GaMen :)

Indeed.

1 hour later…
5:41 AM
Hahaha, so I asked a few weeks ago on meta, why I still haven't received my giftcard for helping test the devloper survey. So they told me I should have received it already 1~2 months ago. After checking it, they figured that "I somehow got missed out by the rollout of the gift cards"
As a thanks I now got a 10$ gift card instead. Inform of a oneway use Visa debit card. I like that x)

JAD
6:33 AM
hmm. I haven't used mine yet. But it's for german amazon :S
@dhein I never use amazon, so if you want mine too... :)

Hello everyone!

A J
Afternoon!
@dhein I got it too, but it's not working in my country.

7:02 AM
@avazula Heya :)
@JAD Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it. But I don't use amazon either. That's why I am so happy about having got a visa card isntead of an amazon ballance. :)

But amazon...XD I only use the .com one, the .nl version only has ebooks.

A J
I use Amazon.

@AJ Yeh, as said. They somehow accidently left me out. I assume that visa card should work in my country, since it seems to be technically a visa card x)

7:31 AM
morning

7:59 AM
@Magisch o/

8:49 AM
Hello people, how are you? I, personally, have feelings all over the place. Jumping from one emotion to the other without much reason (this minute I feel very good for almost nothing). This afternoon I have a meeting where we will discuss what happened yesterday (with, between other things, me crashing the demo by pushing stuff when I shouldn't have). So, I'm kind of worry that my "all over the place feelings" will "beautifully crash" at this point ^^

@Ælis :( ♥♥♥♥

@Ælis Try not to worry too much about your meeting. Do you already know e.g. what you need to prevent this from happening again?

@avazula <3 <3 <3
@Tinkeringbell Yep, I know what steps are needed (but they mostly need to be taken by someone else, like a better warning that no one should push on the develop branch). The only thing that really worries me is that my not-nice-coworker might try to fully blame me and push me done for my mistake :/ (when I know that some of the other people involve don't blame me that much for it)

@Ælis Hmm. That's going to be hard, it's going to be his word against yours... What was his part in the whole fiasco?

@Tinkeringbell I'm not sure. Maybe the decision to have the branch develop directly deploying stuff in qual (instead of having it done by the branch "qual") because "it was quicker"
(plus the fact that is warning wasn't very clear, at least for me)

9:13 AM
@Ælis Well, in that case... I would avoid arguments I guess. If he brings up that he warned you, just say you must've misunderstood and that you're sorry.

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, but when they ask for solutions to avoid the problem in the future, I will have to point out that I need clearer, more visible warnings and that maybe making the "develop" branch directly deploying things wasn't such a great idea (even if it probably wouldn't have been a problem if the warning had been clearer and more visible). I'm afraid he won't take it well and tell me (and everyone in the room) I was stupid and all :/

@Ælis :(

JAD
On one side, running demos on an unstable branch is probably a bad idea
also, it's odd. it's perfectly possible to prevent committing to a branch altogether. So no need for warnings or somesuch

@JAD Yep, but it was for "quick bug finding" before the demo...
@JAD Didn't know that. Thanks for the information :)

JAD
why does bug finding include pushing commits and breaking things though?
idk, not pushing/committing to develop/master directly is pretty established as far as I know. Not sure if blaming that on the lack of warning looks all that good.

9:28 AM
Because it was the PO who validated things and were finding the bugs. So it needed to be deployed in qual and they thought that, instead of merging in "develop" then "qual" to have it deploy, it was quicker to just merge in "develop" and deployed it (without merging in qual first)

@JAD this. Why on Earth would you use a develop branch to deploy stuff? That's why you don't directly commit on master!

