@Unionhawk sad but true
@Unionhawk hell yeah

2:24 AM
Trump gives himself an A-plus on presidency: "Can I go higher than that?" http://hill.cm/KSZs5Fk
yes, S. however just like your A+ it's worth less than the toilet paper you have it written on. you can't self evaluate, that has to be done by neutral third party which you don't know anyone who can fit that

@Memor-X well, he was asked to rate himself.

2:47 AM
@WELZ and the answer was obvious before it was ever said
this is the guy who thinks loosing the house is a Complete Victory
but then again, when asked that question could anyone give a truly honest answer?
still, i feel as if he would have said this at some point without even being asked
Macron, Merkel call for strong Europe to prevent global 'chaos' https://bit.ly/2PAB5WD
it would be nice if we could rely on the EU

@Memor-X S for turning the US into a shithole country

3:17 AM
Trump says he won't try to change Constitution so he can run for a third term http://hill.cm/9AH8RIs
at least something i can agree with him on
but......
> Trump, 72, has already filed paperwork and indicated he plans to run for a second term in 2020.
not looking forward to the news in 2020 now

1 hour later…
4:24 AM
A bill in the Ohio House would criminalize abortions in all cases, and possibly allow the death penalty against women who get abortions. https://wosu.pm/2ON9VWU
@uni wot is this

@GodEmperorDune please let this fail, and then burn the paper it was written on.....and burn the printer and office too for good measure

5:07 AM
May: Change of leadership risks delaying Brexit https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20181119_06/
or risks having no exit strategy and the EU will just go "nope"
and may could secure her position for a little while, all she needs to do is play back that phone call she made to Trump after the Midterms
> *inaudible Trump ranting*
May: this is what i got when i tried to congratulate him on his victory in the midterms. remember that by replacing me includes dealing with this shit, not just Brexit
and then every Boris Johnson puts his hand down

5:47 AM
Trump blasts 'little Adam Schitt' on Twitter https://politi.co/2QOzBEy
wow unoriginal nckname
trump is losing his touch
(my congressman's name is adam schiff)

@GodEmperorDune that assuming he had a touch to begin with
> Mia Love, showed me no love

@Memor-X lyin ted cruz, low energy jeb

Nissan moving to fire Ghosn for financial misconduct https://reut.rs/2DLAZ82

1:30 PM
I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn arrested over 'misconduct' - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-46259420

1 hour later…
2:53 PM
@Wipqozn Quite literally the message right above yours.

No no, Tim linked to reut.rs, not the bbc
Also the headlines have been changed from "Moving to fire" to "has been arrested"

3:17 PM
@GodEmperorDune yeah
I'm sure outgoing Governor K and Justice K are on ut
As in they'll declare this shit legal

@Memor-X People with some sense: "That sounds okay."

Heartbeat just went through the house achieving roughly the same effect

I agree with some parts and not others.
I frankly think that Abrams did a good job of distinguishing between acknowledging that Kemp will be declared the Governor, and maintaining that Kemp's tactics were grossly and blatantly unfair; not to mention an abuse of power of his position
To say that because she refuses to use the phrase "concession" or something that she is engaging in dangerous language is kind of stupid

3:39 PM
Slate: why Democrats should not acknowledge that the right wing rigged all elections in their favor around 2010, 2014

4:01 PM
@BradC while I agree that pointing to “voter suppression” instead of “stolen election” is more accurate, the piece feels a bit tone policey. And puts the blame on dems for mentioning it rather than the republicans for actually engaging in it

@Yuuki Related but different story. one is him being arrested, one is him being fired.
oh looks like the reuters story has been updated since I posted mine

but ✨decorum✨

@GodEmperorDune Exactly! Also, it assumes that Democrats exercising restraint in their use of language now will, what, prevent the Republicans from lying about their election losses (now and in 2020)?!
That's already proven false. Trump lied (and still lies) regularly about 2016 and 2018
Using highly incindiary language
Clearly, Democrats have the truth on our side, and Trump does not
But I don't think that calling Kemp (now and forever) a malicious, mustache-twirling old-school election-stealing power-abusing fck-face is much (if any) hyperbole
Just because he (claims to have) used legal means within his power as GA secretary of state to do so doesn't make it ok.

