8:00 AM
@sphennings I'm not saying I'm asking a lot of people out, or that people are asking me out a lot.... but I can definitely handle the drunk guy in a bar...

A lot of it comes down to context, and nuance. Unfortunately the internet kills both of those.

@sphennings True... but yeah, in general you don't ask random people out. Doesn't matter if you're male or female ;)

I don't recall ever asking out a girl in a coffee shop. Has it crossed my mind, though? Yeah, plenty of times ...

@D.Hutchinson Hah, you started this because you wanted to talk to the girl with headphones, to ask her out! :P

haha yeah ...

8:02 AM
Now you know it's a bad idea :P

Culture matters a lot. If you've grown up in a conservative community in the US, as a woman it's likely that you will have been raised to defer to authority, and avoid confrontation.

People get upset when you even mention the thought ;)

yep ...
@Tinkeringbell I genuinely didn't see what's wrong with it ...
but it's nice to have a bunch of people comment on it, though ...

@D.Hutchinson What are you having trouble understanding?

@sphennings the headphones thing, I understand now. but in general, at a coffee shop, the idea that it's a bad idea to ask a girl out ... that is surprising ...
a sober guy asking a girl out in a coffee shop ... seems ... respectful to me ...

8:05 AM
@D.Hutchinson Have you had a conversation with them?

@Tinkeringbell what are your thoughts?

@D.Hutchinson A coffee shop over there is like a starbucks right?

@Tinkeringbell yep, or another chain with a better college / study / productive vibe ...
@sphennings nope
@sphennings the most was, "can you watch my laptop so that I can go to the restroom? thanks."

I don't usually go to such places...

I see ...

8:07 AM
And I never heard of people studying or working there (or at least not here in the netherlands)... I think if I were to go there, I'm already with friends.
And I wouldn't be there to pick up a guy

@D.Hutchinson If you're talking to someone and getting along is a very different case than walking up to someone and going "You're cute. Want to go out?"

@Tinkeringbell I see ...
@sphennings I see ...

Also don't hit on waitstaff. Their income is dependent upon keeping customers happy. Don't put them in a position where they need to shoot you down.
If they're wearing headphones there is really no way to start a conversation.

@Tinkeringbell at the coffee shops near me, we have communal tables ... many are sharing a big, long table ... everyone has their notes, laptops and books out ...
we get free wifi and ... it's cozy ... nice vibe to do work ...

@D.Hutchinson Sounds like our university library. I still wouldn't hit on people there, or even start a conversation :)

8:11 AM
I see ...
so ... basically ... make plans to go to the bars?
I've been lazy ...
need to be more proactive with the bar scene, I guess ...
because ... I'm looking / daydreaming in the wrong places ...
also low on cash, too ...
@Tinkeringbell at the library, it's exceptionally hard to do, I've found ...
even with tons and tons of groups of girls ... I was maybe successful twice out of ... 20 attempts ... it's incredibly hard ...
because I don't know them ...
and don't have a real pitch to offer ... nothing to impress them with ...
it's literally, "hey, I was wondering if you wanted to go out sometime?"
the answer is almost always "no thanks"

Well. If someone you'd never met before randomly came over and asked you out, what would you think?

1/10 is incredibly high odds from what I've seen.

@Mithrandir hmm ... I've been asked out to dinner by a few girls. what did I do? took their numbers down but never texted or replied to them.

@D.Hutchinson If you have any social hobbies they can be great spots to meet people. You're also guaranteed to have at least one shared interest.
@D.Hutchinson You dropped the ball if you never followed through when someone asked you out.

it is interesting that looks don't seem to be a factor here: my female friends usually rate me "above average". it's the ... approach ... that hardly ever works ... that is my issue ...
@sphennings I see ...
so ... no coffee shops ... no libraries ...
^ places where I spend so much of my time at ... when doing work ...

8:22 AM
@D.Hutchinson It's best to not look for dates. Find people who you enjoy spending time with and ask them out.
Or use a dating site/app

I see ...
@Mithrandir further, I take their numbers down when they ask me out, because I feel that minimizes any embarrassment for them. I never say "no", when a girl has asked me out. stranger or friend, or friend of a friend ...
so it's like ... I know I'm desirable to some people; however, my own approach to meet girls ... seems very deficient ...
anyone willing to offer any feedback, based on your interactions with me?
I have some guesses: confidence issues, and being overeager ...
I've literally been told by a date during dinner, "I wish you weren't so available. Girls want what they can't have."
but I don't know how to transform into Mr. Unattainable ...

