Q: Responding to being told to "walk around instead of staying alone in your room" by a stranger knocking on your wall?

prosody-Gabe Vereable ContextThis seems to be a fairly common scenario for me only/uniquely, til COVID-19 hit and now everyone's doing it. I figure the judgement is still there, but now you have to qualify yourself to be alone, with reasons unrelated to my being alone (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alone). I wa...

@Sarov you are clearly unfamiliar with the dead parrot sketch

I am, yes.

(the parrot is a 'norweigian blue')

If that's a joke I don't get it.

There's no parrots in Scandinavia?
Admittedly it's also monty python so absurdist humor verging on pure nonsense 😁

3:41 AM
Ahsee.
Also, there must be some parrots in Scandinavia, like in pet stores at least!

4:20 AM
Well not native species 😁
A feral parrot is a parrot that has adapted to life in an ecosystem to which it is not native. The birds are often descended from pets that have escaped or been deliberately released. Many species of parrots are highly social, and like to gather in large flocks. Not all feral parrots are able to adapt to life outside of captivity, although having a pre-existing nearby parrot colony can assist with the adaptation process. Feral parrots may affect native biodiversity, human economy and wellness. They are present in many countries, including in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia...
Mental note. Refer to @Tinkeringbell as a feral parrot if I get annoyed at her
2
@Sarov well those don't count. And they aren't nörwegian blues.
Though Norwegian forest cats come in blue, which is really grey
So a Norwegian Blue can be a thing but not a parrot

Q: Unable to fall asleep

Chilly Cheese Carlos CabbageI had been playing games like outlast , resident evil , fnaf since I was 12 , now I'm not exactly scared but I'm not sure . I'm failing to fall asleep before 3 30 am and wake up at 9 30 to 10 . Kindly suggest what I should do and if this is a matter of concern . Again I'm not scared .

Q: My partner won't acknowledge my strength

Technolo JesusWhen she does this I try bite her to remind her of my might. But she refuses to admit it. So that's when i whipped out the big guns: I said "baby do u appreciate our relationship? Because I helped build it using my skill and inner strength". She is still thinking about her answer but until then I...

7:43 AM
@MiG How are you today? :D

MiG
8:25 AM
Feeling pretty good... Got a deliciously crispy loaf of bread just now, and the sun is beaming into the living room <3
No meetings until 10, so I put on Bonobo's LateNightTales album :)
And how are you?
@ExtrovertedMainMan wtf is that? :x
Is he just bragging? o_O
In a terribly bad way, I might add - although I find any bragging bad :x

@MiG Doing good too. Have lots of work to do today, but that'll only make time go faster :D I'm going home to have dinner with my parents and grandma tonight, it's dry weather so the new pavement should be ready for sweeping this afternoon, and tomorrow I'm going shopping with a friend, which I am really looking forward to :)
@JourneymanGeek Hah... This was in the news here this morning: The number of one species of 'feral parrots' in our big cities has doubled in 10 years XD

MiG
8:44 AM
@Tinkeringbell we've made dinner reservations at this new place tonight \o/ and will be off to a museum tomorrow :)
@Tinkeringbell halsbandparkieten I bet
The rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), also known as the ring-necked parakeet, is a medium-sized parrot in the genus Psittacula, of the family Psittacidae. It has disjunct native ranges in Africa and the Indian Subcontinent, and is now introduced into many other parts of the world where feral populations have established themselves and are bred for the exotic pet trade. One of the few parrot species that have successfully adapted to living in disturbed habitats, it has withstood the onslaught of urbanisation and deforestation. As a popular pet species, escaped birds have colonised a number...
oh, so cute <3

They're green, I hates them :P

MiG
had a lovebird when I was a kid, they're incredibly cute and social <3

I had a parakeet (technically two as the first one died within weeks)
He was an asshole.

MiG
9:00 AM
:D
what did he do?

Just never managed to get him tame. So he would just peck really hard (to bleeding) at any human part within his reach.

lol
Some critters are just angry

MiG
@Tinkeringbell ouch :x
I raised mine from a very young age, that probably made a huge difference
was probably 1 month old when we got her
would still have a mind of her own and definitely bite when she didn't want to be held, but she would always immediately hang out with me when we let her roam free in the living room :)
sit on my shoulder, scream into my ear :x
also nibble on my earlobe for some reason... never bite fortunately :x

Yeah, first one I had was looking like it would turn out like that too before it died. Oh well, I learned a lesson ;)
Pets are more hassle than they're worth and they will die :P

MiG
anything will... plants... humans... that pigeon that is looking funny at me from the building across... :P

9:16 AM
Yeah, fair. Though plants have a larger chance to outlive you :P

MiG
so do tortoises :P

True. Tortoise it is then.

