Morning :)
Nobody is here :o
Oh and the new SO design was deployed everywhere

hi
I'm here... just silent ;)

Oh, hello there o/

Hey :)

Asked today? it's been 14 hours x)

Hmm. Yeah..
Perhaps it's 'today' for 24 hours XD

8:26 AM
XD well

9:12 AM
@CaldeiraG they're ugly

9:34 AM
So, someone just responded to one of my "canned comment" in a nice way. As this was unexpected, I kind of panicked and spend the next 5 minutes wondering how I could respond to that x)

PANIC~~~~!!!
You did good :)

JAD
When in doubt, flag as NLN ;)

That's mean! We have a new user that is probably going to stick, be nice!! We should all leave welcoming comments there now and scare them away :P

@JAD I often do that, but this wasn't a NLN flag situation ><

@Ælis > And, again, welcome to IPS! :)
in a real way. ;p

9:38 AM
@ankii Sssssh, don't tell them that my first comment was just a copy past ^^ :p

;p

meta.stackexchange.com/a/339745/369802 < I mostly referred to stuff happening in here and on this site in that answer, I do hope I didn't mischaracterize anything!
(If I did, feel free to let me know. But I generally think y'all are awesome about all this ;) )

@Tinkeringbell I read it earlier, it's a nice answer :)

pfew!

@Tinkeringbell As someone just told me: "You did good :)" :p

9:41 AM
XD thank you :D

anyone has any carrots ?

@ankii I do, why? x)

Gajar ka halwa (Hindi: गाजर का हलवा), also known as gajorer halua, Gajrela, Gajar Pak, and Carrot halwa is a carrot-based sweet dessert pudding from the Indian subcontinent. It is made by placing grated carrots in a pot containing a specific amount of water, milk and sugar and then cooking while stirring regularly. It is often served with a garnish of almonds and pistachios. The nuts and other items used are first sautéed in ghee, a type of clarified butter from the Indian subcontinent.The dessert is traditionally eaten during all of the festivals in India, mainly on the occasion of Diwali, Holi...
its December and I am still craving.

@ankii It seems nice, unfortunately the only things I "cook" is pasta ^^ (and mushroom, 'cause I love mushroom :p )

This is not very different..
both involve boiling in a pot and adding things.

9:45 AM
@ankii I never did it and never saw anyone did it, so it's very different

> Carrots must first be grated and then dried before cooking. The grated carrots are then put into a heated pan with a specific amount of milk or khoya and sugar. After stirring for 4–5 minutes, roughly chopped cashew nuts are added and 10–15 minutes later a specific amount of pure ghee is added as well. Finally, it is often served with a garnish of almonds and pistachios.[16]
yeah.. whenever you crave dessert, lookup some Indian youtuber

10:08 AM
I'm hungry now. Well not hungry, just wanting some "home" food. My fiancé and I have both been working long shifts and have hardly had any time and energy to cook.

@ankii It's alright but I don't think it's a big improvement either

10:38 AM
aww xD cc @Tink

Aww! That one is cute! :D

:D

(Though I'm not for sale and if I ever was to sell myself, I'd not pick a price that cheap! :P)

;p

10:52 AM
Some people might not appreciate an approach which looks like other people are trying to make the decision for them... I mean, as soon as someone asks me if I have any plans for X, I know they have something on their mind, but are beating around the bush. This is a bit saddening. — Igor G 2 mins ago

I like it when you answer a question late, but you still get more upvotes than other answers that were already there :) (In this case nearly all the existing answers said A is not okay, while I wanted to provide an argument for when A was okay)

11:23 AM
You know what? It's Friday! Let's have a cat to celebrate @ips

Aw, you are very cute *-*

A: Is it ok to ask questions that could be solved with SEDE queries?

scohe001I've written a SEDE query to resolve your question. You can see it run here: On a more serious note, I think this is completely fine from time to time if you're having trouble with a query or if you need one-time data (something like this). But if you're posting weekly just asking for statisti...