@JAD To be clear, I started to push on my local branch and then I merged in develop (on my own, because there is no one to review my stuff, but I guess I should change that too)

I'm a bit confused as to your company's branch division

@Magisch local branch -> develop -> qual -> master (which isn't use yet because the product isn't ready for production)

JAD
@Ælis is qual a shorthand for something?
oh right

9:34 AM
@JAD qualification

JAD
at first it sounded like it was local -> qual -> develop
which... confused me

Sorry that I wasn't clear ^^'

JAD
hmm, here we can basically make a deploy from any branch. So if you want to test a local branch, just deploy it to <localbranchname>.projects.independer.nl

@JAD That's nice. We want to have that at some point, but we didn't have the people to put that in place before. No we have one person and a lot of stuff to have them do :p

Sorry to jump in but this might or not be pertinent or impertinent:

9:44 AM
@humn Haha, I already knew this picture, but it's still is so true x)

! many variations by now, including that one.
Successful communication between willing and able parties is not a given.

That's very true

@Ælis, you are a positive force, beyond self-consciousness.
(Looking for the Charlie Brown quote.)
(Not finding it, to paraphrase:)
Charlie Brown: Why are we here?
Lucy van Pelt: To make others happy.
Charlie Brown: Why are others here?
(still looking for the original)
Got it, but backward:

@humn That's really cute, even if it's a little sad

True.

9:58 AM
Also, it strongly resonate with me

!
I believe everyone has a purpose and a point, even we together don't recognisze it at the moment.
Actually, more than one purpose and point.

I believe the opposite, that life have no sense at all. But since I'm here, then I should try to make the word a better place

That is your purpose!
Thank you for taking the high road.
Agreed, life makes no sense.
It wasn't our choice to be here.
Someone i knew, who chose not to be here anymore said, "we do fewer and fewer things for the first time and more and more things for the last time."
And yes, @Ælis, i sneak out at dark with some lettuce (money to disperse) and sit down next to friends, by now, who are as penniless as i've been and as homeless as i will be soon.
Just to make the world a better place.
(By the way, it's important to sit down and not hover.)
. . .
I'm gobsmacked among high-tech friends who count on me to unravel their knots while i feel at ease on the pavement with friends who beg for batteries for a watch just to know what day it is (among other desires).
. . .
(Silence in response? Well understood. If you met me in person you wouldn't. But typing on a keyboard is an anonymous-enough medium since the 1970s. Even earlier for others.)
. . .
To narrow the topic, probably already covered, isn't it easier to interact one-on-one than many-on-many?
Many-on-many takes me to spectator mode.
Except musically, as in community orchestra, when many-on-many is like sunshine beaming wide.
. . .
Enough from this type?
. . .

10:34 AM
You're monologuing again, and not making much sense. Didn't you have a special room for that?

@humn Sorry for not responding, I had my meeting ^^

@Ælis How did it go?

@Tinkeringbell , yes, and you're welcome to it. chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/39978/the-troll

@humn Perhaps later, I'm also trying to focus on work right now, however slow it goes :)

@Ælis , more power to you!

10:38 AM
@Tinkeringbell It went well, but my teeth are now shivering because of the tiredness (I try not to let them because it would look weird to my coworker)
@humn Thank you :)

@Tinkeringbell , understood, and understood, as well as possible. Again, i'll shy away for another month or few but this site seems taylor made for someone like me.
I help others burgeon careers just to overshadow me.
On purpose.

Please don't start another monologue.
@Ælis Urf, that doesn't sound well. Hope you'll be able to relax a bit soon :)

@Tinkeringbell The teeth shivering is what happens when I'm tired and the tension finally goes out of my body. Thankfully, my lunch break is almost here :)

@Ælis Enjoy! Mine has already passed. I'm now doomed to another 2,5 hours of slow painstaking programming attempts before I have a meeting. At least I can go home relatively quickly after that :D

I have 3 hours and 45 minutes left in the day

10:50 AM
I won't try to tell you how many hours I have left, I don't want to depress myself :p

11:39 AM
With the release of Avengers: Endgame, I'd like to remind everyone you can disable the Hot Network Questions list in your user preferences. It's the fourth checkbox on that page, the one in the “Sidebar” section. This will hopefully minimise your chance of spoilers coming in the form of HNQ titles.

