5:28 AM
@Mithrandir No wonder

5:42 AM
Morning people!
@Catija Yay! Thanks for everything Catija. It's so good to see such an improvement for our community!

5:53 AM
@avazula Bonjour

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Bonjour, comment ça va ?

I forgot, how was it different from Bonsoir? I think Bonsoir was a bit informal

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Bonsoir is like good evening
Bonjour is for every other time of the day
We don't have an equivalent of "good afternoon"

Ça va, you?
I'm already running out of French now

hahaha
I'm good too :)
Good to see you back, I hope you're in shape
Apparently you didn't lost any ounce of your humour

5:56 AM
Well if it didn't get heavier it didn't get any lighter either
So I'll still try to make some bad jokes here and then ;)
Oh it's the other Rob
Or maybe the original. Didn't check. @Rob don't ever enter Tavern on the meta

haha

Speaking of French
in English Language & Usage: Multi-Layered Discourse Room, 10 hours ago, by RegDwigнt
I applaud the effort. It takes true craftsmanship to say something in French that doesn't even make sense in French.

Rob
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I'm there frequently, and almost every morning wake up to misdirected pings ;)

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's quite easy to say something in French that doesn't make any sense
My coworkers do it on a daily basis

@Rob Well, I can't see avatars as they're blocked, so I have no idea which Rob I'm talking to. Yours does work now though
Between you and me, the other Rob is kinda weird. Don't tell him

6:34 AM
@Rob so they rob you of your time, eh?

Rob
6:49 AM
Heh, you could say that

7:10 AM
'llo

how are you?

doing fine

good to hear

Q: Incident at Indian restaurant in Boston

Aritro PathakI'm an Indian PhD student living in Boston. We called this Indian restaurant located across the street, asking how long their lunch buffet remains open; we were told it is open till 3PM; we arrived there at 2:20, and right from the very beginning, the person at the counter seemed extremely belli...

@Magisch It's OK, I'm sure he doesn't let it rub him the wrong way.

Is no one bored at work? :D

I'm too busy writing a question for IPS :p

Hahah good. Make it a great one, so it can go into HNQ! :D
Then I'll entertain myself by looking up how an RBMK reactor core explodes ;)

Yeah, well, it's about coworker and politics. It could go to HNQ but that wouldn't necessarily be a good news :p
@Tinkeringbell I didn't know you were interested in that kind of things. Was it the HNQ worldbuilding question that made you think about it?

@Ælis Hahaha no. I'm watching an HBO miniseries called Chernobyl and don't want to wait three more episodes to find out how that happened ;-)

@Tinkeringbell Haha, that's a great way to spoil yourself XD

12:11 PM
@Ælis I'm not even sure if they will explain eventually so... It doesn't hurt ;)

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, TV show/stories usually don't tell you the same thing than a scientific article would have

@Ælis Well, I guess I'm going to be glad once I understand the wikipedia article. I really don't have the brain power to understand the more scientific side of it!

@Tinkeringbell Too bad this RBMK reactor core can't give you the energy you need :p

@Ælis Oh, I do have energy. I just don't have the willpower to use it right now :/ I have to, but work is slow and not exactly doing what I want it to do so it's a lot of 'change code, build, restart session, import stuff, prepare actual test scenario, run test, fail, look for new test data or change code, repeat.'
In between, there's loads of room to be bored ;)

@Tinkeringbell I have that sometimes. It's really annoying when your tests take a loooooong time to run and you have to wait just to have an "it failed" result

12:23 PM
Yep
Though the build and session restart also take considerable time here.

12:44 PM
yawns morning

Morning :)
Tea? :D

Good idea.

@ElizB Hello :)

yawn morning indeed! Hi guys!
I think I owe @Ælis some teasing but that seems rude after the question you posted recently!

@TheTinyMan Depends on the kind of teasing ^^ Also, I am now curious to know what you want to tease me about :p

12:56 PM
@Ælis ... heck, I didn't think this far ahead, I just remember you telling me that I should tease you a few days ago. You've, uh, got a super cute avatar! mock-scowls

hello :)

@ElizB How are you this morning? :-)

@TheTinyMan Haha x) Also, my avatar was created by @avazula I'm not sure you are teasing the right person right-now :p

Morning everyone :)

@Ælis Hmm, I might be bad at this, haha

12:59 PM
@Rainbacon Not morning to you :p
@TheTinyMan Just say you are too nice to be good at teasing people and no one will care that you can't tease them properly :p

It's nice to see that the site didn't burn to the ground on our first night on HNQ!

@Rainbacon Yeah x) I was kind of worried about that too, but it seems that things went well (but your "first" HNQ question title wasn't that clickbaity)

@TheTinyMan sleepy
went and saw Endgame last night

Q: How to let other coworkers know that I don't share my coworker political views?

