Q: What are the differences between Zie, Sie, Ey, Ve, Tey, E

ProgrammerStack Exchange have released a post about changing their policy and CoC on using personal pronouns. I am not familiar with all of the personal pronouns linked in an article that they cite on the linked meta post. What exactly are the definitions of each of these personal pronouns, and their diff...

I'm not sure about this one, it feels pretty broad to me regardless of how relevant this discussion is and I certainly don't disagree with the question being asked and discussed i'm just not sure if IPS is the place to answer that specific question? Thoughts? I'm open for feedback and education if I am wrong.

@ElizB It's a language question. It's off topic for IPS.

@Tinkeringbell Afternoon!

Wish it were here too, then it'd be weekend sooner!

Only 6 more hours to go. :P

TGIF!

Really, TGIF. I had a coworker fall out ill for two weeks, she was back yesterday, but is taking days off again today and Monday. I'm basically stuck with her work, which she didn't meet her deadlines on and now I have to do it and I hate it ....
And her.

8:05 AM
Morning :)

A J
I worked only three days so far in this week including today. So, this weekend came very quickly. Plus I got lots of holidays this month.

8:21 AM
Oh that sounds so nice!
Wish I could say the same :P
I'm now stuck on Friday with work that has a deadline of a week ago AAAAH

Tell me about it
My project is due for like three months ago xD

Q: Is it fair to impose one's values to others?

Brian Díaz FloresAs I see it, values are not self-evident nor have an inherent valorization on themselves; they are always defined based on a preexistent value. This is lead us to a point where we define a basic, fundamental value only because "we find that value as valuable. Because of the way our brains are wir...

Watcha think about the edit on this question? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/23120/4550
Seems still too broad for me but I wanted second thoughts

8:57 AM
Yeah, pretty broad still... As there's not much info on how they've already approached their partner about this or why they think they need help...

9:34 AM
@Tinkeringbell they said in comments they haven't

Hmm. We really need to have some kind of general 'How do I have a good conversation about sexual topics' baseline question I think... Because now we're getting so many about just parts/different kinds of sex that are broad enough to probably be answered by a general one :/

@Tinkeringbell I think this explains well why they didn't: "I don't want to ask in a way that puts any blame for anything on them, or maybe in a way that doesn't make them uncomfortable or embarrassed if there is a reason for it.". I don't really see what else they could add?

@Ælis Well, I kinda want to know what they're planning on doing then, that makes them fear they would be perceived this way?
Then again... I was always taught to just ask and talk in sex-ed. I guess most people weren't ;)

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I can pretty much tell you that's not how I was taught regarding sex (which is a shame, IMO, everyone should be able to talk freely about that. Especially about that)

@Ælis I guess that's really one thing that amazed me... how 'matter of fact' things were in those lessons, and how open people are to doing 'it' right.

10:29 AM
\o/

@CaldeiraG Nice, congrats!

10:57 AM
@Ælis Thanks :) and I have about 500 review to do on First Posts to get to the hall of fame of SU :D

11:19 AM
@CaldeiraG haha nice.. but don't abuse "No action needed"
@EmC sorry for another round of flags(bullets) on a single post. Tried to incorporate all by OP in the question, and flagged debate about info revelation.
No feedback from the downvoter? — Oscar Chambers 5 hours ago
@Ælis (teasing ya)

11:34 AM
not that I want to keep the comment for long, but that was a real fp.

11:50 AM
@ankii Lol :p i learned my lesson to not stay with the mouse on "no action needed"
maybe next time lol

That's a todo for bot developers..
Rain will visit this anyway.. Or should I flag that for removal too >< (evil laugh)

xD

there we go..
wait, was Rain pinged again lol.. ? I can do this all day then

The latest comments on that question make it off-topic.

A J
Evening!

12:06 PM
@ankii That still sound chatty and of not real value to me (it's fine to let it stay until the OP sees it, but it doesn't "suggest improvements or ask for clarification")

Hopefully OP had read it, and it's poofed now.

It's not poofed but you can delete it anytime ^^

I did.
@Tinkeringbell That's what I was afraid of.. she shouldn't have said so..
@Rainbacon could you write experimental in that reason? I thought it was regular AIC
didnt mean to "cheat"
@AJ server not responding. :( What is it?

