take away - Russia meddling wont change anything unless the democrats win
maybe in the past but recent citizenship changes make it far less harmonious for Muslims
tldr; citizenship changes in India now mean that everyone has to prove they are Indian decent with paperwork, if you can't you're an illegal immigrant BUT also if you are anything but Muslim, you are except from the former

@Yuuki Riot: yes we're totally innocent, see how innocent we are in doing this really shady shitty thing

@Memor-X I believe the only correct response to that is "ok boomer"
@BradC bloomberg primary as a republican, it's what you are

He promptly followed up with a text reading, "Please disregard, vote Bernie or Warren."

Well, that's not a good sign!!!
> The number of people killed by the coronavirus in Iran has risen to at least 15, the country’s health ministry said, with nearly 100 cases of the infection confirmed, including the man in charge of containing the spread of the pathogen in the country.

Huh
Well that's no good!
Clear sign that they need to get their shit together in quarantining

Easy to chalk up as just more shit-posting from the bully pulpit, but... yeah, this man is a lawless piece of crap

Tim
@Nzall Is his doctor also his chef?

Go notorious RBG!

user15026
4:32 PM
@Nzall I don't understand why this is news.

breaking news somebody did something kind of weird (also mashed cauliflower is a thing who the hell reported this oh it was the hill of course)

@Ash the lead is... clickbaity AF
But it's kinda news-worthy that the doctor of the president of the USA needs to use subterfuge to get said president to eat somewhat healthy

4:47 PM
@Unionhawk Cauliflower rice is also apparently a thing.
@BradC If anyone should be recusing themselves from Trump-related cases, it should be Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, given that they're his appointees.

user15026
@Elva shrug it feels like a weird thing to focus on

It's like the Bloomberg billboard that's like "Donald eats well done steak but I eat it medium rare"
Like cool dude but I don't remember asking

5:42 PM
@Unionhawk Speaking as someone in the private health insurance industry, lay me off with 2 years severance you cowards.

6:02 PM
Yesterday we talked a bit about how the new Roberts Supreme Court seems likely to be aggressive in its pursuit of far-right-wing agendas in the next few years. Here is a case in point, based on them granting cert to "Fulton v City of Philadelphia":

user15026
@Unionhawk It's one of those things where it feels weird that we are focusing so much on his health etc - it edges very close to that idea where villains are always the ones who weigh too much and eat horribly and/or omg look at him he's such a child he can't even eat right - honestly, it's just yet another reason to mock him and make other people feel good about themselves in comparison, which...considering all the real harm he's doing, I feel like this just serves to distract/detract

user15026
from the real harm he's doing

Yeah it's just like "oh look at this guy he eats at one of the most popular restaurants in the entire world" like ok? So do? A lot of people?

user15026
Exactly

user15026
I get that we reaaaally like mocking Trump right now, because he's being a monster in a lot of ways, but the more we go "oh hee hee look at him what a child" the more he can get away with a "well what did you expect he can't be held responsible" response

6:11 PM
Going at the literal only relatable thing about the guy is odd, imo
I get the instinct, it's a weird dissonance where we expect fancy rich guys to have fancy lunches all the time or whatever, but, idk

user15026
and with the cauliflower thing, it's like...how many of us have horrible eating habits? Why does this matter, in the grand scheme of...everything else?

user15026
(It also felt like a weird way to get attention for the fact that the former doctor dude is running for whatever, which I suspect is more the point of the thing)

That reminds me, I need to try Cauliflower wings sometime.

6:40 PM
@Ash For me, it's not as much the "look at Trump's diet" thing and more "Trump isn't taking care of himself, and he's slowly deteriorating because of it, what with him talking gibberish every other rally. And I do mean gibberish, not just that he's saying dumb stuff that doesn't have internal consistency"

user15026
6:51 PM
@Nzall We can't really judge any of that though based on this one statement about potatoes.

user15026
Like...maybe he is, maybe he isn't, but armchair doctoring/diagnosing doesn't help either - it absolves him of any personal responsibility, it demonizes the diseases that actual people have to deal with, etc.

