12:31 AM
Silence here

@Avantgarde that's normal, especially on the weekends :)

Yeah I can imagine

user15026
@Mithrandir you're welcome, for whatever it is :)

12:59 AM
Just got back from my little brother's birthday party. boy. tooo many kids.

@ElizB How old is your brother?

@EmC 10, today.
I can't believe he's double digits already... He had 7 friends over

@ElizB aw, happy birthday to him :)
but yeah, I'm not keen on kids that age either haha

He had a good time. He got a little bratty in the middle but mom took care of that fast. :P
He wanted to open his gifts RIGHT NOW but mom said no. He said "you're mean!"

lol

1:06 AM
then he continued that when mom didnt give in and she told him to go to a different room, and he sulked out a few minutes later and apologized
He was fine after :P
kids. hah.

haha. I have a journal somewhere that I kept briefly when I was that age.. ahh the drama

being the oldest of 4 kids I get it. I'm totally learning from mom and using her discipline knowledge and right now all I have to do is glare at them and they scamper
yeah i recall it too. the drama while my parents were divorcing was absolute hell... I didnt keep too many entries then

@ElizB nice! older sister power

(divorced when i was 16)
@EmC Yeah, seriously... I really enjoy wielding that power :P

@ElizB oh :( I was being facetious, I didn't have any serious drama.. it was all like "OMG so-and-so wanted to take the top bunk bed at the sleepover but that was SO UNFAIR"
or my younger brothers being annoying. I maintain that was still mostly legit though :P

1:12 AM
@EmC Yeah, seriously. Being the oldest still made it so I got the perks but all the expectations....

@ElizB yeahh. I'm a middle child but only a year younger than my sister, so we ended up hitting a lot of the same things since the brothers are further out

I didn't get "hitting a lot of the same things"? I'm trying to decide whether to take it literally or not lol
@EmC Me and my 16 year old sister really have a close relationship. Me and my 21 year old sister are polar opposites. Never got along. I told her that for our sakes it was probably best she not be part of the bridal party at my wedding... She agreed :P

@ElizB oh lol! metaphorical :P I guess I meant, hitting a lot of the same milestones / walls

@EmC Ah, that's what I thought. I'm pretty tired :P
7 kids plus 3 teenagers... (my sister had two of her friends over as well)

@ElizB well.. at least you agreed.. :P I think I've mentioned in here about my sister but suffice to say I ended up not attending her wedding, despite her attempt at making an ultimatum

1:26 AM
@EmC I either haven't seen or don't remember it being mentioned... Oh, geez. That's not the best for the relationship, hmm.

@ElizB eh, it was a while ago

@EmC Yeah, time goes by. Any improvement in the relationship or no?

@ElizB nope, haven't heard from her since January
probably better that way tbh. that was before her wedding - I just got an invite in the mail one day, after not hearing from her for months
holidays this year are going to suck probably but I'm trying not to worry about that yet. otherwise it's fine

@EmC Aww. :/ I know you may feel indifferent about it because the relationship was like that, but I get that it may be a soft spot. My dad and I are basically "Low Contact" because he's narcissistic and I can't stand it
@EmC Ah, yeah I can imagine. :P Probably gonna be a bit awkward for me as well because my hubby basically said he simply does not want to go. Too much chaos going on for an introvert.

@ElizB I see - hopefully they understand!

1:36 AM
Alrighty, gonna play AoM (Age of Mythology) again then bed... Have a presentation tomorrow afternoon that marks the end of my internship! :D
@EmC Yeah, I hope so too. Thanksgiving especially.

@ElizB woo :D hope it goes well!

@EmC Should be easy peasy. 15 minutes. :P

@ElizB psh yeah, you got this :)

@EmC Thanks! Alright, have a good night :)

@ElizB you too :)

morning

A J
morning
didn't you see in a while?

Mornin'

A J
how you've been?