A J
Google "I can do this all day" on Google Images and you will know what is it.

@ankii I know it confused me at first too, but we mark something as "tp" if the comment should be deleted, even if it doesn't match the reason given in the regex (so, if something is rude, we would "tp" it even if it was catch as "answer in comment")

12:15 PM
But that spoils the training of the bot.. I unknowingly did that. You reverted it, I appreciate it.

No worry ^^ (also, a "tp" or "fp" can't be revert, we can just add more "tp" or "fp" on top of them, but having three tp instead of one don't make a difference (so far) on how the bot treat it)

ohh.. I wish I could be a bit more focused to save some time for such interesting bots, among other things to do.

I understand the feeling. I, too, wish I could help with it (but I'm not planning on learning Ruby anytime soon, so...)

12:40 PM
@ankii I did get pinged twice. And I might update that at some point, when I'm back at a computer

2 hours later…
2:43 PM
I've been working on an issue on of our clients' servers for the last two days. I narrowed it down to some strange looking rows in our SQL db. Every row we have has a "Record Version" column (that starts at 0 and increments). These all had the same record number--some big number in the thousands. My coworker joked this morning that maybe it's a JIRA task number, so I looked it up and...it's an old task from a problem dev had fixed months ago on this server and that dev's fix is what was causing the problem, which made it trivial to solve now. But the realization that the record version was

JIRA task numbers? what are those? My coworkers just branch a dev-initials branch from development, make their changes, commit it with a 'dev-initials' message, and merge it back :/
I'm working on changing it but it's slow. I think actually getting a gitlab/JIRA plugin rolling might create a bit more awareness.

@Tinkeringbell ... that's...horrifying. How do you keep track of what does what or what's getting patched? O_O

@scohe001 Ohhh, let me tell you about our 7k line patch file :P

....
But..uh..you at least have unit tests...right??

unit ... wat

2:48 PM
If you make your changes and have committed them, you're up for a ride. You open the patch, search to see if the method you changed is already in there... if it is, you can just copy-paste your changes over it. If it's not... well, good luck finding the 'right' spot to insert your changes!
@scohe001 What ava said :P

@Tinkeringbell wait...your version control doesn't have a way to graft changes into a patch for you automatically? You do it all by hand?!

So every regression test is done by hand. And if there's one scenario missed, like last week: You end up with 22 missing electricity cables in prod!
@scohe001 Uhhuh!

Holy moly. That's all I can say. I'm so sorry

More fun: I'm the only one on the team that 'knows' git. The rest grew up with SVN, but the company is now making them use git.

SVN is antique..

2:51 PM
I guess that's what you get when working with severly legacy applications ;) To be a bit more positive: There's another team in the company working on upgrading those applications, and they do have unit tests.

I had to use it once, recently, to get hold of a single binary file out of a repository. Cannot say I fully understood it

Also, those upgraded applications work with feature branches, and releases and it's all very pretty compared to what I'm working with now ;)

@ankii it's only 5yrs older than git ;) at least it's not like...clearcase or something
@Tinkeringbell ahh that makes a little more sense. If this is legacy code, then you're living in the wild west. At least there's a Grand Redesign in the Sky to look forward to

@ankii I joined this company around May last year. They'd be using SVN till late July. I was told to not even try, and just save my work very carefully until such time as they would've switched to Git, and then to commit it XD
@scohe001 Yep :)

Glad the open source org I am trying to work in uses git for main repo and SVN for mundane ones.. And we dont have to go through the intense GitHub UI. They have separate websites for it

2:54 PM
I've tried talking to the COBOL kids who sit down the hall from me and they have similar setups. I still don't understand how half the world works on this stuff, but as long as it keeps working I'm not complaining

Well, that. And to be honest? Kinda feels deliciously bad to write code, but no tests! :P

@Tinkeringbell Isn't that similar to "Don't worry about results, keep doing Karma " ?
Bhagwad Geeta reference

Sorry, don't get the reference :/

quora.com/… Bhagavad-Gita-says-Not-to-worry-or-desire-for-the-result-but-perform-ones-karma-Wont-this-detachment-from-the-desired-result-kill-the-motivation-of-karma
The one website I have allocated big chunk of hate for.

