Q: What to do if you suspect your Dad isn't your biological father

user19864Looking for some advice on this or if anyone has experience of something similar. A few years ago I was talking with my parents about blood donation and found out my blood type does not match with my Dad's. He says he is O and I am AB which would mean, if true, that he can't possibly be my Dad. ...

You really need to go to bed earlier if you're still sleepy :P

Considering when I've gone to sleep over the past couple weeks... valid.

Q: How to get to know a service staff without interrupting her work?

SuimonOn friday night I was out with some friends of mine, we often go to a hookah lounge (which are quite common here in germany, I don't really know about other countries - basically you can smoke hookahs, have some drinks and enjoy your company with your friends). There was this new service staff, ...

Q: How to tell my wife to say "please"

ThomasWe've been married for over five years now, have two little kids and our relationship is as good as can be. We both value harmony very highly and thus tend to avoid an open conflict whenever possible - and so far there was little to none reason for serious conflict, whatsoever. The "problem" is ...

@ElizB Heh! I know a guy who get Happy Monday. :P

12:31 PM
Haha yeah

A J
@ElizB You know why? Because he works 4 days a week and gets off from Saturday to Monday.

12:58 PM
@AJ ahhhh that would explain it.

1:54 PM
@Tinkeringbell True, that. My sister is basically a semi-survivor of that, because my dad attempts to use her to incite jealousy in my mom, but my mom being herself, she does not feel the need to be jealous, she knows my sister loves her no matter what, and does not feel the need to hold my sister in a vice grip like my dad does... :P

I'll take a few minutes soon to edit that answer to take away any doubt the kids are currency in this case..

ahhhhhh I have a LARP this weekend and I'm not reeeeeeady
how's that? xD

I think, since it's very close to 5PM, I actually will get called down to dinner in a minute or two ;)
@TheTinyMan off-topic? :P

Still working on those incantations/spells?

3:00 PM
@ElizB Yep :-)
@Tinkeringbell Nah, LARP is a super interpersonal activity!

@Tinkeringbell 11am at work here. Falling asleep.

@ElizB By which I mean "I've spent maybe 10 minutes studying them so far so naturally I haven't gotten anything done." xD

@TheTinyMan I could say the same thing about the powerpoint and 8-10 page paper i'm supposed to do by mid-august......

@ElizB That's true. LARP is also fun! ;-)

@TheTinyMan It does sound fun! my hubby LARPed while he was in high school with his best friend, made weapons out of PVC, foam, and duct tape. Pretty cool stuff :) He taught me how to kick my sisters ass :P

3:03 PM
@ElizB That's good, has that skill served you well? xD

@TheTinyMan Haha true ;)

@TheTinyMan Of course, without killing or harming her. No hurt feelings, I hope ;)

Well, if anyone is bored and wants a Sandbox, y'all probably should go pay some attention to this: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/3126/…

@Mithrandir there, the chat room woke up thanks to you :D
@TheTinyMan While you study those incantations, I've been finding out that my dad may have Narcissist personality disorder, and am debating how to tell him so that he can be evaluated so that he can be helped, and that there might be hope for him and his relationships....

3:09 PM
@ElizB Good luck with that conversation, it sounds like it has the potential to go south, fast! :-\

@TheTinyMan Yup, my dad is in flat out denial.... so hence my debating. Will talk with counselor tomorrow about it.

@ElizB My fingers are crossed for you.

i've already told my mom who is thankfully NOT a narcissist, and she said she validates my observations, but cannot make a definitive diagnosis, and still wants me to at least try to have a relationship with my dad, and i told her to think about this- A Relationship with a narcissist person is usually not healthy for the non-narcissist, e.g. the children or the partner involved.
One sibling already doesn't talk to him at all these days.

3:43 PM
@TheTinyMan Thanks, I feel like me and my 16 year old have had enough with my dad's attempts to manipulate and demean us, even though he says he isn't intentionally doing that. hard to nab a denier :p

@ElizB Yeah...IMO your top priority should be to keep your child, and yourself, safe. :-\ Not to maintain a relationship just because of the family you were born to.

@TheTinyMan o.O ooops i meant my 16 year old sister haha
I'm not that old haha

Hello :)

@ElizB I was wondering, but my mom was...young...when she had my eldest brother. xD I thought you were, like, early thirties.
@DonThermidor_LobsterMobster Heya!