8:48 AM
@D.Hutchinson Be yourself. You wouldn't want to stick around people who do not like your true self.

@user21820 yeah ...
in all honesty, I've been told that ... umm ... by a few girls ...

@D.Hutchinson Not all girls are like that, and I think you wouldn't like such.

@D.Hutchinson I have one extremely good piece of advice that I've given to a few other people: Don't ask me for advice on things like dating

so it's like ... it's a pattern almost ...
@user21820 and, I can't transform into someone who's more "elusive"

@D.Hutchinson It could be prevalent in some (most?) cultures, but that does not mean you want the majority type.

8:50 AM
I see ...

After all, many people have an unhealthy desire for things that they do not have.

right ...

Don't ask me... I only date guys from my friend pool

@Tinkeringbell I see ...

@user21820 That's called jealousy right? not love? ;)

8:53 AM
@Tinkeringbell not jealousy - more like, chasing after the unattainable, I think he / she means ...
and not wanting what's available ...

@Tinkeringbell In the extreme coveting can turn into jealousy, yes. In any case, it's better to be content unless there's something really wrong with what one has.
People who always want things they don't have will never be content, as there is no end to not having things.

@user21820 I think we have a different definition of jealousy :) Here, people don't really differentiate between coveting and jealousy...

@Tinkeringbell Ah okay. In practice there is hardly a difference. But one could covet the moon without being jealous of anyone (since nobody owns the moon). =)
Or, more down to earth, coveting more money.

@user21820 Hmmm.. here we would think one would covet the moon because they're jealous of someone and thus want the moon so that they can feel like they're better...

Hahaha...

9:04 AM
As for coveting more money... apart from those people that don't make enough to make ends meet, wanting more money is born from a form of jealousy too :)

I was going to say something along the same lines; people don't covet the moon in general because it has nothing to do with what (they feel) they need to gain something on earth (health, wealth, physical benefits).
It's true that many people covet mostly things that they see other people possess.

This is an interesting question! interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/9768/1599
I wonder if it's usual for people with an ASD to have trouble understanding an animals body language too?

Q: How can I help my father understand our dog's needs?

BelleOur family dog is a very cheerful border collie. She's great with people, kids too, but not with other dogs. She is scared of them. We got her when she was a year old and she never learned to walk on a leash. She is currently 4 years old. I've slowly been training her to walk on a leash, but she'...

@user21820 thanks for the feedback; I will try to stay positive and not be jaded ...
@Tinkeringbell I read that, and I wonder whether them having a talk with their vet is the best solution ...

@D.Hutchinson Hmm... What's a vet supposed to do? Explain how dogs work? I think you're better of with a dog coach for that, but maybe there's no difference between the two over there?

9:12 AM
morning

hmm ... dog trainer / coach ... that's a good choice, actually ... I was thinking vet, to make the dad know it's a serious matter of health to understand the dog's emotions, too ...

@Magisch Morning!

you could post that as an answer, @Tinkeringbell

@D.Hutchinson I'd pick dog trainer, because I've noticed they train humans better than dogs :P
@D.Hutchinson I don't have an IPS solution to go with it.

haha ...
i see ...

9:17 AM
@D.Hutchinson Your comment reminds me of this video:
Oops.

about not being jaded?

About dogs having emotions too.
Sorry I didn't know the video is now unavailable.

It's of course your decision to end friendship and others have already answered how you should proceed about it. But I just want to add one thing. I feel she needs help. If possible, maybe give her once. Explain her everything about her behavior and how much uncomfortable it makes you. if she don't change, end friendship. At least this way things won't come as shock to her. She will knew she got a chance to fix herself but she didn't — VarunAgw 1 min ago

@D.Hutchinson It was a video documentary about a troop of snow monkeys, and through it you can clearly see their social interactions are very similar to humans, and many people do not realize this. Dogs too are emotional beings and actually can die of heartbreak.

@user21820 I see ...

