6:56 AM
Morning!
@ankii yep
@avazula same, IG black, twitter is just BLM tweets and trump

@CaldeiraG Yeah, I decided to stop scrolling through the entire Twitter timeline... I really don't need to see people ignoring lockdown and creating a second wave of corona over here, on top of everything that's happening in America.

@Tinkeringbell I fully agree
I mean, I also stopped scrolling on twitter for the same reason
I'm using reddit to distract myself :P

I'll stick with animal crossing and offline hobbies ;)
Though crochet is a bit hard now too since even Ravelry insists on reminding you the world sucks.

@Tinkeringbell yay
@Tinkeringbell bah

@Tinkeringbell o_o

7:06 AM
I guess I could just make things and keep track of yardages offline...
Then put it in when things are back to normal :)

Nah, there is also so much goodness in the world!
Like ice cream
Kitten compilations
Meta rants

r/aww

People saying there are good things

Oh, I did see a nice thread somewhere yesterday...
something about people cleaning up, and how not everyone is vandalizing stuff..

I'm not vandalizing stuff! That counts for something

7:11 AM
I guess this is good too: nytimes.com/2020/05/31/us/…

It's mostly sitting my arse on something reading what I already know

Oh. Dramatic name change dropping by...
Hi @FadedGiant
You okay?

Yeah, I still wonder why the name change
@CaldeiraG That grabbed my attention: "Rice in your closet is amazing!"

@Tinkeringbell Hi
Yes, okay; just a bit busy at work.

@M.A.R. Lol :)

Yeah that was awesome!

@Tinkeringbell interesting Roller Coaster you have there

My brother made us Zoom/Teams backgrounds with a screenshot from there :P

:-D

@CaldeiraG I will picture that as you loling and suddenly reducing to a smile in a creepy way. Thank you

7:17 AM
@FadedGiant I like Walibi. Especially on random weekdays when there aren't many people and you can just go like 'One more time' and they'll fire of the rollercoaster for a second round XD

@M.A.R. yes. you're welcome
XD

I guess that's a good thing too: Corona makes it so that theme parks can open, but with a limit to the amount of visitors. I never understood why they would make waiting areas hours long, why not limit the amount of people entering (I know, I know... moneyz).

@Tinkeringbell Here comes the moneeey
But yea
that's something that would make you buy a second-day ticket
aka more profit
so it makes even more sense than just the entrance ticket :P

Yeah, both Walibi and De Efteling also have like places you can rent where you can sleep, I think. Still. I wonder how much people would pay for a park where the number of visitors is limited in a way that allows for waiting times to always be less than 20 minutes.

@Tinkeringbell I mean, there is already priority tickets

7:29 AM
yeah... so basically a theme park with only priority tickets :P

i get it XD

People are probably going to whine though... a lot of people already like to complain that a day to a theme park with e.g. 3 kids is expensive (and it is!)

@Tinkeringbell from a family of five (now everyone pays the adult ticket), yes it's soo expensive
I can't really price what a trip to Disneyland Paris would cost like XD

@CaldeiraG Expensive.

@Tinkeringbell I agree XD

7:34 AM
The first time we went, we had to save up for two years (not going on holiday the first year so we could go the second)
At that point, I think only I might've needed an adult ticket, my brothers were still baby/infant
The second time I don't actually know, I think mom saved up over a period of 3/4 years, but without the regimen we had the first time...
Mostly because she knew she wanted to take my youngest brother again when he was 8/9 so he'd have some memories.
Last time we paid ourselves (for me and two brothers, parents stayed home) and I think I emptied an entire paycheck into that trip... 4 nights/5 days and a bus trip.