@doppelgreener Oh, don't worry. I already read the book :P

12:20 PM
@Tinkeringbell I believed it to be a joke but I'm not sure. So, it's a joke, right? There are no Avengers books who could "spoil" the movies, right?

@Ælis It's a joke :)
Even if there is a book (I know parts of it is based on comic books and the marvel universe)... I haven't read it ;)
Or know enough about those comics to know if there is one :P

@Tinkeringbell Okay, you had me confused for a minute here ^^

My apologies :P I'll try to make better jokes next time XD

Haha, this one was probably just too subtle. You should try dumbier jokes :p

JAD
12:55 PM
@Tinkeringbell pretty sure there are comics

Oh my, so many comments to address on my newest question

A J
@Tinkeringbell Come to me next time for good jokes. ;P

I have 3 hours of work left and no motivation/energy left... If people want to chit-chat, I would be happy to read you ^^

I have a problem where apparently the new invoice layout I designed and we've been using for months aren't tax law compliant

JAD
oops

1:04 PM
@Magisch Ouch! It reminds me of someone in my company who just realize that the software for payment they have been using for months wasn't properly working...

Thankfully (?) it's not my fault, but I have to resolve it

JAD
I'm trying to find the cause of timeouts of the data science model we implemented a few months ago. So far, the only explanation I have been able to find is that somehow static properties are being initiated more than once, continuously. As far as my understanding goes, that's not what static is supposed to do. I have no indication that that is what is happening, but it's the only thing I can think of :S

@Magisch I'm assuming that you are not really happy in having to clean someone else mess?
@JAD That is definitively not the kind of issues I would want to have to find the reason of. Good luke to you ^^

JAD
thanks :) we have already excluded load as a cause, because the number of timeouts is proportional with the traffic

@Ælis is annoying, is all

1:16 PM
@Ælis if you need something to do you could go and CV the question that the main man is sure to post soon.

@Rainbacon Sorry but I was the first to close vote this. I'm too quick for you :p

You're the fastest CV in the west

Ahah :p
@Rainbacon You could also see it as me being some kind of professional IPS stalker (which is way creepier) which allow me to be this fastest CV in the west :p

the mod election is going to be competitive isn't it?

Q: How can I explain to my girlfriend why I prefer the current charity I support?

ChrisI support a charity based in my country that helps people escape a specific oppressive government and relocate to other countries as refugees. If I'm being completely honest, I don't really know why I like this charity so much. It could be that I think it's one of the worst crises in the world to...

1:27 PM
I'm curious, what are your thoughts on "Hi <user>, welcome to IPS! Unfortunately, your question is off topic..." I'm specifically curious about the use of the word unfortunately

@Magisch I'm not sure what you imply by that?

@Ælis There are several users here who would make great mods but only 1 spot
on most beta sites they usually struggle to fill nominations and people win by default

@Rainbacon I use it all the time so I think it's fine but I'm not a native English speaker so I might be missing something
@Magisch Oh I didn't know that!

JAD
@Rainbacon similar to "I'm sorry to say that..."
IPS question: how to politely tell someone their question is off-topic without scaring them away from the website?
2

@Magisch There are indeed, but I believe that we all get along pretty well together. The none mod might just organize a mutiny against the newly elected one in protest of the fact that they lose :p

1:32 PM
It seems a little odd to me to say that it is unfortunate that someone's question is off topic, as fortune had nothing to do with it. But maybe it's just a similar thing to telling someone you are sorry even though you've done nothing wrong. I believe the term is sympathy? Or am I confusing that with empathy?

