5 hours later…
5:31 AM
GaMen :)

5:46 AM
oh hai @dhein

6:25 AM
Well, I finished the coding problem I was working on for a job interview, so I guess it's off to bed with me!

Sleep tight pal :)

@Rainbacon Sleep well!
Good morning to the rest of us ;)

0/

How are you today?

Tired, busy, and fine :) Wbu?

6:35 AM
@dhein Just woke up... Still missing my warm blanket ;)
Not that busy, I'm going to start a new story today though :)

What a bummer '^.^
@Tinkeringbell Tell me more :)
I like storys :P

@dhein Just a programming story :P We discovered I couldn't do the one I was working on... So now I get to finally give up and take up a new task. It's just finetuning some checks and code, but I like doing that so :)

You happy with leaving the other one unfinished and going on? Or little annoyed about not finishing it? ^^

@dhein Happy that I don't have to spend days trying and fixing it anyways, a bit annoyed that I wasted quite a bit of time on it.

Ah so in the end overall a very positive outcome from now on :) Glad to hear :)

6:49 AM
Yeah, I'm happy :)

Hiya

Morning!

Are you happier now that you're not working with the famous coworker anymore?
(Famous for their annoyance)

*infamous :P

@Mithrandir oh right that may be better :p

6:56 AM
@avazula Yes, a lot.

@Tinkeringbell I'm glad then.

Last week was a bit awkward though: I was waiting for a bus home and he offered a ride... "oh, no, that's not necessary and not on your route" didn't really work, so I ended up accepting... Felt kinda bad afterwards though :P

@avazula Hola :)

@dhein Hey there :D
@Tinkeringbell now I really don't understand that person o_o

@avazula He's a good guy, just a very annoying dev to work with? :)

6:59 AM
@Tinkeringbell Hahahaha Sounds like you were fed your own medicine '^.^

@dhein Ssssh :P

:P

haha

But now that y'all are here... What do you think of the latest meta post? Should IPS meta be used for those kind of posts?

JAD
linkylink?

7:05 AM
+1
Although I think I know whta you're talking about

JAD
I'm guessing
-1
Q: April is autism awareness month

The WraithApril is autism awareness month. As I've seen no official posts on it since I've been here, I've decided to take the initiative. Autism presents difficulties both from the person with the condition, and the people around them. Even though people are becoming more aware of autism, it is still oft...

He wrote an equivalent on TWP which was kinda well received
Like, 17 UVs right now

JAD
curious that these things take up entire months
there's so much to be aware of, there are not enough months in a year

@JAD True. So y'all need to think about whether or not you want to have posts like this on IPS Meta every time something pops up :)

JAD
7:10 AM
> Should IPS meta be used for those kind of posts?
IDK, did you discuss that on meta yet?
:P
@Tinkeringbell Well, it is at least marginally related to IPS

@JAD I can make a meta post, but right now I'm more interested in more opinions...

JAD
If it were, say, pizza awareness month, that'd be off-topic for sure
@Tinkeringbell I was kidding :P
I don't think there's much harm in it
But I guess there's the danger of soapboxing

@JAD Hmmm. And have you thought about what our meta would look like if every person posted a similar list of do's and don'ts every time a new day pops up?
You just did, it seems :P

JAD
:)
@Tinkeringbell well, next year you can just close as duplicate :P

haha

JAD
7:14 AM
I wonder whether instead it might belong on main

@JAD Dingdingding get out of my head :P

JAD
like, can it be shaped in such a way to yield a regular Q&A?

They said the same on TWP meta

And if it were posted on main, would we accept it as well-written?

JAD
as is? no
unclear what you're asking

7:15 AM
So should it be on meta then?

