And there's one deleted.

(oh, sidenote: check if the user has close-vote privileges before commenting? Somehow it would be a bit mean to expect someone that hasn't even earned those to understand?)
Sorry @Snow, we're trying something new :P

Ok, so now we have to delete answers for questions that subsequently get closed. This just makes me reticent about answering questions at all now.

No, they don't have to be deleted... just hopefully try to prevent users from answering close-worthy questions. Just try to avoid answering questions that need to be closed.

@Snow No, you don't have to delete them, we just want that info out there... we've got a bit of a problem with users answering bad questions.... And we can't treat people differently ... :/ Hopefully, it will lead to a better community culture amongst our higher rep users ....

If a question is getting multiple downvotes and requests for info... that's usually a good sign that you shouldn't answer it.

2:03 PM
^ Exactly.

No, it's a good sign that the question needs fixing, if at all possible.

@Snow But why answer before that? It won't give an incentive to fix...

Yes. And questions that need fixing shouldn't be answered until after they're fixed.

@Tinkeringbell go ahead.

in The Reading Room, Feb 14 '17 at 6:22, by BESW
@Shokhet I like closing new users' questions when they can be fixed with a quick edit. It gives them an easy, rewarding first experience with the close process because it gets resolved so painlessly.

2:05 PM
An so IPS joins the lest of stacks where serving the stack becomes far more important than helping people.
I don't agree with this, so I'll let you guys carry on with it.

@Snow At the end of the day, the best way to help people is to make sure that we can answer it well. And that means that sometimes we have to close questions until they're fixed, and close-worthy questions shouldn't be answered until after they're fixed.
It's not very useful to the OP if we answer with an entirely different situation in mind than what's actually going on because they didn't include enough details.

@Snow We're still beta, we need a community and a voting culture. Don't go saying we don't help people. I've edited more questions than written them myself :/ I like the principle of 'a quick edit to help the OP getting going'.... I'm sorry to disappoint you again, but right now the voting culture is a bigger problem than people not getting the help they deserve.

@Snow the "if at all possible" is operative here and most of the time the answer is not without a miracle

o_o

(tries to decide if I should initiate suicidal prevention measures or not)

That comment needs to go, at the least

sounds like copypasta
@Tinkeringbell comment is gone

@Snow It doesn't help someone to answer a question they aren't asking.

user11500My father is one of the most inhumane person I have ever known in my whole life. I think he is probably one of the most neurotic person in the world. I have suffered mental and physical torture and brutality from him and he has tried to break me to the best of his ability but I only became more p...

@Snow It's better to empower them so that they can effectively ask for help in the future.

2:18 PM
@Catija can you ... uh I don't know what y'all do in situations like these but can you do it? for the question above

@Mithrandir, would it be a nice thing to do to ask users to come to chat if they want to better understand our site scope (or refer to the help page or something)... For that latest autocomment?
Maybe we should somehow stop the downvotes? :/

@Snow There are solid arguments for both sides, we need to be mindful to maintain quality without getting so pedantic that we run the community into the ground.

@Tinkeringbell That's an interesting idea but the question does meet the criteria for downvoting.

@Mithrandir so copypasta

2:22 PM
It's a balancing act.

@Magisch Oh okay... not so bad.

@Tinkeringbell wat

don't upvote bad content because it might make the poster feel bad
too far

Do not upvote to keep the score at 0.

@Mithrandir That's from meta (and was looked up before I realized the copy-pasta thing)...
That's no longer relevant ;)

2:23 PM
Oh.

:42421259 Please don't upvote to counter balance... It's counter productive.

You had posted two messages.
I had assumed they were related.
But apparently not.

@sphennings It does now that I know that it's copy-pasta ;)
@apaul I was thinking of this, but it's not that ;) I never upvote bad questions, but it's suggested here that if someone needs professional help, to keep the question score at zero: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1374/…
If we want to change that, we might want to revisit that meta.

@Tinkeringbell Feel free. I'm not going to expend a lot of effort explaining it to every user again and again, though.

@Mithrandir I was just thinking about the blatantly off-topic ones, we could edit in a link to the help center once Catija is content with her excellent meta post ;)
@Mithrandir Now I'm not really following you, but since I already decided the thing wasn't relevant ;)

2:27 PM
one about the autocomments, the other about the abusive father pos

Oh yeah, they weren't really related ;) ^ Exactly :)
Sorry. I should really link more ;)

So... I've had a somewhat disturbing morning. I'm thinking about asking a question about the situation, but I'm unsure about how to word it to avoid a crap storm on the main site.