@ankii Quora?

2:59 PM
yes.. do you write there?
I don't dislike Quorans

Thinking what I should answer now?

lol

@ankii I wrote an answer with a lot of typos and grammatical errors

good morning :)

Q: Hypothetical questions rule clarification

Alex RobinsonRegarding the recent CoC changes on SE meta, I came across a post that argues gender has no place on SE - and I largely agree, yet this site is a little different because everything IS personal, and sex / gender can definitely play a role in how questions are answered (rightly so, in my opinion) ...

4:15 PM
Huh.
I don't really understand.

me either

5:00 PM
I'm not entirely sure either, but I took a whack at answering it anyways :P

@EmC Hah. I saw your edit, thought that it made sense, started answering, saw yours... so just dropped my quotes and links under your answer. Hope you don't mind ;)
Looks good to me!

@Tinkeringbell thanks :D
I'll add that in

Cool, you can get rid of the comment afterwards if you'd like :)
@bruglesco You still holding up so far? :)

5:20 PM
@Ælis someone asked on meta about why Cesar should take the rep loss which surprisingly, became ~550 * 2. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/335134/…
The same answer you gave, with some added info.

5:43 PM
@Tinkeringbell I've been worse

@bruglesco <3 Just keep swimming ;)

Thank you. I'll try.

Glad to hear. Don't overdo the trying to your own detriment though!

Afternoon everyone. How's today going?

This evening is better than today? I don't have to work on my coworkers crap anymore... I'm about to go enjoy a hot bath, and then afterwards drinks and snacks :D
I promised mom we would play boardgames tonight. It's usually fun once we're both a bit tipsy.
How's your today going so far?
Oh, I also got an email that the bank approved my home loan, so I'm reading legalese right now.

5:53 PM
@Tinkeringbell Congrats!

@sphennings Thanks :D

I'm in a similar boat to you with respect to teaching people Git.

It's... I'd prefer them to use git bash, as it's easier to search for commands online... they're using tortoiseGit :/
So teaching them is... slow.
What are you using?

I spent a year convincing people that migrating from Perforce to Git was a good idea and now I'm the go-to person for every git question.
I wrote all my training docs based off using the command line. Every other tool is built off that and most of them have some operations that are easier to do from the command line.
It's a windows shop so Powershell + PoshGit

Oh, you actually wrote training docs! That's an idea... I'm just showing people and sometimes drawing a bit on the whiteboard.

5:57 PM
I've also done a lot of whiteboard scribblings.
It's the easiest way to explain rebasing.

I find it helps, especially if you give each branch it's own colour ;)
@sphennings I just told a coworker 'you shall not rebase' this week. :P There's really no need for it, the way we're branching.
And he just messed it up XD

If you have local branches a rebase is cleaner than a merge.
I have a slightly modified rule which is "YOU SHALL NOT REBASE SHARED HISTORY!!!"

^ Which is exactly what the guy did, of course :P

*facepalm

My thoughts exactly :P

6:00 PM
I included rebasing in the training docs but repeatedly emphasized that there were risks associated with it and we expected them to do it right or not at all.
This scared most of them enough so that we haven't had any rebase related problems so far. (~2 months in)

But I've never used rebase much, I've always worked with a single local feature branch that's pushed upstream and then merged via merge request. So it took me quite a while to figure out what a rebase does, and why it went horribly wrong!

I like them for organizing my thoughts as a final step before I push a branch to remote.

@sphennings Oh, good! I've so far had people mess up submodules, a lot of panicking over branches that weren't attached to an upstream one, and someone making a new branch for each commit...

We aren't using submodules which helps a lot.

@sphennings To be honest, I liked GitHub better than GitLab: If you were looking at your branch, it automatically did the comparison between your branch and whatever you branched from... In Gitlab, I always have to navigate to a 'compare' tab to see only the commits I made on a branch.

6:04 PM
That's messy.

