point was the right here doesn't think he deserves a trial and sentencing, that he should just be dead. I think you would still prefer the former, ideally

what I really meant to say is that I have no problem with the lives of the cop and all bystanders being prioritized over that of that guy
in similar situations if the safest thing for everyone else is for the guy to get shot then like... do it
if it's still safe to bring him down alive then yeah try and do it

My position on extrajudicial murder is well known so I have nothing to add here

Again... I'm not advocating for people to just go around killing people vigilante style

I am merely using the correct term for what the police killing people regardless of the circumstances is, if that term makes you uncomfortable then that's really not my problem

Right, and they did arrest him safely and fairly easily by all accounts. People are then trying to downplay that achievement by saying "it would have been better if they just shot him," in order to undermine the overall point that the U.S. police could be better at this sort of thing (and also keep alive the culture of excuses that has lead to a lot of unarmed people getting killed and generally messed up police things)

12:06 AM
If the guy had jumped out of the van and started shooting, then yeah it probably would have been better if theyd shot him
doesn't look like he had a real gun

12:32 AM
@Unionhawk Self defense is a valid defense for killing someone, even if you're a cop. People don't generally describe killing in self defense as "murder" even though it is legally classified as homocide.

I mean, the "you can't prove he wasn't scared" standard aside I suppose you are correct
I just find that deeply unsatisfactory and reductive with respect to the level of force used in the united states though

12:47 AM
last point is key
they don't want this to be used as an example for what U.S. police should be doing
so they're trying to smear it

@TimStone As is facebook apparently.

A thing can be legally fine, or even legally extremely fine, and still be a problem

(I was referring to "reductive with respect to the level of force used in the U.S.")

1:21 AM
I'm not trying to say that most or even many killings by cops in America are actually justifiable self defense (I don't know), or that the level of force currently used by the police in America is reasonable. But when you say things like "regardless of circumstances" you are making what I think is an unjustifiably broad statement and that is what I am pushing back against.

Is there a definition of selling access which this does not meet?
Mulvaney also now pushing to make private a database of consumer complaints, presumably so no one has to ever pretend to act on them

This is a really good thread in general but especially in light of the alleged connections between the Toronto driver and the incel community:

user15026
For the past little while, I've been working on a piece about Toronto's relationship to the alt-right, especially the "manosphere." Unfortunately that research has become relevant. I'm going to share as much as I can here for people who may not be familiar with these movements.

@TimStone holy shit
@TimStone is this a new sid meir game?

3:48 AM
@Ash this is good, but one of the books referenced, "kill all normies" sounds problematic and seems to fall into the "both sides are bad" camp which then leads to disparaging trigger warnings and other gatekeepery nonsense. Many reviews say that it was rushed to press to capitalize on trump/alt right being in the spotlight and it could really have used an editor to catch typos, logical flaws, and structural issues

The Daily Beast: Hank Azaria Willing to ‘Step Aside’ From ‘Simpsons’ Apu Role. google.com/newsstand/s/CBIw0fr9zjo
> “The idea that anyone young or old, past or present, being bullied based on Apu really makes me sad,” Azaria told Colbert. Asked what will become of Apu in the future, Azaria said his priority is to “listen to Indian people and their experience with it,”
10/10 right here. This is exactly how these things are supposed to go. If people are getting upset and start pointing out 'that's racist' you're not supposed to just dig your heels in but listen to them and then make an informed decision
Because if you listen to those folks and others you'll find out that it's not just people complaining for no reason (which way too many people think is the case), but that stuff like this really does cause people harm.
I've mostly been ignoring this whole thing, since I don't watch (new) Simpsons but I saw this story and it made me feel good so I to share

Not a lot of choice given the situation
What are they gonna do, ship the kid by boat while mom flies?
And it's probably generally not recommended due to all the reasons (pressure, weird air, diseases, etc)
(ooh! And extra radiation)

@Arperum Having recently been on a flight, it doesn't sound like it.

A culture that pressures people to apologize for simply expressing a political opinion is pretty broken imo

On one hand, valuing honesty over everything else seems like a dumb proposition to me. "He stabbed me in the face but at least he told me he would do that so he's a good guy" is an odd thought by any measure. On the other hand, people yelling at celebrities for expressing political opinions isn't a new thing.

BREAKING: Joseph James DeAngelo arrested as Golden State Killer https://www.thedailybeast.com/joseph-james-deangelo-is-suspect-in-golden-state-killer-case-according-to-co-author-of-ill-be-gone-in-the-dark/

@TimStone I'm sure it's even older than that.

Oh, sure

There has always been a "seen, not heard" sentiment towards celebrities.