@Tinkeringbell I don't see any harm for this to be on meta, although I may not be the one to ask on that topic :/

JAD
Well, meta is also used for announcements, which inherently ask no question
so I don't think the same standards apply

@JAD But is this an announcement? It's not saying 'It's autism awareness month, here's an event'

JAD
the title definitely announces something
the autism awareness month is the event in itself
announcement: you are now aware
:P

@JAD i.e. their tiredness of seeing questions involving autism being answered with content that does not consider the autistic specificities
(I'm not inventing it, he said it in the water cooler)

7:18 AM
@avazula Perhaps not for this... but I'm trying to figure out if y'all want 'this' for every other thing as well. Otherwise, as a community you might have to draw a line now and not later.

JAD
@avazula I'm not sure if I read that here
@Tinkeringbell yeah, what if next month is dudebro awareness month? :P

@Tinkeringbell I know, that's why I said I'm not sure I could answer

JAD
I wonder though, I think a similar question on A51-neurodiversity was shot down because of being a list type question
so I'm not sure if this could be molded to fit main

@avazula Which is okay :) I understand autism is close to a lot of people in here...
@JAD Which still leaves the question of whether or not to accept stuff on meta if we can't mold it for main. :)

JAD
poof
suddenly half the room left :O

7:20 AM
0.o what happened there!

JAD
it looked pretty

Probably some cache being cleared XD

JAD
do it again!

Yeah, it did. I didn't do it!

@Tinkeringbell It's not that I want to advocate it everywhere (which is why I truly don't know whether it's a good fit for our meta), it's just that as someone who's autistic it's unclear for me haha

7:21 AM
@avazula Think about it for a while if you have the time (don't let it distract you while working XD).
Right now I'm asking because I'm seeing downvote and a starred message saying it might have been getting them as it wasn't a good fit for meta due to not being about the workings of the site itself... If that's the case though, like I pointed out yesterday the community might work on closing the question as off-topic to better send that signal then with stars in chat and downvotes :)

@Tinkeringbell I'll try :) but I can't say I'll go to the side of "it doesn't belong here". Meta has a big "discussion" component, so I don't see any harm on a post discussing the specificities that one needs to take into account before answering posts from an autistic person/involving autism. That discussion being badly received doesn't necessarily mean to me that it should be closed, it's more the opposite: it shows we thought about it and discussed it at that point.
Now, I understand the additional workload it involves, though: it opens the door to similar posts on whatever specificities IPS people may have. So if that workload of drawing the line is too important, I'd understand that post to be closed.

@avazula Then what do you think about interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/q/2870/1599? That's a discussion on what one needs to take into account when interacting with posts from autistic people or posts involving autism as well. Do you think the two are equal?

@Tinkeringbell Difficult to judge. I like the idea, but I don't like on other sites that moderation is like "Well, as long it is well received, we shouldn't intervene"... So I am a bit dichotomy about it....
@JAD I was a bit confused, too. Usually its the autism awareness day on 02.04 And I thought it was just an initiative company internally overhere that the AutismatWork team made it a full month. But giving it a full month I agree feels somewhat representing it wrong to me aswell.

@Tinkeringbell they cover the same purpose indeed

@avazula But they're written in different ways, yes?

7:35 AM
@Tinkeringbell True ... but they cover the same topic. however, I feel that the latter shouldn't be closed as duplicate before the two posts be merged, they both bring important informatiom to me

@JAD Gotcha!!! I am in with that xP But also have to add like ava said.... Wrong person to be asked here. So.... still dichotomy '^.^.... I see I just don't like to settle with a point here. (What probably means in itself I agree that it shouldn't be on meta...)
darn I just confused my self... I am backing off from that. xD

@avazula We can't really merge before things are closed as duplicates, and even then: Merging only transfers answers from one to the other. What I was trying to point out is that while they both cover the same topics to an extent (autism awareness month, autism)... I'd like people to think about interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/q/3636/1599 is really about site workings... Can we see people staring? Can we touch people? :P
Is it about IPS as a site or just about interacting with people with autism?

@Tinkeringbell what I meant is that we could use bits of the last part of the post "What can I do to help someone with autism overcome some of the difficulties?", rename it into "what should I take into account when answering a post from an author with autism?", post it as an answer of the first post and then close as dupe.

