@ElizB I thought her choice of imagery was quite interesting. A black costume evoking a crow at the beach during twilight vs a white costume with a ram's skull up on a mountain during the day.
Definitely some kind of duality theme there and I get a hint of Native American mythology mixed in too (the crow [and maybe the ram], plus the location).
The connection to the lyrics is non-obvious at best.

@El'endiaStarman That's what I sensed too, I was thinking overall of 'ying and yang'

Yeah, basically.

It was interesting to have me think of the connection of the lyrics and the overall imagery... what was the intention behind that? spiritual awareness? Hmm. :)

Q: Does IPS want to be back on HNQ?

JADSo as you all know, questions on Interpersonal Skills are no longer shown on the Hot Network Questions sidebar. As much as can be said about the way this came to be, it is interesting to reflect on the HNQ and what it does to the site. HNQ is a double edged sword. On one side, It brings a lot of...

Good afternoon :) (It's Belle-Sophie, my chat account is still weird)
I was wondering if you could help me phrase a nice reply to this person, as my current reply drafts are all far to hostile
You should also consider the possibility that your colleague's criticisms are well-founded. Your chosen example is particularly telling: inexperienced programmers often reach for shiny things such as linq, when old-fashioned thins like a foreach loop can be more readable and easier to maintain. If you display an attitude of thinking that is his preference is based on not being able to manage linq, you will find yourself on a slippery slope. — Dominic Cronin 58 mins ago

@Cyonis Your parent site is set to Workplace, where you have a different username. If you set it to a site where your username is "Belle-Sophie", it should change (once the chat system clears its user profile cache).

Whatever I can think of, does not pass the "be nice" policy

(If you did that and it still hasn't changed after a few hours, contact SE and ask them to refresh your profile manually.)

@gparyani That's not exactly the case. This is an entirely different account. A CM is looking into it already.

@Cyonis Hey there :) It's weird to see you with the "wrong" color :P

12:50 PM
@Cyonis Really? (Your parent site is Workplace, but that seems linked to your IPS account, which has the other username.)
@Cyonis I was wondering if I could see some of those drafts? (Not for laughs, just to help, since I run into the same thing so often.)

My phone is logged in on one, my computer on another

@Cyonis weird how?

@Cyonis That one's parent site is linked to a deleted SO account. Did you delete your SO account recently?

headtilt
merge gone wrong?

12:54 PM
@gparyani Nope, I had my accidentally created account merged.

ah
merge gone wrong

It's likely that the system detected a deleted parent site profile and created a new chat profile, so that's why you have two chat profiles

Ya, some dev's gonna have a lot of 'fun' fixing it

It does sound like a lot of 'fun' to fix.

@Cyonis I can see why you are having trouble with how to answer that, let me think about it

12:57 PM
@Noon My boyfriend just looked over, read the comment and said "[Coworker's name] found your post, hm?"
It's not the coworker, but it does sound like something he could say

@Cyonis Also, I don't know about the comment rule on TWP but on IPS I would have voted to delete that (bad frame-challenge answer in a comment, not asking for clarification)
@Cyonis At the very least, it definitely sound like something a sexist coworker would say to a woman...
(believing that they know better than this stupid woman...)

@Cyonis Remember that you don't have to reply.
I could check, but I believe TWP also accepts nln flags on chatty comments.
or answers in comments

@Noon It does :\ I don't want to use the sexist card, but it smells a lot like it.
@Tinkeringbell Perhaps I should just ignore and flag

Perhaps. I am not familiar enough with TWP to say for sure though.

It's so difficult not to engage! It feels like a personal attack.
At least it's weekend :)

1:01 PM
@Cyonis Hey, using the sexist card anywhere online can rapidly turn very badly :/
@Cyonis Let me a bit more time, I think I have an idea to how to respond (and I will post the comment myself so you won't have to)

@Noon I've used the intimidation card with HR yesterday. That got balls rolling.

@Cyonis Not sure I understand that "That got balls rolling" correctly. Do you mean that HR took you seriously and made/will make some changes?

I was surprised. I spoke about it with a coworker a few days back. He said "report it to HR", which I did yesterday. When I got back from the talk, another coworker I'm on friendly terms with asked me to come to his office.
Some 15 developers have went to their managers together to back me up.
@Noon Yep. Didn't get dismissed with "just man up" or whatever. They really took it seriously. They asked me if I could discuss it with our manager as a first step.

@Cyonis Wow, that's great that you have such support! And I'm sorry you have to deal with something like that in the first place, I know it's not easy (my previous boss was also always doubting me, it was exhausting)

@Noon It was overwhelming, in a good way. Yesterday was the first Friday in weeks that I went home feeling good.

