@EmC SD watches SE.com's real-time tab, which are the most recently active questions. Anything that bumps a post will make it appear there.
But if a question's already been analyzed and then a grace period spam edit is made, I don't think SD would catch that

shhh don't tell the spammers :p

Morning ;)

6:09 AM
yawns it is technically morning here as well :p
how's the day shaping up?

Mine is looking good. Little to no meetings which means I might actually get the coding part of my story done this sprint (the testing will have to wait, I'm afraid).

no meetings is nice :)
I've been neglecting writing tests too... I feel bad about it, but it's a huge pain to even run tests remotely and I would rather just get my feature code done than spend time wrangling with our test infrastructure

6:25 AM
Oof, yeah... but please tell me you're not up at 2am again writing code?

>__>

Bad Em XD
Our testing infrastructure is finally getting somewhere: we're at least now writing unit tests for most stuff.

I told my team I was almost done getting my code to work and they basically set a deadline for deciding whether or not to scrap my entire feature this week :( and our weekly team meeting is in the afternoon
but of course now I am trying to send a broadcast using basically identical code to a different broadcast and .. this one is not working ... for some reason, which is the last piece I need before I can upload for review

Okay. While it's never fun to get your feature scrapped... perhaps having it scrapped is better than having it semi-work with 10 hacks and a life-time of it falling apart with every other change you make? ;)
(no clue what your code looks like rn, but it's sounding like your programming the impossible)

hahah. I mean that is true, just kind of depressing

6:38 AM
I know :( But that's the way a coworker sold it to me when I got stuck doing a semi-impossible thing... And I really liked that way of thought. We should've used it in this project a little more too ;)

a lot of the problems I think are poor planning, deciding too late what we wanted to do, should've added more engineers earlier.. but too late for that :p

Oof, yeah... that also sounds frustrating.

Q: Vibing a babe that one has never met but have the contact

DenoHow do I vibe a babe I have never met but just gotten the contact from a friend

12:00 PM
@ankii lots
shipping now is really slow

12:21 PM
@Tinkeringbell Yikes, that's a long time with no holidays. How many holidays to you get per year?

12:39 PM
Ehhmm... Christmas, second day of Christmas, New Year's Day, Second day of Easter, King's Day, Ascension Day, Second day of Pentecost.

We get 2 'extra' days from our boss: One is always on 'third day of Christmas' (December 27th). The other can be used either on Good Friday or the day after Ascension Day, to make a long weekend.
But I do have 28 days of PTO I can take each year ;)

Ah ok. You get the same number of holiday days as me, they are just spaced differently. I get 1 day for Christmas, 2 days for New Year's, Martin Luther King day, Memorial day, Independence day, Labor day, and 2 days for Thanksgiving. I also have technically unlimited PTO, but they recommend taking about 20 days of it
Also for context: MLK day is in Feb, Memorial day was last Monday, Independence day is July 4, Labor day is in Sept, and Thanksgiving is in Nov
Also, not every company in the US takes the same holidays. I believe there are six mandated holidays, and 3 that are optional (President's day, MLK day, and Good Friday/day after Easter)

Those are spread out a lot more evenly than the Christian holidays :) Over here, it's easer, 40 days after that ascension day then 10 days later Pentecost.
King's day is usually shortly after Easter

Yeah, although they still end up kind of bunched. At my last job we didn't get MLK day but instead got 2 days for Christmas, so I had 6 of my 9 holidays between like Nov 20 and Jan 1
Also, it's rather ironic that we have a federal holiday to celebrate Martin Luther King, but then, * gestures wildly * all this happens

12:55 PM
@Rainbacon Ooof. That's also kind of a bad time to have holidays bunched, I think.. (I like mine when there's more daylight out)

@JourneymanGeek yep

I usually spend anywhere from 5-8 days of PTO on getting two full weeks off around Christmas/New Year's, and then I take another 3 weeks in summer.

even shipping from the UK is taking a while here

Which means I have about 5 days left each year XD

That's nice. I also spend a lot of PTO around Christmas to get a large bunch off. And then I don't take enough time off the rest of the year

1:00 PM
@CaldeiraG strangely stuff I ordered later is turning up first

@JourneymanGeek good xD

@Rainbacon Managers here make sure you do. Or you'll get complaints about unbooked holiday leave until you book it XD

@Tinkeringbell That sounds nice. My managers have always encouraged me to take PTO, but they've never gone out of their way to make me

Trust me, it's highly annoying... I'm a last minute planner: I want to make sure my parents aren't home and then I'll book. That'll probably change next year, but until then it's annoying that I still don't know when in September they'll be gone so I can book my days off accordingly.

@CaldeiraG no, since I have 6 batteries and no flashlights

1:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek :(

1:37 PM
Oh and a sweet charger 😁

1:58 PM
@JourneymanGeek you in Singapore, that's one of their manufacturing hubs too, right ? (wikipedia says so)
@CaldeiraG 's comment encourages me.
4500 INR shipping for a 300 INR cable is too high xd
I'll have to make a PayPal account too (I hope it accepts non-international debit cards)

Q: Did Mark Zuckerberg create a website to rank his female classmates?

SSimon According to this highly viral and popular tweet from democracy diva, Mark Zuckerberg created a website to rank his classmates by their appearance, however, I haven't found any evidence to substantiate that claims.

@SSimon - The original version of the question asked whether Zuckerberg created a website to rank his female classmates, which he did. That is a fact. That the evolution of that website led directly to Facebook is also a fact. Asking whether Facebook led to the destruction of democracy is both opinion-based and is an ongoing current event, making that question doubly off-topic for this site. If that doubly off-topic is the direction you insist on proceeding then there is no choice but to close this question. The more mundane question regarding the origins of Facebook is on topic. You choose. — David Hammen 2 days ago
So, someone edited the question title and now it's on HNQ
how coincidental
someone aka OP
i didn't realize it

@CaldeiraG At least the list wasn't secret :P

6:31 PM
well, my project is not cancelled.......... yet. we're having a meeting on Friday to talk about it again :/

That's something, right?

yeah, I did get my code to work again at least
haven't gotten review comments back yet though

7:28 PM
It can only get better ;)
(at least, if you have someone that reviews fairly :P)

7:50 PM
@Tinkeringbell Imagine it being like movie reviews "Bland villain, boring screenplay, and distinct inability to pull off the bravado the bar scene entails, this movie is such glorified garbage that I would need a detergent to unsee itβ€”0.5/100"

8:00 PM
@M.A.R. I mean, I've had anything from 'This can't work' when it clearly does to 'I always preferred X but your way looks much neater!'
Some people are made to review code, others not ;)

@Tinkeringbell Getting a downvote with no comment, how's that for a review
Goes to rant on meta.company

@M.A.R. noooo
my reviewers are fair but one of them is a little opinionated and very thorough, so I'm kind of bracing myself for comments like "this should be refactored and put in a different class"
which he already did on the WIP I shared, sooo fingers crossed my updates were satisfactory :p
@Tinkeringbell the second type of comment is great :D

@EmC Yep, that really cheered me up! :)
Refactoring stuff into another class is almost always good :)
Though some people really overdo it, if you ask me ;)

Q: Roommate left for a long time and suddenly returned. Bathroom was messy on day he got back and he complained to landlord

abc_meI feel like it's too late to recover the situation at this point but am wondering what I could've done differently to avoid this conflict. I share a bathroom with a roommate in a house. Without telling anyone he left for 3 months. I think it was related to COVID. I asked the landlord what happe...
