The insulation that burned out of control on London's Grenfell Tower killing 72 had never passed the required safety test and should never have been on the building, a @BBCPanorama investigation has discovered. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44200041

@TimStone yeh this is beyond fucked
"lets use this cheap shit to save money. oh it's never passed a safety test, LET STILL USE IT ON THE ENTIRE BUILDING"

12:34 AM
@TimStone iirc it would have cost some absurd fraction of the royal wedding to replace it all
I forget exactly
A 30th? I think?

12:48 AM
Amazing we get headlines like "shooter was spurned by a girl" when the truth is "shooter harasses woman for months, then graduates to murder"

@Unionhawk yeh but it skips the rejection which would have been the catalyst to the graduation

oh my god
GOP lawmaker introduces bill to crowdfund for Trump's border wall http://hill.cm/238sZEo
Sure, let's add another grift to this shit show, why the hell not

@TimStone so Mexico ain't paying for it now

They even asked her about that! And she's like "idk"

@TimStone sooooo
taxes?

12:54 AM
@quartata no, GoFundMe i would assume with the description being a pitch used in The Shark Tank

but
ok
all right

1:15 AM
@quartata Nah, you can make a donation to the Treasury right now if you were so inclined, but you can't like, allocate it to a specific purpose. This would let you do that

Look he's not disallowing them to form a union he's just saying g they won't if they know what's good for them

While Giuliani was not able to prevent the criminal conviction over Purdue's fraudulent claims for OxyContin's safety and effectiveness, he was able to reach a deal to avoid a bar on Purdue doing business with the federal government which would have killed a large part of the multibillion dollar market for the drug.

School shootings and terrible healthcare. It's basically a microcosm of America.

Note the rugby players at the bottom to tackle anyone who they reckon didn't tumble hard enough

@TimStone The more often the phone is checked the more often crimes can be found on it.

If you place everyone under constant surveillance, you'll catch every crime!
Why has no one thought of this before

@fredley "We have had no involvement in the organisation of this event and cannot guarantee the nature of any safety or first aid arrangements. You attend entirely at your own risk."... sounds right

@ArtOfCode A load of volunteer ambulances still show up

Of course, that's just Britain
volunteer ambulances everywhere

Apparently one of the biggest causes of injury is the cheese itself

Yeah, I don't blame the father for saying that because I can't imagine a parent that's willing to call their child a monster.
But John Cornyn is a Senator. Yes, he's a Texas Senator but still.

Yeah though saying you don't understand is different than trying to shift the blame window too so idk
Not sure what I would do in that situation but I'd also not have armed my child 🤔

2:35 PM
@fredley Smashing into people watching?

@Arperum Yup
It's a whole wheel of hard cheese, travelling at up to 50mph

You know things are weird when the safest place to be is falling down a hill trying to catch a wheel of murderous cheese.

Actually, the safest place is probably watching from the top of the hill.
Can't get hit by cheese, can't get hit by someone who tripped.

“Republicans for Cuomo” Headed by the MOOOOOOCH! You. Can’t. Make. This. Up.
lmao holy shit
of course that's a thing

As Roger Stone is circled by Mueller, he's trying to make things hard for his opponents. Since he doesn't have to present documents electronically, he's considering printing out two trailer trucks worth of paper to hand over to Congressional cmtes https://www.npr.org/2018/05/21/613117543/trump-adviser-roger-stone-says-hes-prepared-if-indicted-by-special-counsel-muell
Ah, yes, trolling Congress, that classic way to definitely not get your ass handed to you

When you get to a point where you're purposefully trying to obscure evidence, you might want to take a step back and consider that you may be the bad guy

To be fair he basically already said "Yeah I've probably technically done some crimes" so I guess he has, but I wouldn't count on people willing to go to bat for Trump being willing to go to bat for him, if you're going to intentionally piss them off

5:21 PM
@Unionhawk How long ago was the Mooch? Because it feels like five years.