1:11 PM
@Cyonis That's great, I'm happy for you! I hope the situation will keep evolving in a good way :)
Also, I'm thinking of answer this to the comment:
> DominicCronin The fact that Cyonis colleague criticisms are well-founded (or not) isn't the point. The point is that the colleague is triggering anxiety attacks.

Nice!

Well, it's posted then :)

JAD
@Cyonis just flag it as NLN. it's borderlining an answer in comments, and if not it's chatty
If you can't think of a reply that's not rude, it's probably not worth replying to
3

I like Noon's reply. It says everything I would have wanted to say, without resorting to the not so nice things that went through my head.
I'm probably projecting again, which makes me unable to be nice to this random stranger on the internet
Good advice though, @JAD

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog the comment said: "Why is there no reaction at all since weeks?" not, nobody has said a word. In fact, since September 28 there has been no further reaction. So fontgeologist is quite right. Allow me to express myself in Italian, "CoC, il nuovo design, i bug, il HNQ, …insomma c'é un gran bel casino" It's like witnessing the fall of a once great empire. — Mari-Lou A 2 mins ago
Can someone please translate? I've stopped trusting machine translations.
"CoC, the new design, the bugs, the HNQ, ... so there is a great casino"...?

JAD
@gparyani Code of Conduct, the new design, the bug (?), the HNQ, ... in short, it's one big mess.
according to google translate

The above is literally what it gave me. It seems you're getting a different result.

JAD
odd
but there is a translation for casino -> mess in the dictionary

I suspect this is a phrasing request then. Have you tried googling "how to be nice in an email" or variations of this? I found plenty there pretty quickly. If this is not solved by a Google search and indeed not a phrasing request, please clarify. — Raditz_35 1 min ago

@avazula you've been getting compliments all over the network :)

6:27 PM
That's cool :)
So, i just confirmed with my sister that I'm taking her to see Phantom of the Opera in May :)

user15026
@ElizB That sounds like it will be super fun

Gonna be my third time seeing it, i'm kinda obsessed with it
but then she told me she had not seen it on stage and it was a no brainer haha
@Ash i'm waiting for the presale to end so I can call and grab tickets

@ElizB they should have Jonathan Young and Malinda Kathleen Reese do it ;)

@Mithrandir ooooh... runs and puts cochlear implants on

JAD
@ElizB ooh, reminds me of the Nightwish song :P
On a similar note, I'm seeing Cats this february

6:44 PM
@JAD I have a paricular love and hate for Cats.... my sister played it on repeat.... i know the songs too well. There's two ways I learn lyrics: 1. I intentionally listen to it with lyrics and I learn them eventually and I enjoy them. 2. I hear the song on repeat, like my sister playing it on the TV every chance she got. I helplessly succumb to unintentionally memorizing the lyrics.
It is one of Lloyd Weber's great productions, as well as Phantom, but it's kept at a distance because "jellicle songs for jellicle cats" on repeat in my head is not particularly useful or pleasant to me.... :P Nothing against the musical itself haha

Yeah, all three are good :)

JAD
@ElizB story is mostly absent, songs are great

@JAD i have only a idea of what the story is supposed to be

JAD
IIRC, 95% of the songs are character introductions to the jellicle ball. Some (yearly?) event for jellicle cats, where one cat gets to ascend and be reborn. The remaining 5% is making that choice

yeah basically.
there's a kidnapping of the big old cat by a bad guy and then the magic cat brings him back
that's the only really exciting thing that really happens

JAD
6:57 PM
which also serves as introduction to magic cat

yeah

JAD
oh, and introduction to bad guy
more or less

So. many. times. I liked the train cat

JAD
XD

that one was particularly peppy and entertaining

JAD
6:58 PM
I like trains, so I'm forced to agree
also mungojerry and rumpleteaser

oh the twin cats that were in mischief

JAD
they're a notorious couple of cats

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer

JAD
uh, forgot the rest of the lyrics
something something clowns, quick-change comedians...

JAD
7:03 PM
oh yeah, I know it's all on the tube. He used to have the DVD when I was young

user15026
I saw Cats many years ago. I don't remember a lot of it.

on a different topic, Jonathan young and Calvin Hyles's Prince of egypt cover is one of my favorites from them. Phantom of the opera is very close

Yep.

7:21 PM
In other music-related news, this is kinda amazing:

@Mithrandir yessss it is!! i saw it yesterday and i was really pleased at the drops, and the flow :D

She should sing more.

I think she is discovering that voice there... i really like the simplicity and the depth of it all
literally dancing to this now haha zero to hero jonathan young

Wait he did a cover of that? O_o
Georgia Merry did a good Hercules medley

i didn't know either i'm just browsing around
this one was really fun!

