5:36 AM
@ExtrovertedMainMan oof
It would be a nice question to attempt though

5:55 AM
good morning

6:31 AM
Afternoon

morning!

6:59 AM
our chancellor gave a speech this morning to cool any hopes of lifting the restrictions soon
apparently we're looking at months rather then weeks

how she plans on enforcing this when the first really nice weather weekend comes along is beyond me

Over here they keep saying there's a cautious sign the number of hospitalizations may be flattening, and 'the end of the week' should prove it... that's today or tomorrow, I guess.

The next communications on our restrictions will be early next week, I think.
@Magisch You can't, not really... we've had that last weekend too, and people visited the beaches en masse.

guess when that happens its general curfew time
italy style

So they got scolded on live tv by the prime minister and the minister of safety and justice... And now we can fine people...
I'm wondering though... over here they're saying that while the numbers in Germany are high, the dead count is relatively low... If that's true, then why are they keeping the restrictions this long? :/
How bad is the hospital situation there?

7:04 AM
we're seeing 20-25% growth of infection numbers per day
if you project that outwards, without going down significantly to at most 3-5% growth per day, we're looking at a situation exactly as bad as in italy in less then 3 weeks

the US is learning that lession right now

Are hospitalizations climbing just as fast?

yes

7:06 AM
a bit faster then confirmed cases even, because remember test data lags by ~2 days

@Magisch They say that about the number of dead people here, not the tests... Tests are mostly same-day, from what I gather.

the logistics of do the test -> send to lab -> report to health ministry -> show up in official numbers is around 2 days

Ah. I should start figuring out of that's the same here...

it's either gonna be general curfew or pandemonium or both

:/ That's too bad. For all the news articles over here saying that we can still learn from China, we seem to have one thing going: That most people here have enough common sense to keep to the rules, without needing the threat of a totalitarian government.
I think just the threat of curfews or strict lockdowns make people realize that they should.

7:11 AM
I really dont think they will

*most people

as soon as it becomes warm people will go out and mingle, and teenagers will want to party and will do so, and there will be loads of pressure on governments to suspend restrictions
and then some might, and we're back to explosive growth again

do you think my asessment is incorrect?
we had to have police step in to prevent people from doing coronaparties with the express intent of infecting old people, and social media networks had to remove hashtags for that. Do you think people as a whole are compassionate enough to accept restrictions in their free time?

@Magisch I don't know. I mostly think it might be a tad pessimistic, especially the part about some governments giving in to pressure and lifting restrictions instead of applying them more rigorously... The bit about parties is bad enough though, I haven't heard any stories of those over here.
So people as a whole? There's always going to be assholes. Most people? Probably.
They'll accept them. They might grumble about it, a lot... but in the end...

7:54 AM
Morning!

I'll be a tiny bit politically cynical but people that have the most pressure on governments are people that vote. Not-so-young workers and retired workers mostly. Not the young party-happy. Based on recent polls on fear from COVID I'd not expect the restrictions to lift just because the weather is nice. And here the numbers in France are getting catastrophic despite restriction.

We're getting there too. Over 6k new cases yesterday
a lot of people finding out for the first time just what an exponential function means

8:10 AM
@Tinkeringbell slightly cynically?
Dead people take up less resources than long term sick ones

There's a point that many people are missing but the government isn't. Even if only 20% of the hospitalized people die, most of them will have permanent lung tissue scarring
if you had to be tubed the long term damage is even more severe. The result is reduced quality of life, reduced fitness, more susceptibility to other severe illness and more

@JourneymanGeek That's true... I know this country has pretty open conversations about euthanasia, palliative care, quality of life, and fullfilled lives. So a lot of the dead here were already ill and didn't go to hospital, or at least not to intensive care... if you die there, you die alone.

Sick people can also spread.

So doctors are already having conversations with people like 'do you really want this' (including the lung damage Mag mentions)

In italy most victims of the pandemic die on a hospital hallway or after being sent home slowly drowning on dry land gasping for air
it's a horrific process

8:13 AM
AND y'all have not had to deal with something like this for... I donno
a century?
This is far worse than SARS et al were but...

@JourneymanGeek I think Spanish Flu was the last real bad one yeah, if we discount other things like polio and measles.

At least we had that to give an idea of what to do
@Tinkeringbell We've been dealing with small outbreaks over the last decade or two of pretty nasty viruses of that ilk

I read an account of a young person who had to be tubed and survived

(and even we're kinda getting caught by some things - most of our cases are imported)

what he described was soul crushing and also he'll need to carry around oxygen for the rest of his life. The unusually deep and severe pneumonia meant they had to ventilate him at high pressure, which permanently severely deteriorated his lung function even after he recovered.