3:51 PM
@TheTinyMan I am 5 years younger than 30 :)

@ElizB Aha! I was off by a bit it seems! :-)

so somewhat close to your guess? :)
yeah haha no worries. I phrased it in a way that seemed it was indeed my daughter haha

@ElizB Ehhh, I don't think that was that close. I'll take the miss. ;-)

@ElizB heh

@TheTinyMan Fair enough :) No harm done.

3:54 PM
@ElizB ^.^

@TheTinyMan Spent any more time on those LARP spells? I hate to sound like a naggy person but just wondering :)

@ElizB I'm working right now! :-P
Also I meant to bring my cheat sheet to work, mostly for the drive, but grabbed the wrong paper instead :'(

@TheTinyMan Aww, yeah. Same here. Having writer's block and a sleepy brain now.

@ElizB I'm pretty sleepy, myself, I definitely get the feeling there

PSA: Do not try gapping unless you are confident in your ability to get both you and the bike over the gap.

3:58 PM
@TheTinyMan Maybe food will help... Lunch time :)
@Mithrandir (winces) I hope you're alright?

After a few minutes, yes :P
I thought I could, but...

@Mithrandir I understand, yeah. I'm glad that turned out okay for you. I've had my share of nasty spills from my bike. Haven't ridden a bike in a while, come to think of it.

It's worse when you're clipped in and take a spill, because then you go down with the bike.

I don't actually know how to ride a bike

...as in, at all, or...?

4:04 PM
Although I almost had it down a few years ago when someone lent me his bike for him to practice on, but I wound up damaging it :-p
As in, if you put me on a bike, I could maybe move ten or fifteen feet before falling

@TheTinyMan my little brother is the same way, even with training wheels. he has some PT delays, and prefers to use other methods of transportation, which is fine with us and we support him in that :)

@ElizB Yeah. I don't honestly remember much of why I never learned as a kid. I think I was just afraid of getting hurt. :-P
And as an adult, it just seems like an awful mode of transportation

@TheTinyMan Where I live, there's no easy location to bike so I have no motivation to bike most anywhere

I get around pretty much exclusively via my bike, but then again, I never go anywhere.

@ElizB Yeah, I'm not...sure where I'd go, anywhere I've ever lived. Except maybe to pick up fast food? But if I'm going to the grocery, a bike can't carry enough cargo, and if I'm going anywhere, I need to cover too much distance.

4:13 PM
@TheTinyMan I used to live near a trail that used to be a railroad track path, and it was paved over, and people could safely walk and bike on it... but now I live in a different town, nowhere near that "rail trail"

@ElizB That makes sense

@TheTinyMan There's only busy roads and minimal sidewalks where I am... most things are within walking distance too, so that beats taking the risk to bike and possibly get hit by a careless driver

There are like a dozen biking trails around my town... I'm lucky :D

@Mithrandir That's cool, definitely something to take advantage of!

Indeed! I'm also taking a mountain biking course and learning trials stuff in my spare time.

4:18 PM
@Mithrandir Wow, that's intense biking. My dad happens to do that stuff, it fits his "adrenaline junkie" type of passion, and he still (laughs) insists on my trying it out, and I gently say no every time....

It's certainly not for everyone.

@Mithrandir Wow, that's intense biking. My dad happens to do that stuff, it fits his "adrenaline junkie" type of passion, and he still (laughs) insists on my trying it out, and I gently say no every time....

I still sometimes kinda go "oh god what am I doing"

@Mithrandir I don't doubt that. I get that feeling at the top of the hill when riding a rollercoaster :P

4:23 PM
Very cool! My thing is rock climbing :)

niiiice
Do you have a local place to do that?

@ElizB That sounds like so much fun, I've always wanted to do it! Pretty sure I'm above the weight limit anywhere that would teach me, and I'm also pretty sure that I'm not strong enough to do it.

@Mithrandir Yeah, about 15 minutes drive from where I am. it's the best one in the county, so people come from all over

Oh, wow.

@TheTinyMan Nonsense, anyone can start anytime. i see the challenges of being heavier than others who climb, but if you are a problem-solver, you can at the very least traverse. that's going sideways on the wall, building endurance and strength. I didnt get to where I am at overnight...

