Q: Is it professional to seek new employment after just receiving a job?

HenriI was contacted by a recruiter for a contract position in IT. It wasn't in the particular field I planned on pursuing, but it paid twice as much as my current job at the time. It was stated as a 12 month contract with the possibility for renewal. I've been at the job for 2 months of the contract ...

Q: How to approach being rejected without even having asked out and knowing about it from a third party?

userApparently, I have been rejected being romantic partners. The problem is that I haven't ask her out and didn't have plans in the near term. Which would be fine, but it seems that she informed a friend of mine of said rejection, therefore being a lie. My go to behavior would be to confront the ot...

Q: Is there a subtle way to confront someone?

HenriI joined some friends one night for a dance social. After the lights came on and the social was closing up, I was put in charge of making sure one of my friends made it home safely since he'd been drinking a bit. While getting him something to eat and verifying he got home, I remembered I forgot ...

@Mithrandir seriously, I started to think that either something is wrong or there is really no activity on the main site. :P

@Mithrandir that's really an ELL question
@Tinkeringbell I am more average

@Astralbee I'm saying that in my opinion, this answer doesn't really answers the question as I understood it. That is the reason why I downvoted. If that depends entirely on a single word in the whole post that I didn't even register when I read the answer, then chances are high that the mother will also not understand it correctly either. Hence my downvote and comment on my reasoning. Other people can still upvote proving me wrong. You can ignore my comment if you don't agree with it. I'm just giving a different point of view, feel free to do with it as you see fit. — Imus 1 min ago

Q: Is my friend in love with me?

MarisaFirst of all sorry for the extension but I want to give great details so you know the context better. I have a friend of my age (25 years old right now) who I met around 3 years ago during an exchange which lasted 6 months. During that time we were really close friends. At the beginning we we...

BTW, all. How is hiding panic attacks a social skill?
I have severe panic disorder. The answer is you don't hide them, you get treatment.
shouldn't we VTC that one?

I've been debating that.

@Mithrandir the amount of armchair psychology questions we are getting is disturbing me.
The potential for damage is immense.

@Tinkeringbell I read that article you linked this weekend. It was very good. I think it makes my question a moot point though. It would seem that had I asked it the correct answer would have been "you are interpreting this situation wrong"

@Rainbacon Which can still be a useful answer ;-) I had actually hoped that the article would give you some ideas on how to phrase stuff, not answer the question entirely ;)

1:29 PM
@Tinkeringbell do you think we're getting too many questions that would be best suited for a psychiatric professional??

@RichardU Actually, I'm not thinking much right at the moment. I'm quite tied up, getting used to mod tools, reading stuff on meta and trying to get used to making decisions, in combination with a training in real life ;-)

the mods aren't thinking?! sounds the alarms ALERT ALERT... oh that's what you mean

That's true, it would still be useful. I may still post it knowing what the answer is going to be. It could still be useful to future readers.

I'm still figuring out what to do with the privileges I have suddenly acquired around here. There's a protect button now?!

A J
@Stacey This protect button will appear when there are more than one low quality answers from 1-rep users or at least one spam or R/A answer. If you see a question getting LQPs or attracting Spam or R/A answers, feel free to hit that Protect button. Though automated script also works in case when there are more than one Spam or R/A answers on a question.

Clearly some of us agree with your moral stance, but quality standards still apply. Stripped of meta-commentary and profanity this is a one-line answer: "Tell him his behavior is repugnant and he can't attend." To improve it you would need to expand and provide reasoning, explanation of how to implement it, etc. — Em C 17 secs ago

Hey, how do you guys feel about the color scheme here: pheoonewhomade.github.io. Don't worry about the content and such, unless you have real questions. I am asking this here because I know and trust you guys. I am just asking about the color scheme.

@Pheo I was expecting a rainbow, and wanted to say "reminds me of the last time I ate too much candy" Nicely done
Although I like it blacker

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I would too, but the only "blacker" theme is a mockup of a computer terminal... not very user-friendly.
But thanks!

@Pheo Is that just a veiled attempt to push your bot again? :P That site is using the Jekyll slate theme, so you don't have direct control of the color scheme without changing the theme entirely.

@ArtOfCode No it is not. I am genuinely asking about the color scheme. I thought about pinging you without welcome to tell you that, but figured that would look suspicious.

@Pheo note the tongue, he was kidding

7:38 PM
@ArtOfCode And as for the "direct control of the color theme" I have that. Doesn't matter that it is Jekyll

And talking with his tongue out

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ :P

So it'd be more realistically "ith thath jutht a vellld attempth tho push youaaa both agai"

@Pheo You can change the theme, sure, but you can't directly edit CSS and get total control of every instance of every color... unless I'm missing something really big about Pages' Jekyll
I know Charcoal's site uses Jekyll and has a totally custom design and CSS, but that's because it doesn't use themes.

@ArtOfCode I can do better. I can extract the result and reverse engineer it and change the css.

7:40 PM
or rather, uses a custom theme

@ArtOfCode all I need is right here... view-source:pheoonewhomade.github.io
facepalm copy that view-source: part too

eeeeh
probably mostly works in this case, but reverse-engineering from HTML source doesn't, in general, get you the server source

@ArtOfCode Every instance of color? Oh look: pheoonewhomade.github.io/assets/css/style.css its right there!
But I'm done arguing that point for now.

...you're not arguing that point, you're completely missing it

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Keep that site open. I'm going to change the site and I want you to see the difference.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ M'kay reload it now.

7:55 PM
@Pheo noice. Now feels like it needs more content

Yeh it does feel skinnyer

Q: In non-violent communication, what to do when "I feel..." statements fail?

Em CNon-Violent Communication seems to be a common piece of advice when it comes to conflict resolution. So far as I understand, NVC promotes the use of "I-statements": saying things like, I feel X when you Y rather than, You made me X! This sounds great in theory: you only talk about thi...

@ExtrovertedMainMan ^ attempt at asking a more skills-based question..

11:25 PM
Looks good. :)
It's odd... I've heard that you're supposed to avoid using "you" at all in "I" statements. "I don't like it when you...." etc... but none of the reading I did after seeing your question supported that.

user15026
I always heard that they were to be of the I feel x when y happens or I feel x when you do y sorts of phrasing

Maybe that's the difference... the "I don't like it when you"... is the problem... more than "I feel ___ when you..."

@Catija hooray :)
I am definitely open to the possibility I was doing it wrong in the question examples too. I am still learning about this stuff :)

11:44 PM
I think that the problem may be more that this format is designed for a mediated situation where both parties are expected to "behave" in the interest of sharing and learning.
For example, I've heard it used a lot in couple's therapy... so you have the therapist training both parties on how to use it. Someone who doesn't want to participate in an honest sharing of feelings isn't going to be someone you can really use it with.

@EmC The "responses" section of the wiki you linked to may be helpful.

@Catija hmm, that is a good point. I did notice when I was reading about it that most examples seemed to assume cooperation
> Bitschnau further suggests that the use of NVC is unlikely to allow everyone to express their feelings and have their needs met in real life as this would require inordinate time, patience and discipline.
lol
