@Catija how should I flag for close for a question where they're asking "what should I do?"
(I flagged as "Too Broad" but just want to be sure for next time)

Welcome. Thank you for sharing this. I do not have a complete answer, but it sounds like you and your brother have been through a lot as well. You are not responsible for anyone's actions but your own. Perhaps it would help to talk with your brother about what you and he need the most, and then try to be an advocate for those things. — cactus_pardner 1 min ago

Q: Apologies and parting notes

apaulI've given this a lot of thought over the last month or so. interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/13548/… Anyone else find it odd that a user who has been a member for all of 15 minutes is welcoming people to IPS?

4:04 AM
@Rainbacon Eh, not necessarily. If they've been avoiding joining but just found something that really spoke to them... or if that's what they do on the sites they're active on... it could just be habit.

4:38 AM
I had a 4 of older-ish custom flags that weren't necessarily flagging for deletion all declined at once and now im banned from flagging :(
I thought we encouraged custom flags for tricky situations...

@Jesse If you're not flagging for deletion, then why? I'm sorry you're flag banned but other than deleting something or commenting on it, the mods don't really have any tools. We're not going to mod message someone for a single bad answer, which some of your flags were for.
You can write a comment to encourage the user to improve the post. That doesn't require our attention.

@Catija It was more that I wasn't sure what to do, I just wanted to bring the issue to the attention of someone who might understand protocol better than me

If you're not sure what to do, ask on meta. That's what it's for.
We don't necessarily have the answers and we don't have a way to respond if we do.

But does that mean that I should never raise negative issues via custom flag?

What do you mean by "negative issues"?

4:47 AM
there are a number of metas with "raise a custom flag" as a (what i thought was widely accepted) way of potentially dealing with similar things

It's almost midnight for me and you're talking in generic terms. I'm not sure how to answer your question.
There's nothing wrong with raising a custom flag but if you honestly don't know what to do and there's no specific advice about what to do... ask in here or on meta.

in which they say "custom flag it"... im just trying to understand the ban

The ban is automatic. If you have under a certain percentage of your flags marked helpful, you get a 7 day ban. We can't control that.

The negative issues were: 2x dup, 1x content issues, 1x NAA but I felt they needed some more context so I turned it to custom flag
87 helpful, 1 retracted, 1 disputed and 8 declined I don't really see a percentage issue. I guess if its "recent declined" since they were a build up of pending ones that got declined just today i think

But one of the "dupe" answers you marked was older than the others, including the ones you didn't mark... but, again... what do you want us to do with "dupes"? If you haven't tried a NAA flag and a comment first, please don't custom flag something for us as NAA. NAA flags go to the community, not the moderators.
@Jesse It's within the last week, I think.
All of this is explained in the flag decline reasons you were given, though... have you looked at them?

4:59 AM
@Catija that dup is the reason i used a custom flag, to give the context because there were a large number of dups on one question

yeah, but only recently
only once i noticed i was banned

Did you see the discussion Shog had with Mith when he got flag banned a few weeks ago? It's directly relevant here.

Heh, 2222 helpful flags.

@Mithrandir The question is basically a phrasing request. It's hard to control answer quality like that if the question is basically asking for sentences?

@Tinkeringbell hahaha yesss

@Cashbee Stick to it :P We need to mess up the statistics so that it looks like it's working :P
And we only have 30 days for that!

what do you mean, stick to it?

@Tinkeringbell ehhhh... I interpret it more as asking for methods, not phrasing
Also, opinions on this?

it clarifies a point that the answerer was unsure about (and I am OP of Q), but it doesn't really suggest improvement..

