The tldr is essentially the program got shut down because it wasn't actually good. So it's just another case of the PC party just dangling taxes since that's all their base cafes about.
> But independent experts who examined the effects of the credit's previous iteration say it ultimately did little to boost transit ridership and proved an unsuccessful measure to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
> It also tended to benefit wealthier users, he calculated.
> Transit riders earning between $90,000 and $100,000 ended up receiving 40 per cent more from the tax credit than those making between $25,000 and $30,000.

But people hear "tax credit" and get excited
user15026
:(
user15026
(Also...there is so much of the country that doesn't have transit...)
user15026
Why not put money into...y'know, making the transit better?
user15026
SO then people...naturally choose it when they can?
Like, if you're in a major city like New York or London or Montreal or Quebec, it's adequate for the most part, because public transit is a good alternative to the car for most nearby travel, but if you live in a rural town like lac-saguay or Sherburne or Saint Marcel or Felmersham, you pretty much need a car because public transit is expensive to fund at such levels

Have you actually used the transit in those places or did you just pick places at random (aka do you know what their transit is like)
user15026
Because just going "it's expensive for smaller places" for some value of smaller doesn't always make sense
@Ash I just picked places at random assuming none of us would live there and that they're far enough away from other towns and cities that a bus every half hour that goes to all nearby locations would be too expensive
user15026
Okay, so you don't actually know anythign about their transit?
user15026
Also, intercity and intracity transit are different
user15026
Because you can do a lot in cities with buses just within that city that helps get rid of cars, it's not just about going from one urban center to another
user15026
(although where I live, we have one bus system that feeds three cities and one smaller town but that's because it's considered "regional" and also the three cities pretty much touch.)
@Ash Yeah, as I said. If you live in a city, you can mostly rely on public transit because you have a lot of it, but if you live in a rural area, either buses are driving at a loss most of the time because barely anyone is taking the bus from north humperdink to south humperdink at 2 PM
user15026
7:04 PM
Yes, but also....I'd not call the places you picked "rural".
user15026
Not all of them anyhow
user15026
I am just not sure what you're trying to prove here
user15026
Like public transit usually sucks because no one uses it because it's not useful.
user15026
If we made routes based on where people go when they like to go there, and then made sure there was enough bus/streetcar/LRT/subway/whatever to do it....people will ride it
@Ash You need to do more than that though. You also need to ensure that there are good connections between major points, so you don't end up with a situation that I often end up with where my train arrives at the station 3 minutes after the most appropriate bus for me passes through
like, having enough transit methods is part of it, but you also need to make sure that everything hooks into everything else properly, because only a minority of people are likely to be able to take a single vehicle
user15026

nods that's part of my "make sure there's enough xyz to do it" - that includes being aware of transfers.
@Ash Yeah. I guess part of the problem in Belgium is that here, trains are a national responsibility for a national company, but buses and subways are a regional responsibility for a different company, and because it's 2 companies it's harder to make transfers work
Because both of them occasionally change their schedules
user15026
Ah, yeah, that's a hard layer of abstraction
user15026
in my city, the LRT and the buses are the same company, you only have to change companies if you want to use the transit that goes to like Toronto/London etc
