Q: Why was the etiquette question about queueing for the second time closed?

CashbeeThe question Etiquette for a person who has already queued once seems to be a good question about etiquette, and was received and understood well by the community. It is asking about the etiquette in the UK when a person has to queue for the second time. Simple as that. To me, that is as good...

Q: Do I say 'You're Welcome' to a thank you message that would normally not require an answer?

During a task that my boss performed he pointed out the the outcome was not to his pleasure and so I volunteered and fixed it. The next day my boss messaged me a simple 'Thank you for fixing pro...

@Tinkeringbell Good Afternoon.

morning :)

Oh hey, chat is waking up... sleepyheads! :D

I'm at work, in my chair, behind my computer, but I wouldn't dare go so far as to say I'm awake :D

SQB
But do you have your towel with you?
I mean, you are a hoopy frood, aren't you?

8:14 AM
I don't have my towel with me but I do know where it is
which iirc is the more important of the two

I'm at work too but calling me awake would be a stretch

@SQB It's not Towel Day :) It's AGV day. Happy GDPR everyone! :D

Got held up yesterday fixing a minecraft server so I didn't go to bed until 2am

ironic :D

@Magisch Yeah, okay. Make sure you'll get enough sleep tonight then ;)
So basically, I'm the only one here that's awake?

8:16 AM
we're all just figments of your imagination at this point

interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/14922/… is it me or does this question need quite a bit of work

@Cronax It looks to me to be more about software quality metrics than Interpersonal Skills?

it's a very double-sided question in my book
on one hand, they need a bit of lecturing on software quality metrics
on the other hand, they need IPS advice on interacting better with others when it comes to talking about their contributions

A J
@Tinkeringbell I did lunch. :P

I really love this answer, but just as a point of interest and to cover all bases, this question goes into some more detail about the use of "I feel" statements in NVC and I thought it might be useful in this context — Jesse 29 secs ago

I'd edit it to remove the 'noise' of the software development specific bits, but I'm afraid that the OP will then no longer recognize their question in it and there's some truth to the idea that a frame challenge may be in order anyway so the IPS aspect may change anyways

I wonder how he measures the number of features :o

especially since features are not made equally
one feature can be about an hour's worth of work where another might take two weaks
you can't convince anyone sane that you're somehow contributing more by writing several of the first category
and in general, who contributes more than who is a nonsensical thing to think about
when you're a team, you should be talking about the achievements of the team
perhaps an answer to that effect might work?
it'd be a frame challenge but still

Guy 1: Yeah I took about 3 months to implement this feature that let's us basically use an open source version of Word in our website.
Guy 2: Oh I implemented 20 features last week! We're now able to underline, italic, bold, use different font, use different font sizes ...

I think a comment is in order ;)

8:29 AM
@Imus exactly. Who cares about who contributed what in that case, the takeaway is that together they made the application
@Tinkeringbell To what effect though? :P

To find out exactly what they want to communicate ;)
Lemme finish my AVG training and I'll get to it ;)

fair enough XD

Reminds me of this thing I found some time ago: github.com/EnterpriseQualityCoding/FizzBuzzEnterpriseEdition

@Cronax just for completion sake, I completely agree that some part of our culture is very regressive towards certain people, be it women or Dalits (lower caste people). But, I strongly believe it's usually overblown to a great extent.

8:46 AM
@Sid I guess questions like the one I linked just trigger my prejudices, thanks for the perspective :)

SQB
I think frame challenges are problematic, actually.
On the one hand, we don't give general advice ("dear Abby") on this stack and we now even have a specific off topic close reason for that.
On the other hand, sometimes the assumptions underlying a question really should be challenged. We really should explain why asking a woman if she's pregnant is generally a bad idea.

@Cronax Hmmm... I think that question we were just discussing has 2 major problems: the metrics used (by which they think they are better) and the admittance that the remarks are often made sarcastically, which means you shouldn't take them serious to begin with, and then a question about 'how to say this in a not pretentious way' seems to me like a bit of a phrasing request or even 'make my argument for me'..
That's actually 3 problems, sorry

@Tinkeringbell I think the biggest issue is actually a 4th, the fact that the team isn't behaving like a team

@Cronax Hmm? IMO sarcastic blaming means you've got a team of great people with a sense of humour

when you're building software, you are a team building software, not a bunch of individuals. Together you're responsible for the good bits but also for the bad bits

8:51 AM
Oh sure, to the outside :P No rules on what's happening when there's no managers around :P

the fact that the OP's coworkers will blame a single person for the bad bits, no matter if it's sarcastic or no, when interacting with people outside the team, sounds like a big problem
"when other teams complain about"

@Tinkeringbell If you want to say something, but are having issues about saying it in a way that doesn't appear pretentious, isn't the logical conclusion exactly that - the thing you want to say is pretentious?