@Rainbacon In my mind, it's like the "I'm sorry for your loss" when someone dies. (I believe the term is "sympathy" but you are making me doubt ^^)

@Ælis I always get them confused

@Ælis competitive doesn't have to be vicious
it's possibly to fiercely compete in good sport :p

@Magisch "Competition" always sounds bad to me. But if you mean that it might be difficult to choose between the candidates, it's really possible that it will be ^^

@Magisch for what it's worth, I think having a competitive election is a good sign for the site. It means that there are many people who care enough about the site to want to volunteer to moderate it. Not only that, but it means that once the election is over there will still be plenty of community members doing moderation tasks (which IPS desperately needs to have happen)

1:38 PM
@Rainbacon what about "Hi X, welcome on IPS! As it stands/right now, your question is off-topic because XYZ." Then you can either say "Maybe you could do ZYX to try to make in on-topic" or "I don't tihnk there's a way to make this on-topic, I'm sorry". Then "check out our tour/our help center/our FAQ. Have a great time among us"

@avazula those do sound nice

:D I'm glad you like my phrasing cause that's what I almost always use haha

@Rainbacon "which IPS desperately needs to have happen" -> Do you feel like it's still true? We use do need it even more and I believe we are doing fine now (even if there is room for improvement) but I'm curious to know how you feel about it

@Ælis I mean it will be bloody hard for me to choose who gets the first second and third vote

Let's see who decides to run first :)

1:42 PM
@Magisch At least we get to choose between first, second and third. Having to vote for only one person makes things even more complicating (and, sometimes, heart breaking)

@Ælis Yes I think it will always be true. My statement was not intended to mean that IPS needs moderation, but that moderation on IPS needs to primarily come from the community.

@Rainbacon I definitively agree with that

2:10 PM
Morning, world! :-)

Morning, Tiny!

Hello!

How does the day see you guys so far? :-)

@avazula Thanks to you, now I have this song in my head:
:p

I would have listened to this if I weren't in a meeting rn :p (you're welcome ♥)

2:14 PM
@Ælis Not sure I like the fact that it started playing by default, but I'm thinking that might be due to me expanding the box?

@Rainbacon It never did that to me. But I agree that auto-play is never nice :/
@avazula If I wasn't at work, I would have listened to it too (so, I posted it, but I'm not even sure that it's the right music who is being played xD ) (Also, <3 for you too <3 )

@Ælis I think it's because I use the dark theme extension for chrome which oneboxes and collapses links by default. When I uncollapsed it was when the autoplay started.

@Rainbacon Arf, that isn't a nice side effect :/

@Rainbacon You can turn that off, I think

@TheTinyMan My left arm is hurting me without any obvious reasons and I'm tired and want to go home (1h30 of work left). What about you?

2:24 PM
@Ælis Man, that doesn't sound like fun at all! :-( I'm not doing too badly right now. Of course the day is still young for me, there's all kinds of opportunity for it to go badly! ;-) But I'm optimistic!

@Tinkeringbell The options that exist are to collapse oneboxes by default and to stop media playback when the box is collapsed, but I didn't see one to stop it from resuming when you expand the onebox

@TheTinyMan Well, my arm does that sometimes and I'm used to the tiredness, so there isn't anything unusual here. But the good news is: the season of public holidays has started (we have a lot of public holiday in May), so I will have more time to rest \o

Ah, found it. There's also one for "Show youtube links inline"
@Ælis How many do you have each year?

@Ælis And what's the next one coming up? :-)

@TheTinyMan next wednesday! o/
and then the wednesday after that! o/

2:31 PM
@Rainbacon 11 public holidays and 3 of them are in May ^^ The next one is the 1 May (then there is the 8 May)

Holiday everyday!

@avazula Haha :p May always has been one of my favorite month for exactly this reason :p

What's the next one celebrate? :-D

@TheTinyMan The end of combat of WWII
(in europe)

@Ælis That sounds like a pretty darn good reason to have a holiday :-P

2:35 PM
@TheTinyMan Definitively. It's much more better than: "This is a sacred day for Christian, have a day off" when a huge part of the population isn't really Christian (doesn't believe/care about good) and another part follow another religion with other sacred days

@Ælis You're telling me! I think that's more than half of the holidays in the US! >.<

I wish I got 11 holidays. I only get 9
There are more US holidays, but not every company observes all of them

@TheTinyMan Yeah, but your president still "swear on the bible" when we, French people, make a point about "not having any state religion". But then, what about those holidays??? If you want Muslim women to not wear hijab if they work in public service/administration, maybe we can remove those days off? Anyway...
@Rainbacon That interesting. Are you paid more one those other holidays you don't have?