@avazula Perhaps, but I'm guessing I shouldn't have linked that because now we're kinda going to miss the point ;)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell It reads as pretty general

7:42 AM
@Tinkeringbell Oh, I'm sorry I made you feel that way :(

I was trying to give an example of a post involving autism awareness that was clearly also about the workings of the Interpersonal Skills Site, to see if people saw contrast between a post discussing/asking about site moderation and the latest meta post. ;)
I didn't really want the discussion to turn into one on duplicates ;)

@Tinkeringbell I got confused then, because the latest has 2 close casts

@Tinkeringbell I will do that. But thats a tough one to be fair :P

@avazula That's true. But they are for off-topic: Not about the workings of the site.
Not for dupe ;)
20 mins ago, by Tinkeringbell
Right now I'm asking because I'm seeing downvote and a starred message saying it might have been getting them as it wasn't a good fit for meta due to not being about the workings of the site itself... If that's the case though, like I pointed out yesterday the community might work on closing the question as off-topic to better send that signal then with stars in chat and downvotes :)

@Tinkeringbell well I kinda disagree with the fact that they wouldn't be about the working of the site, as it's asking people to consider certain things when they use the site (with autistic people only, I agree).

7:45 AM
So I picked the other one to see if people perceived a difference between the two, but apparently not ;)

not really, tbh

JAD
wait, what is it now?
today's meta post?

To summarize: I don't see the harm in that post, but I don't feel it brings more to the previous one. To me it should be closed as dupe, not as off topic. But that may be my reading, as I said I'm biased.

@avazula Can you point me towards the sentence in the latest meta post that says this is about interacting on IPS?

JAD
because I don't read that as being directed to the site at all, but rather some general pointers on how people with autism function

7:47 AM
@Tinkeringbell sure

JAD
> - Point out inappropriate behavior directly, and in private. A diagnosis is not an excuse for bad behavior, and while many people with autism may not realize what they are doing, the behavior still needs to be addressed. Be direct, specific, and firm. Again, don't try to be nice, it will just confuse the person.
in private is not really a thing on IPS
it reads more like a guide on interacting on the workplace (no capital) than on IPS

@Tink "What can I do to help someone with autism overcome some of the difficulties?" contains guidelines for interacting with autistic people on IPS. I agree, 75% of it could be removed because it's not about the IPS site. But it has some interesting advice that could help people using the site.

could anyone ping me if this discussion is more then a 27'' screen in the past? I feel like following this discussion starts to trigger me, since I am actually agreeing with both contradicting sites.... and getting overwhelmed is not a good thing to start the day with. >.< So I'd better leave till its finished. Good luck with finding an agreement :)

JAD
they are applicable, yes

@JAD well it's almost a copied-pasted of TWP meta post version
@dhein I feel you, I feel the same. I'll ping you pal :) enjoy!

JAD
7:50 AM
ok, so then what does it do on IPS? Not that I wasn't referring to interacting on TWP, but to interacting at work. in real life

@Tink don't get me wrong, I don't think it should stay. I just feel some of the latest post contents may be used to post an answer on the old one.

JAD
because quite a lot of those bulletpoints are not feasible or detectible through the interwebz in the SE format
from a Q&A, I can't detect whether someone is having a breakdown

@JAD I don't know, I'm not in their head. I just know they had trouble with the way autism may have been seen on IPS especially, so surely that's why they decided to cross-post.

JAD
if they have a problem with it, this is an awfully vague way of communicating that

@JAD No you don't. But if a post is tagged "autism", it sounds like common decency to take it into account when answering and try to be direct, clear, and not making the OP's author feel like you're denying and dismissing their specificities

JAD
7:52 AM
I don't think it's much more than a PSA
@avazula that's not what I said though

I don't know what to tell you more, I said I agree
@Tink did that whole conversation help you make your mind?