I was on vacation
and then on a seminar

A J
oh

6:36 AM
it's Restaurant Week :)
eat at any place for just $30 :)

I never thought GDPR stuff could be so dry
You don't quite appreciate how dry it can be unless you've been lectured for 8x2 hours by a lawyer on intricacies of what constitutes personal data

I wish the gdpr protects our info that's meant to be private but is made public by those nasty websites like mylife.com or fastpeoplesearch.com
my name, address, phone number, age, previous home addresses are all online, on those websites
it's disgusting of them to do that

Bonus points to the websites that charge a "processing fee" and "privacy protection subscription" to take your information off that.

exactly ...

A J
so, never put anything online
that's the way to hide your information/
I think, in USA or some countries, everything like addresses, phone numbers, identity proofs, criminal records etc are digitally stored?

6:50 AM
@AJ so, I would have to delete my Facebook account?

A J
How long you've been there?

(I already don't post on Twitter. I have zero Twitter posts.)

Facebook doesn't really delete accounts
your information will continue to be sold to vendors and third parties in any case.

ah, fascinating

A J
once you've posted something on facebook, it will never go.
no matter what you do.

6:52 AM
I think they're already being sued in a class action lawsuit for violating gdpr, too.

interesting

A J
@Magisch yup, a lot of companies did.

Hi there! :)

A J
Hello!

hey

Morning!

@AJ I think in Europe (at least in France) you can ask Facebook to give you all the data they have about you, then ask them to delete it. It requires that you delete your account though, of course.
Wow! It's crowded in here today :D
How are you all?

@avazula Awkwardly silent XD Meh. First day of work after a vacation, so I'm reading up on e-mails, resetting passwords that expired, and feeling down :P

7:25 AM
@avazula pretty sure they give you nowhere near all the data they have on you
@Tinkeringbell hehe same
I was away on vacation / seminar since wednesday 2 weeks ago, so haven't been in the office for 11 days

@Tinkeringbell @Magisch huh :( hopefully one day in here will cheer you up :D
@Magisch It's likely, yeah, haha
But they are required to do so

@avazula It can't get much worse now, can it? :P

@Tinkeringbell you're tempting fate now

@Tinkeringbell Wait for the rainfalls and you'll see haha

your area could have another week of 33°+ coming, like mine

@Magisch It's definitly that humid kind of hot in here.
But I don't think it's at 30 degrees yet.
They're predicting a height of 26 on Wednesday for this week :)
@avazula It might rain here. I don't care for rain ;)
I'm just glad I survived my birthday, and that everyone is back at work now. I'm also even more determined to lower my standards and buy an apartment soon.
In the meanwhile I'm dealing with about three managers now that are all bickering about how I booked my hours :P
Oh, and I'm going to buy stuff now :D

@Tinkeringbell what do you mean? You don't like birthdays?

@avazula Not really no. More the stuff leading up to it, like the traditional fight over cake flavor and how much cake we need and that I didn't invite people and how that's really bad :/

uh, okay. Sounds fair. :/
I'm glad I was born a week before Christmas. We never celebrate it xD

I agree 100% with this answer because I have been in the situation of having to ask somebody to use their phone and I can tell you it is just as awkward on the other side of that conversation. We went with the speak on speakerphone and never actually touch the other guy's phone and I was very grateful cause I really needed to make that call. — Ontamu 1 min ago

7:42 AM
@avazula I can usually avoid a lot of hassle by planning my vacations so that they overlap the birthday ;)

@IPSCommentBot tp

Marked this comment as caught correctly (tp). Currently marked 1tps/0fps

But this year I stayed home, and it was on Sunday so... not much chance of avoiding it ;)

@Tinkeringbell That's smart :)

@Tinkeringbell can we swap?
31 today 32 tomorrow 31 wednesday 33 thursday 32 friday

7:46 AM
@Magisch Sure. Come over here, and you can do my job for a few days. You'll have a load of meetings tomorrow (and a new sprint starts) so you'll be stuck for three weeks if you do :P Oh, and you have to fit in moderating IPS somewhere XD

@Tinkeringbell Sure, you'll be in an unclimatised office filling in as sysadmin and help desk and also continue developing an ERP app

@Magisch Do I get an IDE?

no, you'll have to work with notepad

Okay, notepad ++?

