@Unionhawk lol

@TimStone My gut reaction is that if the GOP wants it then they have in mind already some way to exploit it.

@InvaderSkoodge it just doesn't really make sense for committees chosen by leadership, which is also the only committee system that makes any sense for a representative body
Rather than for example the DSA general meeting, which is a deliberative body that represents only itself in practice

that's a parody, or?

it's annoying how blurry the line between reality and parody has become

Right? The best indicator it wasn't actually a WeWork scheme was that there was no apparent way to ensure someone was charged for the space
And...that's not very reassuring

It makes sense but also whether or not people want to vote for you is of relevance
Ocasio-Cortez isn't mobilizing against Nancy Pelosi. She's praising her effusively. Tim Ryan and Seth Moulton very much are, though. And yet donut twitter doesn't seem nearly as upset about that as they do about Ocasio-Cortez. Wonder why that is.
Narrator: It was because everything is really dumb

Do you think it might have something to do with the very origin of the donut emoji
iiam

I honestly couldn't remember what that was about but I'm sure it, too, is dumb

@Unionhawk yeah a lot of tone policing from the twitter centrists

@TimStone it's related to an incident between nina turner and the DNC, wherein the DNC locked her out of some meeting or something, but offered donuts bc they are very polite and not passive aggressive

Lolwut

4:35 PM
@Unionhawk Ah right

More scriptwriters getting fired

"donut twitter"?

Donut twitter is people who were happy Nina Turner was barred per the above incident
They put donut emojis in their usernames
Because an account called @HillaryWarnedUs told them to
tl;dr I was right and it was quite dumb
“In the movie Isabella Moner plays a rebellious teen. I want to know what is the most rebellious thing any of you did as a teenager.” A Today Show personality just asked this of a group that includes Mark Wahlberg.
lmao
Unfortunately it was a short-lived segment so he didn't have to, you know, bring up the hate crime

IIRC, Pelosi is pretty effectively at getting Democratic legislation passed. Now whether or not you think the legislation being passed is a good thing is up to you, but typically you want someone who can mobilize votes in the Speaker seat. There's a reason why she's demonized so much by Republican talk shows and political ads.

Yeah, I don't have qualms against Pelosi as it relates to the people trying hardest to unseat her which afaict just want to be Speaker
Like those actually trying versus the ones we're ending up talking about for whatever reason

5:05 PM
I'm just overall frustrated with current leadership and am disappointed that senate minority leader deals was unopposed more than anything
I think Barbara Lee in democratic caucus leader (I think that's what she's running for) could be good, idk who else in the house
Or the Senate honestly

I'd be more willing to buy "What could Schumer do tho?" if not for the fact that there was zero reason to go home to campaign in exchange for confirming those judges

Right like

CNN: Trump argues in court filing that he can limit journalists' access to White House.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/14/media/trump-response-cnn-lawsuit/index.html
This entire administration should be in jail
> The government's lawyers said in Wednesday's filing that the back and forth between President Trump and Acosta during last week's press conference, during which Trump strongly criticized Acosta, qualifies as "due process." They also cite Sanders' statement the night of that press conference as "notice of the factual bases for denial."
> The "conduct" mentioned by Sanders in the tweet that the government lawyers cite actually refers to a false and since-dropped argument that Sanders had made in the aftermath of the press conference — that Acosta was "placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern."
> The administration has backed away from that argument in recent days, and it makes no appearance in the government's first legal comment on the case Wednesday. Even when the filing directly quotes Sanders' tweets, it leaves out that part.

I mean I'm all for freedom of the press but when jim acosta beheaded the white house intern on live TV, that was a step too far

@Unionhawk as a centrist, he should have only cut the head halfway off

San Jose is one of America's greatest hubs of online innovation. So why has the Capital of Silicon Valley fallen behind when it comes to fast, affordable broadband? The answer: San Jose's 5G Tax. https://bayareane.ws/2B4C8F3
Uhh
No actually that doesn't answer the question at all

@TimStone The reason their internet isn't as good is because of a tax on a tech that's not out yet

I'm sorry you have an incurable hard-on for 5G but this is a literal city so why can't they put fiber through conduits?

Makes perfect sense

I support Pelosi, I think 97.4% of the criticism against her is pure unadulterated sexism

Buddy I have news for you about my opinions on Chuck Schumer too

The group of incoming Democrats that are suggesting supporting someone besides Pelosi (without actually putting forward someone specific) isn't even from the progressive side, they are mostly centrists.