@avazula I wanted to know what y'all were thinking ;) Now I'm going to do my own thinking for a while, and I'll probably put up a post on meta later discussing what we do and do not want on meta :)
But yeah, this helped a lot with just gathering thoughts, so thank you all :D

JAD
We really really need a meta meta

@JAD :) by the way, I didn't want to be rude in any way so I hope it didn't come across like this. I just felt that we were saying the same thing and feeling like you didn't understand what I said triggered me. If I hurt you, I'm sorry.

I'm not a regular here, but I can share some experience from a similar issue on another site: a particular class of question which some said should be closed according to formal "what's on-topic for meta" rules.
None of the questions listed has ever been closed; if there's a history of problematic "memorial" posts here, you should list some examples and describe the problems they caused. Generally-speaking, the meta site exists for discussion of anything directly relevant to the community on SF&F. — Shog9 ♦ Dec 29 '16 at 18:28
This is the generic "What is meta" description, @Matt. Purpose #1 covers pretty much anything where y'all are talking to each other. What that means in practice is mostly up to you: if there are things you don't want to talk about, then they're off-topic. My point was simply that this was rather less controversial before the question was asked than it has become afterwards - hence encouragement to cite an actual problem rather than hand-waving at non-existent rules. — Shog9 ♦ Dec 30 '16 at 2:47

7:59 AM
thanks for the input @Randal'Thor!

Essentially, there are no formal requirements for "what's on-topic for meta". Anything that's relevant to the community is probably OK, unless it's actually causing problems somehow.

@Randal'Thor Yes, that's why I was asking the community to think about whether or not they see this as problematic, as a precedent for other problematic posts etc. None of the questions listed has ever been closed > Perhaps if you don't want a precedent you should close. That's what I was gathering opinions about :)

Why would you "not want a precedent" though? If it's problematic, you can close it on its own merits. If that class of questions later becomes problematic, you can decide to close them all.

@Randal'Thor A lot of times, the reverse happens though. People say 'X is open, so Y should not be closed either'.

This reminds me of the discussions where someone says "questions asking X about Y should be off-topic, because you could ask a million of them about every possible Y" until I point out the the same argument goes for almost any type of on-topic question and mass-producibility doesn't imply off-topicness.

8:04 AM
Eh, that's a different problem

JAD
@Tinkeringbell on the other hand, spending time preempting problems and hashing out policy for fear of something that might not come could also be a waste of time

If someone does ask a million of them, then it's a problem. The possibility that someone might do something problematic hypothetically with a particular type of question ... eh.

@JAD True, but gathering thoughts isn't a sin ;)

JAD
:shrugs:

I was advised to try and see what the community thought of that post, and I did, and I got thoughts. So all good :)

JAD
8:05 AM
+1 to what Rand said btw
@Randal'Thor I guess the only problem here is how you define problematic
since the topic can become subjective and emotional very quickly
If you leave if to mod's discretion you run the risk of looking biased, by drawing the line only after a certain topic
I'm not sure how representative chat is of the community nowadays, but there used to be a lot of users active on the site that didn't frequent chat

> What is "meta"? How does it work?
Meta Science Fiction & Fantasy Stack Exchange is the part of the site where users discuss the workings and policies of Science Fiction & Fantasy Stack Exchange rather than discussing science fiction or fantasy itself.
I'm still not sure how that rhymes with what Shog said there..

@JAD Yep, that's the subjective part that you all need to decide on.

It's pretty specific in saying 'should be about the site'

@JAD Doesn't the same thing go for a lot of IPS topics?

JAD
@Randal'Thor hell yes

8:09 AM
@JAD Yeah, hence why I'm only gathering thoughts here a bit ;)

JAD
but I meant to compare that to say meta problems on SFF or similar sites
sure, there might be the occasional drama, but I don't think it's as personal as quickly as on IPS
that's a lot of as-es

@JAD That word looks bowdlerised :-P

JAD
@Randal'Thor I was mostly trying to avoid referencing buttoxes
which I guess failed now

@JAD True. But is it used as a reason to close stuff here? Or do you just have to accept that lots of on-topic stuff has the potential to get subjective and emotional, and try to moderate sensibly to avoid it going in that direction?