nope

7:49 AM
or regular windows notepad? :P

@Tinkeringbell you get notepad ++

@Tinkeringbell chills

but the erp basis software is proprietary with no documentation so you'll read php models to find the functions

@Magisch Doesn't matter, I get notepad++. You get emacs :P

version control is manually comitting files to a folder using tortoise svn

7:50 AM
you get vim :D

@Cashbee vi

ups

JAD
@Tinkeringbell worse. MS Word

@Magisch Oh.... I can do that! I did that for three weeks before the current project switched to GitLab :) So you get tortoiseGit ;)
Most wasteful effort ever, learning svn for three weeks :P

heh
also you get to build this on a live database backend which consists of 89 tables of non normaised legacy data massing about 1TB by now

7:54 AM
@JAD Aaaack!

@Tinkeringbell Is this even possible?

JAD
@Tinkeringbell With only one font installed. Comis Sans
And Dutch autocorrect permanently enabled

@JAD wingdings

JAD
eh, that is reaching a point where it's actually not possible anymore, instead of just a massive massive PITA

I'd like to work with agile sometimes

8:02 AM
@JAD I can actually stand Comic Sans :)

I generally dont get the hate for comic sans. It's unprofessional yes but not an eyesore

JAD
@Tinkeringbell it's not terrible. But anything non-monospace is D:

@avazula Writing code in word? Sure. I don't know if or how you'd get it to compile though XD

my dad uses comic sans for his informal emails >.<

JAD
@Tinkeringbell Through our homebrew Genious Word Compiler (AKA a huge VBA script)

8:05 AM
@Cashbee I use whatever the program picks. Which means quite regularly my e-mails consist of two fonts because I copy-pasted something XD

@Cashbee my dad used comic sans to format sql code once
I found it hilarious

haha
your dad does sql? nice

technically doesn't
he's an accountant for a big credit insurance company
they have a tool where they can query their DB directly to compile reports, so i've been teaching him sql so he can use it
I should have become an accountant. The money they make is unreal

@Cashbee I use comic sans for all my emails.

@Mithrandir you're like 16, you don't count yet :p

8:11 AM
@Magisch It's never too late to switch ;)

@Magisch I even emailed the person who I'm currently doing a job for in blue comic sans :D

@Mithrandir That's because you already have the job haha

Nah, the original email I sent asking about it was formatted the same way
I have Gmail set to automatically do that for all my emails
Comic sans deserves some more respect.

new idea: answer gdpr inquiries with comic sans to deter followup questions
Has the new user indicator been rolled out already?

@Magisch Not that I know of :)
Facebook has them though.
For groups.

8:22 AM
glad I'm not a new user in this climate
like having a target painted on your back...

(I'm just now reading up on all the feedback and stuff. I've been out of some loops during vacation ;) )

JAD
@Magisch hmm?

Q: Come Take a Look at our New Contributor Indicator!

Tim PostWe've been doing quite a bit of research into ways that we could help new users have better experiences that ultimately lead them to becoming increasingly valuable, long-term contributors to our sites. While this is still ongoing, it's starting to blossom in the form of small but hopefully very e...

JAD
ah
for the happy happy protection

I don't know what to think of this one yet ;) I agree with a lot of points made in the first answer, but at the same time there are people running around SE acting like everyone should know everything, that may benefit from a reminder that well, people can be new.

8:28 AM
pessimistic me thinks it's going to backfire hard

@Tinkeringbell I just read the thread. IMO it's not gonna change anything for users who already don't tiptoe with low-rep users

I wouldn't want to be a user with that mark in the c tag on SO for instance

That's kind of my opinion too

@avazula I don't know... I guess I'll just wait and see ;)
@JourneymanGeek Hey, good morning! :)

@Tinkeringbell I hope it will, though :)

8:31 AM
@Magisch I am not on SO that much ;) But I guess the c tag is hard on new users? Also, I don't get the impression this is going tag based ;)

@avazula looking at the vocal (hopefully) minority of folks who've gone full "Its september" ...

@Tinkeringbell The c tag is notoriously elitist

You need one user to go off on a newbie to ruin their experience here

Well, at least it's been my experience

@Magisch C is ... hard...

A: Come Take a Look at our New Contributor Indicator!