:o
Well i hope you had fun XD

Yeah, except for a minor fight somewhere along the second day it mostly went fine ;)

good :)
Someday i would like to travel alone around Europe but yeaaaa

But if you don't have a small kid with you, I recommend no more than 2 nights/3 days: We saw so many rides more than 10 times XD

fun! /s
:p
Wi-Fi at home now sucks for some reason and restarting router doesn't do much; calling ISP says that they're not accepting calls and they would call back in 24/48 hours, didn't happen
And they always come with the excuse that they can't guarantee wifi speeds
I mean, if your phone is literally on the side of the router and you're getting half of the speed that is supposed to, I see that as a big issue
Maybe I should just buy a decent router because cable network is absolutely fine

Ael
8:02 AM
Hey there people, long time not talk :)

\o

Ael
Though, I am sorry to tell you that I only log in here because I have a (weird?) question that needs internet people knowledge to be answered ^^
Nice avatar @Mithical :)

thanks

Ael
Here is the question: Any idea who is this person?

Context?

Ael
8:06 AM
Someone I know is using this as an avatar and, knowing them, I fear it's a right-wing youtuber or something like that

reverse image search didn't turn up anything
This a person you know IRL?

Ael
Yeah, I know the person using this avatar IRL (even if I wish I didn't)
But I'm not really in speaking term with them, so I can't really ask them "where does this avatar come from?"

okay so that i guess that rules out it actually being them

Ael
Yeap, definitively not them

@Ael No worries. Still taking care of yourself? I'm sorry to say I don't know that one either :(

Ael
8:13 AM
@Tinkeringbell Still taking care :)

good :)

Ael
And I guess if neither of you knows who this person is, it's kind of good news? Like, at least it's not some well known "bad person"
@Tinkeringbell And how are you?

@Ael I'm doing fine :) Though at this time the internet sometimes becomes a bit much even for me ;)

Ael
I can definitively understand that

Ael
8:30 AM
<3

8:53 AM
music.stackexchange.com/questions/100375/… < Neither, be mindful of your neighbors that are also stuck at home!

9:07 AM
@Tinkeringbell Piano with headset?
Is that a thing?

Oh, that may be yeah.
Our neighbor has a little organ that can do exactly that, apparently.

I don't want neighbors hearing my games too XD

user435118
@Tinkeringbell I've recently been looking at a few questions on IPS and noticed that quite a few of them were opinion based. Would you say IPS has 'looser'/'easier' policy on opinion based questions?

especially my neighbor upstairs that is annoyed at every single sound because of the baby

user435118
@CaldeiraG My neighbours are reallly quiet, no sound at all. I'm the only one who makes noise in my block :)

9:16 AM
Anything on IPS is going to lean towards opinion based really quick, the real question is whether questions would be primarily opinion based or can also be answered with e.g. experience.
But yeah, most of our questions lately aren't stellar. If anyone has ideas on how to improve that, I'm listening :)
(besides closing, downvoting and commenting)

user435118
I would actually do the oppossite, don't downvote and close. Give the OP a chance especially if it's their first SE experience

@CaldeiraG electric I think

@JourneymanGeek good then
Electronic drums could also do if you're into them so there's a lot of stuff you could try :P

9:32 AM
@Daniil Eh, that has other problems: Answers are one of them. IPS is a bit of a chicken-egg problem that way. We can downvote + close and then the question will at least be roomba'd when never improved... or we can leave it open and let it gather answers, and we'll have a bunch of broken windows and will only attract more of the same.
Besides, accepted answers or upvoted answers stop the roomba :(
Both of which... happen too regularly.
So while I would say 'I'd love to do that', it's basically impossible if we want a quality site.

user435118
9:45 AM
Offtopic but I'm very impressed by this Area 51 proposal: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/124271/zilliqa

user435118
68 followes and 21 q's with a score of 10 in 5 days

Some of the high voted questions are not very promising, though.