@sphennings Oh, we have one that we couldn't work around having... but the person that set it up kinda made a mess and then I made more mess (because I have never set one up, all I knew was that the previous project required me to git update submodule --remote from time to time :P)
I figured it out eventually.
Now all my coworkers just need to run that command from time to time ;)

6:28 PM
@bruglesco I just saw that, it kind of made my day x) i.stack.imgur.com/VLqFB.jpg

I tried to add a voice of logic into the mix. @Ælis do you think I could word any of this better? (meta.stackexchange.com/q/335163/232439)

@Ælis except now they are using it as an attack on Sara

@scohe001 I think you should state that you are just curious before actually asking your question, it would make it less "aggressive"
@bruglesco True that :(
@scohe001 May I try editing it?
It's an interesting question by the way :)

Yea, I was worried that's how it would read. That was why I added the paragraph at the end. I moved it up to the top
Oh, sure! Go to town. Just note I may edit it further ;)

(if you want me to delete that comment on meta @Ælis I can, I just....... am very frustrated right now)
@scohe001 so close to a Star Wars reference there ;)

6:35 PM
@EmC Nah, I love it <3

Ahh I'm not a Star Wars buff, so I completely missed it

@scohe001 Before editing, are you also interested on data for site like IPS or just for SO?

@Ælis some comments on my answer were talking about other sites. They'd be interesting and I'd like them as answers, but I think for the main question I'm just going to stick to SO

Alright, I'll try to edit accordingly :)

6:37 PM
@EmC Damn. It's too late for me to edit the original message to "I am editing your edit. Pray I don't edit it any further." :P

yo dawg, I heard you like edits..

See, if I was a mod right now, I'd edit your message to say "so I edited your edit so you could have edits in your edit the next time you edit."
But alas, I can't become a mod by wanting to pull these shenanigans :(

hahaha. we're missing out ;)

Lol it's more like how much of that kinda stuff could I pull off before I'm kicked from the mod team :p

@scohe001 If you want to go the extra step, I think you should add "(quite the opposite)" after "I'd like to note that I'm not trying to declare pronouns unimportant."

6:44 PM
Edit looks good @Ælis, thanks! I guess you liked the disclaimer more at the bottom :p

It felt more natural that way ^^

@Ælis I'd prefer not to add that, only because I want to keep the post impartial. I think showing support (or a lack thereof) for pronouns is going to turn any post into a firestorm at this point. I'm trying to walk the fine line in the middle. I want this one to just be about cold hard data :)

@scohe001 Then, maybe add a "definitively" in the middle? "I'd like to note that I'm definitively not trying to declare pronouns unimportant.". Without it, it can still sound a little like troll

Also totally didn't realize that was you. I love the avatar! I've heard really good things about Dragon Prince, but haven't had the chance to watch it yet

Alright, need to go now, but I'll probably be back later (so don't hesitate to ping me in the mean time)
@scohe001 Hehe :p And yeah, Dragon Prince is definitively awsome

6:49 PM
ohh @Ælis I love your profile over at MSE
I changed my name over there as well. I am now AGirlHasNoName

@Ælis how's that look?
Ahh just saw your other message about being out. Ping me when you see it the edit then. And thanks for the help :)
@bruglesco I hope you know that you've solidified yourself as being short in my mind with that name :p

@scohe001 Is 5'6" too tall?
to be short

Hmm. I feel like that's average. But compared to @TheTinyMan that's short and they have "tiny" in their name sooooo
I'm calling it short for naming consistency purposes :p

Good. I like being short

Q: Starting a new relationship after ending one due to incompatibility but not loss of love

haaaalpBack Story I recently ended a five year relationship with a person who, in many ways, I still love deeply. We lived together for several years and, after she left for graduate school, I found the sense of freedom exhilarating and rapidly felt I was rediscovering parts of myself I'd inhibited for...

6:58 PM
@ExtrovertedMainMan WSID Off-topic :(

@scohe001 Sounds good to me :)

@Ælis I had to dig up an old upvote to find out your current profile.. It's cute

@bruglesco Thanks :D and Thanks @ankii too :D
Also, saw what I did? Now everyone as to call me "Beloved" if they want to ping me mouhahaha :p

@CaldeiraG you might be the first person I've seen use an acronym for that :o

@Ælis would you like to answer the question that condemns this?

7:02 PM
@EmC :p

@EmC it makes it easier for us too!

at first I read it like "WASD" and was very confused :P

@ankii I don't even want to read it ^^

oh ok xd

lol I just commented on that question. regret in 3... 2...