8:20 AM
@Magisch Yep, they're warning for an increase in lungs needed for transplants and a new lung disease (temporarily named 'COLD') over here too :/
@JourneymanGeek Given today's knowledge economy, I'd doubt no one over here knew how it's handled in other places...

@Tinkeringbell Knowing - sure. But we had a lot of the "hardware" and facilities in place for a smaller one
We're doing better cause we blew it a few smaller times and it so happens those mistakes meant we already had plans for overflow for hospitals and built more facilities for unrelated reasons, and had food stocks in case of other disasters and...
We probably have N95 mask stocks cause of the haze.

a lot of it is also immediacy
a lot of people here were super unimpressed with any prevention measures because they never had a sense of what a real pandemic means or does

But if you didn't have your neighbours set their country on fire every year, had to deal with SARS, had to fix overcrowded hospitals....
@Magisch honestly? I lived through 3-4 of these
and I did not expect stuff to get this bad

nobody did
if I told you in november that by march a global pandemic would bring the world and its economy to its knees you would have called me crazy, rightfully

9:07 AM
Morning!

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. If 'we' means Singapore, sure.
@avazula Hey you!
How are you today?

@Tinkeringbell Great! Our factories reopened, we're ready to build hundreds of devices. Patients should be equipped within the next weeks :)
You?
@Magisch If the economy of every country collapses doesn't that mean we all can great a fresh start? :p

Pretty relaxing right now: I just gave my first demo (usually we let a more experienced coworker do it but he's leaving so it's my job now, I guess?) and it went well, so now I'm listening to the rest of the meeting and crocheting ;)

@Tinkeringbell oh I've been dying to knit during meetings too but never dared ahah

Just do it!
I find it helps a lot, like I would normally just doodle stuff but crochet is nice too

9:10 AM
@avazula Nah that means that the crumbs will be sold off to people who held on to cash before the crisis and we'll reach a new, even more precedented level of inequality

:D

whatever happens the result will be rich people get richer while everyone else loses out

Do pick something that doesn't require counting or complicated stitches though ;)

@Magisch Same ol' song then ... I was joking but I'm afraid it's true, yes

(yes I'm fun at parties)

9:11 AM
haha
@Tinkeringbell I'm on a dead-simple jacket right now, only hard thing is to remember to switch colors

I'm doing that scarf I shared before... I've done so many rows the pattern is muscle memory by now ;)

oh right, I remember that
I'm doing this one but in black with stripes

With the same yarn? It looks so soft!

Nope, I don't have such kind sadly :( but I'm eager to do it again with this yarn!

:D I want to see both, when they're finished ;) And also when they're in progress!

9:16 AM
:pressure:

Ah, if you don't like that, I'm sorry!

no worries :p
I'm only at the beginning

Oh but it looks nice! The colours work well together :)

I was afraid by the grey one! I started it in the evening and it didn't look so different from the black
But it renders better by daylight :)

It looks really nice! :)
Evenings are really bad for picking colours. I've started projects in the evening that I just frogged the next day...
So now I at least try to remember to pick the colours in daylight :P

9:20 AM
haha, I get that :)
I have to be careful though, I have so many ongoing projects

I have the scarf, a blanket to finish and a blanket to fix. But those are all big ones, I like to mix in a smaller one from time to time ;)
But yeah... there were times when I had 10 things and none were finished...
What else do you have that's still ongoing?

Like ...
- reusable paper towels -> 2
- Brazilian bracelets -> 1
- crochet project (beehive blanket) -> 1
- knitting project -> 1 (this one)

Good grief there's crafting stuff all over my house o_o

right? :p
I'm terrible at finishing stuff.

Inkle loom with half finished band, a scrapbook I'll never finish, and some tatting should be added to my list too then :P
And I have been thinking about starting some macrame again to keep busy :P

9:24 AM
@Tinkeringbell macrame must be great for WFH meetings

I guess :P I was thinking of doing something more complicated than a bracelet, and I haven't done it for a long while... So perhaps the meetings I should stick to crochet.

Woah... those are very even!
Nice!