ÆlisBackground Today, I was in my workplace kitchen where I was having lunch. There were other coworkers having lunch there too. One of them (let's call him Bob) was talking about political stuff and displaying his (extreme) political views that I strongly disagree with. At some point, I said some...

@El'endiaStarman Thanks for sharing that research last night. I was talking with a friend (who suspects he is on the spectrum) about it, and I really liked his summary which was "So the communication barrier with autism is a protocol issue between autists and neurotypicals, not a fundamental flaw with the autists"

I have a potential question for IPS because I think it wont fit on the workplace

Well, if you want to post it here or the sandbox we'd be happy to help you hammer out the details

1:20 PM
@avazula The file transfer protocol?

@IPSCommentBot you rude

1:46 PM
@Ælis Is that true though? :o
@ElizB Don't spoil me on it but how was it? :-D

1:58 PM
@Rainbacon That's a pretty good way to put it!

@El'endiaStarman I also really liked the analogy he told me that he came up with as a child to try to explain to his parents why communication was hard. "It's like I think in German, speak in Italian, and you only understand French"

Q: Is it normal to be rejected by girls 99 of 100 times

Martin SI am a normal looking guy but am single almost my entire life. I tried all the online date sites but that makes it even worse. I don't know if that is the normal case but after 10 years of online dating I had only a few girls who where interested in me. I would say that I need to contact 100 girl...

@ExtrovertedMainMan Just needs one more close vote

@ExtrovertedMainMan Maybe people could start questioning their flirting patterns in that case?
This post seems to say women are so cruel toward men

@avazula I offered to help the OP with his communication skills if he'd like, but my guess is that he's more interested in ranting about the fact that he can't get a date

2:32 PM
I don't believe the graphs on there either :-P

There are some real problems with how online dating works that are reflected in what he says - in my experience and from what I've heard from everyone I've talked to about it, frequently women are inundated with low-quality messages from men who don't even read their profile, which means many women often ignore most messages out of sheer necessity and more meaningful ones might get lost in the crowd - but if he's literally getting one response to a *hundred* messages, there's probably another problem.

@TheTinyMan I will say, when I was using online dating I only got about 1 response out of every 100 messages I sent. A female friend of mine who also online dates explained to me that it's really just a numbers game. For every message I send, there are 100 other guys that also sent a message to that woman. Of those messages, probably half or more are worthless comments on her appearance, of the ones that aren't, she's probably only going to read and respond to a few.
So not only do you have to send a good message, it has to stand out among the good ones she gets.

Absolutely. I might be mis-estimating my response rate, or it might have gotten worse since I haven't been on those sites since like 2011.

@TheTinyMan Very, very well done. Satisfying. plenty of hero moments and tear-jerker moments. plenty of funny too :)

@ElizB Sounds good! I'm...so far behind in the MCU and try not to watch any movie without having seen the antecedents in its storyline.

@Rainbacon we even have a question about that ;) (with the caveat that it's from a while ago so on-topic-ness may have shifted a bit since)

2:46 PM
@TheTinyMan I saw Captain Marvel right before it left theaters haha

@EmC Might be closeable as a phrasing request. I know that we close for that reason, but I'm still not sure exactly where we draw the line

@TheTinyMan oh and the Endgame movie is 3 hours long... went in at 7:30, left around 10:40, and got home and got settled around 11pm. phew

Sounds like a marathon!

I need to see Captain Marvel too

@TheTinyMan Captain Marvel is fantastic- better than I expected!

@ElizB I've heard such glowing things!

2:50 PM
@TheTinyMan I wasn't happy when i heard that captain marvel was supposed to be OP, but the origin story is really cool and in Endgame, she's... awesome, too. (gah, no spoilers! 😬)
I can't say any more after that

@ElizB Thank you for the restraint with spoilers, I appreciate it! I can't wait for the day when I get around to seeing that, haha. Does it have tie-ins with other MCU stuff?

@Rainbacon eh, I'm not too concerned about it, since the answers do seem to focus on principles of what to do rather than giving phrases to try

@TheTinyMan which movie? Captain Marvel or Endgame? Both have great tie-ins with other MCU stuff, indeed

@ElizB Captain Marvel. I assume that Endgame has tie-in after tie-in!

@TheTinyMan Captain Marvel's end credits is a great tie-in when you get the chance to see it
ohhh endgame has sooooooooo many tie-ins it's so satisfying
but not an overwhelming amount- just the right amount plus new stuff
kept me on my toes the whole 3 hours

2:55 PM
I'm sure I'll make it up to Endgame some time in the next 10 or maybe 15 years! ^.^
at the rate I'm going, haha

@TheTinyMan haha yeah

Hey, Tiny Men can be fast
Just look at the ant guy

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Not at watching movies though unless I get bingey and have someone to watch them with xD

ant-man plus ant-man and the wasp is great

Well, if it's only those two MCU movies you haven't watched you're in the same shoes as me
Ugh, get out of my shoes!

