There's a lot in here that I'm curious about: Why do you think that internet should not be shared? Why should the OP become more aggressive about collecting? The last one I can agree with, but it still needs backed-up evidence on why it isn't a good idea. Additionally, the asker already mentioned that they may have forgotten to remind them because they are socially awkward. Do you have any tips on how to improve the interaction keeping in mind the social awkwardness? Thanks in advance :) — ElizB 51 secs ago

@ElizB — My comment doesn't suggest a way to greet someone, or whether the greeting would be perceived as polite, so I suspect I'd receive a bunch of downvotes for posting it as an answer. I think it might help the OP fine-tune the question, though; the OP has expressed uncertainty about the appropriateness of offering a greeting, even though the question is focused more on the mechanics of how to offer a greeting. — Gaultheria 36 secs ago

Hi there! Welcome to IPS. I think that this question may be too broad, as "what are some techniques I could use to use XYZ" could attract opinion-based answers. Would "how to express my opinions to my mentoree without ending up in a heated situation" would address your issues? If not, maybe you could try to find answers on the Workplace.SE, I believe they might be of greater help for answering your question as it is phrased right now. Thanks for the reply Amanda. I struggle to understand, your address didn't change over the past four years, and they already went to your place to challenge your decision, right? Having been in shared accommodation like this for more than 5 years, I can confirm this approach has worked really well. And it's worth emphasising how it avoids the drama of splitting things up when you move out. If there are things people don't want to share with each other, they can just make that clear and then keep it in their own room/cupboard. — Tim 1 min ago

As a supplement to @sphennings' comment, we've had some discussion on the word "tactfully" before. Just make sure you specify what "tactfully" means for you in this situation (it seems to mean that you want to tell your mom that her "support" is doing more harm than good without upsetting her or making her feel bad--in which case it might be better to just say that!) — scohe001 26 secs ago

@Reubens4Dinner I never said to be dishonest or patronize him. Not even a hint and it's offensive that you even suggest that without evidence. Yes, you do have respect issues to deal with, because he's not respecting your invitation or hospitality in addition to what you yourself describe in a comment. I'm not sure about your fourth post: It carries a reference to the policy as it's enforced on The Workplace, but there's been plenty of Workplace users that go 'but my answer floats on Workplace' (And to be honest there is a great deal of difference between our back up policies, it seems). It might confuse people more than it helps, and even lead to more rules-lawyering from people that want to use that freer implementation to post their opinion and not put more effort into backup? What do you think? As for the rest, I think we can add those safely. — Tinkeringbell ♦ 1 min ago

As I read this question, it seems like the main issue is choosing a gift that fits in your girlfriend's budget, but you're not sure what that budget is or should be because she: (a) is saving for school, and (b) does not contribute money towards her basic cost of living. Is that interpretation correct? — Upper_Case 1 min ago

@Tinkeringbell that's a good point - I was including it more for the historical value since it's one of the earliest metas about requiring backup, but we've definitely diverged from Workplace since. The question might benefit from some exposition on what consequences might be like if Alex makes a different choice in this scenario. I've had success with demonstrating that the risk of harms is not unique to making a specific, "right" choice, even if there are potential downsides. But without some way to evaluate what the "objective" fear is (how much is inherent to the choice vs. Alex's fixation on the fear), how rational the fear is, and what alternatives exist, answers might not be much different from or more specific than the options you've already tried. — Upper_Case 36 secs ago

I think that the question would be much improved with a bit more detail about what your father's expectations are and what your brother's expectations are. Not necessarily rolling back the edit, but a footnote saying "thou shalt not have fun" isn't very precise, nor is your brother feeling he has a "right to slack off". To get this reopened, I'd suggest looking at what goal you want to achieve. Restore relationships with your professors? Restore your reputation? Convince your instructors that this was a one-time event? Something else? Reading through your question, I'd suggest starting over again. Fair enough. Could you give a similar treatment, relative to the existing question, to the downsides of not making the choice Alex is leaning towards? Even your own assessment would be enough ("I think that if Alex doesn't make the clearly right choice, his risk of negative consequences is a bit lower, but there are no positives to get that way either"). Others can probably be more helpful than me on this question, I'm just trying to think of information I could potentially use to offer something more than what you've already tried. — Upper_Case 32 secs ago

@Reubens4Dinner Patronizing would be like "Oh yes My Lord, would you also like that served on a Silver Platter with the Fine China?" Unless you actually do own a restaurant, those are simple facts he has to accept. Also, omission is not a lie or dishonest unless you are intending to deceive, important difference.