4:57 PM
@Secespitus I'm drafting a Sandbox post on our Meta to kick it off. Will it be alright if I pull the majority of it from the WorldBuilding post? Or should I rewrite it ground up? I don't want to look like I'm stealing all the hard work that went into the post, but I definitely couldn't come up with something that perfect on the first try!

@ElizB That's fair. :-) I still haven't found sites that offer training whose equipment supports people above 300 lbs, much less 400.

@TheTinyMan Gotcha, i'm sure there's something. Maybe starting with some strength training, like pushups or situps, that can help with going into a gym and getting started. At my gym, there's a small gym with strength training items like a stationary bike, weights, yoga mats, pull up bars, etc

@scohe001 Sure! I am not sure you need all the guidelines at first. It can be a little much at times, and you guys might want to revisit the comments later for example to review what was good and what was not-so-good. But if you want you can of course just copy it. It was a community effort over on WorldBuilding that evolved over a couple of years and needed a few changes when participation fluctuated.
Good luck with the project!

@TheTinyMan the majority of it is rock climbing, then upstairs that mini training gym is there

@Secespitus Thank you! I'll be using it as a base, but making small modifications as I go
Also, how did you guys work out getting the Sandbox answers posted directly into chat?

5:03 PM
It'll be interesting to see how it works for you guys.
@scohe001 There's some feed, but I don't know how it works exactly. Similar to the meta-feed (introverted meta man in this chat or something like that?), but you could ask Monica. I think she knows how this stuff works.

@Secespitus Hmm I'll have to look into that once we start getting posts
Thanks for the help!

No problem, if you have any question about how the Sandbox is currently used on WorldBuilding feel free to ping me.

Sounds good, thanks! :)

@scohe001 Apparently the feed for the Sandbox looks like this: https://worldbuilding.meta.stackexchange.com/feeds/question/6168 So basically you navigate to the question post, then add "feeds/" before the question part in the URL, change "questions" to "question", remove the question name and you are good to go.

@scohe001 let me know once you have the post up and running, I'd like to try and set up the feed :)

5:12 PM
@Tinkeringbell That would be awesome, thanks Tink! I was actually going to bug you to see if I could get the featured mod tag on it for a week or two as well. I'll ping you once it's up :)

In the mean time: Excercise for everyone in the room: I'd like a name for that feed :)
Creative is okay, but it must also be clear that it's the sandbox feed!

@Tinkeringbell Ours is called "Feed 4026" :D

@Secespitus unless 4026 is a reference to something, I'm now disappointed in the level of creativity on Worldbuilding ;)

I think it just lost its name with the last Sandbox reset and since then nobody bothered to come up with a name :D

@Tinkeringbell I was thinking "Playful Sandbox Man." Would need to find a good picture of someone being "playful" in a suit though :P

5:16 PM
Matches the other two :P

@Tinkeringbell Ha! I think introverted isn't iron man though, right? So no reason to stick to him
@Tinkeringbell I can't access this page where I am now
I was thinking something like this

@scohe001 Huh... just looked at the larger picture, you're right. Always thought they were the same :P
@scohe001 Sure, but we'd need to get rid of the watermark :P

Yea definitely not that exact pic...just the idea :P

First focus on that post :) We can get the name/picture right later :) It's just play ;)

Haha exactly, I'm popping in here to respond real quick but most of my attention is on getting everything setup. Chances are someone will come up with something more witty anyways :P

@scohe001 Accepted answers don't stick to the top if they are from the same person that asked the question. It would probably be better if someone else posted the community wiki answer so that it doesn't get "lost".

@Secespitus Ahh I wasn't aware of that quagmire
Could you post a copy of what I posted then and I'll delete mine then?

@scohe001 Sure, just posted the copy

Hello world.

Hi Sid :)

Sid
Oh, IPS has a sandbox now. Good.

How long do y'all think it'd take before the feed picks up on it?

Sid
The way things are going, I might have to ask IPS questions soon. XD

6:02 PM
I think I'm safe enough with posting directly on main though XD
I have another one lined up for soon..

I'm half and half about this. I agree that some people need to be tricked into thinking that something is their idea to be willing to go along with it, but not everyone is like that and I'm not sure the OP's wife is one of those people. — Pharap 16 secs ago

@Tinkeringbell When I posted in the WorldBuilding sandbox it took 10-15 min to show up in their chat

I'll give it another hour ;)
Our meta feed is known to be slow ;)

Poor Introverted Meta Man...he has to work up the energy to deal with us :P

6:08 PM
yes, it indeed is slow... :P

I think I made a little mistake. Restest!