BJ MyersI'm on board with the idea of reminding people to be considerate to those who are new to the site, but I think there's a piece missing. The new UI element encourages established users to help the new user understand site norms, but I don't see where the system tries to help the new users underst...

If you post in the c tag you're going to be scrutinized hard and often

JAD
seems to hit the nail on the head

It's not something for the easily discouraged

Morning all :)

@Magisch I backup that. It may be because it's one of the oldest languages in modern informatics, so people assume there's lot of easily-found info on the net

8:33 AM
I don't really post there anymore, because I don't like the sinking feeling of dread I get whenever I get a notification after having posted a C answer

@Magisch :(

@Magisch The only answers I post in C++ are related to deep learning haha

I erm, don't code at all ;)

Because 99% of the DL community use Python so I now I won't be criticized too hard xD
@JourneymanGeek I seriously consider reconverting in networks and SDNs

that's actually a little fun
and eventually the next crazy ass thing I want to play with

8:36 AM
in a weird way, this is a gift to the people who don't like new users
now it'll be easier then ever to downvote and close their questions without reading them or doing any further looking

JAD
@Magisch time for a userscript

Thanks a lot, this is great. Now we can vote newbie questions down without even reading them. — Teemu 2 hours ago
this may be a joke but the sentiment behind it sure isn't

JAD
@Magisch tbh, as the first answer points out, you could already do that based on rep
funny thing is that that is a self-fulfilling prophecy
low rep -> must be noob -> downvote -> lower rep -> repeat

@JAD can't go under 1

@JourneymanGeek Fortunately! xD

JAD
8:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek True, but somewhere I doubt some people's views change all that much when a user is sitting at 2 rep.

@avazula well, I'm enough of an experienced user that I don't care about reputation any more
I've seen 100k+ users "not get it" and I've seen new users post fantastic stuff out of nowhere.

@JourneymanGeek I get your point. I'd miss mod tools though.

There was some guy on SO who earned 15k rep in less then a month
by snagging a lot of bounties

@avazula oh in terms of myself, sure
but even that is a trend
But, I just focus on posting and let the reputation handle itself
(and editing, and such, but that's cause I like having a nice site)

@JourneymanGeek I'm rather focusing on helping (new) users easily post Q&A which is why I don't post often myself. I'd get sad if I get DVed, of course, especially if there's no explanation why, but I always do it because I think I can teach something to others

8:51 AM
@avazula well on SU, I try. On MSE... ehhh. I'm still playing for a high score ;)

@JourneymanGeek I think those have two very distinct purposes :)

@avazula there's nothing fun between 100k to 250k ;)

JAD
what's at 250k? More goodies?

So I hear

JAD
:O

8:56 AM
though my next milestone is 100k on MSE I think

Journeyman points hunter

@Magisch and as far as MSE goes, It also helps folks lol

JAD
@JourneymanGeek still got a long way to go though :o

I've had days when I've lost 100+ rep to deleted answers... and I was "ehhhh"
@JAD 2-3 years I guess?
Probably faster than I did SU

JAD
@JourneymanGeek I guess these kind of announcements are rather easy ways to get loads of rep

8:59 AM
lol
I think you mean announcement posts?

JAD
yeha

I don't answer unless I have something to say lol
I actually prefer to "grind"

JAD
fair enough

I like those posts cause as a regular user - they're my main/only way to really influence the direction of the network

JAD
less preaching to the choir, more helping specific people?

9:01 AM
Is also the most effective way to get staff to read what you say
Haranguing them in chat usually doesnt work

@JAD yup
My view of meta is its a hybrid blog, helpdesk and survival guide.

most of my answers on mSO are explaining basic concepts to people who asked
Not terribly useful as longstanding Q/A but it helped someone, sometimes
I'm less stringent about that on meta, personally

Well, MSU is more like a helpdesk in our case ;p
(but we also use chat)

Q: How to stop my friend's insane phone addiction

Nfagie YansanehSo, lets name our main character Josh. Josh is a close friend of mine in highschool, me and Josh are both 14. Problem is Josh is very addicted to his phone. At first, Josh would use his phone after class a lot (that makes sense, its spare time); but then Josh starts to use his phone in class (kin...

