Granted these were exceptionally public embarrassments, so
(on top of the severity of the collisions)

I think there's probably a decent case for negligence here too
@GodEmperorDune he ate it off camera
This is canon

@Unionhawk well he cooked them, can't go wasting them now
he just couldn't eat them while the other Porg was watching
THEIR SO GOD DAM CUTE!

@Memor-X they are a mix of puffins and pugs and therefore unstoppable cuteness
also to derail the conversation back into less fun territory, here is a good thread about how you, the person who wants to still have sex while not worrying about going to jail for messing it up, can improve things (and incidentally have better sexytimes too). It starts with some metaphors in the aziz context and how it is a larger problem, but we covered that already, so right to the middle
Let me switch metaphors and share with you a theory that came to me last night. It's called Have Sex Like You're Throwing A Party. It was going to be Have Sex Like Your Grandma Throwing A Party, but I don't know your grandma.
this is also a good woke lady follow

Have an alternative activity. "If you're not sure, we could just [talk/play XBox/watch The Good Place]." And again, mean it. This is not a clever ruse to buy you time to try your whole move set over and over again until you discover her pokemon type and elemental weakness.

user15026
This this this this this (also the reference cracked me up)

user15026
Also, the bit about if you can't recognize a soft no, wait for a hard yes

user15026
augh this thread hugs it to themself and makes happiness hum sounds at it

user15026
Also wait wait wait wait wait SHE DID TALES OF MU

TIL: Skittles have different fragrances and different colors — but they all taste exactly the same. 🌈 http://n.pr/2EltReQ
Alright we need to end reality because I can't believe anything is real now

user15026
@TimStone I knew this was going to be about the way colour and scent confuse taste and it is and I love it

@TimStone objection! They may have the same flavour, but taste is influenced by both flavour and smell, so if they have different fragrances, they don't taste the same.

user15026
Like brain processing is so messed up and so easily tricked

12:39 AM
Brains are so weird.

user15026
They are and it is so cool

user15026
(The reason I know what I do about the colour/scent/taste thing is because that sort of stuff is tied into synesthesia which is a thing that fascinates me)

user15026
(in general how brains do or don't is fascnating)

user15026
(oops sorry this is a hyperfocus I will back away before I overload)

@Ash Which is, in a way, terrifying :P

12:41 AM
@Ash totally saving that thread for next time I see someone wittering on about "but what if I unwittingly do a sex crime"

user15026
@ToxicFrog yaysauce! Although @GodEmperorDune should get full props for it

I just pulled out a bit I liked

user15026
(also I have this overwhelming urge to re-read Tales of MU from the start)

Tales of MU is not known to me

this is sorta true, well not just Skittles but anything of different colours. there was this show (i think it was *Food: Fact or Fiction*) where they did an experiment with different coloured icing on cakes. all cakes were the same and only a different colour was used for icing (Green, Brown, Red and Blue).

subject was blindfolded and asked to taste 4 pieces, each with different colours. reported they all tasted the same. subject was unblind folded and tasted same cakes, reported tastes of Mint, Chocolate, Berry and Gummy flavours

12:47 AM
@Ash what is tales of MU?

user15026
Tales of MU is a kinda over the top ridiculous serial erotica story I discovered before I knew what erotica is. It's kinda crack-y in spots, and really ridiculous, but it was good for what it was. To quote TV Tropes: "The story revolves around the life of Mackenzie "Mack" Blaise, a self-hating half-demon student at Magisterius University, a college of enchantment in an alternate universe where Dungeons & Dragons-style fantasy and magic exist in place of modern technology. "

user15026
It's NSFW, but it's reasonably good in that whole "don't think about it too hard and just enjoy it for what it is" thign

user15026
It's also hella long. Year 1 is like 496 chapters, year 2 is afaik unfinished so far at 330 something

user15026
Year one can be gotten as an ebook (which I might grab as a nice support the author thing)

o.O

12:54 AM
@Ash "Tales of MU" ooo, new Tales of Gam....*"is a kinda over the top ridiculous serial erotica story"* ok, not a Tales of Game

Looks like Eric Bolling and Greta Van Sustren both got hacked by...Turkish hackers?