@NVZ Sorry for causing the confusion. That was my fault. I didn't follow your link and assumed you meant my question about the IPS Comment Bot. I had already forgotten about the earlier exchange by then (I have the attention span of a humming bird).

This one is fun! Asking the really important questions: physics.stackexchange.com/questions/381828/…

How old are you? The more mature you/they are, the easier it gets to talk to people about unpleasant topics. Where do you come from? Are the messages in good spirit form someone that knows of your issues or are they not? I think how to ask people for criticism is a great question, but maybe you should work a bit. A 17 year old that is just annoyed by you and wants you to stop coming to his parties because you creep everyone out is a completely different than a couple of 30 year olds with issues of their own helping each other out — Raditz_35 34 secs ago

This bot seems a bit creepy now.

@user21820 Why?

@Mithrandir If it were a real person, it would be slightly like stalking all the users who post advice. Of course, it's just a bot. =)

9:51 AM
@user21820 Oh, stalking all users who post advice is easy :P just type in is:a in the search field and order by newest :P You'll get all new answers posted ;)
And the bot is only posting part of what it is picking up here...
It is also running in the closet chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/63296/the-closet posting all comments ever written :)

@Tinkeringbell Hahahah!
@Tinkeringbell That one I actually can't understand; why post every comment if there is no one to read them?

@user21820 I am trying to be in there for an hour each day ;)
We have a comment problem :P

@Tinkeringbell Wow okay.

And I think Mith hopes to train the bot to be something like Smokey for comments? @Mithrandir?

Q: How to break contact with a headhunter?

user12105A few months ago, I got in touch with a recruiter that was offering job positions for an industry I'm interested in. I sent my CV to her, she requested some changes to it, then more changes. In the end, I only ever got asked to change stuff on the CV and that my salary requirements were too high...

9:55 AM
@user21820 I read them.

@Mithrandir All of them? That's quite a task.

A think I manage to read about 2/3rds of them.
@Tinkeringbell Eventually. Waaaay down the line.

Q: Can we incentivize flagging, so that more people can watch after the comments sections?

D.HutchinsonI have some "helpful" flags recently but I notice that I don't earn any rep for having used my flags with good judgment, whereas I earn +2 when my edits of questions are approved. Can we incentivize flagging, so that more people can watch after the comments sections? Can we earn rep, say, +2 ...

Q: Correct Flagging Incentive

gabeioI use flagging to make stackoverflow better. I have 30+ helpful flags. It would be nice if there was a small incentive to flag bad questions so that the site gets cleaned up a little. Even if it is +1, only for helpful tags or even only for one helpful tag per day or per hour, it would be nice be...

IMO, no. It's easy enough to find things to flag; I've got thousands of helpful flags on sites where I have no rep. Reputation is supposed to be a measure of subject expertise; helpful flags don't need subject expertise.
Take my SO profile. I've got 220 rep and 1,543 helpful flags.
^anyone can steal that for an answer if they want

@AJ, you might want to take into account that you'll get privileges relating to posts when earning more rep, while everyone can flag...
So earning rep for flags doesn't make you deserve those privileges because you might not know what to do with it

Without wanting this to sound mean, why do you not interpret this as "she is bored"? Your speculate on this but your next statement is "I make reservations, I go to the gym all week before the date, I get a decent haircut, and I try to dress nicely." I don't see how any of those things would reduce the likelihood that she is in fact bored in the slightest. — tardigrade 1 min ago

the company situated underneath my apartment starts the woodsaw at 5.30 am sharp

I'm barely asleep by 5:30AM.

so sleeping on any day except sunday past 5.30 am doesn't work

2:09 PM
@Magisch Wow. Remind me to be thankful that I own my own house with some land...although I do have a neighbor that likes to start his own power saw around 10pm and keep going until 1.
Fortunately the room that I sleep in these days is pretty thoroughly soundproof

@TheTinyMan I have one that start the power saw as long as my curtains are closed... when I open them once I'm awake, he's suddenly done...
:/

I'm not exactly moaning that is the reason the apartment is comparably dirt cheap

Stupid people

It goes for more then 60% under market rate around here

@Magisch That's nice :) And maybe you can turn around and sleep?
I can do that with some noises...

