I'd say that it's pretty hard to "disagree with a sexual orientation" without being a bigot, given that whether or not someone has a sexual orientation isn't an opinion and denying people the opportunity to love another is pretty much always "threating them with hatred or intolerance" — Erik 47 secs ago

@Tinkeringbell good afternoon. :)
@Tinkeringbell dunno. I was sleeping. ;)

the last few questions have had such appalling english I did not really feel like bothering to try and fix them :/ far too much effort when it affects even the paragraph structure

@Jesse You have to.. that's what being nice is. Although if they're on hold, don't until the necessary details are added or provided in comments, so they don't end up in the reopen queue still in bad shape

A J
@Mithrandir How come a bot get to talk with two rep only? It's a user after all.

@AJ Explicit write access. Room owners can grant that, just like mods.
Go to room, manage access and you'll see ;)

7:45 AM
No, only mods can grant if the user has less than 20 rep.

Really? I'm going to try :P
On the meta bot ;-)

I've tried ;)
With one sock as RO and another with no rep.

Oh... That's kinda disappointing ;-)

@Tinkeringbell I have to ehh? Editing every single word of a question may be a nice thing, but its not mutually exclusive :D I can not do it and still be nice

@Jesse :) Just saying :P We kinda could use more people doing those edits
You've always been nice as far as I'm concerned, although if new people drop in here and see someone calling their English appalling it might not be very inviting ;-) If you think something needs a spell-check and you don't have the time/will to do so, it might be better to drop a link and ask someone to do it ;-)
For those that hadn't figured it out already: I'm really nitpicky on the chat culture right now, and I realise I've often make the same mistakes myself... Feel free to mention my faults to me too!

7:58 AM
To ask, or not to ask... That is the question.

Huh? Toying with a question for main?
Or do you want to ask someone out? :P

@Tinkeringbell That's commendable. Keeping the chat friendly at all times is a must if we want to encourage new users to participate more here. I've also seen you welcoming lurkers with a ping, I like that ( I used to lurk here for more than a week before I wrote my first line here )

Yeah, the one I mentioned about declining food and Russian culture.
@Tinkeringbell gaaaaccckkk

@Mithrandir Better? :P
@Mithrandir I ... must have missed that ;)
@Cashbee Yeah, I try to... You don't think it's too intimidating?

@Tinkeringbell No I would have loved it if I were being welcomed before I said anything. I did not know if it was ok for me to participate in chat, or if I was even allowed here
(I have not participated in any chat on other stacks)

I forget: are "what is the Russian etiquette for declining food when visiting people for their birthdays" type questions on topic here?

Everyone is allowed on a site's main chatroom, provided they have 20 reputation points.
@Mithrandir I'd go with ... 'Is there' first. What makes you think there is one?

I'm just not sure I can ask the question in a way that it would meet my own standards :P

Apr 12 at 13:32, by Cashbee
@Mithrandir maybe don't ask what the etiquette is, but rather if there is one.

That sounds familiar. I have noticed the same problem here lately ;-)

Apr 12 at 13:33, by Cashbee
@Mithrandir and if there is no russian etiquette, what is the "standard" etiquette for such a case
what are your standards then? :D

8:08 AM
(Oh, and considering that question prompted my new meta question.)
@Cashbee very strict. For answers as well.
...I've cast over 800 downvotes, that should prove my point :P

@Mithrandir I like that

Q: Should we rename our country tags to be cultural tags?

Arwen UndómielWe have several country or location tags - e.g. india, russia - as an attempt to get questions to specify what culture they're from, because cultural norms are inherently relevant to interpersonal issues. But we also encourage using these tags when it's not taking place in, e.g., India, but thos...

(Side note: It'd be nice if some more of the answers I downvote could get deleted. As it is, I'm going to lose my rep :P)

That's ... unsettling. You want everything that's downvote worthy to be deleted? Or you only downvote stuff that's deletable?

The vast majority of what I downvote I also flag.

@Mithrandir i provided a yes-answer for your meta question ;)
I stated a fact that I don't know if it's true :O
> The main reason why the country tags exist is for the answerers to deduce the culture from it.
if that is not the case please tell me :)

9:25 AM
@Cashbee I think this has been true for a long time, but I like what OldPadawan said too... and personally, I don't give that much about tags as about a description of the cultural/societal norms involved :D
Because 'deduce' leaves a lot of room for interpretation, and it can vary across 1 country a lot. Should I raise a 'Gelderland' tag, just because norms here may be different from the 'Randstad'?
(And hello @avazula, nice to see you found the chatroom! Welcome, this is the place where you can chat and discuss stuff with other users from this community. If it's important though, please put it on meta. You'll also see people practicing smalltalk from time to time ;) )

@Tinkeringbell this is a completely different issue. (Are the country/culture tags too general? should we split them up more?)

True, true ;) I'm just worried OldPadawan's answer might be interpreted as something that'll fix that :P
It's a caveat to culture/location tags in general :)

I find his solution to be too complicated and no user will know the difference between the two tags, they will always use the wrong one

@Cashbee That's true...

