@Ash That's great :D I've been looking at a lot of boots lately... I'm kinda worried about getting them though since it's getting close to spring
@ElizB finish your movie yet? :)

@Anilla no not yet, havent started, facetiming with my 8 mo old neice

@ElizB Oooo, aww that's cute :D

@Anilla so. cute. she recently started crawling and climbing
so she's all over the place

@ElizB Sounds adorable!! Does it make you want kids? Haha
(assuming you don't have any since I haven't heard them mentioned before :) )

1:59 AM
@Anilla I do want kids. I'm hoping within the next two years I have kids of my own :)

@ElizB Good deal :D

@Anilla yep :)

@ElizB I know some people decide their children's names quite early on... are you one of those? Hehe

@Anilla hmm, no
My sister named her daughter Juliet
it's a lovely name

Ooo, I like it too. What criteria would you use to name yours? :P

2:06 AM
@Anilla Nothing ridiculous

@ElizB She a Shakespeare fan?

maybe, haha

Juliet is common enough that it isn't necessarily where it came from
We named our daughter Cordelia

I like Cordelia too :)

@bruglesco that's a lovely name! it reminds me of Anne of Green Gables :)

2:18 AM
@EmC Thank you. But I don't get the connection. (Never saw or read it)

@bruglesco It was one of the names that Anne liked to imagine she was named - she was a very imaginative girl :)

ahh
That seems like a reasonable pretense to read it. (It doesn't take much)

It's a good series! I read them all a few times growing up, Anne is quite the character

Haven't read the books :P although I did view the film version(s). It's good stuff!
@El'endiaStarman Uhhhh, random side question. Are you familiar with something called a "differential surrogate"? This thingy I'm looking at mentions them but I can't find any good breakdowns of what they are...

@Anilla Never heard of that!

2:35 AM
@El'endiaStarman I have something here called a "softplus" function, defined as: $f(x)=\ln(1+e^x)$ and then its derivative is actually the sigmoid function: $f(x)=\frac{1}{1+e^{-x}}$ The article I'm viewing right now says that the "softplus" function is the "differential surrogate" of ReLU: $f(x)=max(0, x)$
I don't see the relation between the ReLU function and the softplus... as neither the integral or derivative of softplus would yield $f(x)=max(0,x)$

Ah, that's actually pretty neat.
So, imagine x = -1000. Then e^x is basically 0, so f(x) ~= ln(1) = 0. Now, conversely, imagine x = 1000. Then e^x completely overwhelms the 1+ part of it, so f(x) ~= ln(e^x) = x.
max(0, x) is not differentiable (because of the slope discontinuity at x=0).

Ohhhhh I think I understand? So you can say ReLU is related because of the limits of the softplus function? Because the boundaries of softplus reach the same defined by the piecewise ReLU?

Basically. Take a look at this: wolframalpha.com/input/…

@El'endiaStarman Ahh yes. Visually they're very similar. Softplus adds a bit of curvature rather than ReLU. In terms of the raw definitions though, is my understanding is correct?

2:52 AM
In the limit, yes, they are equal.

@El'endiaStarman Ok thanks a ton! This is really helpful :)

Welcome! :)

Cool runnings is a great movie! Haha

user15026
It's one of my favorites, I am glad you liked it :)

@ElizB Aha got it finished! XD Favorite part??

user15026
(I totally use "I see pride! I see power! I see a badass mother who won't take no crap off of nobody!" as a mantra to really get myself pumped up at the gym sometimes, thanks to that movie >.>)

*beep* ElizB is currently away from her computer. Please leave your messages at the tone and she will get back to you tomorrow. *boop*
I'm off to bed myself as well. G'night all! :)

Q: I Need help to understand my relationship?

Blake JacobsI have autism and I am very confused at the moment I have this girl that I love a lot and she is very close to my dad and we both have feelings for each other. We have been friends for about 2 years and it's been a long two years because my feelings have got more intense. I gave her the ultimatum...

Q: At a loss about how to handle aggressively noisy upstairs neighbors that, now, clearly are trying to provoke me

Brian I moved into a ground floor apartment a little over a year ago. No long after two young men moved in above me. Within the first week I was constantly being awoken by loud stomping, heavy items being dropped, etc. They were pretty quite during the day and only made these types of noises after mid...

Q: If someone you only kind of know let’s you crash after a night out, when do you leave?