@Cashbee Is it suggesting improvement/asking for clarification? You have some leeway if you're the OP of a question: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/2197/1599

I don't quite agree with the argument about OP not keeping their end of the deal if the friend does not access all of the records. This opens the door to the friend intentionally not using some records so that he can argue that the agreement has not been upheld from OP's side. Also, if OP had not provided reasonable access to the records, I'd expect there to have been complaints in the five years_ before the friend requested the records back. As long as OP doesn't now refuse access; he is not in any way infringing on his end of the deal. — Flater 1 min ago

Welcome to Interpersonal Skills! As it stands, your question is very broad, and also primarily opinion-based. Therefore your question will be closed soon (which will give you time to edit. After you edit the question it can be reopened, if it is then a good fit for the site). Hey, y'all! We've got two RO spots open since AJ and Tinkeringbell are mods now. I know we've got a lot of mod presence in here so it may not be "necessary" but if you're interested in the post, let us know and we'll discuss who might be a good choice. Deadline to throw your hat in is Tuesday 11:59 PM
Please remember, deadline is today!

12:28 PM
I would, but I am not that masochistic

ooh
is there a list of responsibilities or rules that I could look up?

My hat is off to anyone who takes on the responsibility.

also, what does RO mean exactly xD

@Cashbee Room owner ;-)

@Tinkeringbell ok, thought so.

was reading the second one already. Thx :)

Hmmmmm.... room owner, now that has potential for mischief. I would be tempted to put in for it just to witness the abject panic that would cause, but Karma would likely come back to haunt me by actually getting it.

Well, if anyone else decides to throw in a hat, ping one (or all, if you feel mischievous) mod :D

@Tinkeringbell who's hat-thrown so far?

@Tinkeringbell I will throw my hat \o/

@Tinkeringbell wordplay.. grow a pair has another meaning

@Tinkeringbell experiment report: "BIG SHINY BUTTON WORK ON SLANTY NAME"

@Tinkeringbell Socks are a wonder to the scientific community. They have proven the existence of inter-dimensional portals, as well as string theory.

@Tinkeringbell kickz workz

@ArtOfCode Glad I don't have a slanty name anymore then. Now get those socks off the floor :P

@Tinkeringbell no, grow a pair (of balls) - it means 'to man up'

big shiny button no work on blue name :(

@Cashbee I know, I was deliberately playing dumb there :P

When you combine the unique properties of socks with heat and the circular motion of a dryer, a portal is opened to another dimension, which is where all the missing socks go

@Tinkeringbell was suspecting such a sly move, but couldn't be sure.. :(

@Mithrandir I know you have a lot ;) Just don't leave them lying around on the floor :P
Put them in the drawer, where they belong! :P

don't worry, they'll be gone in a minute

So... if I clicked "leave" on both of them, why are they both still here? frowns

@Mithrandir they left but instantly joined again

12:57 PM
eh, whatever. I closed their browsers, they'll be gone in ten minutes

@Tinkeringbell Guess I closed the tab before you welcomed me.

@MarcusR. Ah cool :) Glad to see I didn't scare you away :D

@MarcusR. hi :)

FYI i deleted the question since i cannot see how i can modify it to fit the rules. no point in gathering negative rep

@MarcusR. Sounds okay to me ;-) It would be hard (if not impossible) to make a question asking for a ranking of a list on topic on SE.
If there's ever anything from that list you're struggling with though, you can ask about it here ;)

1:03 PM
@MarcusR. yes, minor editing would not have been enough. Just reformulating the question to fit this stack was not possible, without drastically changing the question itself

@MarcusR. Keep in mind that deleted questions are weighed more heavily than downvotes when the system determines whether to quality ban someone.

@sphennings Once question won't harm... And now that you know where to find us, we can help you make sure the next one won't have to be closed, let alone deleted ;)

kind of intimidating to newcomers. ask a bad question, answer not perfect and there you go

my thought on salvaging your question: you could focus on **one** situation and ask how to apply/use one interpersonal skill.
i.e. grumpy coworker situation - how to show empathy

@MarcusR. Yeah, that's kinda the hard thing across all of SE. I think everyone does their best to communicate that closing questions or deleting answers isn't a penalty, but supposed to help: no gaining useless answers or negative reputation (although if you're at 1, that's as low as you can go)... It has a bump, and I think no-one is sure how to remove it without having it affect network quality...

1:08 PM
@Cashbee tbh i gave up on the question already. ill figure that thing out by myself

but as I said, it would be a completely different question than you intended to ask

@MarcusR. As Tinker says it takes more than one poorly received post to trigger a quality ban. We don't know exactly what is required since it was public knowledge it would be gamed.