Trump asked: Will you guarantee the survival of the North Korean regime? @davidfrum @MaxBoot @mischawks https://t.co/mUVsFU5MiR
(the tl;dh of the video is "I mean we won't kill him" which is both not an answer to the question and not very reassuring if you're Kim Jong-Un!)

that's actually quite a guarantee
i'm surprised he went that far

I mean I guess it's technically dependent on what your interpretation of "safe and happy" is, but

trump would probably think he'd be happy as white house custodian

I mean some people are apparently happy to bring on the rapture so idk
Palestinians egg a State Department car in Beit Jala in protest of the U.S. embassy move to Jerusalem. State resleases this response: "The objective was clearly intimidation. The United States absolutely opposes the use of violence and intimidation to express political views."

There's another clip where he says "It'll work out in the end. I tell you exactly how or why but it always does" and that's probably because he's also always been a rich white man and I'm not entirely sure even that's sufficient to resolve international disputes but idk

China's cultural "reeducation" camps? Yes, unfortuantely

@TimStone who's lawyer is avenatti again? I can't follow the clusterfuck of nonsense anymore.

@TimStone wtf? Why is nobody talking about that

Due to ethnic unrest in the western part of the country and no desire to give up control over the area they decided the best approach to reduce violence was to start a massive brainwashing campaign
I mean it is being talked about, but we're also busy being in a trade war with China for no reason and the President called gang members animals so the Chinese would probably not be particularly concerned about any posturing over how messed up that is...
@Arperum Stormy Daniels', though he's kind of just gone on a crusade against Trump and Cohen lately which isn't really his job and it's dumb and annoying

ok, so the right person for maximum clusterfuckery.

@TimStone well, and also gang members is a nice and convenient more broad dogwhistle

6:04 PM
Yeah it's probably extremely Not Ideal because it'll become this whole distraction about how he's Not Good instead of the stuff that actually matters
@Unionhawk Right, absolutely

@TimStone Thank goodness
I mean, he'll probably do it anyway...

🧐
Okay, I have questions

I mean, this feels fairly standard
"they don't want what's best for you, I do"
This is, literally a false statement
however

Right, but it seems kind of weird for him to claim he doesn't want a class system while also having such massive amounts of personal wealth

Does it though

6:17 PM
I don't think that qualifies as news

yawns
I seriously could not care less

I agree with @murgatroid99 and am generally in favor of what Ash is trying to do though I do not care enough to push it myself.

We should just shut the room down then, I'm tired of this policing. This isn't what some random ass person said on Twitter. It's how a billionaire views his relations with his employees which has a huge impact on the lives of many people

I like discussion and I like communal ranting. I'm okay if we have two rooms so people who want one and not the other can participate according to their interests. However, it's not like we have a million regulars here. Not sure if this would survive a split.

The upper class wants to sell the idea that actually there is no real difference, everyone can just sell paypal to ebay and become a billionaire

6:23 PM
@TimStone I enjoy your posts and jokes and I also am interested in this tweet, for the record.

obviously these circumstances are in large part the product of incredible luck, right place right time (I think he got out right before the first dot com bubble or some shit), etc, however
you just gotta believe
He wants to present the idea that the interests of the workers and the interests of management are naturally alligned, so there is no reason to fight

@puzzlepiece87 I don't think we should have two rooms. If you guys really want "only news" stuff here, then I'm going to be moving stuff back to the Bridge.
Because this is just going to end up with more and more splitting until we're basically dealing with quasi-censorship.

And because UAW is exposing that no, actually, the interests are not naturally aligned, so it is prudent to come together as workers to advocate for our interests
instead of just individually working with management
If the power balance does not exist, then there is no reason to organize
that's where he's going with this
why think about the nature of how the manager worker relationship works, when you can pretend it's a flat power dynamic

6:53 PM
@Yuuki I think I'll withdraw my opinion, actually. I've been here for a few months but I've never been in The Bridge and I don't think I have a complete enough picture of things to have informed input.
Also, who is ultimately TIF room owner (founder, maybe, if multiple ROs)? Ash, Tim, or other?

primarily the gaming mod team

If there's split opinion over it, then that person should be able to make the final call, right?
Ah, that is less of a single individual than I was hoping

@puzzlepiece87 TIF ROs are Bridge mods and Bridge ROs.