@Tinkeringbell I think you need the feed link, not a link directly to the question
Check the link I posted up here

Thanks!
(I'm horrible at this, apparently! XD)

Haha it happens
I flubbed it too by posting the community answer myself apparently :P
There's really no way to perma-delete so even the high-rep users can't see it?

6:12 PM
Nope ;)
Ah well, hopefully it soon fills up with a few answers (questions), and it won't be as noticeably :)

Haha true. Especially when it's sorted by active these should all be sitting at the bottom, unnoticed

I could delete it as r/a, that way people will have to actually click the link before they can see an answer :P

Haha hide your mistakes? :P I think it’ll be fine though. The target audience here is low-rep users anyways so it shouldn’t be a problem

@scohe001 It can become a problem for high-reps trying to help though. The 2017-2018 Sandbox on WB had around 200 deleted answers, lots with long comment chains. This lead to considerably longer loading times for high-reps.
(In the order of a couple seconds, but still definitely noticable.)

Damn, that's crazy. I was wondering why you have kept opening new ones.
I think 3 deleted answers won't make too much of a difference though :)

6:22 PM
Well, we are at the third one now. And we have the new guidelines about reducing comments and try to keep the answers themselves as short as possible with only the title and a link to the posted question. This should help a lot.
3 answers are a drop in the bucket :D Once you get to 200 things will get interesting ;)

Here's to hoping the Sandbox sees enough use to get there!

Pfft... still no feed? :(

Q: Do people really care about handshakes? Is there statistics on it?

rRhetoWe're often told that a good handshake is important and makes for a strong first-impression. Personally, I don't think a handshake says anything about a person, other than the fact that they have a hand. And I can't imagine what sort of person would really put much weight into that. I mean, whet...

This seems very much like a rhetorical question, but the OP insists it is not... (tilts head)

It to me also seems a lot like it's more focused on demographics and maybe even anthropological.. yet it could be about research on an Interpersonal Skill... hmm

the main quesiton itself is not that bad at all
the who cares could be a be better but
I find it interesting

7:16 PM
Seems too broad... the entire world doesn't even use handshakes.

7:27 PM
you can include that in the answer

7:45 PM
(shrugs) did some googling and found stuff :) I'm actually thinking about looking at that research paper I found.... fascinating stuff.

8:34 PM
Hey @ElizB, I just commented on your answer and then realized the question was closed (oops!) so feel free to take or not take that advice :)

@scohe001 (shrugs) I will edit it just a little, I'm not gonna go to extreme efforts, in hopes that the OP changes the question...
I'm just a optimist... :P

Yea I don't blame you, it's pretty dang broad as it stands

yeah. Still, interesting enough for me to take a jab at it

If only it wasn't worded in a way that's so abrasive to people who may think handshakes are important...

Yeah, that seemed the issue as well. "Why should I care?!" yipes. heh
Yikes! need to go to the bus!!

8:43 PM
Just the whole "Personally, I don't think a handshake says anything about a person...And I can't imagine what sort of person would really put much weight into that...who the hell cares?"
Ahh hope you catch it!

Just finished the editing, hope that's good
yahhhh wow i totally lost track of time

Just saw it--looks good to me!

Handshakes are an important ritual with some people I know

(Pant pant... wipes sweat) speedwalking in 97 degrees 100% humidity is great fun..... made it to the bus stop. Phew.

100% humidity? At that point aren't you swimming? :P

no
thats not what 100% humidity means
it means something like water cannot evaporate
because theres too much water in the air
so it starts raining sometimes
itś also relative to the temperature as well
look it up

Haha I mean it practically feels like you're moving through water with all the moisture in the air. Not fun.

@user19312, I do agree with what you said. And it is not just in US but in other countries also. For example, I have lived in India most of my life and the last couple of years in a Latin American country where I have seen and practiced being more courteous than I used to be in India. Here it is seen as a sign of respect regardless of age, position etc. In India, however, when people are very close, such politeness is seen as too formal. I want to suggest to the OP to understand the cultural difference of the spouse to see if that helps in anyway. Understanding the root of the problem is key. — KNP 53 secs ago