MiG
:D

With all the hassle that comes with it XD
I guess a tortoise would still make less of a mess than the pavement guy did this week XD

MiG
I suppose you could put your feet up on their shell when they're sleeping in front of the TV :d

9:18 AM
@MiG Aren't tortoises cold-blooded? That would probably mean cold feet then, no thanks.

MiG
9:28 AM
they also have pretty hard shells, so even if they were warm blooded, it wouldn't get through that easily :P

9:39 AM
I thought they had blood vessels and nerves running through their shells too?

MiG
no idea, I've never had one :P
I know birds have a blood vessel running in the center of the nails on their claws, you had to be very careful when clipping those

9:56 AM
Yeah. I googled, they have blood vessels running through their shells. Makes sense too, if they're cold-blooded they'd otherwise have a very hard job warming up, I guess.

MiG
yep, true :)
That reminds me :D
"Darwin was a member of the gourmet society, whose goal it was to eat as many rare animals as possible" :x

10:56 AM
@MiG Heh. Actually, I could get behind such a club :P

MiG
oh dear :x
the story I was looking for, didn't feature in that video sadly :)

Oh, I see @prosody-GabeVereableContext lurking. Hi! I saw you mention you looked at other questions as an example to follow... interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/q/3997/1599 < That list may help you find some that are actually good, it also describes why they are thought of as good :)
@MiG LOL

MiG
11:16 AM
QI is easily my favourite comedy show :)
19th season now, and still as strong as the very first episode <3
think I started watching that one 6 seasons in, then decided to watch the first 5 seasons and found out they were all hilarious :D

I may need to check it out too, this part at least was funny. Though I must admit I don't often watch comedy :)

MiG
the setup is brilliant - QI stands for Quite Interesting, and you basically have Stephen Fry (and now Sandi Toksvig) who are extremely well read and funny hosts, and four panelists (usually comedians) :)
the panelists get asked questions, however there is a huge penalty for obvious and/or wrong answers which make a claxon go off, so there are these hilarious moments where they try to dance around not giving those answers :D

Sounds a bit like 'Dit was het nieuws'

MiG
Think I watched a few clips, this is so much funnier imo :)
I have to admit I have a strong dislike for jan jaap van der wal, so that doesn't help

Not saying it is good :P But it reminded me a bit of it.

MiG
11:28 AM
no news in QI, just any and all interesting facts :)
and they are self critical too, in a funny way... In an early season episode they asked "how many moons does Earth have?" -> Rich Hall says "one?" -> claxons, turns out there is a small asteroid named Cruithne which shares an orbit...

MiG
then, several seasons later, in another episode where Rich Hall is a guest, they ask it again... So now he says "Two" -> claxons go off again, further research and discussions with astronomers turned out there are thousands of this class :D
You should have seen the look on Rich's face at that moment, just utter disbelief while the entire studio goes up in roaring laughter :D :D :D

hahaha okay but that is also a tiny bit mean :P

MiG
@Tinkeringbell true, but still hilarious :D

We'll see. First impression is that it at least doesn't involve as much cursing and vulgarity as Dutch comedians.

MiG
11:43 AM
probably not :)
what draws me most to British comedy like this is the use of absurdism, it's a bit more about making you think than in your face stuff like dit was het nieuws :)
note btw that this is probably the one time they revised an answer four times in twelve years, they usually do their research well and get it right :)

@MiG and the fact that there's a lot of... strange wordplay

MiG
in dit was het nieuws?

British humour in general :D
and euphamisms

MiG
ah yes :D

I don't know much about dutch tele

MiG
11:48 AM
lots of "nudge nudge, wink wink" (this comes from a Monty Python sketch btw) ;)

@MiG say no more!

MiG
:D :D :D
SAY! NO! MORE!

Well in general

A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat!

I mean, who else would create the term "Tired and Emotional" ?