JAD
the latter

8:48 AM
In other news... My iPhone is working again :)
So I now have a happy manager
Hopefully my meeting with him tomorrow will be okay

@dhein you can come back :)
@Tinkeringbell yay!
Fingers crossed

I think I'll do fine ;)

(dhein, don't read that) @Tinkeringbell I don't want to revive the discussion. I just wanted to say, that I found this post very disturbing yesterday because there was no question and it wasn't related to IPS (unlike the other metà post you linked). So, time, this post probably has nothing do in here. At least, not in this form.
FYI, I just voted to close (I couldn't make up my mind yesterday, but I was able to do so this morning)

9:14 AM
Quick, now talk about different stuff then so dhein can come back :P

@Tinkeringbell haha

May I ask how that situation with your co-worker ended @avazula? :)

@Tinkeringbell I couldn't send him an answer because he was offline (Skype interactions). He sent me a message this morning saying "Hi, thank you again for explaining me this stuff yesterday, I really appreciate". I answered "you're welcome", to which he answered "it's important to tell nice people when you meet one"
and that's all :) I'm glad

That's good :D

Change of topic for @dhein:

9:17 AM
Awww!

Aaaaw

Yep, I just "googled" (using Lilo) "cute" and I found this very cute picture :D

some baby animals aren't so cute :P
Did I show y'all the baby manatee that was born in the zoo my brother works at?

@Tinkeringbell Well, this one isn't that bad. I know some baby animals can look very ugly
And yes you did for the manatee ^^

9:19 AM
@Ælis Well, here it is again as I think it's just too cute :)

AAAAW

@dhein you really have to see this one! ^^

@Tinkeringbell We did not hat that very picture before :D But I find it hard to realize that this is a baby :o

(he's busy working now, and we're all disturbing him XD)
@Ælis It is, though without an adult for scale it looks pretty much like a grown up seal or something :P

I don't know what animal is this suppose to be, but here goes an ugly baby:

9:23 AM
Come on... beauty is subjective :p
isn't this a bat?

@avazula I don't think so, the "hands" of a bat are there "wings" and this baby clearly as hands that aren't wings
And, if people want cuteness after seeing this... hum... baby creature, just go overthere and let your heart melt: search.lilo.org/…

I'm stunned by your ability of searching risky words on the web and never stumble upon p*rn

I'm guessing that's because they use Lilo, not Google? What's the difference between the two @Ælis ?

@Tinkeringbell one is eco-friendly, and the other one is Google :p

@Ælis Apparently it's a Madagascar Aye-aye.

9:29 AM
eco-friendly?

@Tinkeringbell it generates revenues from ads that are given to associations for environment preservation or taking care of people
you choose

JAD
@Tinkeringbell it's a green search engine

@JAD I was wondering what exactly was eco-friendly ;)

@avazula "Baby animals" is a risky word? Oo And yes, I believe that Lilo is filtering "adult content" (I have noticed that, but it's not advertise anywhere)

Exactly as @Walfrat says: your (and my) manager saying "thanks" is them saying "ok this meeting is over, thanks for coming, bye". I usually answer "Merci à toi(/vous)" (which is kind of "thank you" but with emphasis on the you ) and go back to work :) — Kerkyra 1 min ago

JAD
9:30 AM
eh, I prefer no ads to begin with

Matched regex(es) ["experimental(@avazula)"]

@Ælis not so much that one, but "cute animals" ... erh ...