@BradC yeah it’s not dehumanizing to call the guy out for doing incredibly shitty things while overseeing his own election

And frankly, I'm highly suspicious of anything he says.
Hoping that the democrat wins the runoff for his old position, and opens investigations on Kemp's behavior
We already know he did all kinds of shady shit in 2016, then wiped the servers so they couldn't be investigated

4:10 PM
@BradC really what needs to happen is all these things that are legal but shady should be made illegal going forward. I.e can’t oversee your own election, bring back preclearance...

@GodEmperorDune Yep. "Why is this even legal"
@GodEmperorDune Preclearance for all states

4:40 PM
@BradC yep

4:52 PM
@GodEmperorDune Although that's putting trust in Trumps Justice department to actually do their job...

Global News: Toronto police to update investigation into assault allegations at St. Michael’s College.
https://globalnews.ca/news/4676552/toronto-police-assault-allegations-st-michaels-college/
> The school administration released Friday a timeline of events showing that police were not notified of the alleged sexual assault incident until two days after it learned about it.
> Reeves said that in hindsight, he may have chosen to share the video of the locker room assault with police the same evening that he got it.

> "As you know, there’s no playbook for something as serious as this. So, in hindsight, I may review that and consider whether that was a good decision or not,” Reeves said.
Here's a crazy thought, maybe you should just report this to the police right away. Only legit reason I can see for a delay is you wanted time to consult with the victim first to just be like 'how do you want us to handle this?'

Not sure why you need a playbook for "report crimes".
Although expecting the police to handle sexual assault in any competent way is also lols, I suppose.

@Yuuki well they've turned around with charges fairly quickly so that's a good start at least

5:10 PM
Gosh darn it
Let's try this again
Man found guilty in sexsomnia case
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/brockville-sexsomnia-decision-1.4910029?webview=true&appname=news-android-app
> A Brockville, Ont., judge has ruled a man is criminally responsible for the sexual assault of a woman despite claiming he has a sleep disorder.
> Ryan Hartman, 38, was found guilty of sexual assault in 2012 and sentenced to 14 months in jail. He appealed and lost.
14 months, ugh

"Sexsomnia" sounds a lot like "affluenza".

Although I can't find any details if he's been in jail awaiting a verdict, which would explain it only being 14 months... But I suspect that's not the case

I mean sleepwalking is a helluva thing, people will get in their cars and drive while asleep
And TIL that sexsomnia is in the latest DSM so it’s a legit disorder
The consent issues around this are a mess so I have no idea
At the very least, dude should have to get treatment

@GodEmperorDune IIRC, it's usually more like someone seems awake enough to have sex but not so much that they'd assault someone. But I suppose that line can get pretty fuzzy.
And the question of consent is usually whether the sleepwalking person has consented.

5:26 PM
@GodEmperorDune Yeah definitely, but the judge believed it was a drunken black out not sexsomnia
> In her ruling Monday, the judge said it was far more likely Hartman was experiencing an alcoholic blackout rather than being asleep.

Not so much whether the person being assaulted consented.

Which I suppose could be another can of worms all its own

Yeah, that's no more okay than someone with a mental disorder attacking someone in public

@Yuuki yeah this is fuct

If they're not safe to be around other people, they're not safe to be around other people

5:27 PM
> Deep sleep as a criminal defence has only been used 13 times in Canada in sexual assault cases, said Blair Crew, a University of Ottawa professor who teaches sexual assault law.

> He said that since a precedent-setting case in Toronto in 2003, sexsomnia has resulted in a ruling of not criminally responsible five times.
@SaintWacko innocent due to mental illness is a defense though

@Wipqozn Even if they knew they had this mental illness and didn't take steps to mitigate the danger?

