Q: How to ask for the answer to a question and be informed at the same time?

RachelI'm doing an assignment for my class. It's named XXX DBQ Graphic organizer and Introduction Paragraph. And I guess I'm doing pretty good, fast forward. I'm almost finished, I've check my sources on XXX and I made sure to include my evidence. So now I'm at the last question, I'm supposed to write ...

@CaldeiraG Hahaha the things people do :P

Ael
@CaldeiraG WTF?!? xD

A J
@CaldeiraG lol

Perhaps not as funny, but I found it amusing to notice: The news here was all about the curfew and stricter lockdown for days, then suddenly nothing on that anymore. Now, it's all articles on Trump, Biden, and promotional pieces on the artists that performed at the inauguration XD
So, it seems The Netherlands no longer has any problems and we can fully focus our attention on America now XD

8:56 AM
Seems like a good country to live in then. ;)

@Tinkeringbell XD
@Ael eheh

@AJ Yeah or not, depending on how you look at it... If the media is only feeding people information about other countries and no news about your own country, that's probably not so good.

@Tinkeringbell pretty much the same here, trump biden news lol

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Ah yeah, same in France x) I still managed to find an article saying that ski station won't be reopening for the holidays and probably won't be reopening before the end of February (so, basically, they probably won't be reopening at all this year). They are calling it a "white year" for the ski station. Which is a bit "funny" because in the context of ski you would think that "white" is good, but no. It means that they won't get any money this year and the season is lost

yesterday was the worst day for portugal: 14k new cases, 200+ deaths

8:59 AM
@Ael Oof, yeah. There's a lot of money lost in leisure business this year. But they'll need people to survive if they want to reopen next year :P
@CaldeiraG Things had been going down here for weeks, but yesterday the numbers went slightly up again (compared with a 7 day average).

@Tinkeringbell :(

Ael
@CaldeiraG Honestly, the number of times people here said "yesterday was the worst day for my country" is really depressing. Because it means that we keep beating our "worst"

@Ael basically
i think i hadn't said before but i started quarantining today again
mom's quick test came out positive yesterday

@AJ lol XD

Ael
9:03 AM
@Tinkeringbell Nah, people who go skiing are usually part of the richer population and poor people are the ones who die the most from covid (because more contamination because of works that can't be done remotely). So they don't need to worry too much about "will our clients survive?" (this is dark humour. Please don't take this at face value)

@Ael Honestly, you may be right though.
Though I've seen rich people ignore the rules more because the fines don't matter to them :P

A J
@Tinkeringbell Well, I even read articles about the lowest crime rate and empty prisons in newspapers here.
Saw this one in my YouTube feed a few days ago.

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Well it's true that poor people die more of covid. It's just the way I said it seemed "heartless" to me, thus the warning.

9:18 AM
@AJ The news has reported there have been less burglaries here too, because people are home more. But the news also reported that there has been a flood in phishing, scams, and other cybercrime. So I don't know if rates have actually gone down...

A J
@Tinkeringbell That news came before Covid.

@Ael I know that's true for e.g. the US, I haven't specifically heard anything tied to income here. I remember only 1 report here about how infection rates in communities with a migratory background here are higher, and those people may also have less well-paying jobs. But the infections in that case have been tied to cultural practice (large families, large gatherings, not knowing enough Dutch to fully understand the COVID measures), not necessarily their income.

Ael
@Tinkeringbell I know that in France it's linked to income. Poor = not being able to work from home, not being able to afford sick days leave (so you keep working unless you are too sick), having to take public transportation, smaller flats so not able to properly isolate if someone in the family has covid.

9:41 AM
@Ael Luckily sick leave is arranged well here, and everyone can take that and keep their full pay :) There has been a bit of grumbling here about quarantining, which right now isn't always refunded. They're working on that though, and it's not just poor people that have to deal with that... my dad is in a similar situation for example.

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Here, if you take a sick leave, the first few (3 or 2, I don't remember) days of it aren't paid...

That sucks.

Ael
Yeah, it's really crappy IMO
And also stupid IMO since now people hesitate to take a sick leave (which they were already doing anyway) and everyone in your workplace endup sick with the same virus
@Tinkeringbell Ok, yeah, we were definitively linked somewhere. It's not possible otherwise
You could have had just one worker take a full week of sick leave. But now you have 10 workers each taking 3 days of instead...

Yeah, that sucks :( I do try to keep to myself but over here it also used to be very normal to 'just go to work' if you weren't really feeling ill but you were sick (like having a cold). I do hope that all this changes that a little, because often a coworker would have a very mild cold and then I'd be sniffling and feeling brainfoggy for weeks :/
Not necessarily with people calling in sick, but perhaps 'calling in sick enough to only work from home for a while'.

Ael
Yeah, definitively agree with you (though that would only work for people who can work from home. But it will still be an improvement)

A J
9:57 AM
Here we don't get unlimited sick leaves. Just around 30 every year.

It's not necessarily 'unlimited' here too. I could look up how the system works but it's basically 'you can just call in sick, and keep getting paid. If you're sick for a longer time, you're going to have to see a doctor and work with them on rehabilitating.' I think it takes 2 years here before an employer can disband a contract with an ill employee and put the employee on benefits.

