I wrote about Kavanaugh’s yearbook. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/09/brett-kavanaugh-allegations-yearbook-male-bonding.html
I didn't see that in here yet, right?

@TimStone oh yeah, i've been retweeting it all day but forgot to bring it here
fantastic piece
@TimStone given my feelings on salesforce, yep

White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah departing White House, per Yahoo https://www.yahoo.com/news/deputy-press-secretary-raj-shah-plans-leave-white-house-kavanaugh-confirmation-214250487.html
I'm old enough to remember when he denied he would be leaving back in June
He's hoping to wait until after the confirmation of Kavanaugh though. Would be a real shame if uhhh that just didn't happen
Brett Kavanaugh's drinking habits, in his own words. http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-kavanaugh-drinking-20180925-story.html
I've never seen anyone pull "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" with this regularity

@TimStone they're voting friday

No, no, they're only maybe voting Friday! (is their excuse)
But I'm also not 100% sure they have the votes based on McConnell's rhetoric

@TimStone the "drinking age was 18" thing was debunked, it was raised to 21 in his state when he was 17

They have the votes

They probably do but I'm not sure he can guarantee it

12:28 AM
I can guarantee it

🙄
Just because they're all shitty people doesn't mean he feels confident

he wants this stuff done before more comes out

And if they don't they'll just find some other federalist society immortal demon to nominate

Yes, that's true

@TimStone also there was something along these lines in one of his emails while he was in the white house
"don't tell the wives what we did on that trip yesterday, lol"

12:31 AM
Yeah, he claims it's about his planned date with his later-to-be wife
Which is by far the most bullshit excuse I've ever heard
Like what

@TimStone wasn't this at least rumored to always be the case

I mean that's not surprising but also that selection of photo has burned its way into my brain

Like a lot of details of The Beast are classified, but that one has been a rumor

12:36 AM
@Unionhawk Probably but I don't think anyone anticipated the president's blood would be platelets mixed into a Diet Coke slurry
I mean it makes sense, if the President is shot or whatever that's likely where they end up first on the way to a hospital

Are we talking like a mini fridge or an industrial size fridge?
So, uh on Kavanaugh, Tucker Carlson just played a scene from The Crucible, introducing it as "a selection of the charges" from the women who have come forward and.....I don't even know. Just watch https://t.co/JZDXccpxk3
Cucker, please

@Unionhawk A very useful cause for Steyer to dump $5 million into, naturally

2:11 PM
@Unionhawk The laws I hear about from certain American cities meant to target the homeless is just completely appalling
I honestly don't even understand how there could be people just so absolutely heartless that they'd pass laws whose purpose is to make being homeless illegal
Didn't Florida once have a law which made sleeping outside on public property illegal?

I don't even know wtf a vehicle personal property tax is but it's sure as hell not something you should pull people over for 🤷🏼‍♂️

@GodEmperorDune Good deal bruh Trump is great about keeping promises everyone says so. (Not sure I believe this report)

@GodEmperorDune Wow, yeah, that's what we need right now

@TimStone Ugh exactly more police stops is a terrible terrible idea.
You know what offsets regained personal property tax revenue? Wrongful death settlements!
Okay, we've had a lot of disgusting news already this morning, let's make take a break for some funny news about a city shooting itself in the foot instead.

@puzzlepiece87 Pretty sure there's a daily article about Florida Man literally shooting himself in the foot.

Deleted because I just looked up the story I referenced and it was more "horrifying attack on homeless person" than "hahaha funny zombies".
Everything sucks, you all. It's official. Can't even laugh about bath salt zombies anymore.
Thank you Venice for your service.

@puzzlepiece87 From the story I recall, bath salts dude literally ate someone's face.

Yes, I didn't realize it was so bad.
I thought it was "haha dude is acting but not aware and trying to eat people and at most someone got a bite on the arm"
But really it was "random guy assaults the **** out of a homeless person"

> Visitors are instructed not to swim in canals, make picnic stops out of public areas, pause too long on bridges, drop litter, ride or wheel bikes, stand or lie on benches, busk or make art without a permit, attach “love locks” to monuments and bridges, climb on trees, buildings and monuments, get changed in public, feed birds or sightsee topless or in swimwear. Making too much noise, whether at night or during siesta time (1-3pm), is also forbidden.
I'm not sure what it means to "wheel" a bike

@Wipqozn Where you push it while walking beside it.
@Wipqozn Some of this is obviously reasonable - no littering. Others are stranger - benches are expressly made for sitting or laying (?).