I just think that the actual location is less important than the culture. And if OP deems his location to be important, he can still mention it in hie Q

9:31 AM
(Which is why it's best to put it in the question :P) But like you said, that's a different issue. Although it might be an argument to do nothing about the tags :P

@Tinkeringbell nicely done btw ;) sad that it didnt work
but they will be back

@Cashbee Yeah, that's why I think it might be too intimidating... I see a lot of people drop out after pinging em.
I tried to keep in mind what you said earlier :D
@Cashbee I hope so :)

@Tinkeringbell yes i could see that. If your experience tells you otherwise, don't listen to me and don't ping ^^

9:45 AM
@Tinkeringbell A lot of people maybe just like to hover, waiting to get used to it and for something they feel qualified to jump in on - I mean, I'm around a reasonable amount but (relatively) rarely actively participate

@Mithrandir24601 When someone greets you directly, is that not something they feel qualified to jump in on ?

@Cashbee Well, I'd tend to be like "aaahh, someone I've never spoken to before in an environment I don't really know!" run away, over "Oh, new person - hello new person!"
(I'm exaggerating for effect, but hopefully that gets the gist across :P)

Q: Tips to maintain composure and be there for my dad

ok, so it kind of forces the person to either respond or go away. I see how that prevents them from just lurking and deciding for themselves when the time is right to jump in. Could indeed be counterproductive, but it depends on the said person.

Hi @Tinkeringbell! I'm glad to be here! I've already seen it before but I didn't know how to use the chatroom, so I didn't dare talking :)

I've been around IPS for almost a year now and it's impressive how my vision of social life has changed! I now have way more resources to remain nice when getting annoyed :)

This site can certainly change people.

@avazula yeah I know what you mean!
I often ask myself what would @Tinkeringbell do :D
what happened to anongoodnurse anyway? i always found her answers to be very good

@avazula I've seen that remark made more often. I'll consider changing the room description from funny quote to actually useful ;)

Oh no @Tinkeringbell, I actually assumed that because of the conversations that were going on. I like that quote :)

@Cashbee she moderates one of the SE sites with me. It does take up some time that otherwise could be used to answer questions

Fair enough @RoryAlsop
Being active on a SE site actually takes some time :)

It does seem to, yes :-)

I have a question on a recent post where the OP is quite talkative about the problem that motivates him/her to ask on IPS:
@avazula That's essentially what I'm asking for, I went into detail to give an idea of how I normally react to this sort of bad news, and to say what the bad news that I'm expecting is. Should I cut most of this out? — Violet Flare 1 min ago
IMHO, her explanation is very detailed but seems to shade his/her actual question. I asked OP to clarify, and now he/she asks me if the explanation should be cut off for most of it.
Could narrowing down the explanation help making the question more on-topic ?

@Cashbee yup, I'd agree with that :)

Yeah - I'd delete 90% of that. Sure, it's very distressing, but to ask the question it just isn't needed

10:20 AM
@DoritoStyle There is a cultural context BTW. From my own experience in French workplaces, oral agreements don't worth much. An agreement is written or does not really exist. — Berthim 1 min ago

Q: How to deal with moody friend?

DanielI have one friend whom I get along with great ... most of the time. We see each other about 1-3 times per week, sometimes together with other friends and he is generally a pleasant person to be around - even if he is also generally quite self-centered and does not take critique too well. @AJ she? OK, will get a while to get genders right

11:50 AM
@sphennings Hi! Thanks for the answer ... So my intuition was right aha

Are there any posts on meta about deescalating chat?

@AJ he looks like a nerd, come on

@sphennings Aside from timeout the room or kick mute people.. not really I guess

@avazula we also have IPS comment bot that posts comments that it identifies as potentially unnecessary, based on some very simple patterns matching.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ use they and dont bother is what I learnt

11:52 AM
@SurajRao Just learnt about singular they couple of days ago! Don't think it's pretty but it's so useful!

@SurajRao I do use singular they a lot, but not with people I chat a lot, mister . . . Um . . . Miss Suraj Rao

@Tinkeringbell sorry I meant comments.

Is Suraj a boy name or a girl?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ boy.. Common one in India

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Maybe we're not binary humans, but a superior intelligence who doesn't get the concept of genders? :O

11:54 AM
@avazula huh.. didnt know it was called that. I assumed the pronoun would be 'it'.

We've had a lot of massive comment threads recently. I'm thinking of what non mods can do to deescalate them.

Nope, not on meta yet.... Although de-escalate sounds a bit like they're very nasty too

@SurajRao I'd thought the same, but someone (I'm wondering if it was @sphennings actually?) told me that it's called that way

@avazula it's awesome once they . . . you get used to it
hic they
hic hic

it is very derogatory when used as a pronoun for a human, no matter what gender they are.

11:56 AM
Wiki: singular they
Wait, what was the syntax?

@SurajRao "it" is generally used for non humans. Calling someone it can be a very dehumanizing speech act.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ You got it right, it's singular they

No, I mean the chatbot's syntax

@Cashbee There are exceptions I know one person who requests it as a pronoun.

@sphennings ohk... Good to know