Innocence due to mental illness usually comes with mandatory mental health rehabilitation, right?
And if they don't attend, then they get further charges or a possible re-trial?

@Yuuki oh definitely
I think anyways
@SaintWacko Yeah but what if they didn't know it because of they took steps but it still happened et cetera
It's not a clear cut situation
In any case that is, not just sexual assault cases

5:43 PM
NC anti-vaxxers trigger worst chickenpox outbreak in the state in two decades. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2018/11/19/anti-vaccination-stronghold-nc-hit-with-states-worst-chickenpox-outbreak-decades/?utm_term=.b1ea32d006ed&wpisrc=nl_most&wpmm=1

@GodEmperorDune woooo
3 cheers for negative progress
Can we charge the leaders of these movements? Because seriously, it's fucked

5:56 PM
And the parents? They're endangering the lives of their own children and those around them

Anti-vaxx is a horrible idea and movement, but isn't chickenpox mostly benign (outside of a serious case of itching) in children? Although I suppose the children with chickenpox could endanger older people who've never had it or the vaccine.
And IIRC, chickenpox has a much higher mortality rate when you're older.

@murgatroid99 There was a case on that in Canada recently actually
Oh looks like there's been developments in that since they were found guilty
> The former Alberta couple accused of failing to seek medical help for their dying toddler are considering ditching the jury for their re-trial, which will take place sometime next year.

@Yuuki My understanding is that if you have chickenpox or the vaccine as a kid, you are immunized from the more serious disease as an adult. So, if you don't get the vaccine, you're basically hoping that the kid gets to suffer through chickenpox to not endanger their life later.

> Defence lawyer, Karen Molle, had argued that due to the significant "polarization of evidence" and "overabundance of medical evidence," the trial judge's instructions to jurors did not give them the tools they needed to properly decide the case.
What does "overabundance of medical evidence" even mean
I need to look deeper, but I also don't want to
"THERE'S TOO MUCH SCIENCE"

> Chickenpox is serious, warns the CDC, “even life-threatening, especially in babies, adolescents, adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.”

6:17 PM
@TimStone Hahaha very well played.

6:30 PM
@Yuuki Yeah, though usually not as a result of the chickenpox virus itself but instead higher risk of secondary infections like pneumonia. It seems this is believed to be due to differences in how the immune system responds when you're young versus an adult, but it's inconclusive 🤷
Getting the vaccine is better anyway since I think there's less chance of the virus going dormant in your nervous system, which is what causes people to sometimes get shingles later on in life

@Wipqozn Thanks for sharing the good dog story.

6:47 PM
@puzzlepiece87 In dark times like these good dog stories are what we all need

7:03 PM
Anti-Pelosi faction finally releases letter saying these Dems are “committed to voting for new leadership.” It is signed by 16 members, including Utah Democrat Ben McAdams whose race has not been called. Marcia Fudge’s signature is not on the letter
lolololol
"We promised to bring change to Washington" "Meaningful change?" "Oh heavens no, our position is purely change for change's sake"

My man Brindisi there needs to figure out how to get his name all on the line
lol

@TimStone He needs to graduate first-grade English, isn't that when they force you to learn cursive?

I'm just surprised a lawyer has a signature like htat
It looks like what you would write if you were trying to forge a signature and were also very bad at it

Also reminds me of that John Mulaney bit.

7:09 PM
I am impressed by Joe Cunningham's ability to just like...do a series of disconnected dots as part of his signature

That seems highly impractical
@Yuuki lol yes

7:51 PM
But, really, it's like another era here. In 1978, an IRS audit revealed that the federal government actually owed *Carter* money back. Carter's response was to try to give the IRS an addition $6,000 just to set an example, but even that ran into problems.
Heh, I didn't know that, amazing

8:21 PM
@TimStone just wow
huge difference these days
although i could see a large adult son getting drunk and then peeing on a tarmac
probably eric, because he was asserting dominance over the airport or somesuch

On a semi-related note it remains confounding to me that despite literally everything else Trump doesn't let Jr. just take an axe to one of the turkeys instead of pardoning them
We'll eschew every other norm before the year is through but somehow the dumbest tradition remains intact
Well that was oddly timely

8:54 PM
> Vote now on President Trump's National Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon!
- Ivanka Trump
- Jared Kushner
- Donald Trump Jr.