Here's my recently finished ones and the one that's in progress. I have to make another one for my mother's birthday

I love the colours of the in progress one ;)

9:26 AM
@Tinkeringbell hehe :p I'm sick of people dismissing me being LGBT so I need a reminder that I'm valid <3

Aww <3
I just like rainbows :P

I need to go get my paper towel to show you!
me too :D

@avazula Yeah, I'm curious... how's that different from a dishcloth? ;)

@avazula my sisters do those bracelets
:)

Do you have rolls of wiping paper? That's supposed to replace them

9:33 AM
We do have rolls, yes. We mostly use them to wipe e.g. grease out of pans. If we have a spill on the counter, we use a dishcloth. They mostly look like those too ;)

I wanted to sew snap-fasteners on them but then my grandma told me I would risk scratching the surface while wiping so I gave up on the idea

Grandma's are always right :P

Now I need to crochet a lil' basket to dispose them in rolls :D
but I don't have a thick enough yarn rn :(
so the project remains unfinished

@avazula You could do double strands if you have a lot of not quite thick enough yarn ;)

I don't dare ordering online these days ... Seems like the warehouse workers are having a hard time keeping up with the covid-related massive amount of orders?
@Tinkeringbell Good idea! But I'm unsure it'll be thick enough, still? Thickest I have is 4.5 :/

9:37 AM
@avazula I have a few shops that specialize in yarn only... ordering there should be fine :P

I was aiming for a 10 or 11

Yeah, that would get you at most a 9 :/

@Tinkeringbell I didn't mention them but I got an email from the post office yesterday saying they'd only work 3 days a week now instead of 6 because of the pandemic (they don't have the means to protect themselves I guess). So while ordering from specialized shops would solve the warehouse issue (yay :) ), it wouldn't for the delivery one :/
So yeah, I'll wait :D

@avazula Deliveries here are 'contactless'. They ring the bell, put the package on the ground, step back... and watch you pick it up. Then they get to sign for delivery.
My brother had a package arrive that way yesterday.

@Tinkeringbell well they do that too in here now, or they put it in the mailbox ... But idk, apparently they're not equipped to work in good conditions so :/

9:40 AM
@avazula :(

I've been waiting for a package that was supposed to arrive on Tuesday (I ordered before I got their email), it's still not here ...

Well, waiting won't hurt, go finish your ufo's :P

@Tinkeringbell ufos? what's ufo in my crafting? :p

un-finished objects :P

Aaaaaaaaaah
Picture the museum owl saying "hoo hoo"

9:42 AM
Like that :P
The bottom says 'space for unfinished objects' :P

that's so cool

Came with the UFO I crocheted... The one that plays the tune of X Files :D

dope!

Yep. But the meeting is over so I should get some work done now... ( I kinda want to finish ASAP so I can quit a little early today :P)

2h30m until I'm done with work for the day

9:45 AM
heh

shift work sucks I had to get up at 4 am

(All I've done is game, and people assume I have nothing to do so I keep getting asked to do things like move a meter tall pile of newspaper downstairs...)

@JourneymanGeek Well basically, you don't have anything to do, except game? :P
@Magisch Yeah, that sucks :( Any chance that the shifts may shift at some point, so you get the later one?

next week
which is not that great
14.45 - 23.00
coming home at 11.30 pm like a scrub :(

I'm now debugging too :p but the day will be long, I'm in support for an audit that finishes around 7.30 - 8.00PM

9:53 AM
Uh, MSE considers my C# app is a virus :o

ahahah

specifically this one
apparently a database cloning app is avoiding being detected :P
it's not too different from me
🙈
Actually, nevermind, Windows Defender changed his mind

@Tinkeringbell Totally cleaned up my room (under duress)....
@CaldeiraG Of course Meta does :D
Programming questions belong on SO :D

10:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek :D Microsoft Security Essentials i mean xD

1 hour later…
11:51 AM
@avazula that isnt macos, is it ?
Hi too! how are you?

looks like ubuntu
Well gnome anyway

Linux would be my bet
But I see excel?
on the side

lol
more likely mac then

Yea
Dunno how much customization can be done on macOS

never had such strip at the bottom
dock to the sides is fine & I can see iterm too

12:31 PM
Cases: 4268 (+764) / Deaths: 76 (+16) :(
it's climbing up fast :( boris johnson also has coronavirus

So do a lot more celebs... why does johnson in particular get a mention today? :P

yeah, I care for Prince Charles only
/s

What about the singer of Rammstein?

knowing someone is still a pre-req
"Genres
Neue Deutsche Härte industrial metal electro-industrial hard rock"
this is new to me
@CaldeiraG en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… see the graph just above it (new cases)
seems to have stalled
and it's day 3/21

1:00 PM
@ankii that's an interesting definition of "stalled"

what'd you call it
I check it everyday and it's a relief nonetheless

Very relieving colors
I don't like to be the voice of doom but it'd be 600000 cases worldwide by this time tomorrow

@M.A.R. Nah, there aren't that many tests /s

@Tinkeringbell Hey, Boris caught it, you never know
gasp of relief
@Tinkeringbell how's the Netherlands doing?

