2 hours later…
6:42 AM
Morning!

hi

1 hour later…
7:50 AM
bleeeegh boring meeting morning. 8:30 to 9, 9:30 to 10, and 10 to 12...
Which leaves 1.5 hours for programming :/

8:05 AM
@lila awful timing
Morning!
@Tinkeringbell :/

I managed to start programing during the first meeting since it went over time. Now I wasn't smiling on the webcam when the manager told everyone I passed a certification because I was busy and zoned out :/
If you'll excuse me, I'm going to be busy now for 23 minutes.

@Tinkeringbell :/
@Tinkeringbell x)

8:32 AM
@CaldeiraG Streisand effect at its finest

Ael
Morning people. Today at 8 pm, we will learn if we go into full lockdown or not. Also, earlier this weekend my father asked me to come back home in case of a new lockdown and I think I will do that. I prefere to be alone at my place but I don't trust me enough to take care of myself should I become unwell.
Also, announcing a lockdown when people are in the middle of holidays sounds like a messy idea, but...

@ArthurHv yep

So will you be travelling today, or waiting for 8pm?

Ael
@Tinkeringbell I'm going to wait for the actual announcement. I don't want to go at my parents' until it's absolutely necessary (also, I was planning to see my grandparents this weekend so I'm hopeing I will still be able to do that)

From our perspective it seem lockdown announcement is very likely.
there is only some uncertainty when will it start

8:40 AM
@Ael Fingers crossed.

maybe tomorrow, maybe Monday

Over here, they're hoping to see a decrease/flattening of numbers before the weekend. Only if they keep increasing rapidly they might add measures before the weekend, otherwise the next press conference is next week on Tuesday.

+3299 new cases yesterday with 28 deaths, no lockdown planned yet, we will see

Ael
@ArthurHv If there is a lockdown, my money is on Monday. People are on holliday and they do have to come back home before the lockdown start. But they might announce a "softer" lockdown immediately and the "true" strict one for Monday

i've heard on the news france got their highest number of new cases yesterday

Ael
8:42 AM
@CaldeiraG Honestly, here the issue isn't so much about the new cases but about the fact that we don't have enough hospital beds anymore

@CaldeiraG We've been beating high scores for a while now
@Ael This exactly

@Ael also that, same problem over here, 80% ocupation on metropolitan areas
@ArthurHv same here, not for a while now
it may go to 4k later on

Ael
Like, half our beds are for covid, other are for "other kind of emergency" but soon they will have to choose between "saving this covid person or this car accident one"

Same here basically... we're paying a lot of attention to the increased numbers, but what those numbers really mean is that a few days later, there's an increase in people that are in hospital. And they're trying to keep 'regular care' like hip replacements and stuff going too, meaning they're basically becoming flooded rapidly.

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, we don't do "regular care" anymore. Only urgency

8:45 AM
Even though there aren't as many people with COVID on the ICU as in spring, the number of occupied ICU beds is rapidly changing and we're airlifting people to Germany again.

:/

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Ouf, that definitively seems bad :/

@Ael It is a bit preemptive as well: If we transfer those people now, we can alleviate some pressure ...

Ael
Yeah, but still. It means that Germany is doing "well" and you aren't (but France is doing worse so...)

It amazes me how we got there when you consider after first lockdown there was like 10 new cases a week
the virus is exceptionally fast
and ignores our safety measures quite well

Ael
8:51 AM
@ArthurHv What amazed me is that the governement didn't choose to take precaution by opening new beds and hireing more medical people like they did in Italy...

@Ael I'm a bit cynical but I wouldn't say I'm amazed or surprised, just a bit sad

@CaldeiraG But is it the computer that has IPS the Bot? Because it hasn't talked since you posted this.

Ael
@ArthurHv You are right. I'm actually more angry and pissed of than surprised

@lila no, that computer that is going to be formatted is from work :)
IPS bot runs on a raspberry pi at home
The bot could be down
Can't really check right now

Ael
@CaldeiraG The bot isn't even in the room, so it's definitively down ^^

8:56 AM
@CaldeiraG Oh okay I understand.