Ah, more blockchain :D

user435118
10:01 AM
I don't like blockchain, I do have a Ubuntu VM so I may try to mine some Zilliqa on there to at least give it a chance

I really, really wish I had put some of my savings in bitcoin when I learned about it back in uni though... I could've earned crazy money!

user435118
You can still put your savings there - it is still going up

@Daniil Heh, perhaps. But it would've been so much better if I had done that when it just breeched the 10 dollar back in '11, or even when it breached a 100 in '13 XD
Right now, I'm keeping my savings for buying furniture and flooring ;)

user435118
True

user435118
You rennovating/moving in somehwere?

10:17 AM
Moving, to an apartment now being built :)

i'd advise not moving in till it's completed, but you do you
:P

user435118
I hate Ubuntu. It crashed and made me do a restart

What version?

user435118
@Mithical Good advice :P

Oh, I see you were elected. Congrats!

user435118
10:23 AM
Thanks :)

have you beaten Riker for youngest mod at time of appointment / election (who beat me)?

user435118
@Mithical Just checking...

user435118
How old was Riker?

young 14

user435118
No, I didn't beat Riker

user435118
10:24 AM
And you were?

14 and a half

user435118
And I didn't beat you either :)

@Daniil I do not hate Linux or Ubuntu, I just wished everything was as simple as Windows

@Daniil For some reason I was under the impression that you were younger than you actually are, huh.

I find myself on AskUbuntu most of the time for simple stuff

10:27 AM
I recently moved from Ubuntu 16.04 to 19.10 (thanks to switching devices) and I have to say I preferred 16.04.

user435118

Aye, yeah - I remembered that you had been deleted for being underage and that's about it.

user435118
Yeah, Ubuntu usually crashes

user435118
Maybe I didn't allocate it enough RAM...

user435118
Is 2048 MB base memory enough?

user435118
10:32 AM
@Mithical Um... Is there anyway to check the version without booting? :)

Settings > info

user435118
I'm using Oracle VM...

ah, then I don't know how to check with a VM

user435118
I have a old computer where I could install Ubuntu - not sure if the computer's spec's are good enough though

user435118
> Intel Celeron N3060 Dual Core CPU. The GPU is 1.6GHz Integrated Intel Graphics with video controller drivers. The internal RAM is 4GB DDR3L while the internal hard disk is 500GB.

user435118
10:36 AM
I mainly use my Mac but I prefer to keep macOS on it

user435118
I have to go back to school soon after 2/3 months at home, I liked doing school work at home :(

should be good for linux mint
Lubuntu is also an option
but you can run pretty much anything on Linux

user435118
Will it run Ubuntu?

Lubuntu's GUI is fairly awful IMO
I used it for a week and gave up

yea i guess, that cpu is used on cheap laptops ~300€ (most recent one is the N4000)
should run fine

user435118
10:45 AM
So you recommend Mint?

it runs windows reasonably well
@Daniil i used it on a Pentium M 745 with 2gb of ram
it ran smoothly

user435118
It's running Windows rn, but it's quite slow even after a factory reset

user435118
@Tinkeringbell How long till completion?

@Daniil You mean a full format? or just the reset this pc button?
@Mithical Agreed, it's nontheless one of the most lightweight Ubuntu based distros

user435118
@CaldeiraG I backed up all the files to a hard drive, and cleared everything and restored from the hard drive

10:47 AM
@Daniil No one knows... Guesstimates are early 2021

@Daniil Ah i see

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Still in The Netherlands?

quora agrees on Linux
or a ssd lol :P

user435118
I'll probably just install Linux, will it preserve Windows files as I have MS Office apps there which I can't re-install?

user435118
Can you even run MS Office apps on Linux? (the 2007 version)

10:57 AM
@Daniil Yep! A few streets away from my parents, where I'm at now ;)

user435118
Are you near Amsterdam or somewhere else? I've been to Amsterdam before - I really liked it

I'm on the other side of the country from Amsterdam ;)
Which is also why I'm able to pay for a house of my own XD

user435118
Oh ok :)

user435118
Are houses expensive there?