2:58 PM
Sorry, I shrunk down.

I think I've seen maybe...6 or 7 MCU movies? I'm not up to The Avengers yet.

the MCU really did a good job linking many things together

Wait, do the old X-Men movies count as MCU?

no, the x-men aren't MCU

2:58 PM
Yeah, 6 or 7 then.

@Rainbacon that's probably true

OK that's slow. Ur slow.

I get that a lot! :-)

Prunus spinosa, called blackthorn or sloe, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family Rosaceae. It is native to Europe, western Asia, and locally in northwest Africa. It is also locally naturalised in New Zealand, Tasmania and eastern North America. == Description == Prunus spinosa is a large deciduous shrub or small tree growing to 5 metres (16 ft) tall, with blackish bark and dense, stiff, spiny branches. The leaves are oval, 2–4.5 centimetres (0.79–1.77 in) long and 1.2–2 centimetres (0.47–0.79 in) broad, with a serrated margin. The flowers are about 1.5 centimetres (1⁄2 in) in diameter...
You're probably doing it wrong though anyway. Who watches Incredible Hulk.
Wait, wasn't Spinosa some Olympic champ or something?
Your anonymity is ruined.

3:43 PM
I like the MCU movies, but as a set they leave me a bit unsatisfied. I think nearly all of them are great alone, but one after another in short order they started to feel a bit bland and repetitive to me

bacon cookies?
raining from the sky
mmmmm

@RoryAlsop cookies rain

3:56 PM
they do
according to cloudy with a chance of cookies

@Upper_Case Well of course. I've heard similar complaints from people who go on a Marvel Marathon, but it's neither unnatural nor a bad thing. First bar of magnificent chocolate, hmm, yum, but can you say it about the 4th? What about the 22nd?
That was in the middle of Pacific
You only get acid rain in urban areas.
Hmm, hang on. I see a pattern. Mith-cooked cookies. Acid. Makes sense.
Both dissolve your internal organs.

Hang on. You're the volatile chemical compound here, not me.

I'm an organic solvent. I sacrifice my relationships to make science progress. What do you ever do? Huh huh huh

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ For sure, but when they are as tightly bound as the MCU movies it's a bit different. They're not intended to be consumed in isolation, but instead as a single, massive unit. Even without a marathon, you are "supposed" to see and remember them all to make sense of the crossovers, which forces the same-ness of their structures into my mind (especially during the capstone Avengers movies)

@Upper_Case Sure, and a good watching plan is, IMO, to set them at least 2 days apart
That's my rule for watching good movies
You have to give it some time to sink in, or you wouldn't really enjoy it to the fullest
And that holds true even for good movies that are solely for entertainment, not bearing any special messages or philosophies.

4:47 PM
I like that standard. I need to get better about resisting the urge to binge and the convenient ability to do so

"convenient ability to do so" - the sign of a person who has access to streaming services...

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I'd wish I was that flexible :P

@Ælis Sometimes if people don't have good interpersonal skills you have to rough them up until they learn

I guess it's a skill itself. The other side staying conscious or alive was never a requirement
Go full Peter Parker on the bully
Makes you think, are spiders flexible?

So, I'm on a conference call and I couldn't tell for sure, but I'm about 98% sure that I heard someone say that they just saw a picture of a team-member's new wife, and that based on how attractive she is, that team member should be in charge. Fairly confident that's the creepiest and most inappropriate thing I've ever heard in a work meeting

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's a descriptive one.
Also...

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's okay :)

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, but now we have to wait 13 hours to see if our evil (rep) plan worked! :p

Maybe, for the sake of bureaucracy, make a separate chat and throw Oopsbot's ramblings there

6:40 PM
@Ælis I thought it was 8?

@Tinkeringbell I just don't want to overwork our poor comment bot.. yeah.. :P

Also maybe a good point of reference if people wanna find out what constitutes tp and fp by example

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ we have the closet for the full comment logs :)

Wow, that is just so redundant.

it only posts ones that match patterns in here

@Tinkeringbell I don't know, Catija said 8, @Mithrandir said 13, I don't know who to trust anymore ^^

Does it include users' subsequent feedback?
Apparently not.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ hm, what do you mean? the feedback goes to the server regardless of which room you reply in

Why not, given that he (per what has been related here) did not speak up against Bob's statements? And if you don't assume Alex agrees with Bob's views, despite his lack of explicit rejection of those views in the moment, is there a particular reason that you are concerned people will assume differently with respect to yourself? — Upper_Case 1 min ago

@Mithrandir Oh, sorry that I missed the joke ^^'

@EmC I mean if the comments and the feedbacks were stored somewhere instead of thrown away, it'd make sense, be neat, and teach someone like me by example what's tp and fp in regards to comments.
@Mithrandir "How can I make a joke in an online chatroom that works?"
Eeps comment bot manages to be redundant but not sufficiently bureaucratic. It needs the touch of a German.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ ohh. I think there is a command you can run to check the feedback on a particular comment. We don't (typically) delete anything out of The Closet, but we move the bot messages out of this room so it doesn't clutter up the actual conversation

@EmC Oh, that'd work
And I do appreciate you moving the messages.