"in an alternate universe where Dungeons & Dragons-style fantasy and magic exist in place of modern technology." yeh, what i would expect from TVTropes to describe a fantasy world

user15026
Let me make it clear - I am not recommending anyone read Tales of MU because it's pretty crackfic in a lot of spots and it is kinda a hot mess even for crack erotica

This hack is absolutely wild

@Ash i have no idea what crack means in that context
@Unionhawk this is in response to the US helping the Kurdish set up a border force?

1:10 AM
I have no idea probably

@Ash crack erotica meaning?

user15026
1:58 AM
Like...completely over the top ridiculous not grounded in reality?

god dammit we voted for cloture on FISA

But it's almost like

Also apparently Steve was/has been in intelligence committee for like 10 hours?

Supposedly refusing to answer questions despite a subpoena on instructions from the White House

I mean on one hand that makes sense

It's unclear what they've been doing the whole time if that's true though

On the other hand, someone in intelligence committee probably would have been like "this is a waste of time" at hour like 2 if that was the case yes

Nunes is just going to report anything he says back to Trump anyway
My working theory is that the first five hours were just him taking off his outer layers

I mean it kind of matters, Jared might go on to be an expert in many things he was definitely not an expert at otherwise

@quartata :spleen:

@nycsouthpaw On Maddow he said a lot of time was taken by Bannon counsel consulting w WH, then drafting subpoena, etc. but they did ask questions about earlier time frame, and they got WH questions on record so they could compel him via court to come back and answer.

The Australian government has filed a formal complaint with the World Trade Organisation in protest of Canada's rules over the sale of Australian wine. MORE: http://bit.ly/2mM61m5
has nobody thought that maybe Canada doesn't want Goon Bags?
for those who don't know what a Goon Bag is...
Box wine (cask wine or boxed wine) is wine packaged in a bag-in-box. Wine is contained in a plastic bladder typically with an air-tight valve emerging from a protective corrugated fiberboard box. It serves as an alternative to traditional wine bottling in glass with a cork or synthetic seal. It is sometimes called goon , goon bag or "Chateau Cardboard" in Australia. == History == The process for packaging 'cask wine' (box wine) was invented by Thomas Angove of Angove's, a winemaker from Renmark, South Australia, and patented by the company on April 20, 1935. Polyethylene bladders of 1 gallon ...
it's the bag inside that ^

user15026
We have boxed wine

@Ash i'm sure you do, but do you have people who buy the boxed wine and take out the bag and carry/drink from it

user15026
Possibly :P

i like Urban says about it
> Cheap wine that comes in a box and leaves the consumer with an extreme headache the next day. Convenient because the remains of the vessel can be inflated for use as a pillow after consumption.

@Memor-X that's the only way to do box wine

@puzzlepiece87 i dunno, some survivors on twitter have said that the specific details of how boundaries were pushed and whatnot was what made it ring true with their own experiences, plus i read the "how she was dressed" thing as heading off the "victim gave mixed signals by dressing scandalously" argument.
plus i feel that giving specific examples of "he did this and she did this in response" not only provides context for why this was messed up even though probably not criminal
and it did spark the "men need to understand consent better" arguments in some circles but like with everything else, hindsight always makes it better
and like with anything else, the hot take community is gonna make awful hot takes and that trickles to opinion writers and eventually into news stories that are little more than aggregating the various takes

BREAKING: New Californians were not informed of the plan to ditch Old California https://twitter.com/kathygori/status/953512836071809025

user15026
New California?