@MarcusR. Well, you can always ask that stuff in chat ;)
> • Communication – oral, speaking capability, written, presenting, listening
• Courtesy – manners, etiquette, business etiquette, gracious, says please and thank you,
respectful
• Flexibility – adaptability, willing to change, lifelong learner, accepts new things, adjusts,
teachable
• Integrity – honest, ethical, high morals, has personal values, does what’s right
• Interpersonal Skills – nice, personable, sense of humor, friendly, nurturing, empathetic,
has self-control, patient, sociability, warmth, social skills
That's what I got from here
Those people did research, I guess they compiled that list using other lists (haven't read the entire article so you might wanna check the research method)... So I guess those are important ;-)
Interpersonal Skills are only a subset here though ;)

I'll look into that. thanks

I just found one gem of a definition of IPS:
> goal-directed behaviors, including communication and relationship-building competencies, employed in interpersonal interaction episodes characterized by complex perceptual and cognitive processes, dynamic verbal and nonverbal interaction exchanges, diverse roles, motivations and expectancies.

@Tinkeringbell That's a pretty good one.

Q: Is my friend in love with me?

1:34 PM
I don't see a reason to delete it. Closed questions serve as a good indicator of what is and isn't considered on topic.

@sphennings True, though it has attracted a reopen vote.

It'll be auto-deleted in 9? days if it doesn't get improved

@Rainbacon It also passed through the review queue already ;)
And it's really bad practice to delete stuff just because it has reopen votes.
It's your call (your being all of you), but I'm not worried in this case.

@Tinkeringbell Sadly, I have no way to know if it's passed through the queue since I didn't see it in the queue. And I can't cast delete votes yet :)

@Tinkeringbell I disagree that it's a bad practice. It keeps the site clean. If something is so blatantly off-topic as asking if someone is in love with you get's reopened, then it's going to be a real pain in the backside.

1:38 PM
@Rainbacon I didn't see it in the queue - exactly ;)

@Rainbacon You can always press the history button in the queue ;)

Sometimes you need to act defensively.

@Rainbacon you can check the timeline

@RichardU You mentioned more than just the reopen votes there as a reason for you to press delete...

@Tinkeringbell The history button only shows me reviews that I reviewed or skipped

@Mithrandir How does one get to that without a direct link?

/posts/<id>/timeline

Oh, I just have to navigate to it? There's no button?

@Tinkeringbell well, yes. yes I did.

That's weird, I've always been able to see the entire history. Are you sure you're in the right place?

Go to the reopen queue, and instead of review, pick history (top right corner somewhere, there's stats, history and review)

1:42 PM
Let me just state for the record that while reopen votes alone isn't reason to delete, a bad question threatening to be reopened IS a good reason to delete. Questions on suicide and love tend to be popular regardless of topicality

@Tinkeringbell that's a 10k tools
(or 2k on beta sites)

@Mithrandir Ah, like that.

one more delete vote? Please?

> your use of the pronouns he, him, she, her, they and their is very irritating. Usually I edit such minor grammar mistakes myself, but in this case I am not sure which one you actually meant. Can I ask you to re-read your question and fix some of the pronouns?
I mean, OP clearly is not fluent in English and will eventually not be able to fix those pronouns. But I can't do it either, since I really don't know which pronoun OP meant to use in the first place

I'd say go for it.

don't call it irritating please :)

Tinker makes a good point

you might call it 'confusing' :)

but calling it wrong is even worse :(

Unclear is probably best

"confusing to me". I think that would be a good call.

unclear is indeed best. thx

so, when do you use zir, yo, or xim?

As far as I can tell, it wasn't the edit it was the edit comment, that they felt was rude.
Being rude wasn't my intention, and if in the future I could use a different message that didn't come across as condescending I'd like to do that.