@Ash oh right, I sometimes forget you guys aren't really keeping up with the Trumpwatchers as much

user15026
@Nzall .....

user15026
People who aren't trained to diagnose, poking at his actions like this, isn't going to do anything helpful.

user15026
Maybe he's got mental stuff that's in decline, maybe he doesn't, I don't know, I'm not his doctor, but none of the people judging his every public move are either.

6:53 PM
@Ash there are some Trumpwatchers that ARE trained in diagnosis

user15026
@Nzall You can't diagnose someone from some videos and hearsay! That is not how medical science works.

like, they're not employed to watch his health, but they have had formal training
@Ash no, you can't diagnose, but you can see warning signs that may encourage a full analysis

user15026
Again, even if they are they're not his doctor, they don't have authority, and it won't change the fact that even if they say that, they don't have the power to actually do anything with the info, or even confirm it's correctnes

Like, if your computer throws up a random warning box, you're gonna assume that something is wrong, and maybe even investigate

user15026
@Nzall well, yes, but since it is my computer, in my house, that I can touch and take apart, it's within my purview

user15026
6:55 PM
Trump is not anyone's property.

@Ash Yes, true, and if a game you play crashes, you also report it to the makers

user15026
This is honestly ridiculous, and does nothing to actually help people or deal with his actual stuff he's doing, it just gives people something to do to feel special and it ultimately gives him a really easy way to go "oops well it was my brain in a blender I don't have to be responsible"

user15026
@Nzall this is a bad analogy and doesn't make sense.

user15026
And tbh, did you post it because of that, or because, as you said in the Bridge, it's clickbait?

user15026
Because calling attention to it like that kinda feels....not so great

6:57 PM
@Ash I mainly posted it because it sounded funny when I read it
And also because, you know, in this case there IS actually a rule that states that untrained people may be required to judge if the president is fit to rule. It's called the 25th Amendment (I think), that states the Senate may decide that the POTUS or VP is unfit for the presidency
Not saying the mashed potatoes cauliflower thing is that, but the slurring may be an incentive at some point

user15026
shrug

user15026
The mashed potatoes thing is not even news. It's just...this dude using his status to make clickbait to get attention for whatever he's running for.

7:21 PM
In contrast to the "everything is just fine" we're getting from Trump, here's the CDC:
> The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Americans to prepare for a coronavirus outbreak at home that could lead to significant disruptions of daily life, though the warnings were downplayed by the White House. Congress was told that there’s shortage of masks needed for health workers if one occurs.

get ready for an outbreak (because we evacuated some americans stateside even though you really shouldn't be bringing in disease vectors)

good thing we have a health finance system that doesn't discourage people from going to the doctor lol

7:40 PM
@Unionhawk yeah, about that...

(health justice now, single payer and what comes next by timothy faust available wherever fine books are sold and probably at your library but if it isn't then you can request they buy a copy)

7:59 PM
@Ash That response is just the symptom and not the cause in my opinion. People just say those sort of things to justify what they already want.

@Wipqozn Cauliflowers have wings?
Next thing you'll tell me is that buffaloes can fly.
It's also about context, imo. Trump preferring a well-done steak with ketchup is a funny thing to joke about (because how on earth are Texans electing someone who overcooks steak) but it's weird coming from a presidential candidate.

user15026
@puzzlepiece87 I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

(This is the Colorado House, the Senate already voted (see starred list on right -->)

Sorry, I'll try to communicate it better, let me know if I succeed or not: speaking only for myself, and with zero judgment or anything, your take on the situation was reasonable - I don't believe that any of the things you cited (eating habits, distance diagnoses, etc.) substantially contribute to alter the course of anyone's behavior or the extent to which we hold Trump accountable.
I think Trump, McConnell, etc. were always going to do what they were going to do and get away with it because Americans have a demonstrated severe apathy towards all of it.
I don't feel like small-scale finetuning of the narrative (not characterizing eating habits as childlike, refraining from distance diagnoses) would change any of what happened politically, at all.
That said, I do think improving the narrative would help a lot on the micro level of individuals being able to be respected and receive the mental health assistance they need without stigma, etc.
I'm only disagreeing with your opinion that the narrative deficiencies are making the political outcomes worse in any measurable way.