I get the impression this was happening internally ... but yeah, if they do it to the outside as well, that's a problem
What's the nice way to say 'Are you sure your work is better than that of others, before you start using these metrics as a retort?'
I think the only way this question can be answered is with a frame challenge, and it would challenge everything from the metrics used, the way the team is behaving and the way the asker should 'reply' to these remarks :/

GlinesMomeI'm a software developer, I work in a 4-people team in a R&D department. A J
@Tinkeringbell I am not sure Workplace will accept this, but it's not a good fit here for sure.

It is pretty broad, and I think giving IPS advice on how to point out their value based on the metrics given might actually be dangerous in the sense that the metrics don't show us they're definitely more efficient than their co-workers :/

9:02 AM
"I got 100 more points than you. I'm a better human being !"

I'll go drop into the Water Cooler and ask. Wish me luck

the best solution for the OP would definitely to get schooled on properly handling the metrics in the Workplace first and then come back here to get help on how to get that done properly through interpersonal interactions :D

@Cronax We're discussing it now, over at TWP chat ;)

Q: Can Etiquette Questions Be Answered Consistently with Stack Standards?

Upper_Case[Originally posted here, but moved as being too tangential to the specific question] [This is similar to this question, but I'm not describing topicality of questions so much as the ability of answers to these questions to meet the standards we enforce for non-etiquette questions] I don't disag...

Wait a minute. Ladies first does NOT apply when entering an elevator?

@Imus Of course not. Elevators are dangerous, so men go first :P

But you'll be entering both anyway
At least most of the "ladies first" etiquette rules have some (often outdated) reasoning behind them.
Like men first on a stairs, since traditionaly ladies wore skirts and going up on a stair invite looking under those skirts

Sorry, I had to go to the door to collect my packages :D ... Maybe that's where the rule for elevators comes from too then: if it was so on the stairs, people may have just extended it ;)

It's also "fun" to make up the reasoning for these kind of things like: Ladies get their food first in a restaurant because it's more important that the paying man's plate is still warm when he starts eating it.
The only reasoning for who get's to enter an elevator first is that the last one to enter is closer to the doors to exit. The woman goes last so she would feel less trapped when arriving at the correct floor
Interesting question for who goes up stairs first. If the man is wearing a kilt traditionally and the woman is wearing pants. Should the man go first?

2:05 PM
@Imus Of course, if that's the rule, than that's the rule. But etiquette can differ amongst cultures, so maybe not?

If you wear a kilt in the stairs, you are a definite trooper. Or some kind of weird guy.
gets invaded by SCOTTISHMEN

Men no longer have to enter the backseat of a cab or Uber first. (taken from mannersmentor.com/personal-polish/outdated-etiquette-rules)
Out dated etiquette said they did? :o

My initial mannerism would have suggested me to hold the car door open for the ladies.
But it seems it wasnt the case

Big skirts make scooting over difficult
So the man opened the door, than went in first and moved over so the woman doesn't have to do that difficult scooting

Ooooh

2:19 PM
Imagine how crazy that looks in modern society where the woman is also wairing pants most of the timee
One moment miss, let me open this Uber door for you. * steps in himself *

@Imus I wasn't trying to. I was kidding too :)
@Tinkeringbell I love those crafts but I'm too scared about the time needed to do such stuff

Ah well, crochet does lend itself to small stuff too, and those can be done in a day or two ;)

@Tinkeringbell Oh, I had no idea. Sounds awesome :D
I should try again

2:55 PM
@Tinkeringbell The yarn shop I go to actually has one of these on display. :D

@avazula Did you try? What did you try to make?
@Catija Mine is halfway done now... I like it, and I hate it, I can't seem to get all gaps closed :/
Then again the one on the pictures doesn't look watertight either

It seems like one of those things where you have to line it before stuffing it.

@Catija Pattern doesn't say so, it only encourages you to crochet tight enough.
I should have started with something small, like a bird, instead of a dino ;)

Well that was strange

I just started a blanket this weekend using this pattern:

2:58 PM
I clicked the box to expand the picture and it reposted the link

@Tinkeringbell I used to do crochet ... When I was 6, so it was a loooong time ago xD
@Catija That's beautiful!

Well, I didn't make that one :P
Mine will be white with only three colors, grey, mint green and pale teal.

@Catija Oh nice :D That will be soo pretty :)
I couldn't resist, and just started on my blanket a little bit too :P I'll finish the dinosaur later :D

Same colors as this one, different design... I'm essentially making a new blanket for the new bean that matches.

@Catija Those colours are great :D

3:01 PM
I did make that one, by the way. That's a ~6 day old Bennett... or so.

Then the baby looks great too! :D

the blanket or the babby? :P

HAHAHA
I made them both!

they both look adorable :D

He was remarkably cute for a newborn...

3:03 PM
@Catija Let's hope the next one will be too ;)
Because I do want to see your new blanket once it's done :)

... we can hope. With my luck, he'll be hideous. :P

@Tinkeringbell the next blanket or the next newborn? :P
stop confusing me!

@Catija Aww... I'll hope a little harder then, especially for you ;)

Thanks! I'm sure it will help. :D

How's your husband's luck? :P Will that at least balance?