9:18 PM
@TimStone would he sit awkwardly on the bloody stump afterwards?
@TimStone kinda rude to have supporters vote on which turkey is going to die instead of pardoning both

Some good follow up articles to the "how exactly should we view/describe the despicable tactics used by Kemp to defeat Stacey Abrams in Georgia" discussion we mentioned this morning:
And in fact, when I read her quotes (rather than someone else's summary of them), I agree even stronger:
> And here’s the thing, Jake. I want to be very clear. Words have meaning. And I have spent my lifetime not only as an attorney, but as a writer. And I’m very careful with the words I choose.
> And, yes, when he takes the oath of office, he will be the legal governor of the state of Georgia. He is the legal victor.
> But what you are looking for me to say is that there was no compromise of our democracy, and that there should be some political compromise in the language I use. And that’s not right.
> What’s not right is saying that something was done properly, when it was not. I will never deny the legal — the legal imprimatur that says that he is in this position. And I pray for his success.
> But will I say that this election was not tainted, was not a disinvestment and a disenfranchisement of thousands of voters? I will not say that. . .
> I mean, holy hell. Because Kemp used the power of the office he held to help himself gain the office to which he was aspiring, this means that he could not be said to have "stolen" the election, even as a shorthand designation for his clearly corrupt conduct?
> Much of the most loyal portions of the Democratic Party's political base already believe from their own experience, and not because of anything Sherrod Brown and Stacey Abrams have said, that their elections are being stolen out from under them. It's up to the opposition to speak for those whose right to choose their own leaders was, yes, stolen from them through bureaucratic legerdemain and malfeasance in office.
More quotables from the WP article above:
> Third, the distinction between “legal” and “legitimate” is a tricky one, but here is the difference: There is legal legitimacy (what Abrams said amounted to getting more votes), and then there is moral legitimacy. If you take active measures to disenfranchise voters you think will vote against you (without a shred of evidence of voter fraud to justify your actions), you’re not in a good position to argue you have the latter.
> Moral legitimacy in a democracy comes from free and fair elections. American elections are distinguishable from phony elections that dictators run because, among other things, the outcome in American elections is not determined in advance and the popular will is respected.
> To the extent the Brian Kemps (or the Russians) put their fingers on the scale, the winner does risk a loss of moral legitimacy. You cannot systematically disenfranchise thousands of voters and claim your win is without taint.

9:46 PM
lol Tom Cotton and Mike Lee are arguing about criminal justice reform on Twitter because Cotton is a sociopath who wants to lock everyone up forever

10:00 PM
@TimStone i am so upset that tom cotton doesn't look like cotton from king of the hill

@GodEmperorDune I mean, being able to choose which turkey dies seems like a microcosm of the desires of his base.

@Yuuki yeah, its just gross

And I doubt that the turkey pardoned isn't just going to be plated up later regardless.
These turkeys are bred specifically to be eaten and it's not going to have much of a life given all the health problems that come with being bred for becoming dinner rather than living.

@Yuuki previous ones would go live at a turkey rescue farm where they were not killed for food

1. move Columbus Day to the same day as the elections

11:17 PM
@puzzlepiece87 more like yay-oc imo

11:41 PM
I mean they pardon both Turkeys they just pick which one they do it in public with and save the other Turkey as backup
But I assume they are both delicious, yes

it's on the tip of my tongue

OK, this is RICO, yes, but it's CRIMINAL RICO. Based on being members of an actual criminal street gang. Also: I can't believe someone called "Mel Murda" is in trouble. https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/recording-artist-and-performer-tekashi-6ix-9ine-and-five-other-members-and-associates