@sphennings Hmmm... I can't see the entire message, but I agree that 'no need to tell us' isn't really optimal. (I'm not going to call it condescending though). Good edit messages are hard ;)
For this, I'd certainly have mentioned 'minor' > It implies that it wasn't a big problem and not a lot of effort to clean up :)
And for the EDIT header, maybe mention something like 'I've removed the edit header, we encourage editing additional details directly into the post'
Sometimes, I follow that through with actually taking the time to add all the details into relevant places in the post as well.
But I'd love to hear from @RichardU as well :)

@IPSCommentBot Should we be encouraging answers that recommend professional help? This meta seems to indicate that we should be closing questions where the OP needs professional help, so I'd think answers suggesting it or comments suggesting that answers should be posted suggesting it would be removed.

Q: How to react to a man hitting and mistreating his dog in public

CKAa little bit of backstory first: my girlfriend and I went to the post office to fetch a package. In front of it was a beggar with a puppy dog. I'm not against beggars and some beggars have dogs and treat them well but he clearly didn't. I already heard that some beggars "borrow" puppies and drug...

@ExtrovertedMainMan As is, that's off topic. But a few edits could get it in good shape

@LordFarquaad Question: How to politely decline request for WiFi. Actual problem: Neighbors staying on WiFi after visit. It's not a frame challenge, because that would be on how OP views the situation. I agree with OP's situation and how he views it, just not with the solution he came up with.That's why I went back to the initial problem. — LVDV 1 min ago

I'm going to agree with @PaÅloEbermann that the images add nothing to the answer and if anything are confusing - regardless of whether you know that the person portrayed is Evel Knievel or not. I also don't think that half of your "suggested responses" are helpful except in very specific circumstances. And if you're meaning to give a satirical response (which is what I assume) then I don't think it's helpful at all to make light of the question when the OP clearly is concerned. — Doc 44 secs ago

I don't want to start a ridiculous discussion on meta, especially when things have been so calm so far, but I wanted to note something about a piece of this answer:
> > Stack Exchange has a culture problem
> I'd rather say: "a problem with some (few) people who, unfortunately, lack culture..." (as well as empathy, respect and some solid all-round education, to name a few.)
Ultimately, culture is what people do and what they experience, so from the point of view of a person who's prone to being targeted, there isn't really a difference between "a culture problem" and "a problem with some/few people". (See also Petrie multiplier - a relatively small number of bad apples can make things disproportionately bad for some people.)

@Cascabel That's a good point.

A question like "How can I communicate to a stranger that they should treat their animal better without escalating the situation" would be on topic for this stack. Non-IPS consideration- why not just take him up on on his offer to buy the dog? If you care that much about the dog that you're willing to steal it, a few bucks could ease your conscience. — Link0352 33 secs ago

I guess this is one more time to wish for automatically created per-answer chat rooms, or something similar.

I can make you one.

That's cool, I'm not really desperate to chat.
Just would've used it if available as an alternative to a main chat room or comments :)

Does this comment seem problematic or am I reading too much into it?

My eyes are certainly rolling pretty hard.

I flagged it as a precautionary measure, I would hate to see more nastiness break out on what is (in my opinion) a very good, calm post.

I don't think it's going to result in any moderator action, unless someone takes the bait and engages.
As fitting as it would be to engage on this post, don't.

I had no intention of engaging. Anyway, it's gone now.

@Rainbacon That comment wasn't intended to be directed at you in particular.

6:31 PM
@sphennings Oh, I had assumed it was since there doesn't appear to be too many other people around

It's a fair assumption. TBH half the reason I made it was to discourage me from responding myself.

@Pheo Please do not bring your issues in other rooms/sites into here.

M'kay.

7:59 PM
@Ash Darn it, I just brought in my whole subscription.
I've passed on engaging the farewell as well as well I should
@Rainbacon I'm starting my own version of a curse jar called the "Jargon Jar". Anytime someone says a buzzword like "problematic" it's a dollar (or it's equivalent) into the jar
Hi @Pheo

@RichardU Only if you're going to use the money to organise a get-together bbq. Otherwise, I have to forbid extorting money from other SE chatroom members :P

@Tinkeringbell Given the amount of buzzwords flying around, I could arrange it at the Ritz Carlton

@RichardU I stayed there once for work, it was quite nice

@RichardU No idea what that is, but it sounds great :)

@Tinkeringbell It's an extremely nice hotel chain

8:05 PM
@Tinkeringbell very VERY high class hotel.