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 they say standing or lying, so I am assuming sitting only

It seems similar to me to places like San Francisco, Venice Beach, etc. that refuse to build more housing to protect the property values of people who already live there. It seems like another form of NIMBY to me.
@Ash No, they had already covered sitting by the time you get to that paragraph.

user15026
Ah, okay

You could argue it's only in certain locations, and to keep traffic moving or something, but they expressly say it's because there's too many tourists.
Also, to be fair, the fine for sitting hasn't been approved yet, it's just up for vote.
I was just having a good time laughing at this story tbh since things are daaaaark.

3:36 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Well there's no argue, that's exactly what it is
> Visitors to Venice could be fined up to €500 (£440) for sitting in undesignated spots, after the mayor suggested a new ban as part of wider efforts to crack down on undesirable tourist behaviour.
500 euros is definitely excessive, but depending on what's considered an undesignted spot I can understand it
It sounds like the problem is just there's a lot of tourists who are just assholes
It makes me think of this nova scotia story from last year: cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/…
> "It's just been an exponential increase of hikers and there's been garbage, lots of litter, dog poop, and it's just getting out of control here," she said.
> "If they fall and hurt themselves, I'm liable. And I can go and yell at them and say, 'This is private property,' and they look at me and basically give me the finger," he said.
Some people just have absolutely no respect for other people or their property (public or otherwise) and are just complete dicks, so if that's what's going on in Venice I certainly aren't going to fault them for taking action. I'll certainly fault them for being excessive harsh in their reaction (which a 500 euro fine is), but it's definitely understandable.

What you're saying is true, but I mean also at the same time, when you have a lot of people visiting you earn money, and you can reinvest some of it in dealing with the wear, litter, etc.
Having a lot of people eager to see a great place is not fundamentally a bad thing. But yes, behavioral management is important.
I'm much more supportive of tourist restrictions for places mentioned like the Galapagos where too many people will destroy it just by walking around - literally unpreventable.
But I mean, if it's a city, come on.
Besides, Venice is going to be underwater anyway, might as well enjoy it while it's still around.
If people have to wait for hours to get into the Eiffel Tower, seems fine to me, etc.

3:52 PM
@puzzlepiece87 Have an HD drone do a fly-through and construct a nice virtual tour.

@puzzlepiece87 Sure, but that doesn't mean people should get a free pass on being an asshole. If I buy something from a shop that doesn't mean I can then toss some garbage on their floor.

@Wipqozn Technically speaking, they didn't get a free pass. What are plane tickets to Venice going for right now?

@Wipqozn Yup true. I'm just opposed to behavioral management in the form of "no sitting in popular place". That makes it incompatible for folks with fitness or disability issues that need to be able to sit, especially if they've been in line.
But I agree behavioral management is very important.

@puzzlepiece87 The point about disability is fair, but again, we really don't know what's considered an 'undesignted spot'.

Littering fines are great especially if enforced, in my opinion.

3:57 PM
It seems your funny story didn't work so well as a mood lightener, so here's a gif of a seal slapping someone with an octopus.

@Wipqozn Yup, they said it's like 5-6 of the popular attractions.
They listed them, if not in that story then in others.
@Yuuki Thank you :D

@puzzlepiece87 I don't remember seeing that, so it's either a different story or I missed it.

Oops, may have misremembered. From the linked story:
> Sitting in certain parts of Venice, such as St Mark’s Square and on the steps of Rialto Bridge, is already prohibited, but the new proposal would take things a step further.
Different story, current list:
> Sitting is banned in the following places: “in St. Mark’s Square and in Piazzetta dei Leoncini, beneath the arcades and on the steps of the Procuratie Nuove, the Napoleonic Wing, the Sansovino Library, beneath the arcades of the Ducal Palace, in the impressive entranceway to St. Mark’s Square otherwise known as Piazzetta San Marco and its jetty.” (€200)
New proposal:
> a new proposal from mayor Luigi Brugnaro to ban sitting on the ground throughout the city, with offenders facing fines between €50 and €500. The rule will be voted on in October.
@Ash you were right
You can sit on benches
I misunderstood
This is definitely sounding much more reasonable.
No sitting on the ground (okay), no sitting in entryways or transportation bottlenecks like bridges (okay), no lying or camping on bridges (anti-homeless, not okay but typical)
Not as funny but more reassuring.
Thank goodness we still have Yuuki's humor.

@puzzlepiece87 Oh man, a minimum of 50 euros just because your child got petulant.

I wonder how many fines they actually give out already

4:12 PM
*Oops, that should be no lying or camping on benches, I brainfarted that third item.

Uh... maybe "ram" isn't the most appropriate word choice here, but yeah.