Barbara Lee said she might run back in June or so and I think that'd rule (but I think she's only running for democratic caucus leader, wherever that falls on the ladder)

@Unionhawk Eh, I think Schumer has been pretty spineless, and has seemed unwilling to take even the mildest stand against the worst impulses of the majority repubs

@BradC which is why I find it absurd that criticism of leadership is just dismissed in this way
Like it sucks that Chuck ran unopposed
We're going to get more fantastic deals like the senate majority gets to confirm fifty judges in exchange for a two week break to campaign

7:43 PM
Maybe it has just been because of less opportunity (with the Republicans in the house in a mess of their own making, with the split within their own party), but I don't see Pelosi as having the same problem

@Unionhawk Because there's probably a San Jose in Texas as well.
San Jose Island or San José Island (also known as Saint Joseph Island) is a barrier island on the Gulf Coast of Texas in the United States. The island is about 21 miles (34 km) long and 5 miles (8 km) wide. The island is oriented generally northeast-southwest, with the Gulf of Mexico on the east and south, Aransas Bay on the west, and Mesquite Bay on the north. At the southern end of the island is Aransas Pass (not to be confused with the City of Aransas Pass which is on the mainland), beyond which is Mustang Island and the town of Port Aransas. Aransas Pass is protected by jetties extending...

> Cereal cannot be purchased legally without a valid photo ID. “If you buy a box of cereal — you have a voter ID,” Trump continued. “They try to shame everybody by calling them racist, or calling them something, anything they can think of, when you say you want voter ID. But voter ID is a very important thing.”
There's even more insane stuff in that interview
I don't live in the US, but I'm pretty sure you can buy cereal without a photo ID

Flake is claiming he will refuse to confirm judges in either committee or on the floor until McConnell brings a bill to protect Mueller forward
He's also Jeff Flake, though

9:27 PM
@TimStone unfortunately there are 99 other senators who will
and last i heard, i thought mcconnell stopped that "single senator can gum up the works" thing
otherwise every dem looking at 2020 would've pulled it on J. K.

They'd have to bring Pence in for every vote, which they certainly could do
At least until the new Congress anyway, but Tom Cotton was just going off about how they'd work Thanksgiving and Christmas to get them confirmed
So they're clearly in a rush

yeah that's their main goal moving forward

And to be clear, Flake tried to bring the issue to the floor via unanimous consent but McConnell blocked them, after which Flake threatened this action, so it's a little more real than Flake's usual words, but

confirming as many lifetime judges as possible

Still Jeff Flake

9:30 PM
so that they can get any possible future progressive agenda declared illegal
by weaponizing the synergy of two extremely anti-democratic institutions

@TimStone Yep, long tired of holding up Flake as a principled republican based on a few mildly critical tweets. This action seems like a step in the rigth direction, but only if he follows through

Hey US media folks, here, I would argue immodestly, is how you interview a Trump supporter on Trump's lies: https://t.co/D8qElaic7o

@GodEmperorDune Thanks for the cc! Pretty good analysis over all though voter suppression appears nowhere inside.

@puzzlepiece87 yeah i was wondering about the impact of that as well

@BradC Yeah, for once I suspect he will, he only has to hold out for two months to get credit and it seems trivial enough for McConnell to bring the bill to the floor
He doesn't want to, but he does want to confirm judges, so 🤷
I don't think they really give a crap how the Mueller probe turns out as long as they can insulate themselves, there's just no advantage to rocking the boat
There's like 0% chance Trump gets impeached versus just at worst being primaried in 2020, so judges is a much more important goal for McConnell at the time being
Of course, on the flip side
It's certainly possible everything will come up dumb
Trump announces his support of a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill, which Sessions had opposed. He says it'll "make our communities safer and give former inmates a second chance at life."

9:43 PM
@TimStone ...Sounds good... What's the catch?

But yeah we should probably circle back to how Facebook used both real anti-Semitism and faux anti-Semitism to try and prop up its image!

@TimStone uhhhhh this might be good?

'Cause that's pretty messed up
@GodEmperorDune Yeah I have to read the text, I think it's one of those "That's better, not great, but better" type deals

yeah facebook has gone pretty fuct lately

@Unionhawk Are you a frequent theme park goer?

9:46 PM
@puzzlepiece87 nah it wasn't batman

@puzzlepiece87 former ride worker

damn, i don't remember the exact ride but i think the track was orange
not goliath
ugh @puzzlepiece87 this is gonna bother me all day

> The compromise would eliminate the so-called stacking regulation that makes it a federal crime to possess a firearm while committing another crime, like a drug offense; expand the “drug safety valve” allowing judges to sidestep mandatory minimums for nonviolent drug offenders; and shorten mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenders
Including, apparently, retroactive corrections for a disparity between crack and powder cocaine sentencing

@TimStone Ther's your catch.

@TimStone yeah this sounds better but not great

9:49 PM
Also something about keeping inmates within 500 miles of their home according to Trump but I have no idea if that's true or he's just saying stuff
That quoted bit is summary from a draft text of the bill
@Arperum Hmm?
Oh, oh dear. The catch is that Kushner is getting credit so there's probably something like "You can't go to prison for crimes your dad also did" snuck in there
Anyway, this is just a preliminary announcement of his support, we'll have to wait for the actual bill to show up Sometime

@TimStone yet another time he walks out of the room without signing the bill

lol