TheEnvironmentalistSay you go with a few friends on a night out, in the downtown fairly far from where you live. Afterwards, rather than dealing with how to get home, a friend of a friend offers the couch in their shared apartment. Not ideal, but you take it for convenience. You wake up at 7am, and assume your une...

@Anilla that mantra, and when they arrived they had to get accustomed to that ice and cold and I found it hilarious when I figured out a possible place that the lucky egg was stored haha

good afternoon :)

how time flies! :P

yup lol
doing some GIS homework
My sister is playing on the xbox "lego worlds"

@ElizB neat, that looks similar to minecraft :)

question for the comment bot users - I'm thinking of editing the "tp" and "rude" responses to include a message to encourage flagging, since I've noticed sometimes messages get "tp" in chat but aren't flagged on the main site. Do you think this is worth adding? and if so any suggestions for how to word it? I don't want it to be too annoying :P

@EmC I think it's worth it to add a reminder. For me personally, a comical reminder that the bot does not do stuff for me makes me go find it and flag
like "i'm not your mother! Go ahead and flag the question what you reported it as"
maybe that's annoying to other people but it would be funny to me

hahah
I was just thinking like, "Don't forget to flag!" :P

@EmC something like that would be nice for those who know how to flag
gotta consider new people too

8:11 PM
hmm, true but I kinda figure if someone is using the bot, they'll probably know how to flag or can ask

Did anyone vote to close this question: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/21089/… lol?
It seems etiquette based to me, I just wanted to see if maybe I'm looking at it incorrectly.
Also hello! :D

@Anilla looking at it now.. 4 close votes already ;)

it feels like a "what should I do" question but I also realize it is about etiquette
we can't tell the person what to do and even if they ask what is the best thing to do it's still opinion based

Do you think it could have the phrasing adjusted to fix it?
Or is it just behind redemption :P

@EmC I'm all for the funny reminder! (I regular one would be so much boring! :p )

8:16 PM
@Ælis something like boop beep I am not your mother. Please go flag the comment what you told me it was"

hehe, I like the robot beeps :)

@ElizB I'm not really comfortable with the "I'm not your mother" (it kind of imply that mothers are a servant to their kids) :/
I was thinking more of something like "Sorry, I'm stupid and lazy, you are gonna need to flag that yourself"

@Anilla I'm trying to search some things, but I haven't found anything so far to indicate there's "etiquette", so I'm leaning towards saying it's primarily opinion-based..

@EmC I'm editting it rn to try and on-topic-ize it lol. Don't vote to close just yeetttt xD

@Ælis No worries, I knew someone wouldn't feel comfortable with it, thanks for pointing that out. :)
@Ælis I like that!
@Anilla it can still be saved if the user understands how their question needs to be edited

8:26 PM
Would ya'll give it another look? I edited it to be more etiquette focused :P

@Anilla it's still a tich opinion based in my opinion

@ElizB Argh! Haha, any recommendations? I really wanna answer this question xD

i'm not sure, sorry. :/

@ElizB Would you say it's opinion based because people could handle the situation differently?

@Ælis aww, I don't want to call the bot stupid either :P maybe "beep boop I'm just a simple bot, you'll have to go flag that yourself!"

8:33 PM
Like it's not necessarily etiquette based, but more so how one would handle x situation

> beep boop My human overlords won't let me flag that, so you'll have to do it yourself.

hehe, I like that one

Alternatively, "Phenomenal cosmic power! Itty bitty living space. You'll have to flag that yourself."

Darn... I've misplaced my phone again XD

pull request created :)
@Anilla need someone to call it for you? :P

8:46 PM
@EmC I found it... I left it in a cabinet again XD AHhHH

user15026
@Anilla If it's android, and you have a Google account attached, google "where is my phone" and it will give you an option to make it ring even if it is silent

user15026
(It also lights up and vibrates)

user15026
(Can you tell I lose my phone a lot)

@Anilla hahah, hooray

Have you ever googled "where is my phone" while using your phone? :P

8:47 PM
@Ash That's really handy! Unfortunately I've surrendered my precious earned american dollars to Apple :P

@El'endiaStarman aww I was hoping for an easter egg

@EmC pull request? :o do you do some computery typed stuff too?

user15026
@Anilla Ah, can't help you there so much

user15026
@El'endiaStarman I did, once, and felt SUPER silly.