@Yuuki I think it's a fantastic word choice for this situation lol

7:36 PM
@Yuuki i dunno why the Violence Against Women Act was set up to expire in the first place
was it like "violence against women is bad, but only for the next X years"?

user15026
I assume it was a funding thing

Yeah, that's my assumption too.
The Act included a lot of grant programs.

It is definitely a funding bill
> The Act provided $1.6 billion toward investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women, imposed automatic and mandatory restitution on those convicted, and allowed civil redress in cases prosecutors chose to leave un-prosecuted. The Act also established the Office on Violence Against Women within the Department of Justice.

user15026
Like from Wikipedia it sounds like it was in charge of providing certain services and stuff, so I suspect a lot of it is "hey do we still want to give money to this stuff"

Yeah it's often funding when stuff like this is cut

I'm not even positive what the implication was supposed to be honestly
In other news, former Republican Virginia Senator John Warner has crossed party lines and endorsed Democratic Virginia Senator Tim Kaine for re-election.
lol, I mean

@TimStone I mean, at this point, I'm not sure you can consider "former Republican" as crossing party lines.

It's not like Kaine is so far to the left either, and Corey Stewart is straight trash and losing anyway so 🤷🏼‍♂️
.@TulsiGabbard just told the House Armed Services Committee that there are "20,000-30,000 Al-Qaeda terrorists in control of the city of #Idlib.” And that the U.S. currently acts as “the protector of Al-Qaeda." Errr, nope. On all accounts.

@TimStone i was sad she didn't get primaried
it's just so weird how much she is into pro russian conspiracy theories

Just a few months ago, wasn't she holding the "totally young Bernie Sanders" title belt?
I think Ocasio-Cortez has it now.
Kamala Harris also had it for awhile there.

@Yuuki i don't think she ever held that
she was deep into repeating weird talking points during the obama admin before bernie announced he was running

I definitely remember her being mentioned a lot after Bernie lost the primary though.
Or after Trump won the election.
One of those two.

lol the white house has released a new list of kavanaugh defenders, because the previous list worked so well
and trump is off the rails on another press conference about how sexual assault is no big deal
goddamn

9:25 PM
@GodEmperorDune I can't stand to actually watch that stuff, but from what I've read second hand of it, it started crazy and is getting off the rails now

I feel like at this point, Trump staying on point is actually what "off the rails" would be.
For him, at least.

now instead of talking about the kavanaugh accusations, trump is talking about how he personally was accused of assault
and trashing all the people who accused him, naturally

It's not a Trump appearance if he doesn't eventually arrive back at himself.
And himself winning the electoral college.
I'm just imagining if he's ever held in North Korea. "Just mention your electoral college victory if they're torturing you."

I watched like 30 seconds of it just now, but I just can't take it. Not sure if I could ever drink enough to be able to get through a whole press conference

I just want to get this quote down so I don't forget. @realDonaldTrump said: "There was no obstruction. I mean I fight back and when I fight back I really fight back so if you want to call that obstruction... but there was no obstruction."

@GodEmperorDune calipers are also used to measure a lot of other stuff

@MadScientist true, it is a basically a more accurate ruler

And plenty of non-slavery related things.

user15026
9:46 PM
@GodEmperorDune yeah, that's what I was going for

user15026
@MadScientist yes, but he nailed what I was referencing

user15026
@MadScientist I dunno, you just gotta open their head

@Yuuki yep, it is a standard industrial tool now and they are quite fancy and accurate

user15026
(mind you I might be more blase about head-opening as mine has been opened a number of times)

the old ones look like curly braces

user15026
9:47 PM
you don't necessarily have to take it out to measure it

@Ash I suppose that explains why you're so open-minded.

user15026
@Yuuki giggles

@Yuuki HUE
that would be starworthy in bridge

user15026
(there are technically two more holes in my skull than there ought to be)

user15026
(and one weird depression dent from where the hole fused from when I was a baby and they moved the first shunt)

9:49 PM
@MadScientist CT scan?

user15026
(MY HEAD IS WEIRD, sorry)

iirc, if your brain is too large that causes health problems, not supernatural intelligence

user15026
@murgatroid99 CT would likely work yeah

@Ash nah it is a badass patchwork quilt of BONE

user15026
@GodEmperorDune yeah, it would, like microcephaly also does

user15026
9:50 PM
(The science word is macrocephaly)

user15026
@GodEmperorDune This is true, it is. With funny little holes in. :P

@murgatroid99 yeah, probably. The whole subject does lead me down paths that are far outside "Be Nice" though

Trump: "Yes, please, Mr. Kurd" [referring to ethnicity of the questioner]
Ah. Well.