Ael
@ips cat?

it doesn't respond to !alive so yea

Ael
See, no cat :(

:(

@CaldeiraG My friend just checked this and the bot is down.

8:57 AM

Ael
@CaldeiraG Oh, thanks for the kitty cald :D

i'm rebooting it as we speak :)

Ael
I like this picture :D

eheh random pic from the api bot uses

Ael
It's a lucky pic then ^^
@ips you back with cat?

awwww

Ael
\o/

Nice ^.^ and so you see, I knew that the bot was sleeping, I knew it, I knew that it is ringing but I just didn't know which bell is ringing.

XD
I really need that cronjob working
i barely understand it though

Ael
@CaldeiraG You don't understand cronjob?

9:07 AM
@Ael I do if i look into docs but I'm lazy x)
If you asked me right now to do one, couldn't get it done

Ael
@CaldeiraG Well, what cronjob do you need? I can probably help
A "once a day" kind of thing?

that would be perfect

@Ael Germany has a totally different system for healthcare, and much more trained ICU personnel and beds. They're not really doing all that well themselves I believe their numbers are quickly rising as well

Ael
@CaldeiraG 0 22 * * *
That's a "everyday at 10pm"

interesting, nice

Ael
9:10 AM
If you do "30 22 * * *" instead, it means "everyday at 10:30pm"
@CaldeiraG Don't hesitate to ask if you need more. I have a tool who makes it fairly easy to use cronjob ^^

@Ael ok so, i see the syntax here, now, do I need to create a .sh script?

the entry point should be runable, either .sh or .py or anything with a shebang

well, as long as it can run on the background, totally fine with it

it will run on the background. The issue with cron is recovering crashes. Cron default behavior iirc is to send a mail to root

@ArthurHv how will it send emails if no mail server is running?

9:23 AM
these will be local mails. You check them with some obscure command. Which is why recovering crashes with cron is difficult :D

ah XD

devanswers.co/you-have-mail-how-to-read-mail-in-ubuntu this details how these mails work. You receive them in /var/mail/username and you read them through either 'less' or some more advanced command line util
there are ways to send them to your real mail but thats more advanced
either way if you are unaware of it, very easy to miss that your program is actually never launched properly

yep
and will it shutdown the previous job?
great, fixed wireguard too while on the way

9:41 AM
@CaldeiraG No, it will launch the provided command at given time regardless, so your script should be either shutting down and starting again, or just start if it is down but then have some way to know if it's already up and running

10:28 AM
@ArthurHv uh, yeah, can a script do that for me? probably yea

10:54 AM
We have today 18280 new cases of the bug, I have the impression that it's maybe not a sudden spike since a month or so, but they are just doing more tests? Because much more people go to the doctor with normal cold and flu symptoms, as always in autumn?

Ael
So, my aunt called me. Long story short: I have finished stress-packing and will be kind of disappointed if a full lockdown is not announced x) (I am greatful that my aunt called by I wish she would have called later today because now I am full of stress and can't really focus on my work)

11:13 AM
@Ael Well you can still travel to your parents even if there's not going to be a lockdown ;)

Ael
I mean, yes. But what is bothering me most is the question "will there be a lockdown" and "when" and if the lockdown isn't announced tonight then the question would still be there. But if the lockdown is announced then I will finally have an answer and it would definitively be a relief
Also, if there is no lockdown but I still go to my parents' I won't be able to use my big sister room because my big sister will visit. But if there is a lockdown, my big sister won't be there so I will be able to use her room
(I have to share my room with my little sister when I'm at my parents')
Sharing my room was never an issue in the past, but now that I have lived on my own, it definitively is

Yeah, I can imagine all that. Well, fingers crossed you'll get an answer tonight!

Ael
Thanks. And also, we (or just us French people) should do as the saying says: hope for the best but prepare for the worst

11:31 AM
Yeah. That's definitely a good thing to do. I wonder what the numbers will be like here today, we have to wait a few more hours for them to come in. Part of me hopes they'll be down, part of me hopes they're up as well so we can just have the full lockdown already and I don't have to worry about my brother going out and partying with everything that has two legs.

