he's a kucinich type
so, yes? or close anyway?
I don't know but what I do know is that it would be extremely cool to see him at a debate
way cooler than 4chan's candidate

NEW: The leader of Nigel Farage's new “Brexit Party” has just resigned after a HOPE not hate investigation uncovered a trail of racist social media posts. Read all the details here: https://www.hopenothate.org.uk/2019/03/20/farages-brexit-party-leader-quits-hope-not-hate-uncovers-social-media-racism/

Wait isn't that just a prerequisite for joining the party?

I mean, is it any surprise that someone leading a Brexit Party is xenophobic?
We should note that Blaiklock insists that she is not racist, having told Vice News, “I sleep with somebody who is black, who is, you know, of Jamaican origin! So I am 100 percent not racist”. https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/d7aegq/a-ukip-candidate-brought-a-photo-of-her-black-husband-to-hustings-to-prove-ukip-isnt-racist

Ah, the tier upgrade to "I have a black best friend".

"I'm not racist! I have black friends"

@Nzall I read that as "not 100% racist"

3:55 PM
Can't wait for someone declaring "I'm not racist. I exclusively visit African hookers"
Or for the Christchurch attacker to say "I'm not islamophobic! some of my best known victims were muslims"
Also, note how she says "I sleep with a black person", not "my partner is a black person", which to me feels like she's only using him for sex

@Unionhawk Kickass, though what does inserting pages into the congressional record do?

The Congressional Record is the official record of the proceedings and debates of the United States Congress, published by the United States Government Publishing Office and issued when Congress is in session. Indexes are issued approximately every two weeks. At the end of a session of Congress, the daily editions are compiled in bound volumes constituting the permanent edition. Chapter 9 of Title 44 of the United States Code authorizes publication of the Congressional Record. == Overview == The Congressional Record consists of four sections: the House section, the Senate section, the Extensions...

If you had stopped at 1 a.m. etc, your post would have had the same current impact on me because I don't understand what having pages in the record accomplishes.
Does someone have to read through all of them in a later hearing?

The record is the official statement of what happened and is publicly available, so if someone puts statements "in the record", those records are effectively public

4:22 PM
@puzzlepiece87 The matter at issue here was that the government was attempting to make the dissemination of the papers illegal, I think
Since the Congressional record is public introducing such a thing there would keep it available under any external circumstances

4:43 PM

Lol professional bad writer Caitlin Flanagan claiming that we can't disown Michael Jackson songs without disowning all art
> You can cast away Picasso because Hannah Gadsby told you he was cruel to women. But can you cast away Guernica? Separate yourself from any art—even popular art; even art created simply as entertainment—and you separate yourself from all of it.
I am actually able to do this and still enjoy other art! Amazing!
Also, bs as usual on slippery slope arguments - how about we just draw the lines at serial abusers? How about that?
Before that abrupt concluding turn for the stupid, Flanagan wrote a good summary of the Finding Neverland documentary.
But as usual she dropped the ball.
The hard part is that I want to read coverage about the things she is assigned to write about - she gets or finds for herself a lot of interesting topics to cover!
I just want someone that doesn't consistently pair those important topics with dumb takes.
I want to know about Michael Jackson's crimes and how we enabled them. I want to know about how developments in modern feminism, etc.
And again, Jemele Hill continues to write reasonably insightful stuff, but it's always sports or blackness related. I really think she's smart and talented enough to be able to branch out and cover other things, among other candidates for Flanagan replacement.
Do better The Atlantic
(Another bad headline though - the article has little to do with the small note about medusas)