@M.A.R. I'm trying to see if the newest counts are in yet.

1:12 PM
Was flattening an audience reaction, or really visible in the charts?

They aren't.
I'll let you know.
For now the flattening was mostly a 'prediction' based on 'positive signs' made by our national help department... and it was made based on the number of people that need hospitalization/intensive care, not new infections/deaths

They crucified Jesus on a positive sign. Just sayin'

Our charts look like Earthquake waves
We have such diligent authorities
Let's talk about something else
I watched Train to Busan recently
Nice movie. Few plotholes and unnecessary dramatizations, but a good zombie movie, definitely

@Tinkeringbell because the UK was too late in applying measures for the virus + certainly more known that the singer of Rammstein :P

1:17 PM
I notice Asian movies and dialog tend to be more frank about the beliefs of that people or culture

Cases: 8603 (+1172), Hospitalized: 2500 (+349), Dead 546 (+112). According the national health department site, these numbers are lower than they would've been without preventive measures, if this line continues we can conclude in a few days that they worked.

@Tinkeringbell that's good

Hollywood whitewashes every subject. And if they want to make the conversation "dirty" and "homely", it'd just contain F-words
@Tinkeringbell Duh. Human societies have been known to take mildly effective preventive measures towards epidemic events for quite a few centuries now

@M.A.R. And if they do hire an Egyptian actor to play an Egyptian Pharao, they get accused of whitewashing still so fixing it isn't worth the effort for them :P

Have you seen "Parasite"?

1:19 PM
@M.A.R. Nope.
But I can imagine what kind of movie it is.

You should
@Tinkeringbell Probably not, since it's not really any kind of movie

It's the Oscar winning one, right? The one with a family parasiting of another family? They call it taxes over here...

There's lots and lots of commentary in it
@Tinkeringbell Haha, well, you need to see it to see what I mean
It's a fresh break from Hollywood's feigned reality

@M.A.R. Pretty good movie

@CaldeiraG Damn straight
Let me provide an example
What does the "normal" South Korean family talk about? Politics, often enough, and North Korea, often enough
You have an entire scene of a character giving an impression of a North Korean news anchor
It feels real. You don't have to approve of the stance, you don't have to approve of the impression, but it's what you do too, rather than some perfect Hollywood model brooding about life

1:24 PM
I liked the rock
It was a nice rock

It's not shoving political commentary on your face, mind you
It's not weakly trying to brainwash you into accepting a message

That almost sounds like they managed to actually make a movie that's not a movie but a documentary?

It doesn't reek of two dozen statisticians designing everything for focus groups, if you know what I mean
@Tinkeringbell Oh, it's ultimately just a story

Then it's a movie, and what you see is fake ;)
No matter how well faked, it's still fake. And that idea ruins most movies for me.

But about what matters, not about some pompous singer and her love life

1:27 PM
Do you have any movies you've really enjoyed @Tink?

@Tinkeringbell what movies weren't fake?

USA has surpassed China in terms of total cases.

@M.A.R. Oh, all movies are fake... but @scohe the ones I could enjoy were mostly the ones I watched when I was a kid.
They were probably even more fake I was just too dumb to realize what was wrong with them (like, these things can't talk/move on their own)

Hmm so have you liked any movie you've seen in the last 10 years?

@AJ9 Make America Great Again

1:29 PM
Or tv show ;P

@Tinkeringbell Well, what about "street" movies? About normal people having normal lives?
I'm not talking about a scary killer in the shadows that haunts the family, I mean something like "Boyhood", "Wonder" etc.

@M.A.R. Those aren't interesting, and they're most likely documentaries then.
Unless the person is fake.

@Tinkeringbell do you like the documentaries?

But why would I devote my time to a fake person?
@M.A.R. Some, not all.
I wouldn't watch one about the Kardashians.

@Tinkeringbell wait.. starship troopers wasn't a documentary?