MiG
11:50 AM
:D

I love Monty Python, and I love QI

MiG
still got season 19 of QI bottled up, saving that for a rainy day

12:04 PM
I've gotta watch Monty Python someday. Waaay too many references to that online and I don't get them XD

MiG
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Python%27s_Flying_Circus - for some reason I thought it was very short, but 45 episodes at 30m each :)
while you're at it, pick up on Fawlty Towers as well :D
that's only 12 episodes, but hilarious :)

Yeah that's the problem, people keep adding to the list :P

MiG
You better get cracking then. C'mon. Git! :P
tbh, you can probably stick to some of the iconic ones that have made it to memedom, watch the rest when you have more time :)

12:21 PM
I don't have time! Tonight I'm busy, tomorrow I'm busy, Sunday I'll be busy ...
And then I have to work again XD

MiG
"tijd heb je niet, tijd maak je" :P

Maybe, but if I do create time I prefer to spend it on gaming, or more cleaning XD
My home is in real need of a thorough clean after the pavement guy left...
And I don't think I can get it all done on Sunday.

MiG
ouch, muddy boots I guess
@Tinkeringbell heh, which games?

Not just that... but the amount of mess a single man can make, uuuuugh. There are coffee stains basically *everywhere*, I even found some on the door frame. Breadcrumbs and cookie crumbs too. He went pooping, and just threw both the empty *and* the new roll in the sink, instead of hanging the new roll and using the bin for the empty one.

Then there's stuff like cleaning the windows on the outside, which is something I kept postponing because it makes no sense to do so when there's just dirt that will get onto them with the very next bit of rain...
@MiG Lately, mostly Pokémon games. But also Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing and Professor Layton.
And I just bought "Ring Fit Adventure"

12:37 PM
@Tinkeringbell lol NO COMMENT

He left the toilet seat up too, but I can see how that's 'fair' as I leave it down :P
But just... I felt more like a 'canteen lady' and 'cleaner' than a woman living in her own apartment this week XD

MiG
@Tinkeringbell Well, there are a lot of cliches about builders... and some are true :d

@Tinkeringbell I'm literally thinking of bribing a trusted friend with airconditioning and indian food when I get work done on my place
Which reminds me!

MiG
@Tinkeringbell that's a thing I've heard is a topic of discussion in some households... gladly not ours :P

12:43 PM
@MiG In this case... most of them really were, yes.
@MiG I'm used to my dad and brothers just putting it down again... I'm spoiled :P

MiG
@Tinkeringbell Very different games for me I guess, not much atm, but before lots of FPS, RTS and RPGs :)

@Tinkeringbell well if you're living on your own, you just leave it as you like

Stardew Valley qualifies as RPG, I think.

If you've got someone human living there... train them well?

Thinking of getting some Harvest Moon too.

12:45 PM
@MiG At the moment, we have one toilet a person at the current place :D

MiG
@JourneymanGeek speaking of interpersonal skills... maybe consider the other human for who they are rather than trainable objects? :rolleyes:

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I just consoled myself with the thought that this was temporary, that this guy would only be there for 3 days... instead of wasting time trying to educate him XD

@MiG nonsense!
@Tinkeringbell exactly
@MiG I mean, its not like I'm suggesting electric training collars.

MiG
@Tinkeringbell oldfashioned fantasy ones, nothing anime related for me :)
@JourneymanGeek just the fact that you casually threw those into the discussion makes me suspicious :P

Stardew Valley is a pixel art thing, not anime!

12:46 PM
@MiG I've never been accused of using one so far.

MiG
ah ok, I assumed based on the title :)

I should try a fantasy one though, someday.

MiG
@JourneymanGeek that could just mean none of your subjects have lived to tell the tale

renotalk.com/forum/topic/71070-2-room-bto/… is very similar to my future place I think

12:47 PM
@MiG Subjects? DO I LOOK LIKE A SCIENTIST OR ARISTROCRACY?

MiG
@Tinkeringbell oh, that actually looks pretty nice :)

(well I had mad scientist hair till this morning..)

MiG
@JourneymanGeek I was more thinking reclusive dweller :P

@MiG It is! And the creator is working on a new game in the same 'universe'.

@MiG I do not have a dank basement with chains and stuff

12:48 PM
Well that's no fun.

MiG
Agreed

Well I am getting a room with a steel door and reinforced walls...

MiG
...why?

@MiG Why not?

MiG
Have you ever seen the movie Conspiracy Theory? :x

@MiG tbh, most people use it as a store room

MiG
They flip the meme upside down because it turns out they are ACTUALLY out to get him :D

I'm wondering if I can use it as a workspace/home lab

MiG
I know in Israel all homes are required to have a safe room... but why Singapore?