No, I get paid a salary, so I don't get special pay for overtime or working on holidays

Do you work unpaid overtime?

2:45 PM
Sometimes

:/ I must say, this idea really doesn't sit well with me. If I ever do overtime, I will then make sure to do less time shortly after that

hi all! looks like a busy morning(/afternoon/evening) in here :)

Hi @EmC!
ugh, the speaker on my computer is being very fuzzy and I didn't have time to restart and fix before this meeting I'm in, so now I have to listen to this awful static until the end of the meeting

@Rainbacon Arg, good luke to you! I know something like that could drive me crazy ^^'
@EmC Helllo :)

It's awful, but the meeting is almost over

2:56 PM
ugh yeah, static is so annoying

I was going to restart before the meeting, but then windows told me it was going to update and I didn't want to miss the meeting.

@Rainbacon I guess it's a short meeting then?

Yeah, it's our standup which usually lasts 15 minutes

@Rainbacon oh, Windows.. I don't blame you for waiting :P

At least it isn't too long. Even if 15minutes of static is definitively long enought!

3:04 PM
@EmC Yeah, I don't like that when it wants to update you don't get a choice to restart without updating.

@Ælis You're telling me. And we claim that separation of church and state is a core value in this country...but there's definitely a huge segment of the population that doesn't believe in that.

@Rainbacon question for superuser maybe? superuser.com/questions/1030085/…

@Ælis I've been fortunate, that's how this actually tends to go for me - if I've worked a lot of overtime one week, usually it's expected that I'll 'make up' the 'extra' time the following week or something. And that seems to be the culture where I work now even more than where I've worked in the past. (Also salaried, incidentally.)

@TheTinyMan For me it depends a lot on why I'm working overtime. For example, a few years ago we had to work a late night deployment, so they gave us a day off during the week to compensate, but sometimes there's a big deadline and we just need to put in 50 hours one week to meet it.

@Rainbacon I've definitely had both of those things happen. I actually feel like the companies I've worked for are more likely to give me more recovery time for the second type of event than the first. :-p

3:11 PM
Oh, @Tinkeringbell thanks for linking that meta about not closing questions just because they are on topic for TWP on my question.

@TheTinyMan I'm often surprised by how blind we are on the fact that church and state aren't as much separate as we want to believe it is.

My advice on this is to always separate private and work life, no matter in which aspect. That means you have a private account with which you can do whatever you want, and a work account which you purely use to promote your work. If at all, the only connection between those accounts should be your private account reffering someone to your business account, but nothing else. — XtremeBaumer 39 secs ago

@Ælis Yeah. It's pretty easy for me to see, as someone who doesn't believe in the same things as the dominant religion in my country, and has a strong moral system that nonetheless doesn't derive from that religion and therefore has some glaring conflicts.

3:13 PM
@TheTinyMan Interesting, I've not usually gotten any recovery time for that since I've been a salaried employee. Had a summer job in college that would have us do overtime at the end of the month to maximize the margin for the month and then send us home early the next week because there wasn't enough work to do

@TheTinyMan That certainly must help. I know I wasn't aware of those things until I decided to learn more about Muslim women (and people in general) and the discriminations they face for being Muslim in France

3:29 PM
does anyone know if The Water Cooler chat is ok with people asking for help on related but different stack questions? (not sure if I should suggest that to our twitter-profile OP or if Workplace folks don't like that)

@EmC not sure, but I do know The Water Cooler chat is okay with questions about the scope of The Water Cooler chat ;)

@EmC Can that OP even chat in The Water Cooler? They only have 9 rep on TWP

@EmC Yeah, as scohe said, you should probably ask that in the Water Cooler ^^

@scohe001 heh, fair point :P
@Rainbacon I think it's just 20 on any site / total SE sites

Wait, could someone with no rep be able to chat by making accounts on 20 different sites?