@apaul Should I start building a moat again?

Aparently my eldest stepson has been getting indoctrinated by the far right online... Mostly through memes and YouTube videos.
@Mithrandir possibly... ?

@apaul That sounds rough. How old is your stepson?

2:34 PM

sounds like collateral damage
not a lot you can do there

@apaul Oh dear.... any chance of leaving out the 'far right'... --> You could just focus on 'I'm worried about the internet giving him false hope/ideas'?

Q: Hearing burglar alarm of neighboor

C.NorrisI moved recently to a new apartment with my gf. When we are in the bedroom we can hear a burglar alarm (or another ultrasound like this). The sound isn't really loud but it's enough for beiing disturbing the night (and keep me awake). I already met neighbours for asking if sound came from them, ...

@Tinkeringbell Unfortunately I think the specific ideologies are apart of the issue and possible solutions...

@apaul In one sentence what are you trying to ask?

2:36 PM
VTC: Unclear
What is your goal here?

I have a hunch a question like this will instantly turn into grandstanding and a politics debate on main

Probably.

@Magisch I think that's highly dependent upon the specifics of the question.

@sphennings How to separate fact from propaganda? Or more specifically... How to get a 16 year old autistic to recognize that there's an agenda behind the content he's seeing?
I think the specific ideologies involved are relevant because people are targeting kids like him.

@apaul I think you could speak of generalities on that one since everyone is claiming that the people they don't agree with have an agenda.
@apaul I think you may be also concerned if other predatory ideologies were targeting your son.
@apaul I guess it really depends on whether you're trying to start a conversation about thinking critically about the news in general, or specifically about the news that your son is consuming.

2:43 PM
Sort of a "are you young and socially awkward, and frequently rejected by women? Blame the feminists!"
@sphennings It's not really news though. It's stuff woven into video game YouTube channels and memes.
Brb

The 'feminists' get blamed here too...

I marvel how this forums can be an outlet for crazy people and how the feminist crowd is active here. Since is it a crime looking at someone? Gosh. — Rui F Ribeiro just now
in The Closet, Jan 7 at 19:39, by Smelly
if she's a feminist she only has herself to blame, lol. — user1450877 just now

@apaul That's particularly rough. I wish I had some advice to give you. I can say that a decade ago when I discovered PUA forums I had a moment where I almost bought into the adversarial rhetoric. Unfortunately what worked for me then isn't relevant to your son now.

So uh, are we punishing people for disagreeing with close votes now? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/9404/…

@Mithrandir @catija d'you think it'd be worth adding these at interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/1609/31 ?
@EmC No. We're discouraging users from answering close-worthy questions.

@EmC Is it too harsh?

2:54 PM
@apaul is it redpill?
it's redpill isn't it

@Tinkeringbell Downvoting seems harsh, yes

@Mithrandir I think it might be better to put the notice underneath the question instead of each answer? Might feel less like a personal thing?

@Mithrandir We're not a hive-mind here

@Tinkeringbell Commenting under the answers insures that they see it.

I've answered questions that others later put on-hold, because I felt the question was answerable as is

2:56 PM
We've got some pretty well-defined guidelines for when to close a question by now. If you still decide to answer...

@EmC Not saying I didn't... But I lately noticed people answering things and getting upvotes for it after things were closed ... So I decided to be a bit more pro-active since it was bothering me... :/

I'll just repeat this:
53 mins ago, by Mithrandir
If a question is getting multiple downvotes and requests for info... that's usually a good sign that you shouldn't answer it.

I only asked if it was technically allowed, not if everybody would join me

@Tinkeringbell Fair enough
the auto comment makes it sound like you two are carrying out official policy
idk it's jarring to go on main and see, yet again, a couple users decided to take up a new moderating stance in chat
> Also note that if the answer has a positive score, the question will not be automatically deleted by the roomba.

this isn't a problem until the question is unsalvageable and we want it deleted

The roomba won't delete it for a few days anyway. If it's on-hold that long... it's probably not salvageable.

