Quite possibly the most depressing thing I've read in a while - Can the world stop genocide?
> The world has unwittingly created a hierarchy of suffering. Philippe Sands, a human-rights lawyer, argues that the creation of the crime of genocide has meant that “when the perceived lesser horrors occur, there is no reaction, and when it gets to genocide it is too late.”
> Take the Rohingyas. They had been persecuted and murdered for decades, yet nobody acted. The determination of genocide eventually came over a year after the mass exodus. So much for “prevention”.
> Indeed, because the 1948 convention obliges countries to act on a genocide, it often discourages them from such a designation. During the Rwandan genocide, an American official memorably warned against calling for international investigations, because a genocide finding would commit his government “to actually ‘do something’”.

Just spoke w/@BBC to provide more geologic context for the #tsunami following today's Krakatoa/Anak Krakatau #volcano eruption. Say thanks to @realdonaldtrump for cutting off the @USGS data we should have for this. https://www.forbes.com/sites/robinandrews/2018/12/22/indonesias-krakatoa-just-made-a-deadly-tsunami-heres-everything-you-need-to-know/#294547ae4c3e

@TimStone HMM
Every time the Fed raises rates, Trump’s payments on some $340 million in variable-rate loans go up https://bloom.bg/2CuMfUs

@TimStone and he throws a fit and wants to fire the people in charge of the reserve bank because "i want america to have good economy which means low rates. if they can't keep rates down then they're fired!"

National Christmas Tree closed, lights off, as part of the federal government shutdown, disappointing locals and visitors in town for the holiday. https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/politics/Federal-Government-Shutdown-Begins-Trump-Lawmakers-Fail-Deal-Wall-503378981.html?akmobile=o
Oh right, I forgot they had to turn it off, lol
Court: The fact that police said they might have to shoot someone's dogs if they got a warrant to search her house didn't make her consent involuntary, because it "would be legal" for the police to shoot the dogs if they had to during a search.
🤔
Really not following the logic that says that she "voluntarily" let them in for the safety of her dogs but police would have had to otherwise break down the door to execute a search warrant because oh my god there was so much risk
BREAKING: Netanyahu: Turkish President Erdogan is a crazy, antisemitic dictator with an obsession about Israel
Ahhh that's the good stuff (The US pulling out of Syria gives Israel less cover to go bomb stuff as it pleases)

Breaking - our David Martin reports that @realDonaldTrump will order SecDef Mattis to leave his Pentagon post immediately rather than work through the February 28 date he cited in his resignation letter. Deputy Patrick Shanahan to step into role. SAO confirmed.
Just an amazingly dumb, petty man
Marines in Afghanistan ask the USMC commandant what the drawdown means for them: “the honest answer is I have no idea,” he told them. Navy secretary on drawdown orders and guidance from the White House: “Nothing formal, just tweets.” via @bkesling https://www.wsj.com/articles/marines-deployed-abroad-seek-answers-amid-washingtons-turmoil-11545573601
@TimStone And he just tweeted it 🤷‍♂️

> One aide said that though Mr. Trump already had the resignation letter when he praised Mr. Mattis, he did not understand just how forceful a rejection of his strategy Mr. Mattis had issued.

That classic mistake, not actually reading anything

Mulvaney acknowledged today that DHS can’t force Mexico to pay for the wall. “Technically, you and I both know that it cannot work exactly like that,” he told ABC. “We have to get it from the Treasury.” https://t.co/l7kLR39NsQ
Maybe trump needs to tell his supporters that

@GodEmperorDune wtf?
@GodEmperorDune I mean maybe Mulvaney needs to tell Trump first though

@TimStone and get fired from all 400 jobs?

Fair, but until Trump actually knows, which he absolutely doesn't, he can't tell his supporters :P

Police tell BBC News they “cannot discount the possibility that there may have been no drone at all”. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-46665615
……I see
Though they did supposedly find a downed drone somewhere "close to" the airport

@TimStone droney boi +1 million

Mulvaney: It's "very possible" government shutdown will last beyond the 28th, go into new Congress http://hill.cm/in93kMy
Ah well I'm sure that'll play out well for them then

Extremely Functional country we have
We signed two pieces of major legislation this week, Criminal Justice Reform and the Farm Bill. These are two Big Deals, but all the Fake News Media wants to talk about is “the mistake” of bringing our young people back home from the Never Ending Wars. It all began 19 years ago!
1. We call them the Forever War, thank you

For the record I think not providing art for gay weddings is dumb BUT isn't this a bit like going to a Halal butcher and demanding they serve you bacon..?
Why are they being fined/threatened. I'm sure there are same sex friendly wedding services everywhere in 2018
> Creative professionals should be free to create art consistent with their convictions without the threat of government punishment. Instead, the government must protect the freedom of artists to choose which messages to express through their own creations.
That

@BunsGlazing Comparing bacon to same sex marriage is honestly really insulting
These people are just discriminating against the same sex couple, and are nothing more than bigots.
Imagine if they refused to paint an interracial couple. How'd you feel then?
Or what if it was a restaurant, or they refused to serve them since they were a same sex couple.

11:12 PM
@Wipqozn tbf the example of a halal butcher is a little more nuanced than that, though it's worth noting that the clients wouldn't have necessarily known about the beliefs of the workers up front here in the same way they would in that circumstance
The bigger issue here though is that there's no issue! The ADF is extremely anti-LGBTQ and is filing this lawsuit on this shop's behalf pre-emptively
So like, there was never a circumstance in which this posed a problem for them, they're just suing ahead of time

@TimStone More nuanced maybe, but they're not even comparable situations.

really enjoyed this anecdote from Myles Horton about how he psyched out a gang of hired thugs sent to kill him for organising textile workers

I cannot believe that we as a country would convince ourselves of a problem that doesn’t really exist and then take wildly disproportionate and damaging action on a completely false prospectus. https://twitter.com/tompugh212/status/1076874388761440260