News: Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is introducing a postal banking bill that aims to provide a low-cost alternative to payday loans. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/kirsten-gillibrand-postal-banking-bill_us_5ae07f9fe4b07be4d4c6feae?ncid=engmodushpmg00000004

mentally replace that
or mod abuse replace that if you want I don't care

👀👀👀👀👀👀👀

I am too lazy, but yes

Same

I'm honestly not sure if "turn the post office into also a bank" is necessarily a good idea, but killing the payday loan industry is definitely good so

3:58 PM
@TimStone How is this supposed to work? Are they just planning on losing money with those loans?
The correct way to solve this is to simply limit the fees and interest that the lenders can charge, and eliminate the absurdly expensive payday loans that way

They're just charging slightly higher than the Treasury bond return rate
Which is like a 2% return, versus 300% interest from payday loan companies

for unsecured loans to anyone? That won't be profitable for sure

Agreed, that's going to be a bit crazy

providing basic bank accounts is a very reasonable idea, you want to ensure that everyone has in general access to that. But lending people money for cheap without checking if they can likely pay it back, does sound like it won't end well

@MadScientist yes exactly, neither monetarily or optically

4:04 PM
The expectation is that by providing banking services people can't really get away with not paying you back, I guess? Like, they have nowhere else to cash their paychecks to begin with, which is why places like Walmart started offering that
I'm not sure, I'll have to read the actual text of the bill, but I don't think it's available yet

I mean, for values of won't end well requiring profitability perhaps but like

@TimStone what would stop them to just go again to a payday lender once the post office won't lend them any more money, because they already loaned the max from them?

Hopefully the payday lender going out of business

I'm not defending payday loans, I think they're crazy and should be outlawed, just like they are in many other countries

@MadScientist I mean the postal service could preemptively refuse to allow transactions from them, I guess
Payday loans are predicated on giving the lender the information to collect the money upfront, so if they knew they would be denied collection they'd refuse the loan
But yeah, I'll have to see how the actual bill addresses this, if it does at all

4:15 PM
The basic banking stuff e.g. is already law in the EU, every bank has to provide basic accounts to anyone (with some exceptions like if you're convicted of bank fraud or stuff like that).

4:37 PM
Mostly all accounts here have fees that make them prohibitive for people who barely make enough money to survive
When Sec Mnuchin was asked if he took an AF jet to Fort Knox to watch the eclipse he said: "Being a New Yorker, I don’t have any interest in watching the eclipse" @DanielleBMcLean FOIA'd this pic of Mnuchin and Louise Linton watching the eclipse. Story: http://bit.ly/2qZvz0u
lol it was stupid and obvious that that's what they did but why would you let that picture be taken in the first place then?

Also, what about being a New Yorker makes you not have interest in watching an eclipse?

It was just the dumbest excuse he could come up with at the time
Especially in light of Trump looking directly at the sun

Clearly Mnuchin was attempting to say that Trump is not a real New Yorker.
Trump does seem like a weird mix of Jersey Shore and Florida Man.

And like a fourth of the video is the guy saying "hashtag yeti hashtag nra hashtag ar-15"
I'm not sure why

@TimStone It's like someone took a stereotypical millennial and marinated it in Budweiser overnight.

It's probably important to point out that people have been blowing up coolers full of tannerite before this so it's kind of just a two-fer, but
They could also just not do that

I'm still puzzling over "dragon energy".

It's probably best not to think too hard about it, you can hurt yourself that way

5:09 PM
it's probably related to the dragon of chaos
or some bullshit
JBP stuff

@Unionhawk Is that a reference to Eastern or Western dragons?
If the former, that's a complete misunderstanding of the symbolism of dragons in Eastern mythology. Which is honestly not that surprising.
Dragons symbolize order and hierarchy. There's a reason why "a snake cannot be a dragon" (or something along those lines) is a saying in China.

And I don't think that's what you're intending but that's how it reads :(

That's how "understandable but not acceptable" tends to read.

I don't think his age really makes this sort of thing understandable.

7:02 PM
meanwhile:
OH MY GOD

Given the culture of his day and age as well as old people generally being weirdly perverted (speaking from the experience of living next to an elderly care facility), I would not be surprised if this story is true. That doesn't make it acceptable though.
@Unionhawk Wait, the Simpsons stopped being funny because Apu might no longer appear? Like, that's the reason why it's not funny anymore?

user15026
@Yuuki I'd not be surprised either for the same reasons (I've worked with enough elderly people in my time as a PSW to corroborate your thinking)

user15026
@TimStone So basically, they're not allowing a law that would be a good thing because they want to keep their law that's NOT EVEN A LAW

7:10 PM
Yeah and I honestly don't even understand how the two are connected

yeah unless it's something dumb like they have to clean out this thing that doesn't apply anymore while they're in that area of the law

Like if you're going to openly defy the Supreme Court then just keep doing it I guess? Nothing additional is stopping anyone from removing that language now, as far as I can tell
(but also don't do that, stop being pricks)