2:11 PM
I don't think you understand how loud an industrial woodsaw is
thankfully they're usually done and shipped out for most of the day until the afternoon refill at 10am or so

@Tinkeringbell Wow, that's messed up

technically according to town and state ordinance they can't really do that until 8-9am anyways and definitely not on saturdays but it's part of the unwritten agreement with the tenants that we don't complain and in exchange the rent is really cheap

@Magisch Okay, yeah, I do spend a ton of money on my house :-P

@Magisch y'all'd've said something like that, clearly

I mean...we mostly get it from KFC just like everyone else, but yeah. xD

@TheTinyMan How's that different from chicken?
or chicken nuggets? Those get fried too
(Never had fried chicken)
(I think)

chicken nuggets is what happens when you throw the unsellable bits of boneless chicken into a blender

@Tinkeringbell Well, yeah, McDonald's does quite a bit of frying chicken as well .... but that's not referred to as 'fried chicken' for some reason. IMO bone is necessary to call it that.
giggle I'm super mature guys.

@TheTinyMan I prefer boneless chicken. less hassle and I don't feel like a sticky toddler afterwards (I can't eat with my hands without making a mess)

A J
2:28 PM
@Mithrandir I have 3 alarms, 6:00, 6:15, 6:30

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, I get that. I tend to like my chicken bone-in because more of the food has been spiced appropriately. :-)

A J
I wake up on the last one

@TheTinyMan depends on the size of the boneless chicken :) I tend to cut up chicken breast and spice it before cooking it ;)

@Tinkeringbell That's fair. I guess when I saw "boneless" I envisioned, like, a meat patty shape.

@TheTinyMan Like hamburgers? Yuk :P Although you can spice those really well too ;)
chicken schnitzels are also nice :)

2:33 PM
Well no, like chicken nuggets
Or, yeah, boneless chicken patties

@TheTinyMan Chicken nuggets do tend to be a bit flavorless... they need sauce :)

@Tinkeringbell And if they are cooked in the sauce, then they become boneless chicken wings! ... and are worse than bone-in chicken wings because the sauce doesn't permeate. xD

@Tinkeringbell giggety?

@Magisch I hate all sorts of stuff because they make me feel like a sticky 3 year old..
My doctor really likes me for it [sarcasm]

@Tinkeringbell Well that made that giggity even better :-p

2:37 PM
@Tinkeringbell nothing wrong with being a sticky 3-year-old :P

@TheTinyMan You can giggle all you want... you'll never catch me eating food with my bare hands or eating candy floss ;P
@Mithrandir besides the sticky part!

@Tinkeringbell shakes his head sadly The crimes that you commit against pizza...

@TheTinyMan No, I dislike pizza because of tomatoes. You can eat it with a knife and fork :P

@Tinkeringbell Crimes upon crimes!

@Tinkeringbell stares disapprovingly

2:40 PM
@Magisch I eat pizza without my hands touching it too!

@Tinkeringbell gives evil eye

Just to add oil to the fire: I like pineapple on my pizza if I have one

@Tinkeringbell If I was a drinker, you would be why I drank. :-P

@Tinkeringbell Coincidentally I like pineappples (including on pizza) and do not really like tomatoes!
Especially tomato sauce. Ugh!

@user21820 #metoo... I hate both equally though. The only thing I do like is ketchup or those really sweet tomato soups (some are more sour and I hate those)

2:44 PM
@Tinkeringbell Ahh. I don't like the sour ones, but don't really mind the sweet ones like in sandwiches. I haven't eaten ketchup for a long time though.

@user21820 We work at an office on Thursdays that has a really weird cantine... they make subs, and put exactly 1 cherry tomato on it... sliced in half, one half on either side :P
I always have to pick it off.

Haha!

@Tinkeringbell exact opposite for me
I developed an almost pathological hatred for sugar

@Magisch Oh, man, that sounds awesome :-p

@TheTinyMan less so when it really limits what you can eat

2:55 PM
@Magisch Is it just sugar or anything sweet?

there are like 2 kinds of apple I can eat everything else is too sweet

@Magisch I guess that's fair.

I taste it in everything too who the hell puts sugar in gravy or bread
flips table

Oh, man. Sugar's in most bread, isn't it?

not really, mostly in white bread

2:57 PM
@Magisch Ahh. For some reason, that's the most common bread in my silly country.

@TheTinyMan no offense but every time i've had american bread so far it tasted more like cake then bread