Amsterdam? yes.
Over here? Still expensive for my taste, but way less bad than Amsterdam.

user435118
11:01 AM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I thought it would be

I'm getting a single bedroom, living+kitchen combined, apartment. It's costing 189k to build

user435118
That's quite cheap

That's just bare bones, I still need to add flooring, bathroom, kitchen counter/cabinets...

user435118
You buy a house where I am, it's 400k

House vs. apartment is a huge difference here too :)

user435118
11:02 AM
What's the difference?

Houses often have more than 1 level and more than 1 bedroom. Also, you'll often find they have separate spaces for the toilet and the shower/bath (I'm getting them combined in one bathroom)

user435118
So you mean a studio flat?

And you won't have upstairs neighbors in a house ;)
(or downstairs ones)
@Daniil I think studio flats are still 1 level only?
I'm not sure.. In my mind, a house is much grander than what I'm getting XD

user435118
Yeah, it's one level

user435118
Do you know what a flat is?

11:09 AM
we have a Dutch word "flatgebouw" which is basically a building which has many apartments ;)
a 'studentenflat' may also come with shared kitchen and sanitary spaces + single bedrooms for students to rent.

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I've heard of that, we have them in the UK as well

user435118
So in the photo, you're not getting something similar to the houses around?

user435118
Is it me or was there just a UI change on the review page:

user435118

user435118
Especially the buttons in the top-right corner, the oval circle and the view your complete review history

11:16 AM
@Daniil Actually, there's another block of 6 apartments in the photo, the ones with the white windows on the roof, somewhere at the top in the center? I'm getting one on ground floor level though.

user435118
Yes, I see it. Is it quite a rural area or a bit urban?

@Daniil With Wine yea?

user435118
@CaldeiraG Can the files be moved from Windows to Linux or do I need to backup to my hard drive and restore from their?

user435118
Also any version of mint you specifically recommend?

@Daniil you can dual-boot it
@Daniil you mean edition? it only changes the GUI
I used mate on my older pc but Xfce looks nice

user435118
11:23 AM
What's the difference between Mate etc.?

user435118
So I can run Windows and Mint side-by-side?

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Was there a UI change? ^^^^^

I really don't know.
TL or the Tavern are probably good places to ask :)

user435118
Will do

user435118
11:41 AM
@Tinkeringbell I think you might have missed my question above... :)

user435118
> Yes, I see it. Is it quite a rural area or a bit urban?

Ehh, a bit urban :)
A bit rural too

user435118
Is it like a town or a village?

There's a forest nearby, but also shops.
village

user435118
I'm in a very urban town, people everywhere

user435118
11:42 AM
The town doesn't want to be called a city even though it legally qualifies to be called one

sometimes, being a city has its downsides ;)
(I'm going to try and get some work done now, ttyl!)

user435118
Bye :)

12:01 PM
@Daniil different graphic interface aka GUI, personal preference
@Daniil just like you can on Ubuntu

user435118
So how do I switch between them?

Linux will install a new bootloader called GRUB, on there you can boot to either Windows or Ubuntu
it will look something like this

user435118
Is that installed by default or a specific installation is needed?

default

user435118
I'll try this out on the weekend

12:06 PM
further configuration may be needed if the installer doesn't detect the windows partition out of the box
it's fairly easy to configure it

user435118
Thanks for the help :)

you're welcome :)
hit me up on discord or some folks from Root Access could help you too if you need help

user435118
Not the Linux chat room?