I see what you did there :p

@Ælis As their lawyer, all they have to say about the matter is fhbcakvbikebrifbcwonjoevn

@CaldeiraG Oh, that one is good!

@CaldeiraG Hey some people still have some honey left to pour into that crap pile

12:31 PM
that is a lovely answer

Q: Changing WIFI discretely

AlexI live at home with my parents but we don’t get along too well. As of now I’ve had all my devices IP blocked and am unable to use the family WiFi. My question is if I were to get my own WiFi with the same company (xfinity) would there be much hassle in setting in up and how long would it take?

OP could ask IPS.SE on how to resolve their issues :p

12:52 PM
I'm listening to a podcast on my way to work, and the guest just said "common sense isn't common" it's nice to hear that phrase beyond IPS
@Tinkeringbell ooh, yeah that would be quite the bargain

@Rainbacon I mean, I read it somewhere else on the internet before porting it to IPS :P

The podcast guest who said it is the author of a book called "The Pragmatic Programmer". If I understand correctly it's a fairly well known book, so I would assume that the author's words are well spread on the internet

1:18 PM
Evening!
I need a cup of coffee and a doughnut. I am exhausted.

I need time to go faster so I can stop working sooner :P

A J
lol
Can someone tell me a joke? I want to laugh.

@AJ why is a panda like a mobster?

@AJ Which bear is the most condescending?

A J
@AlexRobinson Why?

1:23 PM
@AJ eats shoots and leaves

A J
@Tinkeringbell which one?

@AJ A pan-duh

A J
@Tinkeringbell haha
@AlexRobinson ohh. hahaha

1:43 PM
I wasn't motivated to work. Then I eat in the restaurant with my coworker. Now I am even less motivated to work ><

whats the definition of a will? ... Come on! its a dead giveaway!

Don't tempt me!
If I'm allowed to do dark humor it would lead to . . . unexpected results

Q: If a picture of a screen is a Screenshot what is a video of a screen?

Chagai FriedlanderI'm looking for a catchy and nice-sounding word. "Screenrecording" is my favourite but I am still not really satisfied. Options I found unsatisfying: Videoshot, Screenshots,Screenpint, Screenbottle, Screencap, Screenmotionpicture, Screencast, Screenselfie, Screengif.

OP is looking for meaningless upvotes shrugs

@CaldeiraG The answer is Twitch

:p
you're not wrong

1:49 PM
@CaldeiraG screenbomb duh
@CaldeiraG They're not, I've seen that happen commonly enough though
Why would you not want a hormone rush.
I disagree upvotes are meaningless

Their answer is pretty great though

@M.A.R. They add up to a virtual reputation

@Belle I didn't measure the size

@CaldeiraG Aren't we all looking for "meaningless" virtual reputation?

@M.A.R. About 3.2cm, which is large for an answer

1:53 PM
@Ælis In short yes but they're not meaningless if other users value it so to speak

There must be some empirical error here

@CaldeiraG Well then, in this case, no upvote is meaningless ^^

That is what makes you happy at the end of the day, people valuing your contributions

Upvotes meaninglessly

@CaldeiraG yeah... gonna have to downvote that
not that i have the rep for it to show but still

1:55 PM
Let the lesson in this be never to look for inspirational advice in the chatroom

You know what? Maybe we should change topic. I don't like the way we are talking about this user from a different site

It's just an OT question, meh. Unless SU accepted those? Doggy would know

its friday!! what are people's weekend plans?

Let's talk about this guy

@avazula I was hopeing to do some Christmas shopping this weekend. But with the strick and no public transportation, that won't be possible :(

1:58 PM
oop that sucks :/

@Ælis :/
As someone who was stripped of internet a while ago for a whole week, apocalypse seems very scary to me.
No cat compilations to watch on YouTube

@AlexRobinson Maybe IRL shopping. I wanted to order online, but mom asked me to go out to the city with her instead over lunch...