3:03 PM
@Mithrandir right: so why dv/comment answers immediately after it's on hold. if it gets reopened, comment to let them know to update. if it stays closed, comment to ask them to delete so the question can be deleted

@EmC thats how policy is formed

Because they shouldn't have answered it if it was close-worthy.

it seems like you're assuming these answers were in bad faith and need to be punished

some people start doing something, arguments on meta are had, others adapt

@Magisch Policy should be on meta

3:04 PM
right
but everyone is free to use their votes as they please
so if people decided it was fine to DV-to-deletion an answer so the question becomes deletion eligible they can do that afaik

alright. I'm done arguing

@EmC No, not in bad faith. Perhaps in ignorance. Perhaps because they disagreed that it should be closed. Perhaps because they care more about answering the question than the welfare of the site. It doesn't matter.
If that autocomment needs refinement, please feel free to chime in. I wrote it in 20 seconds and didn't think about it too much.
I'll note also that policy is also determined by what people are actually doing.

@Magisch I'm not really sure, just scratched the surface while driving him to school this morning, still need to dig deeper to find out the specifics.

..Judging by the amount of unanswered requests for more info in the comments here, I'd say that closing would be fine.

@apaul main question is what do you want
you need to decide what you're hoping to accomplish before you can ask
getting someone out of that mindset is extremely hard and often only happens with serious willingess to introspection

3:38 PM
@Magisch I'm hoping that he's still developing his ideas about these things. I'll hold off till I have a better picture of the situation.

Q: Dealing with a friend who takes everything seriously

ThatOtherGuyMy question is similar to this one but the details are a little different. I have a friend D who takes things too seriously. Examples include: In our group (me, them and another friend O) we would often lightly tease each other. We never try to be mean. Myself and O take it in stride but when...

No, we decided to try something new. We didn't take up a new moderating stance, and it was never our intention to make it a policy. Given the amount of push-back this received, I'll be writing a meta tonight.

Sometimes, it's better to try stuff instead of putting it on meta and not seeing anything happen at all.... :/ I do believe that you have a point, we received more negative feedback on that attempt.

I do however am still of the opinion that something needs to be done to get the voting culture going again and that we have a problem here > More to follow in the meta.

4:18 PM
Encouraging people to avoid answering off topic questions is a network-wide issue, really... it's not something specific to this site and new in any way. Every site I've used has had to go through the learning process of teaching their users that off topic questions should not be answered. Because we're still to some degree figuring out our scope, it's understandable that there may be some confusion about what is and is not on topic...

4:29 PM
So, was commenting that comment and downvoting stuff the wrong way of 'getting attention'?

I'd really like to see some more people in chat, there's a lot of people with privileges that you never see here, that are never asking a question... I also don't really see those people active on meta (or they must be just up and downvoting)....
I just wanted to get some attention, see people asking questions, get the voting culture going a bit more...

4:49 PM
@Tinkeringbell How else does one bring attention to a question?

Not really a question we're discussing here, but people well past the limit of close-voting privileges answering close-worthy questions instead of commenting and closing ... :/

It to me also seems closely related to the fastest gun in the west syndrome, people hastening to write an answer to get as much rep as possible without thinking about the consequences... I'd really like to make them aware that there are negative consequences to answering a lot of such questions....
And educate them on how to recognize a good one and a bad one

@Tinkeringbell What are the negative consequences of answering as many questions as one can assuming they are decent questions and the answer is useful?

Although after all that's discussed here, I don't know if that's what the community wants anymore.
@IamSoNotListening So, I want to train people to assume better.

@Tinkeringbell I sure hope that what the community wants is not being decided by just a handful of users.

@IamSoNotListening Answering questions that don't meet our standards encourages users to continue to post sub-par questions because they know that despite the fact that their contributions don't meet the standards, they'll get an answer anyway. Also note that if the answer has a positive score, the question will not be automatically deleted by the roomba. Answering off-topic/low-quality questions encourages low-quality contributions and brings down the quality level of the site.

4:56 PM
What specifically peeves me right now though is that I see people commenting but not vtc-ing, and answering without being provided said details.
@IamSoNotListening Which is why I am pondering another meta instead of hammering this out in chat ;)

@Tinkeringbell LOL
@Mithrandir How does the voting mechanism fail here. I don't see why this is such a big deal. Maybe this site get's more crap, errr, questionable questions than others.

I fail to see how that's relevant.
If users are answering questions that aren't a good fit for the site, that's harmful to the site.
How does the voting mechanism apply here?

@Mithrandir Ok, let me re-phrase. We have a voting mechanism, where we can mark a question as should be closed and then down vote said question without penalty. three of those should take the question off the main page. This works pretty well on the two other sites I am active on. Why does it fail here?

Why are you saying that it fails here?