7:03 PM
ohh god

@EmC RUN YOU FOOL!!!

You have been very active and visible through all this

hahaha xP

@EmC I don't see anything, do i need to blame caching? :p

refresh and expand comments, and cmd + F, or simply latest.

7:04 PM
maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it here :P

@ankii yeah, still nothing :)

I'm out of upvotes but it was a good comment

where is ava to link the website about caching
:D

since she regrets mentioning it here, I won't quote it.. which Q are you searching btw?

well, if it's poofed somehow, at least I don't have to worry about angry pings? :P

7:06 PM
@ankii at the question i used WSID
i'm watching the front page on activity and nothing shows up too
:D

naaa... meta post about director's retweet

posting on IPS meta is way less stressful. go read those posts instead :P

oh a new meta post about the tweet
i've seen that screenshot somewhere before the q was made
appears that a new topic was opened again xd

otoh,(read carefully Em :P) when am I getting the rest of my rep which will hit rep cap again? for the rep hiding bug.

@ankii people are still upvoting that? heh

7:08 PM
I got ~+5 after acceptance..

Whoa! nice..

Pew pew pew

Hello

7:11 PM
hallo :)

halo was a good game.. <3 , you reminded me of that

<3 :p
oh crap, i just noticed
a guy on SU just deleted his account everywhere except Meta :(
another great contributor gone

Someone modified my query in the Meta post to pull all your past gendered comments (on SO, but you can change the site). In case you're curious about your past: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1124222/…

@scohe001 oh nice

@scohe001 can it be edited such that if 0 is entered in id, all comments are searched?
ummm should I flag this?
@CodyGray: Obligatory link: A witch! Burn her!einpoklum 15 mins ago

7:15 PM
well, my activity on SO is almost null
didn't expect anything else

@ankii I'd highly advise against searching all comments on SO. It'd probably timeout. At most I'd do a date range (like I did in the original query)
@CaldeiraG but did you try on super user ;)

yeah I meant that original one to be the default search criteria if 0 is entered.

How do you get your user id

profile page link

@ankii might as well... there's a lot that could be nuked there really

7:18 PM
@ankii thanks

@scohe001 I did, 5 comments

checking individually :p

I have 12

7:21 PM
I had once called Siri "her" . Their voice was female at that time..

well, the last 3 i was referring to Op as "he" indeed :)

ummm, I can be safe of that allegation by claiming that I meant user preferences. It says American Female, Australian Male etc.

hmm some of mine were problematic
I'm glad you pointed this out to me so I can improve it

Yea I have a good chunk that are just blatant assumptions of "he"/"him" which isn't great

mine are safe, except at one point, I use him/her for Allan xu
1. Declare you reject the new CoC as coercive and inappropriate.
2. Ignore it in your SE activity
That can lead to suspension right?
I'm sorry, this is the last meta post I am bringing here...

7:34 PM
@ankii You can ignore it without breaking rules :p
he is a user of SO, i just saw that answer

I am going to bed. Night!

night :D

7:54 PM
@Tinkeringbell I'm doing well, just got out of a job interview that I think went well. I'm not sure if I'll take the job if offered, but I need to talk it over with Mrs bacon before I decide

ohh I completely forgot it was coming out day
hides in closet

@bruglesco Weird, I don't see you logged in overthere :p

@Rainbacon Oh nice! What makes you think you might not take the job though?
@bruglesco Too late! ;)

@Tinkeringbell Im only out here.
and my wife knows

@bruglesco No worries then, we'll keep your secret ;)
And if people don't, just bring em to me

8:09 PM
aww thank you. That should definitely be enough to terrify anyone away.

Ooh did I hear I can get a free trip to the Netherlands?
I mean...ahh! I'm terrified!!

:[

Sorry, having been to the Netherlands once, I can tell you that it's super awesome (and I'd definitely want to go back!). But your secret > the Netherlands<3

Someone respond in a comment to me, but I don't understand their last sentence. Could anyone tell me if it's rude or not? "But I am convinced we are not over what you do in private life (including basic metabolism) or insist I refer to you as they."