Not me though
Explicitly not me
I recuse myself from such things

To be clear, I agree with @Ash's concerns, which is why the insinuation that I didn't make a personal decision that something was "newsworthy" before posting is aggravating
Musk is having that conversation because he keeps attacking the story that said that conditions are inadequate at his plants and his now-girlfriend started going off on people suggesting the story was true on Twitter, it's not like he's just musing to the void

"FISA abuse is a serious issue." @SpeakerRyan addresses FBI source controversy https://t.co/YbCA77ss1B

7:06 PM
@TimStone Thanks for your consideration before posting.

@TimStone I didn't even do anything; I just expressed my own opinion. Personally, I don't think "Billionaire business owner says something anti-union on Twitter" is news.

For instance, Paul Ryan talking out his ass is not, in fact, new, but he literally just presided over a vote to reauthorize this stuff not that long ago and drew none of those concerns then
@murgatroid99 I don't think you not thinking that is news is news and yet "that's not news" keeps being repeated over and over

d'ye think we should maybe define what's news
just a thought

@murgatroid99 On the other hand, "billionaire business owner saying something anti-union on Twitter while he is currently dealing with union issues" can be seen as news. Donald Trump saying dumb stuff wasn't news until 2014 when he started running for president.
@ArtOfCode The subset of things that are not olds.

@ArtOfCode I think there was a cursory effort yesterday but that's its hard to pin down to everyone's satisfaction
@Yuuki @ArtOfCode Never mind Yuuki got it
@ArtOfCode Also, this isn't even a new in the world debate, people have it literally every day

7:11 PM
The only relevance of admonishing someone for posting something that's not news instead of just not engaging with it is to suggest that my criteria of news is incorrect and if we're going to have to have that argument everyday we're better off shutting down the room than wasting time

So I think even a socially agreed upon framework could be tough.

If someone is intentionally not putting effort into filtering what they're posting then that's one thing, but we had a conversation about not doing that and I don't think anyone is that disrespectful as to ignore it

I honestly don't care what you guys consider is news or isn't news. The critical issue I want to deal with and I want to minimize doing myself is "hit-and-run" posting.
I'm personally okay with "not news" posts as long as you continue to engage and discuss along that topic.
If a dumb meme about "DAE Republicans are hypocrites" actually stirs up a substantive discussion on how politicians decide issues and whether a position change can be considered "sincere", then I'm fine with people posting dumb memes.

I'm okay with not news topics also as long as it's not crowding out someone's news conversation. I'm okay with a room of broad interests with one principal interest in a way that is broader than the room is right now. I'm very flexible, basically.

As long as you actually talk about it instead of pumping and dumping.
If we engage with each other on our own personal viewpoints, then I consider that "mission accomplished".
tl;dr talk about your posts instead of just posting them

7:16 PM
@Yuuki Out of personal interest, since I sometimes do this, does this mean that your preference would be to say something additional about a link rather than post it and see if people want to talk about it?
@Yuuki Got it, this answers my question.

@puzzlepiece87 Exactly. Some people find it easier to engage when someone puts out their feelings and beliefs first.

Whenever I post something I want to talk about it, but I don't know if anyone else wants to talk about it.

Like this story about a Large Adult Son being sued by his parents to get out of their house has "news" directly in the URL but is extremely less consequential than Elon Musk glancing over workplace concerns

On the bright side, I usually put my commentary in as the hyperlink substitute text.

OK, I'm sorry I said anything. Post what you think is news. I won't step in like that again unless it's seriously low-effort

7:18 PM
So I guess it's possible to express your opinion as a one-line post if you're careful.