@IamSoNotListening It did fail today. I vtc + downvote. Others just answer and upvote. So we have a problem

5:02 PM
Your comment regarding the automated process of collecting the garbage fails.
@Tinkeringbell I don't know how you solve that problem. That is a community problem.

@IamSoNotListening Which is what the meta is going to be about ;)
My suggestion was, to get attention, dv and comment something like that on the answer...
And apparently not everyone is happy with it.
I tried, I failed.

Also, I would point out, that in general ( not talking about obvious garbage ) a questions usefulness IS opinion based. IF more people find it useful then don't what does that say?

Now it's back to the drawing board.

@Tinkeringbell I wish you good luck.

@IamSoNotListening Then, why isn't there more discussion about reopening things? Some of the users I'm trying to reach do have reopen privileges as well already...
Like I said, we do have a community problem and I'm just trying stuff to fix it, and I just got reigned in. I'm too enthusiastic sometimes

5:05 PM
@Mithrandir this is opinion based in most cases, right. I am not referring to obvious garbage here...

No. We have established policies for when we close a question.

I don't have much clout here, I will contribute where I can.
@Mithrandir IMHO those policies are being totally ignored or are to ambiguous.

Them being ignored is what we're attempting to rectify.

@IamSoNotListening And I'm hoping it's neither, and that a little 'education' will go a long way.... :/

@Mithrandir I would focus on the ambiguous part. Clarity will go a long way, IMHO.

@Mithrandir Ignored implies some premeditation/knowledge of them IMO... So it might be a bit strong of an expression

Fine, *not being applied would probably be a better way of expressing it.

@Catija A late answer but since I obviously saw that question and only upvoted, just saying that I'm not good at writing text like those required there so I generally refrain from posting suggestions. Okay, so after all the ruckus from today, have another meta:

NVZ
Watch this: I insist. youtube.com/watch?v=NjRnyFBexq0

@NVZ So why am I listening to it? Is it related to that meta I wrote? Do you think it would earn better answers if it rhymes?

Yes.

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell It was not to you. I just pop up with videos.

At least, you'll get more votes if it's in rhyme ;)

8:26 PM
@NVZ Oh.... thank goodness :)
@Mithrandir hah, well, it's editable, feel free. I'm not big on the rhymes, and certainly not in English. I don't know how to pronounce half of the words I write, so my rhyming isn't right :)

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell I'm surprised you're surprised. I have been around for a while, and I'm sure everyone knows that I chime in with some random ideas or videos to share. :)

a.) I still don't have enough rep to edit b.) nah, not worth it for a serious discussion :P

@NVZ Hmmm, twas just the timing on this one I guess... just after I mentioned the meta ;) I know you usually do it when it's awkwardly silent ;)

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell Look past the rhymes; there's a tragic story behind.. do listen to it, if you have the time; and my sharing it, I hope you don't mind.

@NVZ I listened to it. I agree the story is tragic... I'm not so fond of the way it's delivered though... Seems a bit overdramatic to me.
You can share, although I do hope it won't lead to another gender war in here... ;)

Q: How to get a better sense of community going?

TinkeringbellI recently noticed a few things that made me worry about the community here. I basically started asking myself if there is one, and if there is, if it's not just a too small clique of users. I noticed: Some questions that are getting close- and downvotes also being upvoted and answered. This...

NVZ
@IntrovertedMetaMan. Oh, man. Missed you, IntroMan.

@NVZ Okay, not wars...but pretty fierce discussions ;)

NVZ
8:41 PM
@Tinkeringbell We should welcome discussions, I think. Discussions lead to ideas. Ideas can change lives. :)

9:12 PM
@NVZ Those kind of discussions are for the court of public opinion, for which an SE chatroom might not be the best of venues ;)

9:37 PM
You know... D.Hutchinson's comments about my age have led me to consider asking a question here: "How do I effectively get people to look past my age when considering my abilities, if they know how old I am?"
What do you people think?

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell There are levels to any discussion. We are having one now. Not everything has to go to courts of public opinions. :)

@NVZ I think that when she says fierce discussions she means the ones that tend to.

NVZ
@TheTinyMan I know, but did we ever have any that fierce?

@NVZ Oh, yes.

NVZ
@TheTinyMan About what?
@Mithrandir Ask.

9:42 PM
@NVZ I think I will leave that to someone more delicate than I. :-P Like @Tinkeringbell once she wakes back up in the morning.