@avazula Meh... I'd leave it... what is unkind?

This part sounds judgmental: "you're looking to vent your frustration rather than improve your situation"
How does they know they don't want to improve their situation?
@Tink Don't mind my asking too much, you probably know I'm way too sensitive :)

@avazula Hmmm... I think the second sentence makes it okay for me ;) 'While we can sympathize, we can't really formulate a good answer unless you clearly explain the problem'.... It points out what is wrong and gives a solution to it..
Also, it says 'it reads as'. Not that it is. That's a nice nuance ;)
(Not saying everyone gets away with everything just because they do write down their nastiness like that :P )

Mmh. Okay.

I can understand though that it might not be the best possible way to ask 'what's your problem actually' ;)

10:10 AM
@Tinkeringbell This, and the pattern matching behavior. I've found a handful of them (from different users) these last days. I'd be sad if it becomes a trend.

@avazula Hmmm. on second thought, I got rid of that comment. It has an answer, it kinda served it's purpose ;) Now it's up to the community to point out that one of those 'whether or not I should' isn't a good question ;)

@Tinkeringbell Gotcha :)

10:29 AM
Okay. Lunchtime. Brb :P

hey @avazula :)

1 hour later…
11:32 AM
dutchnews.nl/news/2018/08/… ... He just had to give up, after about 160 km :(

@Tinkeringbell that's really impressive though. i'm glad he pulled out rather than letting worse happen.

@doppelgreener Yeah. I think he raised about 800k euros already? I find that seriously impressive too :D I hope he's okay. They said he vomited, and the doctor advised him to stop, and he's now going to the hospital for a general health check?

that's awesome
i hope he's OK

I think he'll be okay. Just general exhaustion?

@Tinkeringbell swimming 160 km presumably with little rest is really realyl straining

11:42 AM
@Magisch I think I would've quit after a single kilometer ;)

JAD
@Magisch He did have sleep breaks IIRC

@JAD i was wondering about that

@JAD even then. Imagine swimming for a whole day save for some rest to eat and sleep. You wouldn't be able to keep that up for a week or more

When I was younger, I would participate in what was called a 'swimming-four-days' (translated literally). That was 500 meters (20 laps of 25 meters in clusters of 5) every evening, for four days. I would be quite done by that time :)
@doppelgreener This night, he slept twice 15 minutes and one time 5

O_O
that's not many

11:45 AM
And another twenty minutes an hour or two ago, apparently ;)

@JalapenoNachos sorry, that was lunch time :/

JAD
@Tinkeringbell ah, we did that too. Although that wasn't a fixed distance. Just as far as possible. I think I did 1km days

@doppelgreener It's powernaps, because otherwise it can take too much effort to get started again
(all this info is what the news article tell me, not my own wisdom)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell Hmm, I thought on yday's NOS journaal they said that he slept a full night. But w/e

@Tinkeringbell sounds stressful
I do 500 once a week and that's enough swimming for me

11:47 AM
@Magisch 'I was younger' :P
@JAD Oh? Could be, I read the nu.nl report from today so that'd be from last night ;)

JAD
@Magisch well, it's an event for charity. So it's not supposed to be easy :P

@JAD The swim four days? Those weren't for charity ;)

JAD
hmm, over here they were

@JAD Oh cool. what kind of charity?

JAD
don't recall. I think KIKA
but not 100% on that one

11:49 AM
We had a thing where we would run rounds in the local stadium and people would sponsor us for "5€ per round" or something and then you'd run as many rounds as you can

That's a good one ;) I think ours was mainly to keep the revenue for the pool at a level that it could stay open :)

JAD
@Magisch well, exactly that, but hten in a swimmingpool

a group of my friends were all downplaying it hard and going on about how we didn't want to do it and all to get the teacher's / parents to pledge more money and then we tryharded the absolute hell out of it

JAD
nice

@Magisch Cool! I never did well at those, I have always been an awful runner. I loved the swimming though. maybe I should buy a bathing suit and start swimming again

JAD
11:51 AM
@Magisch btw, it should be noted that he is an olympic champion long distance swimming. 200km is still a hell of a distance, but he's had training :P
@Tinkeringbell hmm, I did that this year. Didn't manage to pull through though :/

@JAD I guess I should first look up the opening hours of the local swimming pool ;) I heard one of my moms friends rant last time that they were very limited ;)

JAD
hmm. I did it on sunday morning. ugh. I really should start doing that again

I guess my choice is walking or swimming :/
I need to at least do something to be a little more active :)

@Tinkeringbell Have you considered biking?

