Q: How do I communicate with someone who addresses me in a more meaningful way than I'm comfortable with?

D.HutchinsonLately, I've been going to a Middle Eastern restaurant a lot for dinner - the employees and customers are mostly Muslim and speak arabic, while I speak only English and am not Muslim (not really religious at all). Communicating with them is always a bit awkward for me, because they address me as...

> Slightly tangential to the experiences mentioned up there ^ last time I matched this type of dialogue with some Muslim friends in high school, saying things to them such as, "what's up, brother", they all tried to convert me to Islam.

welp, we're back up to F9 winds, and the forecast earlier was talking about F11 later on...
and @Tinkeringbell it's headed your way :P

Is northern Europe getting hit by something?

@HDE226868 just a storm
the Met Office have probably given it a name (I think they do that when it hits F10?)
Specifically, this:

On a spectrum of "Singing in the rain" to "The Perfect Storm", where is it?

@HDE226868 definitely more towards the latter

That looks unpleasant...

@ArtOfCode Oof. Not one of my favorite contour maps.

12:20 AM
Oooh, there was a really good talk at the SciPy convention here about 2-3 years ago about really awesome color maps and how awful the standard/default ones are.

@HDE226868 supposedly, at this moment it's 47.3kt out in the Solent

@Catija Oooh. I'm going to have to try that one out at some point.

@HDE226868 It's really awesome!

user15026
@ArtOfCode This is really bright and I am not sure how to interpret it

12:23 AM
@Ash tl;dr: more red = more wind
the flags are a more precise measure - the arrow points in the wind direction, the long offshoots are 10kt and the short 5kt

@ArtOfCode What does "kt" mean?

knots?

aye

user15026
@ArtOfCode ah, that helps

Q: Methods to asking supervisors for more responsibilities in an internship?

libmodcI am currently in an internship part-time, and I want to be more useful in the workplace. Nice, I'm looking forward to pizza when I get home.

@ExtrovertedMainMan I'm not one to push things off on TWP... but...

2:04 AM
Do it! 😈

You know... If you're going to be a devil on my shoulder, I'm going to need an angel, too... otherwise I'll be walking around in circles all the time.

@Catija @Ash you seem like a generally nice sort of person, you up for the task?

user15026
@Catija I think it is :)

user15026
@apaul Why not! ALthough most of my suggestions are going to be "let there be cake"

We just ate the last of the cake.

2:12 AM
Devil's food is better than angel food... For the record ;)

Considering I'm not one for chocolate...

Psh, mhmm
Contrary as usual...

You just can't handle being wrong :P

@Catija cause I rarely am :P

I think you misspelled "usually". :P

2:21 AM
Can you honestly say that you prefer angel food cake?
The most flavorless cakes ever?

Yep. I scent it with almond, steep some sliced strawberries in balsamic vinegar and pepper and spoon it over the top. Nice spongy texture and takes on the flavors.

So, obviously it's about the toppings and not the cake...

You didn't say I had to eat it plain...
Plain devil's food cake is pretty boring and I'd rather the fruit and almond flavors than chocolate.

user15026
@Catija Sign me up.

user15026
Chocolate cakes are often dry and sad and aren't very chocolate-y

user15026
2:28 AM
Angel food is tricky but you can make it so awesome in so many ways

Hopeless you are...

@Ash It's really easy! You can even just buy the cake at the store from the bakery section and the strawberries are just sliced and soaked in balsamic... there are recipes online that include sugar to sweeten the balsamic but I like the tang of it pure.

user15026
I've made my own angel food cake a few times - its my dad's favourite, with marshmallow frosting

I have tons of Bundt pans but no angel food cake pan :P

user15026
I have a large one and then one that does six mini ones

Thanks, winter... you suck.

4:35 AM
@Catija It's actually supposed to drop below freezing tonight.

@apaul Watch your pipes... ours froze. spent an hour trying to get them sealed.

@Catija I doubt that I need to worry, but I'll keep it in mind.
Mmm pizza

midnight pizza?

After work pizza, so dinner?

4:52 AM
You never have really explained what you do... or why you work so late.

@Catija are we being curmudgeonly about the quarterly contest? It seems like a nice community thing, but it doesn't look like it's gathering much support.