@Ash some rural counties are upset that even though they have most of the land, they are vastly outnumbered by democrats so democrats control most of the state government
so they are trying to secede from california to form a new state
as with most things, they have both valid and invalid points

user15026
....can they do that? I thought that wasn't a thing?

most likely not
but one of california's weirder things is that we allow anyone to put a thing on the ballot to change the state constitution, provided they get enough signatures
and it has turned into a thing for rich people to basically fund whatever they want
to get it on the ballot
there are companies that exist just to do ballot initiatives in california
anyway, rich dude on the right tried to do this thing where he carved california into 6 smaller states and it went nowhere
(fun fact, the proposal would've created both the richest and poorest US states, per capita)
(richest was silicon valley, poorest was central california which does farming and like small town service jobs)

user15026
7:02 AM
eeeergh that sounds awful

anyway, the fact that rural communities are not seeing their local needs addressed because state govt is catering to bay area or los angeles area interests is definitely a thing
some of that is that these are very wealthy areas, so politicians and potential politicians like to cozy up to them for campaign donations
part of it is also that we did term limits and it backfired tremendously
because no one can stay in an elected office for very long, so they are always trying to jump to a new position instead of doing good work in their current position
we fixed some of that and said "10 overall years in office" instead of x terms as a state senator, y terms as a state rep
also our budget has been a mess for decades, getting better but still not great
we prevented ourselves from raising property taxes since the 1970s, so that made most revenue come from income taxes, which swing wildly depending on the economy
but the weather is nice :D
oh except for the droughts and water rights which are yet another mess

@GodEmperorDune Thanks for this additional context, I appreciate it.
@Ash @GodEmperorDune There was a California independence-from-US movement that was Russian-funded, hopefully this one isn't also.

I doubt it's going to end up going anywhere but who honestly knows

3:43 PM
Also I think it's already been decided that a state can't vote to withdraw legally?

I don't think that's their plan I think their plan is to split

3:58 PM
I doubt it will go anywhere either, I just get uncomfortable knowing these things can so easily make news and/or get off the ground with Russian funding.
I wish we were a little more resilient.

4:29 PM
@KevinvanderVelden Yeah, we had a whole war about that, didn't we?

4:59 PM
@murgatroid99 The war of independence?

The Civil War

You would have thought after all that 'shit we want to leave this union lets fight a war', anyone else creating a union might think to make leaving legally impossible from the get go

@fredley coughs and points and puerto rico America isn't really big on learning from past mistakes

@KevinvanderVelden Technically, this is about creating another state not withdrawing.
But that's still a federal thing, I don't think California can do this unilaterally.
woooooooooooow

5:59 PM
@Yuuki nope. it's also not even like most of california wants this

Right, which is why it's not going to go anywhere

and from what i recall, congress needs to do legislation to add any new state and i don't think they'd go for it in the senate
it's basically meme fodder that disguises actual grievances

"You can not call me back but you cannot disrespect the companies and the trading partner that is South Carolina," he said.

6:09 PM
@GodEmperorDune Actually, precedent with West Virginia might allow one region of a state to split from another without federal legislation. But that happened during the Civil War.
Which I would consider extenuating circumstances, but whatever.

@Yuuki it seems that is what they are going for
after the "split into six mini californias" was shot down
It comes down to an attempt to gerrymander the senate

Yeah, the West Virginia split only worked because they were able to "reform" the Virginia government by declaring that delegates who had voted for succession had essentially vacated their seat

Yeah, libertarian socialists reject the state itself, as well as the concept of socialism as centralized state ownership and control of the economy

@TimStone there's also a drug that contains platinum, used for cancer as well

@Unionhawk Ah got it. To me the odds of people on their own deciding to not only construct but also maintain a socialist system are ROFL, but good for them I suppose the universe needs its optimists.
@GodEmperorDune Thanks. These help me to process, learn, practice.