@avazula You get to choose? That's quite awesome :)

yup :)

@avazula Now I'm amazed Oo
@JAD It doesn't have more ads than google. Also, it as parteners and, everytime I buy a train tickets with the SNCF, I gain some "Lilo point" that I can donate to association (the Lilo point are then turn into real money)

JAD
9:34 AM
@Ælis I don't want Google's ads either

@Tinkeringbell Here is the page where you can choose the association (it's in French, but there is picture): lilo.org/fr/category/les-projets
@JAD That is why I use an add block :p

@Ælis Woah, that's a pretty big selection! :)

I'm building such a disgusting website ... ugh

JAD
@Ælis exactly
wow
they don't know how venn-diagrams work

@Tinkeringbell There was less at the beginning and it's very nice to see that it's growing ^^

9:39 AM
I personally use Ecosia, it's basically the same thing except you're planting trees

I feel bad now for 'just' using Google XD

@JAD Haha, true. I guess you should boycott this association for that :p (badum-tsu)
@Tinkeringbell Haha, go convert and use something else! (like DuckDuckGo who works in multiple language)

@Ælis I wonder if 'Ilse' is still alive.

@Tinkeringbell Never hear of 'Ilse' (according to my search engine, it's just a woman name ^^) but maybe it's just a Netherland things?

@Ælis Yeah, it is a really, really Dutch 90s search engine ;)
My first ventures on the internet were through startpagina.nl (startpage.nl in English) and its search engine, Ilse

9:50 AM
@Tinkeringbell I think, in France, we had 'Lycos'. But I never used it as I wasn't using internet at the time

JAD
@Tinkeringbell en Dolfijn email :O

@JAD I missed that! Would've done great with my last name, probably! XD

JAD
:P
apparently it died in 2004

@JAD Yeah :P
@JAD I was 13 at that time... just settling in to internet and msn ;)
Google and hotmail! Yay!

JAD
msn managed to live for quite a long time

10:00 AM
Yeah, I only stopped using it when I was around 20...

JAD
I think I used it till around 2012?
not continuously, but still

Though I must admit in the years leading up to that, most of my conversations had already moved to Facebook.
@JAD About the same here..
On another note, I was gathering some stuff to self answer my April Fools question, only to find it on page three of google search results XD

10:13 AM
Am I the only one feeling like we really have a few questions being ask this week?

Nah, you're not the only one... question activity is down a bit lately

:/

@Ælis I'm reading a book, perhaps it opens up possibilities for asking a new question soon ;)

Yeah, questions \o/

The point with those is often that I'd like to self-answer them though, as the answers are also in the book XD

10:27 AM
Thanks for pinging me and letting me have a flood of animal pictures when being back x)

But I must say, I'm usulay more interested in every day life question compare to the etiquette/academic-research one. Also, I like being able to improve tagging for those low-rep user's question :p
@dhein Haha, anytime you want :p

11:46 AM
Hey

JAD
ola

Hello!

12:29 PM
Hallo !

12:41 PM
How's everyone been lately?

Well peeps, not all at once! :P I've been great since being on the other project, but you kinda knew that already :P
How have you been? I don't think I've asked recently ;)

JAD
I've got a deadline for a big project tomorrow

Ah, are you on track?

JAD
been working on it for the better part of last year
it'll have to do
like, we learnt of the deadline a few weeks ago
so it's a bit of cutting what we can still do, and what not

I'm transitioning a legacy system of a small company in our group to our new homebrew ERP system
the old system was also homebrew and written by 2 interns over 2 years
There is a table with 290 columns
With all time favorites of mine such as "DT_Data_7a" through "XZ_Data19b"

JAD
12:48 PM
oh, don't get me started about our crm database

I'm pretty sure the old implementation is hitting the physical limits of what access 2000 is capable of processing

I've been tired a lot because I've been doing late nights either working on code questions for job interviews or doing my actual job to make up for hours that I missed earlier in the day taking job interviews
@Magisch Oh, that sounds like so much fun </sarcasm>

JAD
@Magisch hmm, I'm looking at a table with 144 columns
and 1264699999 rows

is that hyperbole?
Or 1 billion 264 million rows?