1:32 PM
@Tinkeringbell Because it might say something about yourself, and how you align with the characters' motives and actions shows you more about yourself

@scohe001 Not massively, no. And the ones I did like were more because they either incited good conversation afterwards or were watched with enough popcorn/good friends/booze to make the whole experience more pleasurable.

Because some stories confirm things you suspected but never put into a clear thought
A jillion other reasons.

Mr. Robot is one of the most realistic tv shows about mental illnesses
It's still fake obviously but it feels real

@JourneymanGeek the humans were fake

@M.A.R. That's what philosophy books are for. ;)

1:34 PM
@M.A.R. Aliens then?
:p

@CaldeiraG there's many layers to that joke :D

@Tinkeringbell that sounds like the two biggest reasons that I enjoy movies lol I'm curious though, is it just movies that you feel like this with? Or is it all fiction?

It was a movie based on a book. The director and writer were political opposites so the director read half the book, and... left all the good non political stuff like giant stompy robots out.

@Tinkeringbell but those are boring
Have you tried reading A critique of pure reason?

@JourneymanGeek Ooh I see xD

1:36 PM
@JourneymanGeek Show me an example of a book-to-movie adaptation that was done well that isn't The Princess Bride. I'll wait. ;)

I loved the movie. Then I read the book, and loved that too.
@Mithical does it have to be a movie?
If its a mini series, good omens

@Mithical Movie I don't think so, series there are some

@scohe001 There's some fiction I like reading, but not a lot... for the same reason, yeah.

@Mithical isn't the classic example here LotR?

Packing hours of reading a book into a 1h30 movie doesn't fit well

1:37 PM
My point is, you seem to be ignoring the entertainment aspect of entertainment. That's totally fine; someone that can find joy in doing something else might not need the joy of watching a movie, but there's a difference between Bad Boys 2 and The Dark Knight

I mostly read fiction if I'm lazy and can curl up beneath a blanket... that's the opposite of popcorn and friends, but it makes reading fiction pleasant.

@scohe001 I've never watched the movies, but I've heard, uh, mixed things about it

@Mithical No Country for Old Men
@Mithical TBF, Return of The King is pretty darn awesome

@M.A.R. I'm doing Foucault's Madness and Civilization now.
And I've started 'Utopia for realists' too, since I discussed something related to it at the beginning of this week.

The Fellowship of the Ring is a bit clunky, by the book's standards. So many things are portrayed in a half-assed manner that it's impossible to understand what's going on unless you've already read the books
But, for someone that has, all three are immensely enjoyable
@Tinkeringbell O.O Slowly steps backwards
Philosophy books, like science books, are riddled with terminology. You can grasp the simpler concepts much faster through reading everything but philosophy books

1:40 PM
@M.A.R. Or, you know... you read the definitions they put with the terminology.

But there's something to be said about comprehensive headaches analyses
@Tinkeringbell Witch takes a lot of time

You calling me a witch?

Do you take a lot of time?
Stupid brain

Depends on what I'm doing but for some things, yeah, I take time.

1:57 PM
@ankii It is! Why?

2:45 PM
@avazula what's that strip at the bottom for ?
@M.A.R. I just meant for India.. ofc there's not a 21 days lockdown everywhere

It's SE's chat bottom. My dock is at the right of the screen.

3:00 PM
O.o While I may understand the need to bring money/cheques in... Withdrawing cash when everyone is supposed to use debit cards to minimise contact sounds weird...

3:12 PM
I'm pretty sure it's a full bank so you could deposit for ex. not a ATM i guess?
and deposit boxes

cash is king in germany still

@CaldeiraG True... the article also mentions withdrawals though.
@Magisch And that sucks :P

3:46 PM
Ben Popper on March 27, 2020
We have a new social account full of fun animations highlighting great questions and answers from across Stack Overflow and Exchange.
well, SO having a instagram account for sharing ads and their podcast is my top #1 thing I wanted
/s

Better on Instagram and not here :P

:P
I guess the Feed bot would do that if you wanted
but nah

4:06 PM
A known website that distributes movies and TV online *illegally* of course, it's on the 13th position (the website got a DNS block)

24th february until 23th march 2020
Kinda funny xd
sites like booking, ebay, etc are gone from the top 50 because of the circuntances

2 hours later…
6:13 PM
@CaldeiraG tbh I kind of like the concept of a project explaining code in neat little pictures and animations
just seems odd for Stack Overflow the company to do it, but shrug not my department :p

user15026
@CaldeiraG Yeah, I find the whole thing kinda....odd

user15026
but whatever, they do what they do