There are a number of different left schools of thought under the umbrella because fucking of course there are, and I tend to agree that obtaining revolutionary social democratic reforms is way more likely than abolishing the state and forming an anarcho-syndicalist collective, but, there are definitely things under the umbrella of "the State" that can not continue to exist in their current form, prisons most obviously to me
It is important to consider though that in a democratic society, the State is exactly the same as the People
Or should be anyway
The Government (tm) shouldn't own Cincinnati Public Library, We should

7:10 PM
Somebody has uploaded a probably nation state ICS malware to VirusTotal https://www.cyberscoop.com/trisis-virus-total-schneider-electric/

@Unionhawk If you were to re-create the government based on those democratic principles, what would you change to avoid that problem of the government and its bureaucracy becoming this separate entity that people don't directly control

@murgatroid99 i would change human nature
i don't really see any other way

@murgatroid99 Personally, I don't see any good ways of avoiding the problem. IMHO, one of the roles of government (but not the only role) is to provide the goods and services that private business is not only incapable of providing, but also unwilling, which I see as being at odds with reducing and especially eliminating bureaucracy.

We're currently working specifically on the library board here, honestly. I don't have some grand vision to reshape the entirety of how everything works.
Right now iirc they're appointed by the county commissioners?
Right now I believe the current political goals of the campaign include unionizing library workers to increase their power, as well
Really what I was trying to get at was trying to reconcile the sentence "why is that the government's job it should be all of our job", which like ideally "all of us, as a society" and "the government" should be considered to be practically the same as far as I'm concerned
I'm confusing myself here now, hmm
Like, there's simultaneously a specific case in that example that feasibly could have increased democratic control, and a more general case that is more complex
In general the arrangement we have is relatively fine, though like I said the layer of abstraction allows people to come at it from "why is that The Government's job and not The Society's job"
In specific every single person on the Cincinnati Public Library Board who was responsible for considering the now cancelled sale of one of the downtown buildings to a force for gentrification for months despite constant and consistent public pressure against it, and who spent $30,000 on some PR consultants to moderate one of the public meetings, should resign

Oh, pitless avocados because people cut/stab themselves trying to dig out the pit with a knife.
@Ash I initially read the title as people literally getting stabbed with avocados.

user15026
@Yuuki yeah, no, don't use the sharp thing for digging, augh

10:36 PM
@Yuuki ahhhh

And I was confused as to why the solution was a more knife-shaped avocado.

user15026
@Yuuki This is amusing to consider

yep, all other questions have been answered with "human stupidity"

Survey finds few large companies are planning bonuses or wage hikes as a result of GOP tax plan http://hill.cm/oXE4dnw
gets out the shocked face

> Newsperson: "San Francisco has seen a rise in cases of assault with a deadly avocado."
> Scientist: "I know, I'll make an avocado that's shaped more like a knife and easily grippable!"
@TimStone I really need to find conservative-only reactions to this article.

Government of El Salvador is negotiating with Qatar to send former US #TPS-holders there to be employed as guestworkers: Would mean they'd go from having labor rights to being indentured workers under an abusive sponsorship system where employers own them. http://aje.io/9z2ar
Jesus

That's horrifying. So Trump literally (though indirectly) sent those people into slavery.

what's TPS in this context?

@MadScientist Temporary Protection......Something?

Temporary Protected Status, yeah

it's the thing people from war torn or disaster struck countries get to move to the US
from how i understand it

Correct

> The Trump administration is considering a religious freedom rule that would allow healthcare workers to refuse to treat LGBT patients.
:|

@Yuuki the gop being a being a bunch of bigots? Why I never

@Yuuki why can't they just, i don't know, ask someone else to do it?

@Memor-X Some places might not have another qualified doctor.

@Memor-X because bigotry

10:56 PM
Oh, you're talking about the healthcare worker asking someone else to do it?

@Yuuki yeh, sorry if that wasn't clear

I thought you meant "why doesn't the LGBT person find another doctor?".

Aside from Trump himself having terrible ideas, the biggest problem is that he is no barrier at all to the worst impulses from the far right of the Republicans. So you get both, spontaneous terrible ideas from Trump and all the evil stuff the right edge of the Republicans always wanted to do.