user15026
Oh, no, I don't think they're making anything worse from a political perspective, or changing anything

user15026
8:14 PM
I am just exhausted by this sort of armchair diagnosing and the idea that it's suddenly okay because it's the President and not your next door neighbour or whatever.

user15026
(although I guess you could frame my worry that this will allow an absolution of guilt as a political perspective thing, maybe)

@Ash Got it, thank you so much for explaining! I misunderstood you and agree 100% with what you said.

8:48 PM
I'm struggling to come up with an analogy for how insane and evil this is.
It's like... praising the sausage maker for their vegetarian principles? or something? except the sausage is people?

@BradC ah, the record where the first entry is "did nothing about continuous riots that ended with a death roll over one thousand, 700+ of which were Muslim"
Oh, this article doesn't mention that he called Modi "The Father of India".
you know ignoring well-known indian father, mahatma gandhi

@Ash Part of why I'm of that opinion is also because I thought there were actually cases where certain parts of being a good doctor (like patient confidentiality) weren't as applicable in cases were strict adherence to these rules could cause harm to others. Stuff like someone with paranoia saying they'd kill someone while in therapy, or a pediatrist finding bruises or signs of rape on a child
and I actually think I remember something about the American Psychiatrics Association making a claim to that effect with regards to remote analysis

Both of those cases are a medical professional encountering things while doing their actual jobs (talking to and with a person in therapy, pediatrician examining a child) not looking at someone on TV.

@Yuuki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldwater_rule#Regarding_Donald_Trump was the rule I was talking about, though it appears to not be the APA but rather a similar organization

9:03 PM
@BradC The United States vs. Article Consisting of 200 Cardboard Boxes More Or Less, Each Containing 20 Bags More Or Less, Each Containing 50 Latex Balloons
oh, not that kind of "blowing up"?

@Yuuki Nope, not that kind. He wasn't re-creating the movie UP.
My brain initially read that headline as "CDC outines panic planning"

@BradC Are those 59 cases all cruise ship passengers that were evacuated?

9:19 PM
> Azar confirmed four new cases of the virus from repatriated cruise ship passengers, bringing the total in the U.S. to 57.
Looks like they corrected it to 57? Not sure of the makeup of the 55 existing cases (before they added 4), but mostly?
> 18 former passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.
10 in California
2 in Illinois
1 in Wisconsin
1 in Arizona
1 in Washington state
1 in Massachusetts
1 in Texas
doesn't add up to 57, though. (shrug emoji). But does have some detail for the cases not from the cruise ship

9:37 PM
So so far, most cases have recently visited Wuhan or are secondary infections. No tertiaries yet?

@TimStone uh oh
"Effective immediately" is code for "someone made an oopsies and everyone's about to find out".

@Yuuki or perhaps "Bob Iger is running for President"

@BradC that falls under the category of "someone made an oopsies".
> Reddit today announced that it would be removing some of T_D subreddit's moderators, claiming they "have harassed Reddit employees, stickied rule-breaking content, and generally undermined progress." The site also said it would be "vetting" replacements.
Apparently, there's a requirement that any replacement mod not have 500 karma from other quarantined subs.

user15026
10:09 PM
@Nzall There are things about duty to report, yes, but that gets reaaaally sticky if they're not under your direct care etc.

10:24 PM
@TimStone Stepping down effective immediately often is phrasing used for misconduct or firing. In this case, the situation is different. For anyone wondering:
> Chapek was one of the leading candidates to replace Iger who announced his retirement in 2018. Chapek beat out other top candidates, like direct-to-consumer head Kevin Mayer for the role.