1 Million rep for Jon Skeet!

@apaul I'm ambivalent... is there some reason that a mod has to be the person spearheading it?

@Catija probably not? Adding the featured tag would be a nice gesture though.

Q: When looking for shared living accommodation, how to ask if room can be locked?

bluevaporI'm looking for a new place to live. I would likely be living in a shared place where I don't know everyone. @ExtrovertedMainMan uh

@ExtrovertedMainMan Is "Don't" an acceptable answer?

@ArtOfCode Yeah.
@apaul Are you putting up the 500 for first place?

@Catija yup

@apaul OK. :D Thanks. I think that's all three, then.

user15026
@apaul I think it falls below the minimum character count.

5:26 AM
@Catija Here's hoping it goes a little better this time around.
@Ash "Don't............"

user15026
@apaul Don't. No. Seriously. No.

Gah... seriously... you can't answer it anyway regardless of how many dots you add.

@Ash Probably better.
@Catija You and your fun hating......................

It's not about hating fun... it's simply impossible :P

@Catija Joking about it is entirely possible. See up there, them thar jokes :P

@apaul I don't know what that is.

@ExtrovertedMainMan This keeps going from bad to worse...

@apaul It just went from worse to trash, so it's oK.

Poe's law seems to come to mind an awful lot on this site.
Poe's law is an adage of Internet culture stating that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers or viewers as a sincere expression of the parodied views. The original statement of the adage, by Nathan Poe, was: Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is utterly impossible to parody a Creationist in such a way that someone won't mistake for the genuine article. == History == "Poe's law" is based on a comment written by Nathan Poe in 2005...

8:09 AM
@Mithrandir I see what you're saying, but it's out of context (I believe for IPS). From the IPS tour page: "Focus on questions about an actual problem you have faced. Include details about what you have tried and exactly what you are trying to do.". The focus here is on actual issues, not hypotheticals. Therefore, I don't agree that people should be asking questions on IPS simply to add another question/answer pair for the purposes of Google.
IPS is here to help people. At least that's what I interpret this stack is all about.

I kinda agree, there are so many factors that are relevant for each question that it makes it hard to generalise answers to be useful for the next person

I don't feel that writing questions on IPS simply because it hasn't been asked here before is right (especially when the questioner admits to doing just that).

10:15 AM
Hey, @Raditz_35.
So re the dissussion here‌...
First off, I'd like to ask if you've read my meta post here: Please don't write answers in comments

I'm not exactly new to SE. I've read the initial post. I do not want to read all of it, is there a specific section that matters?

No - just the general point. IPS has decided to take a stricter stance on comments and delete all comments that aren't asking for clarification or suggesting improvements.

A J
Got the Convention badge. \o/ It may be late but got it finally.

Your comments is not suggesting improvements or asking for clarification.
They run a restaurant. Restaurants are not only about food but also about mood. It's part of the experience of going to that place. Think less, enjoy more — Raditz_35 49 mins ago
You are attempting to address the OP's problem by telling them this is a normal part of the experience of going to a restaurant.

I can agree that this is neither, however I do not agree that there are only 3 options
Improvement, clarification, answer. Mine was a general comment

10:22 AM
'general comments' don't really have a place on SE. Especially IPS.SE.

Is there any meta post for that?

Check the tour.
> This site is all about getting answers. It's not a discussion forum. There's no chit-chat.

The example given as a comment "
I've found this to work well for daffodils too! - Jin 1 hour ago
" is a general comment
I know that there is no chit-chat. My comment was not chit-chat

No, that's adding information to an answer.
It should ideally be edited in and the comment deleted, actually.

So what should I have done instead? I think the OP was clearly misinterpreting the intentions

10:26 AM
It seems more like an answer to me.

One can argue I was also adding information. He could've edited "I know it's part of the experience, I still dislike it" or whatever
In a way this was a missing piece of information maybe. Some people do see restaurants only as a place to get a quick bite to eat
But I agree that I could've formulated it differently in that case
Here is the problem I have: I'm not addressing his question. My "answer" would say to stop worrying instead of suggesting an approach to how to deal with that staff.

So what are you doing with the comment, if not addressing the question?