3:34 PM
@Rainbacon ......... hmmmm
(except it's fixed now)

@EmC You scared me a little here ^^'

anyways, they have 20 rep from their freelancing post so I think they should be good

Very interesting

3:51 PM
@Rainbacon there's three chat servers: .stackexchange, .meta.stackexchange and .stackoverflow. you need 20 rep on SE (any site except MSE or SO), 20 rep on MSE and 20 on SO respectively to chat in each of them

4:05 PM
ah

4:39 PM
hmm two people now have commented on how I handled someone criticizing a feature I built in the the team chat yesterday... not sure if that's good or bad xP

What were the comments like?

well, the conversation started with someone saying basically "I thought I would like [feature], but I don't"
I followed up with ":( what don't you like about it?"

And what were the comments about how you handled it?

ohh, haha. one was my manager saying "[person] is a good guy who cares a lot about our product, if you felt like he was being too grumpy or whatever I can talk to him" and the other was a teammate saying "so are you working on changing the controls for that feature now? haha"
I guess at the time I was a bit frustrated about how the guy wasn't very specific, and when he explained the problems it kinda sounded like user error. but I was hoping I didn't come off that way, or taking it too personally

Seems like your manager thought you were upset by the comment. The other one doesn't seem to be one way or another to me.

4:49 PM
yeah, maybe :/
then again, my manager's comment was also in our first one-on-one meeting so I probably looked a lot more anxious just from that than I really was.. feedback in person almost always makes me uncomfortable, even when it's good
[closed as "intrapersonal problem"] :P

@EmC Aww... sounds like you had fun :/

5:06 PM
@Tinkeringbell in the meeting? it was actually fine overall, we also talked about the performance review stuff and he said I was doing good and all that :)

@EmC Oh, that sounds better :)

I am just one of those people who is bad at taking a compliment :P
yeah, my team is actually pretty cool :)

@EmC Perhaps you should see this answer to help with that problem

@Rainbacon ooh yeah, that's a good one :D

@TheTinyMan I was going to complain to you about how terrible Javascript is because the date object has day of the month being a value between 1 and 31 with every other field 0 indexed, but then I found out that pretty much every language is like that

@Rainbacon Pretty much! I'd be so mad if it were any other way, too! ;-)

7:03 PM
Just finished a mini bear :) #crochet

Tahdah!

@Tinkeringbell That's adorable!

Was I showing off the tiny crochet to @ava or @Ælis yesterday?
Wowsers... I posted that one on a Facebook group too, and my notifications are going nuts :/

7:25 PM
@Tinkeringbell It wasn't me (even though I did admire the octopus you made). When I see your tiny work, I'm under the impression that all the object around are really big because my mind can't admit how tiny your work is x)

@Ælis Yeah, I usually take a bath every Saturday in that thimble :P
(don't tell anyone else XD)

Haha x)

@Tinkeringbell A bath sounds kind of nice, I wish I could take one of those

@Tinkeringbell That is SO CUTE!

@TheTinyMan Careful. It's a bear, they're dangerous! :P

7:32 PM
The cuddles would be worth getting mauled for xD

@TheTinyMan cuddles? With something about 2cm tall? :P
You'll crush it :(

oh no! D: Poor guy!

@Tinkeringbell No he won't, he's a tiny man

@Rainbacon That's true...
Perhaps they're made for each other then :P

little little man...

@Tinkeringbell We arrrrre! <3 <3

@Anadactothe Hi! Welcome :D

@Anadactothe Hello! Welcome, and remember that the silence is only awkward if you let it be :)