@avazula Too stereotypical :P I bike places a lot already, given that I don't drive a car ;)

12:00 PM
@Tinkeringbell walking is fun if yoy have somewhere to walk to ;p

@Tinkeringbell Haha, I wasn't even joking, biking is my go-to whenever I need to clear my thoughts or empty my energy
@JourneymanGeek Is Ash a good promenade companion? :)

@avazula Depends on the weather, and he's slowed down a lot

@JourneymanGeek We have this patch of heath and pine-tree forest that I could go and walk through... but I've seen that a million times already and everything is so dry and dead now there's not much joy...

@Tinkeringbell singapore has a lot of places no one knows about so it works out. ;p
Time tho, ugh

Okay... Not for the weak stomached people, but apparently your feet get really wrinkly if you swim 163 km: twitter.com/kirstenvsanten/status/1031509481350459398 :P

JAD
12:04 PM
@Tinkeringbell northern end of the Veluwe right/

poor things

@JAD Yep, almost Overijssel ;)
@JourneymanGeek Yeah. For those that are still interested: He stopped swimming because of a saline deficiency. He's getting fluids at the hospital and should soon be fully recovered :)

@Tinkeringbell good! :)

@Tinkeringbell hyponatremia, like when you drink too much?

12:08 PM
@Tinkeringbell I'm also really bad at running. I used to be able to do 2 rounds only in a row before I didn't want to anymore but for that date I forced myself into 8 much to the annoyance of the teacher that had pledged 25€ per round because she knew even if my grade depended on it I couldn't run more then 2

@avazula Yeah, or like when you exercise too much ;)

@avazula low sodium; he was sweating out salt faster than replacing it.

Question of the day: Do you sweat while swimming?

Wow. Didn't now one loses that much of salt through sweat.
@Tinkeringbell You do. Which is why it's dangerous not to drink while swimming, because you don't notice you're getting dehydrated.

@avazula I just found out too :P If you google 'do you sweat' it auto completes to 'while swimming'. So I'm not the only one that has ever asked that question! :D

12:10 PM
@Tinkeringbell Haha. The other ones were weird, though: "while sleeping (... ok ...)", "while eating (??)"

@avazula Ohhh... I once saw a co-worker eat a spicy burger with extra spicy sauce... and boy did he sweat! :D
it was dripping from his face :P

Hahaha
The thing is, I think you're constantly sweating more or less
I should check that
Huh. Turns out you only sweat when your body heats up

neat
for pursuit predation! \o/

JAD
@avazula and you also shouldn't drink while swimming. unless the water is really clean

@JAD well don't drink the water you're swimming in at least :P

12:15 PM
@JAD lol

JAD
the water where he swam wasn't clean. The authorities warned against swimming along with him (some events were planned for a short stretch) because of the waterquality
@doppelgreener I guess if you're in a clear mountain lake you might be ok, but generally... nty
@Tinkeringbell I thought you were in Overijssel. Or is it Gelderland there?

@JAD Wezep is in Gelderland ;) Just a few kilometers underneath Overijssel though. :)

JAD
figured :P

This is tangential enough that I'm not even going to consider writing it as an answer, but I have to point out that "How can I make my girlfriend...?" is major alarm-bell phrasing for me. Human beings can't really make each other do anything (not willingly), and in any sort of healthy relationship neither partner should WANT to anyway. You note that English isn't your (or her) first language, and I'll make allowances for that — maybe you really meant to ask, "What arguments can I make to convince my girlfriend...?" Words matter, and talking about "making your girlfriend" ____ is creepy. — FeRD 1 min ago