@AlexRobinson Mrs Bacon and I are going to the ballet to see The Nutcracker tonight

There was no way to politely decline

@AlexRobinson Well, I kind of agree with the reason behind the strick, I just dislike the repercussions very much ><

2:00 PM
@Rainbacon which one? The classic?

Yes

@Rainbacon Are you going to the ballet often? I'm under the impression that USA people do it much more than French one

Because I sure hope it's nothing other than the classic

This is my first time, though my wife goes somewhat frequently

@Rainbacon I hope you will enjoy it, then. I never saw a ballet (or opera) before, but I kind of went to try someday

2:03 PM
Wait which one was the classic

that SU question is now closed :)

Nice, status update

2:31 PM
Today at work: "How to DDos yourself with one bad loop"...
(we just had a 30 minutes downtime because of this ^^' )

So you DDosed yourselves?

Not me. But someone at work opened a window somewhere. The page had some... issues... (infinite loop call to an important Web API of our). And then your main site was down ><

Oh, I thought you meant that you and your coworkers were unproductive for 30 minutes because you were discussing how to DDos yourself

Oh no, that would have been to easy to answer :p

2:55 PM
you know what isn't fun? having to manually enter 300+ email addresses to send out emails

Oh dear, this new question ^^'

AHAHAHAHA
i think its important to offer an easy way out, but it kinda looks like a phrasing thing to me

It's a really good question, we'll have problems if it hits HNQ though

Q: How do I find out if my former manager is interested in intercourse?

SvetlanaofVodianovaMy wife and I want to make our sex life more exciting and we both think inviting a third person will work. I want ask my former manager if she's interested. @Rainbacon The previous title wasn't that good IMO (and the tag weren't good either). But yes, it's a well-written question, I was surprised

My guess is that with the current title it will be automatically excluded from HNQ

@Rainbacon Yep. And with the tag, it probably will too

ok, sent 150 emails in 30 minutes... this is a good pace
can a room owner prune some of these IPS bot comments... its a lotta clutter atm

3:34 PM
17 messages moved to Trash
I only got the last few ones... I don't have a script to get them all right now :)

thats fine ! the room looks a lot better for it

@ExtrovertedMainMan that's looks like (on a first glance) something more people should read... no more wrongly read signs.. no more misunderstandings.

4:52 PM
Just to be clear, we're talking here about 3 women right? I ask this because that's what I understand from the words of the question and your firstname that I associate with women only, but nowhere in the question do I see any mention of you knowing whether your ex-boss is open to same-sex intercourse anyway and I would consider it the first step for such a discussion. If she's already not ok for it when there's only 2 people, I hardly think she will be ok for 3... — Laurent S. 1 min ago

Matched regex(es) ["possible-aic", "experimental(@Mith)"]

@IPSCommentBot I...what? I mean I guess they're asking about the gender of OP instead of assuming. But that's the most assuming ask I've ever heard.

its chatty and unnecessary...

I don't even know that it's an ask. It just assumes the OP's gender and then asks if the former boss is ok with that

Yea it seems more chatty than asking for clarification, I agree.

there is room for a legitimate comment asking about OP's gender and or sex, but that comment sure ain't it

mrisdal.github.io/blog/posts/reflections-on-stack-overflow < A blog post from Megan that looks back on working as a product manager for SO. It's highly recommended reading by me :)

She's leaving??? :(

Yes.
twitter.com/MeganRisdal/status/1203000382806319104?s=20 < Twitter thread where I also got the blog post from.

Dang. That's a bummer. Meg's replies on meta were always really good. I'm sad to see her go

Yeah, reading the blog post, I now also understand a bit better why they were always good ;)
I do hope the team continues in that way...

Eh
I don't wanna be a downer, but
Well, fill in the gaps.
There certainly have been positively changes and recently so, and you can trace what the blog post says to exactly how they ended up being positive changes.