@Ælis I think maybe the "we are not over" is meant to read "we are not in disagreement over"? it's hard to parse for me too

8:15 PM
I'm with @EmC on this one. I took the easy route for you tho :p

haha hi there @scohe001

Greetings friend!

@EmC Yeah, I think it should be read like that (so not offensive) but the "including basic metabolism" throw me of track ^^

Also I wanted to praise your composure in the meta comments today Em. You've been doing a lot better than I would've.

I didn't read much of the meta comments, but you are indeed doing great EmC :)

8:18 PM
ha, thanks.. I always get a little worried about that

@Ælis The basic metabolism bit doesn't make sense to me either

@bruglesco Maybe "we eat and sh*t all the same"? So a weird way to say "we are all humans"? x)

I have no idea.

@Ælis that's what I was thinking, but who's to say ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The commenter, I guess :p

8:21 PM
Just read your comment @EmC very well said.

:)

It's unfortunate that it was followed by more people explaining why it isn't okay to feel that way.

A feeling I share btw. Sorry to keep bringing up MSE stuff though

sometimes I feel like IPS people are put under more of a microscope - I've seen comments like "wow you're on IPS and you seem rude? irony??"
whereas I don't think I've ever seen stuff like "wow you're a mod on SO and you missed a null pointer exception??" :P

@CaldeiraG D:

8:25 PM
@CaldeiraG I just like that your C's can have little goatees

@scohe001 xD

@EmC Ahah xD

@EmC don't worry, 1/3 of the terms you actually don't use in day-to-day basis

@scohe001 I know you can have some too? In French, I could call you a "garçon" (boy), so now you have a goatee too :p

Ooh score! irl I have quite a bit more than a goatee tho :p

8:27 PM
@CaldeiraG haha phew. I guess it probably looks worse because English just adds extra words for all the fancy tenses and those are built-in to your verbs? like we'd say "I would have been doing" and you would .. pick one from the list?

oh snap :o

@EmC I can't speak for Portuguese, but in French I would just say "j'aurais" instead of "I would have been doing"

in portuguese just use the conditional "Condicional"

8:31 PM
@CaldeiraG French one is longer (should I be sad or happy?) la-conjugaison.nouvelobs.com/du/verbe/faire.php

@scohe001 hahah the paragraph about Chinese is great

@bruglesco I love your comment <3

"That is of course nonsense."

Thank you =]

(still reading the ELU post, that was not a reply to anything else :P)

8:32 PM
@Ælis because French has even more like past conditional which portuguese doesn't have and some more things :p

@EmC LOL that alone makes it one of my favorite ELU answers

@EmC lol I didn't think you were refering to me

@scohe001 ...*sneakily fixes the acronym*

@CaldeiraG So French is awsome... or terrible... (but, when talking about non-French people, I'm supposed to praise French, so let's go with awsome :p )

I saw nothing :p
(I mix them up all the time too)

8:35 PM
@Tinkeringbell I'd be the only engineer for one thing

@Rainbacon so what I'm hearing is that you can say things from here verbatim and no one can tell you you're wrong...

@Ælis i couldn't learn French when i was at school, i know something from a friend that moved there but I don't speak with them anymore so my french is gone :p
gender neutral pronoums yay, it's gonna take a while until i do it naturally though

"They're inside the program, use the backup MAC sensor to transmit their port!"
"Calculating the transistor won't do anything, we need to parse the 1080p DHCP form factor!"

"They're inside the alarm, use the mobile IP hard drive to compress their malware!"
mobile IP hard drive lmao

Oh dear, I could do that all day x) (but I still enjoy cat picture more though :p )

So much cuteness!

@scohe001 x)

Also <sarcasm>I just learned that the FAQ post about the new CoC was downvoted for 854 different reasons! They definitively should have made it shorter, it would have been harder to come up with those reasons (which would have mean fewer downvotes)...</sarcasm>

hahahaha

8:49 PM

@bruglesco Sending you more cat love, I think we both (all?) need it:

@Ælis I think we all do too

@EmC I'm thinking of getting two when I get my apartment :D

Good thing I like rabbits, I would be terrified otherwise :p

@Tinkeringbell I'm imagining you sitting in your backyard with a beer, watching your rabbit jump around. You'd be enjoying two types of hops at once :p