Q: How can I ask my landlord for compensation over his mistake?

eveI am renting a room in a shared apartment with three other people, one of which is the landlord. Recently, one person moved out and today I realized that the landlord has thrown away all of the food I had in the freezer. I guess this was done because he thought it was the other person's and that ...

That last part is up for discussion a lot lately, as a lot of people complain they were the 'best' person for the job, they just weren't hired because they were also a 'risk' for long-term sick leave. So there's a whole debate about what makes someone 'best' for a job and who is supposed to carry what 'risk'.

10:20 AM
@ExtrovertedMainMan Weird voting there.

Ael
10:31 AM
@Tinkeringbell What do you mean? This sounds like a good first question for a new user

@Ael Just that the site has seen almost no voting for a long while, not even on new user questions, and all of a sudden this one pops up in chat with two already. That's weird and makes my spidey-senses tingle. Especially as it's not that good of a question, it's borderline 'what do I say'.

Ael
@Tinkeringbell Well, it was written 45 minutes ago, so people had time to vote. Also, this one attracts "emotional voting". ie: OP was wronged, OP should be given an upvote to make them feel better (I must admit, I did upvote this question ^^)

@Ael Ah yes, the 'emotional vote'. The one that's clearly mentioned in the guidance and hovertext on upvote buttons XD

Ael
Ah well, we are just poor weak humans here letting our emotions guide us ^^

Sure :P And my emotions say it's not helpful to ignore the real reasons you should use an upvote button, so I'm letting that guide me :P

Q: Dealing with Transphobia in a Gym Locker Room

ChocolateEclairIn summary I am a 35 year old transwoman, and I've been dealing with transphobic comments since I've joined a new gym. So the story goes, I've been struggling with my gender identity and 3 months ago I decided finally accept who I was and transition, this is about the same time I moved to a small...

nos.nl/artikel/… O.o Worth a read if translate works well enough: Apparently if the physical location of a Dutch IP Address is unknown, it gives coordinates that are 'the center of The Netherlands' (rounded). At this location lives a family that has seen some pretty bizarre things due to that!

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, they have the same thing in the USA. And sometimes, this said family would receive a SWAT team because of that (which really isn't funny for them) :/
If you want to waist some time :p window-swap.com

1:37 PM
I really really need to finish something but yeah, there'll be plenty of time to waste tonight :D I'll take a look then.

Ael
@Tinkeringbell It's the view from other people's windows (but not in real-time). I find it real hypnotic and also peaceful. It's probably a nice site to go to when you lack inspiration or you don't want to do anything

Hahaha that sounds nice :D To be fair my window view today is okay, there's a lot of wind so there's quite a bit of movement in the trees behind the house here :D
And neat little water ripples in the water on the shed. I missed the birds bathing today though, usually in the morning there's a whole bunch of em :D

Ael
That sounds nice. Though I often find my window to be quite boring since I am so used to it

Yeah that's true :D
I'm almost getting a different window though! XD

Ael
Also, those are not real-time windows and most of them were filmed in the summer. So it's quite nice to see so many green

Q: How to get a young Egyptian woman to talk about herself

ThomasAbout half a year ago a young Egyptian woman contacted me via Facebook, because she was looking for a native German speaker who also has some decent English skills. Of course at first I suspected some love scam or so, but I'm certain that this is not the case. She studies English and German and s...

Ahah, you are being too chatty Tink :p

Well you try to whip a question on showering in a female changing room with male genitalia into shape without someone resorting to calling you -phobic or -ist. It takes a lot of words and padding and insincere niceties to come even close....
So yeah... it needs it.

Q: What would you do if you were in my socioeconomic situation?

phoenixWould like to discuss my family & financial condition here so that you guys can share your thoughts. TLDR :) In 2016 I have purchased a small piece of land (31*40 ----> 138 square yards - corner plot) in a gated community in Medchal - Hyderabad for 11,00,000 INR. Now its value has more than doubl...

@ExtrovertedMainMan I'm dumb... I recommended a site to check out and ask, but they already have asked there and it's got comments saying it's no good there either XD Oh well.

Curfew will start here next Saturday, from 9PM to 4:30AM... We'll see how much 'visits' that blocks.
(Most people here start visiting each other around 8PM for evening coffee, sometimes earlier. So that leaves plenty of time for people to still have a quick coffee with someone before going home for curfew).

my govt finally decided to close up schools
for 2 weeks
the flip side is that there is no remote classes
it's basically an unexpected vacation

Oh wow. Schools have been closed here since before Christmas, as those little snotballs are walking superspreaders!
They do remote classes though, giving them months off would also be too good for kids :P

:P
find it weird that there is no remote classes
what's the point
now you're making students do those hours later

Or not at all :P There has been arguing here to just let students go at their own pace, and not look too much at whether they're 'behind schedule' or not, as with these circumstances every schoolkid/student will be.

true
depends
i guess it's good not to keep a strict schedule but students get less into it after 14 days and may take more time to understand new concepts

9:12 PM
True. But that's a bit of the point: Every student will have that and start lagging ;)

true :)