5:40 PM
You're thinking that won't continue without Megan?

There's also that you should treat a gathering crowd of veteran users as they are; nothing more, and nothing less. Like any crowd, meta has sometimes swayed away from its users' ultimate purpose, at more sensationalist times or as backlash for some changes, and I vividly remember reading about these things unfolding as early as 2010.
I still think, though, that huddling them together in a sack of data points is going to produce heavily inaccurate results.
I'd dare say, in some cases, power users know better than non-users what the latter group wants or should really want.
In light of that, I did read a lot of data points treatment, and also a lot of "listen to the community" treatment. I'm having a hard time believing the latter, and it has not been the Q&A team's MO, at least recently.

@M.A.R. We're... literally having it right now with the post notices rollout though.
I do think that both can be useful, if your community grows beyond a certain size, it's going to be increasingly harder to do 'listen to the community' the way old people here are used to it. Data points can give you structured feedback... and people will s till let you know if they're missing an option on a survey XD

There's keeping the balance, and then there's deliberately not listening to veteran users. It's understandable to pay more attention to non-power users that only recently have been able to make themselves heard, but there are also quite a lot of features to work on that would benefit a significant majority of all users that have been cast aside just because meta has been vocal about them.
2

Ehh... I don't really share that view though. Unless they all got status-declined tags and I missed the outrage over that, I think it's more that they weren't prioritized despite meta being vocal about them, instead of cast aside.

And meta being very vocal about something usually means not everyone find it a good idea

Maybe it's just me. The experiment on Close Votes has been just an experiment on close votes, and things are moving way too slowly on that front to wash away even the smallest of the weekly-ish dramas

5:51 PM
@M.A.R. I thought that one was implemented now?

@Tinkeringbell Outsiders are apathetic about how something is run, just how it would benefit them. I couldn't care less how a Reddit forum is moderated, and I would just judge it based on my very few experiences with it. The Behind-The-Scenes is crucial to how it's run, however, and I shouldn't decide how it should be moderated if I'm not acquainted with the limitations or if I will approach it from the typical "me vs. mods" perspective.
The problem I see is "us vs. mods" is being actively enforced as if it's going to be practical for either side, and a great source of feedback is being entirely ignored on new features because "yeah yeah, we know how you feel".

@M.A.R. I do hope they somehow manage to filter that out (disgruntled users)... But I still think it would be useful to know stuff like 'what would make you care about how a Reddit forum is moderated' if part of your site needs more people like that.

What is being implemented does not seem to incorporate how meta reacts to it, even if it's a step in the right direction, i.e. the close banners

@M.A.R. To be honest I do like how Yaakov's post notice feedback meta post is going so far... and I wouldn't want to have people kinda drag the feeling there just to have it there to, if that makes sense?

@Tinkeringbell That's probably going to happen anyway, you know it better than me obviously, but of course I'm not that kinda person

5:58 PM
@M.A.R. I've been babysitting that one and a few others today... It seems relative calm so far :) No guarantees, I do need sleep some days :P

I have this cold impartial look at everything, now that I don't get involved myself. I rarely get emotional anymore (I hope), which is because of the burn out and because of the head-shaking observer stance

@M.A.R. Which... is kinda sad but understandable. And in a way, I'd wish more people could be a bit less emotional, but also not entirely cold-hearted. Just less hot-headed, I guess ;)
And now, if you don't mind... for my next trick, I'll disappear for a while ;)

I guess what I'm ultimately saying is I wish everyone at SE adhered to detaching emotions from what features they're implementing, like the blog posts says
@Tinkeringbell Have a good one!

Q: How to politely ask for a price for a commision, when I only intend to ask?

VylixI wanted to ask for a price for a commission from an artist. However, what's on my budget is lower than what I think the commission would worth, hence I intend to only ask for the price and not buy the service. I extremely worry that just stating my budget will offend or discourage the artist. M...