Q: How do I approach expressing boredom at my stable 9-5 job when doing so may jeopardize management's view of my performance?

Triangular ColanderBackground: I have a decent job for someone at entry level, but it is pretty monotonous. There is high turnover and very little upward mobility within the department. The pay grade is not so good for my area, even when my lifestyle is spartan. I have had to get a few part time jobs to make it...

@ElizB Hmm, just stumbled on this video: youtube.com/watch?v=qpbX7SbXOtU

@JAD I've seen that, it's great :) Thanks for sharing!

JAD
I'm assuming you know the Nightwish version?

I know it, but don't listen to it often

JAD
fair enough :P

I sang it with my bethrowed.
It was beautiful. She unadorned.

JAD
9:37 PM
it's a fun duet to sing I imagine

Which duet in the phantom of the opera?

Oh Celine!

JAD
the one between the phantom and the opera girl (IDK the name)

Oh Karouene!

Christine Daae.

9:39 PM
Right you are.

I am quite obsessed with the musical, actually.

JAD
I've watched a movie version once. The duet was fairly early there
don't recall much though

the movie version is relatively infamous from what i hear

The 2004 version? Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum?

JAD
possibly
probably
maybe
it had the nightwish version IIRC
which sounds about right for 2004

JAD
hmm, 7.3 isn't tooooo bad of a score
also, 2.5 hours. Yes. I remember it dragging on a bit

I think it was alright... they cut out a verse that was IMO very good and dramatic in the movie
in the main "phantom of the opera" song shown here from the 2004 version at 2:29, they cut out one additional verse that was in the original version shown at 2:35.
"In all your fantasies you always knew, that man and mystery (christine: were both in you) (together) And in this labrynith where night is blind... the phantom of the opera is there..." then the song continues to its climax, and that verse (in my opinion) is the best dramatic part, where the lyrics are pretty deep.
Anyway, back to Phantom... any other things anyone wanna know about it?
and the original version was sung in that video by Ramin Karimloo and Seirra Boggess, who I believe are the the most tightly connected actor/actress pair in Phantom performaces... Only gerard butler and Emmy rossum come slightly close to it

JAD
9:58 PM
@ElizB oof, being familiar with the NW version, this sounds awefully soft

@JAD soft?

JAD
@ElizB mellow, idk how to put it

@JAD Mellow? Just that one verse or the whole thing? I'm curious... i'll go listen to the nightwish again

JAD
@ElizB hmm at least, Marco Hietala (the bassist of nightwish and their male singer) really adds some madness to the phantom's part

(starts listening to it) Mmmm... I see what you mean. I think that this is more "modern" while the original and movie version are more classical
I'm definitely hearing the madness... interesting

JAD
10:01 PM
@ElizB sorta classical, but also with a bland techno-like backing track
@ElizB it's especially in the end

@JAD That techno-like backing track is what sets it apart, plus the voices

JAD
I don't know the story well enough to know if that madness is justified
but yeah, the original's vocals are much more opera-like than the 2004 version

@JAD Mmm that is a topic I like thinking about....
It's a very interesting story.

JAD
I don't know much more than what can be inferred from the lyrics tbh

being trapped in an opera house, learning all about the opera and how it works - and not knowing love can drive a man to madness
not knowing the outside world... and how the outside world treats a disfigured person...

@JAD I really, really love the story of Phantom, how at the very end he lets Christine and Raoul go, and I think that shows his humanity deep down.

JAD
damnit, now I'm on a Nightwish binge... and it's already past midnight
ok, two more songs

@ElizB I really need to see Phantom at some point

@Mithrandir No problem. I understand things happen, i've been spoken to in that way before and i brushed it off. No harm done for now, and hopefully my warning is understood.
@Ash it'll be my 3rd time seeing phantom this summer... :D

10:20 PM
@ElizB Yeah... I'm talking to him now about it.

@Mithrandir Okay

JAD
Last one, then I'm going to bed:

I just finished the video you posted... that was really good even though I didn't get any of the lyrics :P

JAD
yeah me neither lol
might be from a poem or something

oh good to know haha
i'm not the only one not paying attention to lyrics

JAD
10:24 PM
well, I know the lyrics, but even then they don't necessarily make sense
I thought that that was what you meant with I don't get them

i didnt understand them at all, they're mostly gibberish in my brain :P

JAD
:P

yeah, if i dont see the lyrics in print then i don't know what they're saying... vowels and consonants jumbled up

JAD
and you said you're from the US right?
now imagine that for a non-native speaker :P
anyways, I just found out they're touring right now, and will be in the Netherlands end of november. Seriously tempted to buy tickets :O
but not now. Sleep first :P
