@Wipqozn 'Very frightening' plan by developer to buy $1B in homes will price renters out: anti-poverty group cbc.ca/news/canada/london/…
> An anti-poverty group is calling a Toronto-based developer's plan to buy $1 billion worth of single-family homes and turn them into rental properties a "frightening" example of how even more people will be priced out of an increasingly expensive housing market.
> The plan, reported by the Globe and Mail on Monday, would see Core Development Group build a single-family home rental business by buying housing stock in medium-sized cities across Ontario, including London, Kingston, Hamilton, Barrie, Cambridge, Peterborough, Guelph and St. Catharines.
> Critics say the move couldn't come at a worse time. Rents and housing prices are soaring across Canada, creating a shortage of single-family homes and making housing ever less affordable.
CBC reached out to the development group, and they said they're specifically targeting areas with low supply:
> "We chose markets where there is very little new supply, but where there is a lot of demand. Low vacancies and all markets are growing on a population front, they house a variety of employers and are growing cities without roofs to accommodate that growth."
Capitalism is great. Ayn Rand is my hero.
CEO of the development group. He chose to use this extremely smug picture.

High court sides with Catholic agency in foster care dispute apnews.com/article/…
> The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the city of Philadelphia violated the Constitution by limiting its relationship with a Catholic foster care agency over the group's refusal to certify same-sex couples as foster parents.
> “The refusal of Philadelphia to contract with CSS for the provision of foster care services unless it agrees to certify same-sex couples as foster parents cannot survive strict scrutiny, and violates the First Amendment,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote.
> Philadelphia learned in 2018 from a newspaper reporter that the agency would not work with same-sex couples.

@Unionhawk Congratulations to returning champion Neal Katyal for successfully arguing that U.S. Corporations are completely allowed to use foreign slave labor in an 8-1 decision (Alito dissenting)
although reading Alito's it's essentially 9-0

if I understand Alito right he would have just rejected the "we can't be sued here because we are a corporation" argument and kicked it back to the lower court

South Carolina court halts executions until the state's new firing squad option is finalized cnn.com/2021/06/16/politics/…

yeah a lot of states are looking to continue executing people even if they can't obtain the appropriate chemicals to do so by lethal injection anymore

7:16 PM
@Unionhawk What is going on? I actually agree with Alito on something? That can't be right.

7:39 PM
yeah well congratulations to the foreign slave trade for receiving clearance to continue working with American corporations
very cool 8-1 decision

8:06 PM
@Unionhawk And what was the motivation for SCOTUS to allow slavery?

@Nzall Basically the original plaintiffs didn't have standing (this isn't technically correct, but it is conceptually correct) to bring a case under the specific act that would allow them to bring such a case.

@MBraedley so essentially, whether slavery is allowed is an open question, but the wrong people asked SCOTUS to decide, so they're choosing not to answer?
and my followup is: who HAS standing?

More that since the slavery didn't take place on American soil, an American court shouldn't be the ones to decide the case.
Even though defendants are American "people" (corporations).
The argument by the plaintiffs was that the aiding and abetting of slavery did take place on American soil, which should have given them standing.
Even though the plaintiffs themselves were never in America during the alleged slavery

QAnons Are a plague upon the earth

Stupidity gaining sentience

> Didulo has rallied her Canadian followers to real-life action. They’re in the midst of filing hundreds of “cease and desist” notices demanding businesses, governments, and police forces stop all activities related to combating the pandemic.

we should worry less about AI's enslaving us and more about AI's becoming QAnon followers

> Didulo has said that if the people who received the cease and desist orders from her followers break them, they will be executed.
That sure is a pretty blatant death threat
> QAnon, which may, according to a recent poll, have as many as 30 million followers in the U.S. as well as more outside of it, has contributed to real-world violence, including the Capitol Hill uprising.
30 million?! Wtf
That's 10% of the USA
> In a follow-up video to her initial decree, Didulo declares herself not only the “the head of state,” “commander in chief,” and “head of government,” but also the “Queen of Canada, replacing Queen Elizabeth II of England who has now been executed for crimes against humanity.”
> This was met with much jubilation from hundreds of followers: “YASSS!!! 🙏,” wrote one; “I’m so happy we have you.😘❤️,” wrote another; “she is the only one that is saying anything hopeful or anything that makes sense…. It felt completely hopeless before Romana came along,” wrote a third.
> she is the only one that is saying anything hopeful or anything that makes sense
> makes sense