Ah. I've got to visit that sometimes then :D
I think I see a vacation coming (Ugh, I hate planning!)

I got thrown out of one once when I was homeless, does that count? I think I pushed it too far when I asked them if they had any Grey Poupon

They gave me a king sized candy bar and a bottle of cola when I checked in.

Looks like I missed a bit of drama recently.
I'm going to have to step up my game if I'm going to retain my title as "official figurehead of menace" around here.

@RichardU You really haven't missed all that much. Meta's been pretty quiet this last week.

8:10 PM
They're all afraid of my awesome mod powers XD

I think enough of the community got tired of the problems on this site that they started taking action to shut things down rather swiftly without requiring mod intervention.

@sphennings Well..... er.... I'm thinking of one post in particular

Let's just keep that out of the room for a little while longer... I love the peace here while it lasts :D

@sphennings that's the way it has to be. If the community won't police itself, the mods aren't going to be worth much, no matter how hard they try
@Tinkeringbell that's all I am going to say about that.
I still want that buzzword jar though.

@RichardU Nice :)
@RichardU 6-8 weeks probably :P
You could make something like cookie clicker? Just click the jar everytime something gets mentioned :)
Or make a buzzword powered bitcoin miner... 10 minutes of mining for every buzzword XD

8:13 PM
Have a hat with bee appear on the person's avatar who had the most buzzwords in a given week.

@RichardU Nah, no naming and shaming

@Tinkeringbell isn't that the culture these days?

@RichardU Not here.

I mean in the broader sense, not the SE

Not on my watch ;)

8:14 PM
Personally, I don't like it anywhere
It's far better to let someone save face.
cause someone to lose face and you've just made an enemy

@RichardU True. It can be hard though, especially if you're trying to solve certain problems and need a third party involved.

@RichardU I'd say it's more complex than that, but it helps to consider what is the purpose of naming and shaming, and whether it actually achieves those ends.

@RichardU should I know you?
NVM I just had a scandal with a couple of people.

It sounds like you're trying to get us to ask about it, when really, you should either be dealing with it with the people who were involved, or letting it go, whichever makes more sense

user15026
We have enough drama in here sometimes ourselves due to the nature of IPS. No need to bring it in from elseplace.

> The user never gives anything back to the community, but only takes.
Just found this in Jeff's blog about suspensions
Does that mean that a moderator could suspend someone for only asking questions and never writing answers?

No, questions give something to the community, as long as they're not awful.

A Q&A can not exist without someone asking questions.

What would constitute only taking from the community and never giving back?

Causing drama, and not writing good posts?

Draining everyone's resources by being unconstructive

8:51 PM
Ah, I would think that would be covered under the other reasons listed

Q: What is the criteria for "The user never gives anything back to the community"

user173320In Jeff's Penalty box blog: he listed reasons for getting suspended: No effort to learn and improve over time This user does not put reasonable effort into the questions they ask of the community. There is little or no evidence of this user learning over time, either in the topic it...

That's a very useful post

A useful framework: anything that furthers the goal of building a repository of high quality Q&A is giving; anything that consumes time and energy from the community without contributing to that goal is taking.

@sphennings A lot of people tend to do this without realising, but phrases like "I'm sorry you feel that way" tend to read like a 'non-apology apology', where it can often feel like remorse hasn't properly been expressed

@Mithrandir24601 "I'm sorry you feel that way" is... not a good thing. You're completely invalidating their feelings.
You're saying that they shouldn't feel the way they feel.

9:23 PM
@Mithrandir24601 I was hoping that asking "What could I do differently in the future?" would indicate a willingness to change my behavior.
I could be wrong but I read their initial comment more as do better next time, rather than, what you did was hurtful and I'd like an apology.

@sphennings Yeah, fair, it's just one of those things that I've found myself doing now and again without realising, possibly out of sheer habit of having to quantify things with 'if this and if that'
(or so I keep telling myself)