I haven't done that before... but I've forgotten I've left things in my hair. Or I'll have my airpods in and then spend half an hour looking for them >_<

8:49 PM
@Anilla yep! I'm a software engineer, working with Java / Android atm

@EmC OMG! Another Java person <3 I didn't know that haha

@Anilla yeah, it's a big range depending on what was agreed the night before, and what status of friendship they have
@Anilla depends on whether the friend feels ok with someone touching their stuff while they're sleeping
there's a lot of "depends" in there

@Anilla :D

@El'endiaStarman I really like this one too :D

@ElizB Maybe instead of focusing on etiquette we instead focus more on the OP's situation specifically? I think they gave enough information for me to conjure it up.

8:52 PM
@Anilla hmm, it doesnt seem like there's enough information to me honestly. I would want to know what the status of that friendship is, what they spoke about the night before, if they agreed on meeting the next morning or whether they did that at all

@EmC Have you used Java 9+ yet? They added a new HTTP client and other cool bits :P
@ElizB They said a "friend of a friend" not "their friend"... I guess it would be rather assuming of me, but that would seem to indicate they don't know them well. And since they didn't mention arrangements before sleeping, I'm also assuming there were none to begin with (I've had a few of those nights before lol). I'll put a comment up and ask though just to be sure :)
@bruglesco Hello :)

yeah, I think the edit is a step in the right direction, but given all the uncertainties here, I am going to VTC that for now, and hopefully OP can clarify so it'll be reopened
@Anilla nope, not yet. I guess I am behind the times :P

@EmC Close makes sense for now. Hopefully OP adds more details 'cause I'd like to throw in my own answer. Java 9 and up aren't really industry standard yet (v8 seems to be the norm rn) so that makes sense. Tbh I haven't really even used 9+ features yet... though I do have JDK 11

haha yeah, I feel like I've just recently gotten used to using lambdas :P

@EmC Ohhhh lambdas... favorite thing lol. Lambdas and the streaming API. I also love the Predicate and Function interfaces

9:04 PM
@Anilla Good idea, yeah.
Like EmC said, wait and see if the user edits and we can go from there

@Anilla what sort of things do you work on?

@Anilla hey back
hey room

o/

@EmC All sorts of things. I primarily used Java as a testing ground for C... I just love the way it classifies things and I can structure all my code in a way that's much easier to understand before I move it over to C. Also used it for Android apps before... I kind of gave that up awhile ago though lol

9:09 PM
I've never seen chat this active on a weekend day before haha

o/

\o/
@Anilla same

Here's a question: Am I slightly crazy for not finding "Human" by Christina Perri sad? XD

@Anilla Its nice because that's when Im around the most.
No. its supposed to be

@bruglesco Ahh that works out then :) I don't find the song sad lol... more so inspirational.

9:24 PM
@Anilla Just because the message is it should be okay that we are vulnerable doesn't mean it isn't sad that the implication is that vulnerability isn't well accepted.

Q: How can I effectively use social media to become closer friends with people I don't see often?

Danny ChiaThere are some people who I want to get to know better, mainly childhood friends I've grown apart from, former co-workers and children of my parents' friends. I'm connected to them on Facebook but don't regularly see them in person. I know it's much better to talk to people face-to-face, but more...

@ExtrovertedMainMan I find social media to be very superficial interaction. Im actually very curious if someone will have a solid useful strategy for this one.

Might write an answer after I finish asking a big huge question ahhH

@Anilla I look forward to the question and the answer.

11:32 PM
@ExtrovertedMainMan hmm, this is definitely a worthwhile question but I'm worried about it being too broad to answer well here.. will be interesting to see the responses, either way :)

@EmC starts writing answer... immediately realizes this is really broad indeed
There's so many different things going on with this question... it's a lot to address

haha yeah, that's kind of what I did too :P
but now that I'm thinking about it, while I've made some friends over the internet, I don't know that I've really gotten to be better friends with someone I already knew IRL.. hmm

exactly

I think that those who you knew personally and don't have a relationship with anymore are just an effect of moving on in life and growing as a person tbh

I joined social media with the "It helps you stay friends with people" mindset. I almost stopped entirely when I realized that isn't at all what was going on

11:36 PM
Social media has the effect of keeping people you've sort of moved on from around...

@Anilla Or reminding you of their existence
and that their life is better than yours

there have definitely been times when I wanted to go back to ye olden days, when you could just move a few towns over and never hear from / cross paths with certain people again :P

Haha yeah, social media kinda carries that around doesn't it?
@EmC Are you writing an answer too?

@Anilla probably not, I don't feel like I have enough success doing that to write one..