@Ash ahhhh, i was thinking of the swelling thing where they need to open holes to vent pressure but this is more accurate
@TimStone see he's not misogynistic, he's disrespectful of male reporters too
BREAKING: US President Donald Trump says he rejected a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, says Canada doesn't want to move in NAFTA talks, and that he doesn't "like their representative very much" (aka Chrystia Freeland)

I mean, we can get super detailed brain images using X-ray-based CT head scans. It should be possible to measure the overall size with a high degree of precision.

9:53 PM
from what i've heard, Chrystia Freeland is actually a very nice person so i dunno wtf this is
(actually i know exactly what it is, curious how he doesn't like women in positions of power that disagree with him)

user15026
@GodEmperorDune oh, yeah, that's not good either

"They weren't laughing at me, they were laughing with me." - Trump on @UN laughing at him
clearly they were saying "booo-urns"

Trump-urns, part 2.
Depending on how it's ruled, it's possible that presidential pardons would also prevent state prosecution.

10:10 PM
Well, for the same crimes at least
e.g. in Michael Cohen's case there are a lot of state charges that wouldn't directly correspond to federal charges so he'd still be screwed
The president fielded a question from this website
👍

@TimStone dat photoshop

@GodEmperorDune takes another politics hit
New: Trudeau spokesperson suggests Trump was lying when he said he turned down a meeting with Trudeau. "No meeting was requested," Cameron Ahmad says.

user15026
Okay, not all of this is news, though, really?

Which part?

@TimStone not surprising

user15026
10:16 PM
shrug never mind, I don't feel like playing another round of "what is news", it just feels like not every tweet that tangentially relates to Trump is opening his mouth again needs to show up here

Erm, alright. He's just in the middle of giving an insane press conference, so I don't know what the line is meant to be :/
Trump seems afraid that if Kavanaugh not confirmed, people won't want the job
(based on some of his comments) I wonder if it's that or if he views it purely as an attack on him, or if it's both?
It's rather nonsensical, obviously anyone nominated would want to become a Supreme Court Justice

@TimStone clearly he sympathizes with other accused sexual assaulters and is annoyed that accusations are preventing him form doing whatever he wants

Barring anyone with a particularly checkered past I assume most other people would expect the Gorsuch treatment

yeah this entire thing has obfuscated the fact that kavanaugh likely signed off on war crimes while in the bush white house

10:32 PM
@TimStone Ah they apparently have a "Did the Israelis do 9/11?" article so that's cool
:|

@TimStone :|

He made sure to take their reporter's question before the NY Times, heh

@TimStone apparent he ranted about the failing ny times after calling on who he thought was a ny times reporter. it was a pbs reporter.

sighs
Ugh NBC teasing breaking news
Damn you reporters and your not just injecting it directly into my veins

bruh that's not how twitter works

10:39 PM
.@NBCNightlyNews reporting a fourth, anonymous Kavanaugh accuser, involving physical assaul.
@GodEmperorDune tbf I guess they're airing it during the segment so it would have involved me turning it on

@TimStone this is different than the one who was like "everything they're saying about kavanaugh happened all the time in our area but i never saw him or judge personally do anything"

Trump mentioned that Democrats wouldn’t support Washington (of first President fame) if he was nominated. I agree because Washington was a military general, not a lawyer.

BREAKING: Senate Judiciary Commitee probing new allegation of physical assault against Kavanaugh. He denies. More from the whole @NBCNews Hill team, incl @LACaldwellDC @frankthorp @mikememoli + @HeidiPrzybyla —> http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/senate-probing-new-allegation-misconduct-against-kavanaugh-n913581
Incident in 1998, starting to think maybe this dude isn't on the up and up 🤔

It’s almost as if sexual assault has the highest rate of recidivism of all crimes.

@TimStone alcohol is a helluva drug

10:49 PM
And that’s for people who are caught.

> Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, who sits on the Judiciary Committee, said Wednesday would not say whether there were any additional information she was aware of, but added, “there are certain areas that I’ve been interested in. He could be perjuring himself because of his response to my question about whether he had ever” engaged in sexual misconduct "as an adult. He could have perjured himself.”
a very real possibility is that kavanaugh did all these things but didn't consider it sexual assault or misconduct

There are arguably easier things to bring up perjury on but yeah

@TimStone also true

It seems pretty hard to dispute at this point that he had a history of aggressive drunken behaviour 🤷

It's easy to dispute anything if you just call everyone who said it a liar

10:58 PM
> Fox News Channel's new streaming service, "Fox Nation," introduced its new tagline on Wednesday, "Opinion Done Right," per an announcement by the network
lol

@GodEmperorDune ofcause if true, makes him looks like an asshole to women on par to Trump
