5:14 PM
Hey

ho?

Hey

ho!

Am not.

:/

5:19 PM
:D
Sorry to disappoint ;)

You wish ;)

5:32 PM
@Catija Hey :)

By the way... the reference I was failing to make: youtube.com/watch?v=HypOHRuVi8E

5:45 PM
Oh, I was guessing the dwarven song from Snow White

That's "hi ho" :P

hmm, the dutch version is hee ho, pronounced like hey ho
so there you go :)

6:15 PM
@Snow Although, on most sites, research is important, I don't think we ever made it explicitly a policy here. Of course, setting aside the help pages... Most questions can be answered by googling, but that's not what we want at the moment. We want quality content now that can later be used as the first research for others to use before asking their questions.

6:32 PM
@Mithrandir Do you have a reference on that? I'd like to read up...
@NVZ Don't bother, they're not coming back soon I think.

user15026
@apaul I still need to try this - I am scared it will be like Weeds and ONITB, where I like it at first until it becomes a misery carnival

user15026
@Tinkeringbell Moana is excellent if you've not seen it

I like moana a lot.

@apaul Meh... I think Snow was pretty right: deleted the answer as a precaution, asked for guidance in chat and when there was none, took the advice of writing a meta... You really weren't making friends :/
@Ash Is that on Netflix?
Or should I get my parrot, hook and hat?

user15026
@Tinkeringbell It is here, not sure about elsewhere

user15026
6:41 PM
Also Inside Out is also good if you've not seen that. It's also on Netflix here at least.

@Ash I'll dive into it :D

user15026
:D

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell They should. I pinged them. My pings are precious gifts, and are not to be neglected. :P

@Tinkeringbell Eh, looked more like users throwing stones back and forth than a real issue. Also any angle on it has been extensively covered on Meta SE

@apaul Link? Otherwise I'm going to put up a meta myself again.... It might be good to have it lying around...

NVZ
6:49 PM
...

g'morning :)

@Tinkeringbell Research effort and plagiarism and so on are pretty well worked over.

Although these triple dots I leave around looks dull, in my head, I play Beethoven's ta ta ta taa whenever I post them. youtu.be/wFQK7NPUbZQ?t=18s

Yeah but this is not about 'do we want links if your answer is from another site'.... this is about 'can I ask something for which the answer is easily googled'... I'm looking through the newest questions for research effort on meta now...

I found a meta on movies (they sometimes have questions that can be googled easily) but that's from '11.
Parenting doesn't have anything on this subject, neither does Workplace really.... Any other more subjective sites where I might take a look?

@Catija And I have a very long answer on Scifi.SE about it ;)

Q: Embrace the non-Googlers

SampsonThere seems to be a knee-jerk reaction to "easy" questions that involve quickly answering by copy/pasting embarrassing links to lmgtfy.com (or similar responses in comments, which aren't downvotable) in an attempt to belittle the questions' authors. I think this comes from engagement in forums, w...

Q: Should we embrace non-Googlers?

BESWCommon Stack Network policy is to embrace non-Googlers. The Stack Exchange wants to be a place Google sends folks, not a place that sends folks to Google. Unfortunately, many sites and some of our users feel the downvote reason "does not show any research effort" is synonymous with "did not try ...

7:00 PM
@Mithrandir huh?

A self-promotion. Complete with winky.

But why ping me?

It was a reply to that message...

I'm on mobile so I can't see what is a reply to what... but I wasn't talking about people not googling... either that or I've been sleep chatting.

NVZ
@Catija It was a reply to an earlier msg of yours about Moana, I presume

user15026
7:04 PM
@Catija He was replying to your mention of Moana and referring to his giant magical super good answer he made to a Moana question

user15026
(seriously, it was a thing of beauty and research, @Mithrandir)

Oh.

NVZ
I see how the contexts got mixed up.
I see everything...

@Ash (thank you)

NVZ
@Mithrandir Erm... you're welcome. :P

7:06 PM
I had one of those mornings where you get to work and everything is broken and you're the person who needs to fix it but there's nothing you can do because it's something else's fault.

NVZ
@Catija That's everyday here.

@Mithrandir Thanks, that's helping me more than my meta search on research effort

... I think I lacked assertiveness with some of my bad students (e.g. those who deliberately miss class, hand in homework late, need make-up quizzes for ridiculous reasons because they know I'll agree to it) last semester and want to be more assertive this semester with my new bunch ... would that be a good IPS question?

Hmmm... has a very tight overlap with academia if you ask me? (I think I've seen some questions on 'how to get students to file their homework' over there too...)

From the two sentences I'm getting here is that it's either intrapersonal or more for academia?
Why haven't you asked the 'brother' one yet? I thought we had agreed that that could be fitted into the IPS scope ;)

7:19 PM
eh ... I was thinking not academia.se, since, truly, my mind is made up: I would like to decline late homeworks, deny make-up quizzes, in order to protect my good students that do everything right. It's just ... how to do this ... and how to be assertive ...when the bad students inevitably ask for favors :(
sorry, I got lazy last night - was gonna write the 'brother' question but did some bedtime reading instead :)
I'll get on that today, when I hit up the coffee shop later

@Catija I used to kind of enjoy those days in a previous firm. Diagnose the issue, then spend the morning persuading the relevant service provider to follow your guidance and fix it, then waiting till their diagnosis confirmed what you had said, and then finally fixing it at end of day.

So, it would be a saying-no question ... hmmm... Might work, but be prepared that the first version may be closed and you may need to rework some things in order to get it fully IPS fit

yeah ... ok, cool - thanks :)

(Or just dump the first draft in here and ask for feedback, before posting)

Girlfriend: "Why is everything so complicated?" Me: "Because you have a problem with authority."