Ael
Honestly, if there is going to be a lockdown anyway, I really hope it will be put in place before people go back to work/school after their holidays. IMO, not implementing the work from home after these holidays would be a disaster.
IMO, holidays are just big covid party followed by another covid party when everyone mix together again in school/at work

We have 4 days remote a week in our office currently. There was discussions right this morning to allow people to full remote. That doesn't seem popular with management. We don't know how we will react if we are in lockdown but expected to come a day a week for work.
Some want to disobey, some will take their office day off...

Ael
@ArthurHv Well, I am currently thinking really angry words toward your management

They put everything going wrong on the back of wfh

Ael
@ArthurHv Also, what's the point in allowing working from home if everyone still meet once a week???

11:39 AM
IKR it sounds a bit stupid

Ael
@ArthurHv As I'm saying, very angry and ugly words

we even had people catching the disease in our very company. One of my colleague in Paris. Another had his room mate catch it but was very fortunate and didn't get it.

Ael
@Tinkeringbell I hope you won't mind me making a joke right now. So, did you know that, on average, people have less than two legs? And that (as far as I know) you have more legs than the mean? That's why the difference between mean and median is important ^^
@ArthurHv He didn't get it or had no symptom of having it?

He was negatively tested

Ael
That's lucky indeed
(I'm going to eat, not sure when I'll be back)

12:00 PM
Only noticed now the 'master' change already happened
my new repo already has main

Ah yes, didn't main yoda inform you of that? :P

:P
eh, it didn't change much
i probably need to erase the master boot record or else github associates it with slaves XD

1 hour later…
1:28 PM
better graphics, didn't realize x axis was days

Ael
@CaldeiraG What's the difference in population though? I know we have more people than the US, but how many more?

1:49 PM
> 446 million inhabitants
> The United States 2020 population is estimated at 331,002,651 people at mid year according to UN data.

Ael
So we have ~1/3 more than the US then
Also, this huge pic! People going back to school was really bad

@CaldeiraG I also looked at these c***d-19 plots, look at this one, it's disturbing.

Ael
@lila That is either not a covid plot or the data are all wrong. Covid 19 didn't existed back in 2018
Also, this plot has no title and the legend is cropped.

2:05 PM
:D

@Ael yep

I was disturbed nonetheless

:D :D :D
Okay guess what it is then? ^.^

Ael
@lila A graph of your rep on the SE network?

@Ael Think you're right, good job

Ael
2:09 PM
Except, we can only see "superuser" rep and it's not yours but maybe cald one?

it does seem like it :)

@Ael Haha almost, almost! But it's not mine :D guess who's is it then?

it's mine :P

Ael
@ArthurHv I was very confused at first and was about to say "no idea" but then something clicked ^^

@Ael Okay you guessed right! :D
@CaldeiraG - .^

Ael
2:11 PM
I do like to look at me graph rep for IPS and Meta.SE from time to time ^^

I was just wondering whether I could trick you for this :D

oops

Ael
@lila I guess I'm too smart for it to work on me :p
But you succesfully managed to make me very pround of myself, so thank you. Except you might regret it because I don't handle pride very well :p

that little bump on my SU account was for 3 upvotes + 1 accept
got refunded on the external hard drive case and buying a new one today
hopefully by next week i can clone my system on there

@CaldeiraG Is that flat violet line for Antarctica? I can't think of any other place with no new c***d-19 cases.

2:48 PM
@lila XD :/

3:05 PM
Well, IT asked me to write in a email all the software I need
gonna be a long ride

:(

3:38 PM
+3,960 new cases (+24 deaths), highest number of new cases again
51,996 currently active

3:48 PM
+8.123 but the numbers are incomplete due to an ICT outage (again). So unless we get a whole week of numbers without lower numbers due to outages, I'm not going to get any hopes up yet.

:/

4:04 PM
we have over 33.000 today for France you small fries
idk if it's actually this much higher compared to population. I guess we're mostly on the same boat, with a delta of a few days

@ArthurHv We've been at around 10k for the weekend and yesterday, per 17,5million people

4:26 PM
thought the bot was dead at the right timing XDD
that comment was almost immediate after my command

!!/alive

I'm alive and well :)

Q: How do I know if I love someone (a friend or sibling or even myself)?