3:05 PM
HAHAHA. Who knows.

Well, I've decided I don't like Stylecraft yarn :P It makes my hands feel greasy?

Hmmm... what type of fiber?

acrylic...
Never had that before with acrylics though :/

Huh. Is this the first time you've used that yarn?
Maybe it's a fluke...

@Catija This specific brand, yes...
It supposed to have a good reputation and be good, as far as acrylics go

Sid
3:08 PM
@Catija My usual position is that Babies are hideous and annoying but that one's really cute. :)

(I prefer cotton, but I had to buy the kit for the pattern + specific colorway)

Sid
And that pattern is extremely beautiful..

@Catija for an IPS chatroom, they're being remarkably impolite, don't you think? :P Or maybe they're really just confused :P

@Tinkeringbell Huh. Interesting. I'd keep trying.
@Sid Awww, thanks :D He was definitely annoying but...

@Tinkeringbell 'they'?

3:11 PM
@Cronax Other non-mod chat frequenters :P

I'm not rude, I'm a pedant, there's a difference :D

@Catija I definitely will :P Didn't spend all that money on a kit to just throw it away... If I don't like the feel of the end result, I'll gift this one to someone and buy cotton to make my own ;)

@Sid The new one or the old one? Or both? The old one (with Bennett) was a couple of different ones together inspired by a baby blanked I'd had myself. The new one I spent forever finding one I liked and actually paid for the pattern, which is unusual for me.
@Tinkeringbell Have you tried washing your hands?

also, I was genuinely confused because both your statements could have applied to both the blanket and the baby, and I thought that might be intentional

@Catija Yep. I usually do that before I start crocheting ;)
I might try it now, but if I have to wash my hands after every 50 stitches :/

Sid
3:13 PM
@Catija the colourful one. Not with Bennett.

@Sid Ah, yeah! I do really like it a lot. And it's really easy to crochet, actually.

@Catija Pirated patterns! :D

Hey, they're on Ravelry for free... so...

Do pattern pirates wear crocheted eyepatches? :D

@Cronax Sure they do! Lacey ones :P

3:16 PM
I don't have the patience for hobbies that are about creating stuff

So, no cooking (creating food), no handicrafts, no reading (creating images of what's written)... what do you do for fun? :P

I do cook, but I wouldn't call that a hobby, that's a daily necessity which I add a tiny bit of creativity to :P
but most of my time is spent on videogames :D
(remember kids, growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional!)

SQB
@Catija ehr... new bean? Congratulations?

@SQB Ah. :D Yes. Thanks. Due in October.

@Cronax Most hobbies are things that once were necessities.

@sphennings very true!
@Catija I knew it, you did mean both, congratulations on the new blanket and the new bean then :)

@Catija Jerry if it's a boy?
Or isn't that who Bennett's named for?

@Cronax OH! Is that what you were asking... haha. Yes, both a new bean and a new blanket. :D
@SQB Bennett is because we liked "Ben" but thought "Benjamin" was a bit too common, and it relates to one of my favorite books.

OMG... I had no clue that Ben from Ben & Jerry's was "Bennett"!

@SQB I am not sure Catija will want to tell her boy that his name was taken from "Vampire". :P

HAHAHA. Probably not, but we were looking for a name that starts with a D.

SQB
I once had a cow-orker who called his child-to-be "the fraggle". Living in "Fraggle rock", which in the Dutch translation was "Fraggle Cave".
And with that awful mental image, I must leave you now.

V_MonschI've recently started a new internship and my team is composed of a few people (5-10). They're all nice, including my supervisor, but he tends to avoid helping me. For example, I've asked him for help via our company chat, no reply, then when I talk to him about it half an hour later he says h...

Q: How do I prevent awkwardness between a friend and myself?

Joe-You-KnowI went on a few dates with a woman I was interested in at the time. After the fourth date, she decided we should just be friends, which I was okay with. Since then, we've hung out several times a week (3-4 times a week), which I've enjoyed. I'm no longer interested in her romantically, but I do l...

SomeoneI (21M) have been dating my girlfriend (20F) for about a year now. Q: How do I tactfully refuse to lend my pen?

Greek - Area 51 ProposalDuring my flight's descent, after seeing that I use my pen to complete customs forms, everyone on my whole row asked to borrow it. I said 'yes', to not appear unhelpful or selfish. Then one person sneezed within range of my pen, wiped the mucus with his shirt, but she did apologize. So how can ...

Q: How to respond an interview invitation and let them know that you would prefer a face to face meeting?

Q: How to reply when someone says 'It means a lot'?

eMADIn a scenario where you have encouraged someone but haven't helped them physically or with your time and they say "It means a lot". Just for the words you said. How should would one respond? Edit: Context: Someone showed good performance in sports after struggling to perform in multiple matches....

@apaul Edited version: "Don't let the bad people grind you down.”

@sphennings Perhaps a little... Overzealous? Given the context?