7:27 PM
Flowers and chocolate and be quick about it

@Tinkeringbell Nah xD

hey, you want a solution or not? :P

@Tinkeringbell Haha, her problem is that she wants to do something her way for the LARP we play in and when the people running the game said "we'll think about it, give us a day," she wanted me to use my admin powers to do the thing anyways
and I'm like "...let's wait for their okay first..."

@TheTinyMan You're being way too reasonable
It's your girlfriend, come on. Do you want to keep her or not?

@Tinkeringbell Oh, boy. :-P Learning more and more about you all the time...

7:35 PM
@TheTinyMan Just trying to find out how gullible you really are :P

@Tinkeringbell flips his hair

@TheTinyMan Can't argue with that, mine is up in a ponytail again :P

@Tinkeringbell Shouldn't you be bedridden or something? ;-)

@TheTinyMan I have this amazing reclining desk chair. And yes, I am still wearing two sets of clothing and 2 blankets. But I refuse to lie flat like I don't have any muscle control left. I've been bored the whole day, just lemme have fun tonight?

@Tinkeringbell NO! No fun, or we'll have to get you-know-who in here!

7:39 PM
@TheTinyMan Who? Voldemort? I think there's an user with that nickname, but I would expect them to be over at SciFi or Lit...

@Tinkeringbell Hey, @Catija, I think you've just been called Voldemort.

@Mithrandir I have a flu. I'm not delusional. I can still distinguish between things :P

@Tinkeringbell Apparently not! :o

7:54 PM
@Tinkeringbell sippin on that sizzurp?

@Mithrandir sigh

:D
(psst, I think I have a talent for bugging Catija)

@Mithrandir ...

Confirmation.
I'll just... step over here.

@Mithrandir It's not difficult ;)

8:03 PM
... :( You all just hate me... I'm going to go and cry in a corner somewhere...

@Catija Awww! We don't hate you - after all, you always hurt the one you love!
/\ a messed up expression by the way

Hmm? Train crash in slow motion.

@apaul I had to google that, but no. There's other alternatives freely available here :)

@Tinkeringbell Lucky you ;)
@D.Hutchinson This one time at band camp...

8:19 PM
@D.Hutchinson Should report them to @TimPost then...

@Mithrandir hahaha that's too funny
they were nice -- confident group, it seemed

@Catija Awww. It's hard to bug people when they're crying... The tears scare the insects off.

@Mithrandir Don't let her fool you, she's tougher than she'd like us to believe.

@D.Hutchinson Please be cognizant... we're pretty protective of the staff here on SE. Please, consider avoiding talking about the private lives of staff in chat. It's not really appropriate. Just be happy that you had the opportunity and keep it to yourself.

8:35 PM
So... Anyway...

@apaul Anywho...

Seconded, motion to vote

Let the record show that the vote carries unopposed.

8:46 PM
I object!

I object to that objection, Your Honor.

I object to your objection to infinity
I win.

My mind is blown.

@Mithrandir Overruled. No, I object strenuously. Oh, is that how it works? I strenuously object?

I will tenuously suggest that I have no idea what's going on.

I will have order in the chatroom!

Respect my authority!!!

bangs gavel

One thing is for sure: there are way too many people with hammers and gavels here. Plus a couple nuclear warheads.
I move that we all hand our gavels to @Tinkeringbell.

8:54 PM
Keep em coming. I got a million of these.

@Mithrandir You know, I had all of em collected once. Then Catija made me share :/
And, because we're getting a storm tomorrow and education is never wrong:
I've packed the sandbags, and put the alcohol on a high shelve. So goodnight!

Good night

9:16 PM
hmm ... this could be an IPS question worth posting ...
regarding communicating with people in the service sector, I guess?
specifically ... what should I say to someone who cuts my hair for awhile ... say ... several months ... and I switch hairstylists / shops for a few months ... the former stylist always runs into me (we're in the same neighborhood) and then asks things that make me uncomfortable / feel awkward, e.g. "Oh, who do you get your haircuts from now?" and "oh, how much do you pay over there?"
stuff that I don't really want to answer ... for fear of disappointing her because I haven't gone back to her shop in awhile ...
what do you guys think?
I feel like it's more just that they are saying, "wtf, why haven't you come back to our shop instead?" rather than being genuinely interested in where else I am getting my stuffs ...

user15026
Oh, yeah, they don't actually care about where you are going other than how it relates to why you're not going to them

@JesseBarnett Looks like some clarity at last.
@Catija (and Jesse) You're right, this is more of a legal issue. I hadn't thought to check if the artist had a disclaimer on their site (which they do). In any case, I think there is a good answer to the question, so I won't delete it. — Fodder 2 mins ago

9:35 PM
@ash yeah ... hmm ... probably worth asking ... just to have a good response to keep in mind :)

1 hour later…
10:50 PM
@Tinkeringbell luckily I don’t have to worry about flooding, I live in the east so unless the ice on Antarctica melts, I’ll be fine

user15026
11:19 PM
Oh yay, I've almost rep-capped today from my two IPS answers :)

@Ash Congrats :D

user15026
It feels nice :)

... can't have that... IPS isn't about warm fuzzy feelings. ;)

user15026
laughs My apologies

@RoryAlsop You may or may not be happy to know that all of the fires have been put out. I can go back to my normal status...
@Ash Eh... it's a common mistake :P

11:48 PM
@Catija starts fires

estinguishes