They could also help ye
i'm just a regular user of SU

user435118
I'll probably need quite a bit of help ;)

Ael
12:09 PM
1 message moved to Trash

user435118
@Ael Um... why?

user435118
Just wondering :)

that person has similar traces to my face but that's not me either :P

Ael
@Daniil Privacy? I don't want it to be arround forever

@Daniil ;p

user435118
12:11 PM
True, I could delete it, not sure if that's necessary though

Honestly i can't come up with some ideas of what to do with a linux machine that I can't do on windows

Ael
@Daniil I wouldn't be against it. It can't do any harm to delete and you can never be too careful

I once had windows and ubuntu dual-booted but ubuntu i was just browsing there, all my gaming relies on windows

Ael
@CaldeiraG With linux: don't catch virus :p

:P
you're not wrong

user435118
12:14 PM
@Ael Deleted and I purged the history

Ael
Thanks :D

ay
:)
I don't know how the parents still think Maddie is alive but atleast they need a closure and I totally get it
The problem is that the parents neglected their childs by leaving them alone, unsupervised

Ael
@Tinkeringbell I have been away for a while now, but I think the issue is with the numbers. Fewer questions = fewer good questions. And I'm thinking that the less question part is due to lockdown (which equals less social interaction). So, really, all you have to do is to find a vaccine/cure already :p

@Ael I wish there was! For now, I'm still trying to do my part (keeping distance, not going out if not necessary...) Most people here seem to be trying to get a second wave started though :(

user435118
12:30 PM
@Tinkeringbell Same, I also use my computer's CPU to process folding proteins to find a vaccine, apparently it is supposed to help

I actually would've expected more questions about not letting problems escalate now that everyone is in the same spaces so often... but I guess that's not something you ask on the internet :P

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, things are kind of the same in France. I think people are just like "the government said it was ok" and don't really realize the consequence of what they are doing
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I would have expected that too. But people are lock with people they know, so maybe they already know the answers?

Maybe, yeah :)
But if that's the case, the amount of articles written on how to survive spending time together surprises me :P

Ael
Not false :p

Hahaha :D

Ael
12:39 PM
In other news, I just saw the most spectacular version of spaghetti code I could ever imagine. The function (not a class) is 1900 lines long and, according to our code quality analyzer, it has a Cognitive Complexity of 924. (A Cognitive Complexity of 10 is fine, 20 is a bit too much, 50 is a "you should definitively refactor that")

O.o
I wouldn't even try to eat that.

@Ael Ooh, I've seen code like that before. It's scary
What does that function do (maybe just tell us what it's supposed to do and not all of the things it does)

Ael
@Rainbacon I have no idea, but it has to do with money stuff

@Ael In that case, put in another line that wires 10 percent into your own bank account and then wait how long it takes them to find out! :P
#BadAdvice

Ael
xD
@Rainbacon It's not just scary, it looks like a nightmare. I read it and at first I was like "well, everything seems fine and pretty reasonable". But then I saw the if, in the if, in the for, in the for, in the if, in the if and I finally understood why the complexity was so high x)

12:50 PM
Yikes
I think I've decided at this point in my career that there's no such thing as good code in the business world.
The only way to write good code is to do it without deadlines

Ael
@Rainbacon IMO, there is "not so bad code" and "absolutely terrible code" (and everything in between). But yeah, this thing about deadlines is very true

1:15 PM
I would actually say the thing I'm working on right now isn't just 'not so bad', it's actually 'pretty ok'

With software, as with any other project, there are three metrics you can look at: how fast it's done, how well it's done, and how cheap it's done. You only get to optimize for two of the three, and almost without fail, how well it's done is the option that gets sacrificed

Ael
@Rainbacon I was going to say "it depends on what sector you are working on" but that's not even true. In my previous job, data were far more sensitive than in my current one and yet, in my current job, quality is far more appreciated than in my previous one. But, to be fair, I now work in an industry where what makes the difference between competitors is quality, not price (because everyone has the same price). Whereas I use to work in a company were clients chose us based on price

1 hour later…
2:39 PM
I find it funny that people are already meeting friends and stuff while the cases are rising again over here and I'm very happy to stay home and not to hangout with other people IRL xD
I guess I was already in quarantine before all of this :p

@CaldeiraG Cue Zombieland
> I avoided other people like they were zombies...even before they were zombies.