@MiG In case... uh
I don't even know who would bother to invade us
We could probably wipe the floor with either of our neighbours, and I think the americans would be quite grumpy if the chinese tried anything

@MiG Singapore always tries to copy us :p

MiG
@Mithical heh, copy whom?

@Mithical I'd be offended but its... true
@MiG the isrealis.

MiG
Ah, Israel :)
Do you spend a lot of time in that safe room? I had a mate in one of my online games who would regularly just bug out for a little bit, turns out he would move his laptop to the safe room

@MiG I don't have one yet

MiG
12:53 PM
I meant @Mithical

But it has network and power. If I can get ventilation set up, and a desk with 2 monitors, and maybe some sound treatment....

MiG
@JourneymanGeek So, why are YOU building a safe room? :x

I do not spend much time there, no

I'm not
all new build apartments have one, and I think its hilarious so keep telling people.

MiG

12:55 PM
it's, as @JourneymanGeek mentioned, mostly used for storage (or a guest room in our case)

MiG
@Mithical Depends on where you live I suppose, think he was close to the Gaza strip

right, I'm clear on the other side of the country

@MiG the MCP (oh wait, whoever the brits didn't get, probably died of old age), the soviets, the russians, the indonesians (oh wait, they got rid of the guy who got rid of the guy years ago) the malaysians ....
the chinese?
But its cheaper for them to just buy the place

MiG
@JourneymanGeek Just to be clear, is there any actual threat of harm and/or invasion, and if so, who would people in Singapore be most afraid of?
We don't usually associate Singapore with local or regional instability... HK very definitely yes, but Singapore...

@MiG No
There is none
@MiG there isn't
like not at all

MiG
1:02 PM
So why the hell are people building blast shelters? :D

\o/
Cause someone might decide to ?

MiG
I mean, at this point I bet it's actually ze Germans

Cause its part of our national identity that no one will protect us and we're all doomed unless we fight to protect our country, or something like that

MiG
You're probably better off with a fast boat and a few weeks' worth of fuel than a damned blast shelter

@JourneymanGeek see, like I said

MiG
1:04 PM
:D

@Mithical well y'all do have occationally hostile neighbours
and the rocket fire whenever certain non/semi governmental organisations want attention

MiG
"occasionally"

The Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation or Borneo confrontation (also known by its Indonesian/Malay name, Konfrontasi) was a violent conflict from 1963–66 that stemmed from Indonesia's opposition to the creation of the Federation of Malaysia. After Indonesian president Sukarno lost power in October 1965, the dispute ended peacefully and the nation of Malaysia was born. The creation of Malaysia was a merger of the Federation of Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia), Singapore and the British crown colonies of North Borneo and Sarawak (collectively known as British Borneo, now East Malaysia) in September...
The Malayan Communist Party (MCP), officially the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM), was a Marxist–Leninist and anti-imperialist communist party which was active in Malaysia from 1930 to 1989. It was responsible for the creation of both the Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army and the Malayan National Liberation Army. The party led resistance efforts against the Japanese occupation of Malaya during World War II, and later fought a war of national liberation against the British Empire during the Malayan Emergency. After the departure of British colonial forces from the Federation of Malaya, the party...
these are pre-AQ the only things we needed to worry about
there was one attempt to attack us with rockets in recent times? Like the neighbours were like "dudes, these people are fishy, you want em?"
OH

MiG
I have to admit, I have some sort of very targeted dyslexia so I keep reading 'irritants' when the news mentions 'militants' :x

MiG
1:10 PM
which I suppose six guys with light arms are when compared to a full army division

"I know, I'm going to land on that unoccupied island"
Singaporean military OOH TIME TO BRING OUT ALL THE TOYS!
and the police is like "WE WANT IN TOO! LETS BRING IN THE GURKAS"

MiG
sounds like a funny story, but the lavish use of caps, bold, italics and stuff hurts my eyes :x

Well
There was the other time the malaysians invaded us... I mean malayan elephants

MiG
that reminds me of a scene in Tour of Duty :D
Sgt. Zeke Anderson:
Six confirmed kills.

Lt. Myron Goldman:
Really? Outstanding! NVA or VC?

Sgt. Zeke Anderson:
Monkeys. They didn't say which side they were on.

Well they were definately from across the border