Do other countries have an equivalent of the American DMV?
And do they suck just as bad??

#questionsthatkeepmeupatnight

@Upper_Case You left a chatty message, but I still want to hug you for it :D

Lol I’ve been sitting in the DMV for 2hrs (when I came in there were 20ppl in front of me. Now there are 5) and I’m not sure whether or not I should be daydreaming about being in the EU

We have such things here, for various reasons

@scohe001 What is the DMV? Also, if it's about paperwork, I can an 100% assure you that it's worst in France :p

7:10 PM
Also the equivalent of DMV has popped up recently, but they're new so they don't suck that much
@Ælis In America, everything is about hamburgers one way or the other.

@Ælis not sure what it stands for, but it’s where we go for anything driver’s license-related, which is what I’m here for now
They’re also notoriously slow

@scohe001 Department of Motor Vehicles

@Ælis have you watched Zootopia?

Just found that lol thanks @tink. Life is hard on mobile. Idk how @mith does it

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Yes, you are thinking about the sloth, aren't you? ^^

7:13 PM
Practice. Lots of practice.

@scohe001 Yeah, I hate finding links on mobile too!

Opening mobile Wikipedia links on PC reminds me of The Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

@scohe001 I don't think things are better in the UE about that. And France is well known to love paperwork and have an awful lot of it (which is, as every good paperwork, awfully complicated)

The only thing it needs is a rhyming resonant chant in the background.
A big "huuuuuuuuuuuuuuum"

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ fun fact: as of recently McDonald's in Austria can help people contact the US Embassy

Someone save me... data validation is the worst

@Upper_Case 'Come on data, you can do it!'
'You're a good data'

If I didn't work for a health insurance company, that might be plausible
This data knows it isn't that great
(it's complete, just messy)

Poor data. You're really not doing a good job at validating it if you let it show that you agree with that data knowing it's not that great! :)

I'm whipping it into shape. It's showtime!

7:35 PM
Good luck! :D

Also, I tried adding in some more information on the workplace political discussion thing. It's awkward

I'll take a look once I've finished watching this episode ;)

No rush, it'll still be awkward later
What show?

Chernobyl

That looked good in the trailer, are you liking it?

7:44 PM
Yep. It's pretty hard to watch at times, but at the same time it's really good at keeping my attention

Much like the actual event, I imagine...

I guess so. I wasn't born back then ;)

Lol, me either. Hence the imagining

I have spent the last 4 hours hammering out good coding practices and stuff with the other lead dev here and learning a bunch of things and I feel like a wizard right now!

8:06 PM
@TheTinyMan That sounds nicer than my last 4 hours

@Rainbacon Oh yeah? :-\

@TheTinyMan What's your favorite new thing you learned?

I've been in meetings for 2 and a half hours. One of those meetings was talking with another dev team about the fact that we kept getting errors from their API. They asked us at least 3 times why we couldn't just get some of the data instead of all of it (we're doing a nightly data pull for our analytics team). Apparently their API can't handle sending 100k rows of data on a once a day schedule.

Finally made it out of the DMV! I now have a new state Driver's License!! Though I'm not sure it was worth 4 hours of my life...

@scohe001 Nice! Also, I can confirm that it's definitely not worth it

8:19 PM
@Upper_Case Yeah, it is a bit awkward. But I think that's mainly because I get the impression Ælis doesn't really fit the categories of people you describe there, and the experience doesn't really relate to people distancing themselves from a conversation/viewpoint. The question gives me the impression that they are capable of discussing politics and defending their viewpoint, but chose not to because of who Bob is and the amount of energy it would cost them, instead of not being able at all.
But I wouldn't take it out either.

user15026
@scohe001 I am glad you survived

@Rainbacon well it'll let me get out of a ticket by doing online "driving courses," and keeping that off my record prevents my insurance jumping up...so this one time it may have been worth it :P
@Ash it was a close thing

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I tried to draw a line between being flatly uninterested in further discussion (Aelis' case) and being unable to do so, because I think the effect is the same either way

8:49 PM
@Upper_Case I've written my own, focusing more on the body language. I linked to yours, hope that's okay :D

8:59 PM
@Tinkeringbell Of course! I'm flattered.

@Ælis my rep is now 4532, if only I had 900 more rep