NeutralIt's usually said that you are generally fond of the person you love but I don't think that's true in my case. I've tried, every day, to make myself believe I love certain persons but it doesn't work out. It saddens me each time I think of it. Pls, I need help because it's really affecting how I ...

Okay nice.

4:44 PM
@CaldeiraG And exactly the same thing for me, "I'm alive and well" and a second later Extroverted Meta Man posts :D

1 hour later…
6:03 PM
@ArthurHv "small fries" laughs in american ;_;
I've basically stopped looking at the data because it's just ... bad

7:02 PM
@EmC I'm basically in an 'obsessed' phase, but mostly I'm more interested in the measures being taken than the numbers... but the government here is all vague about measures, saying they let them depend on numbers without letting us know what they're looking for, so everyone here is looking and making conclusions on whether the numbers are bad or not...
It's some kind of morbid game by now.

@Tinkeringbell "measures" meaning what sort of restrictions they'll issue?

Yes
It's like a neverending lottery of guesswork, and it never feels adequate/enough for what the numbers are like.

:(
spouse and I are already being more careful than we "have" to be so any additional restrictions from the government probably wouldn't make much difference to us :p
but I'd be shocked if they actually tried to do that here

7:18 PM
Yeah, I'd be shocked if they'd try anything over there as well. At least before the election and the new government being instated!
I'm being more careful that needed too, but I'm sharing a home with three others who are not :/
And my family isn't careful either. Last night mom and I were supposed to go over in the evening to clean some of my grandparent's new place.
Only to find three other people already there that had not business being there.
I went home, and now mom is mad at me too :/

oof, sounds like it was quite a reasonable decision to leave though :/

Apparently not, because 'those people were just leaving'. Even though they f-ing know full well no-one is supposed to see more than 4 different people a day. I am sure I made the reasonable decision though, and I shouldn't be as angry about it :)

yay family :p

Mine's lovely, when they're sleeping :P

hahaha

7:27 PM
I have good news though, I don't know if I shared here yet... I picked up my first, brand-new car last Saturday :D
And I'm not even all that anxious driving around in it.

nice!! :D

Yep! I'm planning on taking it on a first longer drive this weekend, fingers crossed. But so far... It has adaptive cruise control so highways (which used to stress me out a lot) are a breeze now because all I have to do is steer and watch out :)

oh yeah, that's super handy!

Ael
8:09 PM
So, lockdown is officially in \o/ Also the website for trains in France is still mostly dead one hour after the president announcement. I still managed to buy my ticket though

hooray..? :p
well, definitely good for the ticket :)

Ael
Though, I wasn't expecting the lockdown to take effect tomorow night, so now I'm in a bit of a hurry
@EmC I think it's "hooray" because it's definitively good to see the governement taking things seriously and valuing humans life

very true!!

Ael
8:26 PM
Also, I don't thing our gouvernement always took the best decision but, honestly? They are very far from being the worst one IMO

Ael
8:41 PM
Also, given that our president surname is "president of the rich" and "president Jupiter" (because he did compare himself to this god), things could have been way worst

0_0 wow

Ael
Yeah, he does think highly of himself xD

9:25 PM
@Ael heh, really?

The original quote was about what he would think of his presidential style, back in the time he was a candidate. He announced wanting to be a "jupiterian" style, explaining what he meant was willing to be "showing direction, above the melee"and not taking part into "partisan quarreling". The expression have been used against him as well to point out he tends to decide alone of everything. He's been painted as a monarch kind of.

Macron did look like the cheesy entitled romcom villain you wanted to punch in the face, if that's who you mean

Mostly, I think he said that because he wanted to be (very) different from old president, who claimed to be "a normal president"

@Ael \o/ saw on tv too

Ours doesn't introduce any real lockdown measures, just closing gyms and the like, and just broadcasting Covid numbers non-stop in hopes that it will scare the idiot part of the population into not infecting everyone else.
It's . . . not working.