@TimStone (Except probably for the parents, I hope that doesn't happen to me when my son is old >_>)

@TimStone That would be an interesting precedent either way.

@Yuuki I avoid posting things sometimes because I feel like I do this a lot and it's not intentional but there is So Much Stuff sometimes and no one here to engage about it with in the moment ._.;
Businessman who sold diseased human body parts gets nine years in prison https://reut.rs/2IBQmmh

Well, you can post something and say "well, this is how I feel about this and it's interesting because..." and that's fine even if nobody engages with you on the topic.

This is a conviction follow-up to this story from January
Not surprising he got convicted, but definitely deserved

7:21 PM
@Yuuki This comment makes a lot of sense to me, I'll try to do better in this regard.

@murgatroid99 I apologise for snapping, it's just frustrating when it feels like I'm being told my judgment is just wrong when I'm trying to be conscious of the concerns at hand
And I am just generally on edge today anyway, which is not an excuse

@TimStone I'm sorry for jumping in like that. I want to help moderate with these new guidelines that I agree with, and I think I got overzealous.

Everyone thought he was an ICE agent. His girlfriend stumbled into the truth, records say http://www.sacbee.com/news/state/california/article211637114.html
Apparently not only do we have to abolish ICE but we have to abolish Fake ICE now too
It seems that he was not acting as a border militia but instead just made up the false personna to get back at his ex-wife who said he had done nothing with himself? Oh, and he made a bunch of explosives for some reason 🤷

Democrats are "inalterably opposed" to giving Trump new low-yield #nuclear warheads. @reporterjoe on the growing fight on the Hill over the future of America's nuclear weapons. https://www.defensenews.com/congress/2018/05/22/democrats-fight-pentagon-push-for-battlefield-nukes/
Thank goodness, the idea that there exists such a thing as a tactical nuke is insanity

8:27 PM
@TimStone I'm still amazed that something like the Davy Crocckett ever existed. And small nukes that are actually useable in war are a very scary idea

The Trump administration is moving to reverse Obama-era rules barring hunters on some public lands in Alaska from baiting brown bears with bacon and doughnuts and using spotlights to shoot mother black bears and cubs hibernating in their dens. https://nbcnews.to/2GIYAn6
can we comment on how oddly specific this is

The fact that the rule exists or that the Trump administration decided to reverse it?

Both? The regulation actually bars many things but the fact that hunters were using donuts as bait is like some messed up Simpsons shit

Because the likely reason that it exists is because people were doing that and it had unintended consequences (leaving bacon and doughnuts out in the wild is definitely going to cause more problems than just telling bears where they might find food like people's houses that smell like bacon or doughnuts) and the likely reason that the Trump administration is reversing it is because Trump saw that Obama made some rules.

article says it was deemed cruel

8:32 PM
Using spotlights to hunt hibernating bears, likely yes.

presumably because it was targeting bears in hibernation?
it's all stupid but yeah

Besides, I think the bear hunting quotas are to reduce the likelihood that a bear stumbles into a neighborhood looking for food, which they really aren't likely to do if they're sleeping in a cave.

Well either way it's made for excellent Twitter fodder

8:53 PM

Heh, in light of what Freidman was facing this is a fortunate turn of events for him

lol good point from a staff member
the library reports stats on a sort of visits per sq ft basis (with some I think dubious definition of visit but eh)
so decreasing sq ft would immediately increase their usage number and bam success
I want to meet this guy

9:17 PM
What use is there in knowing visits/sq. ft.?
I guess it's a measure of... efficiency?

I mean it can be a very useful number if you've got connections to urban development people
They use it as a comparison point between branches
in order to simultaneously claim that they are the "busiest central library in the United States" and that "the main branch is underutilized"

Yeah, I guess I could see that.

ultimately too their dubious definition of visit is the easiest to track I guess, it's harder to track how many people are merely occupying the space playing chess or something
it's super easy to track checkouts
since that's literally half of the thing