I'm telling him that the restaurant experience can have more dimensions than he realizes
But I agree that it was not worded correctly for that.

I don't see how that's not more of an answer than anything else.

But see, this again is your personal opinion

10:30 AM
What is my opinion? That it's an answer?

I believe so. It might be an answer in a different context, like on reddit or something

In its current form, no, it's not an acceptable SE answer. But it also is suggesting a solution to the problem (don't worry, this is a normal part of restaurants), and doesn't have a place in the comments.
We'll see. I've flagged the comment. We'll see if it gets deleted ;)

Here is what I will take away from this: If I personally believe I'm adding information to the question that might be important, I will formulate it as such

'adding information to the question' is details about the OP and the situation and the like. Your comments was adding information that would be more suited to an answer... in my opinion, as you keep saying.

i've deleted it myself

10:34 AM
Okay. I've removed the other comments as well, with the exception of the comment requesting that people not answer in comments.
You can also see that I've left that exact comments in several other places, so it's not directed at you.

I've placed another comment stating exactly the same, but reformulated.
I know this is nothing personal. You are trying to improve the experience

Q: Anti-American rhetoric on IPS - can moderators remove such comments?

D.HutchinsonI've noticed anti-American rhetoric on IPS several times, mostly in the form of comments. For example, in this question How to tell a co-worker that I feel sorry for something I did? Jess's answer got these comments: Just chiming in to say not being able to say 'Sorry' after a car acci...

I believe asking if he is aware is vital to an answer because I personally would answer differently if he is aware and still feels troubled. But that's my opinions

11:06 AM
@IntrovertedMetaMan. comments like those should be removed, but not because of the anti american rethoric.

@ArtOfCode I missed it :( I was sleeping :(

@Tinkeringbell Feeling any better?

@Tinkeringbell it was windy
and a tree across the street from ours doesn't look so happy
that was from earlier, but it's still standing at pretty much that angle

@JarkoDubbeldam Oh, man, that might be a bad day for somebody! :-(

@TheTinyMan Sorta... fever is down almost an entire degree C. Right now I'm more wobbly and lazy then anything else..
@JarkoDubbeldam I just watched the news loop for 2 hours ;)

@Tinkeringbell shame, it was a good storm

2:10 PM
@Tinkeringbell oh btw, no trains whatsoever, so you should be happy you're not at work

@ArtOfCode Yeah. Although I'm glad I'm still sick and no stuck in a train
@JarkoDubbeldam jinx

yup :)

@TheTinyMan yeah, during the storm, I checked, there was a gap of a few cm between the trunk and the grass/earth
and I could move the tree by pushing. So I quickly left it alone

My grandparents were on TV a few years back because a tree fell on their car during a storm...

in probably-unrelated weirdness, did either of you happen to be listening in on LW broadcast yesterday and pick up the EMP?

6 trees across that road (which is the one my brother takes to school usually)

or was that more localised

@TheTinyMan Well, I was standing on the other side of the tree ;)

@JarkoDubbeldam That's true :-)

2:13 PM
And this is near our train station:

@Tinkeringbell they explicitly said not to call 112 for that kind of stuff
no immediate danger

2:25 PM
@JarkoDubbeldam I know... it always amazes me how many times they have to say it though

@Tinkeringbell well, apparently the police had a tweet out saying that all damages should be reported to the fire department
they reacted with "could you pls not"

Much more diplomatic than I'm tempted to be... "Doesn't the lack of further consent conversations (after your magical third date) imply a lack of imagination on your part?"

@Catija I'm not really gonna start fires that you'll have to put out later, just joking about it here to vent.

11:38 PM
... nah... I'm just trying to play dense and failing.

@Catija awwwww were you joking?

... I've told you... I don't know what that is.

Breakthrough!
@Catija almost breakthrough? ... Baby steps, we'll work on it.

:/
You really do have a very poor opinion of my appreciation for humor, don't you.

user15026
I just have trouble with text communication and nuance a lot

11:41 PM
@Catija Nah, not really, just a reason to pick on you.

@Ash It's funny... I really don't like talking on the phone much... but sometimes it feels great to have a chat over voice and really get to know the person you're talking to and how they accent things and what sort of person they are... it can affect your interpretation of what they say in the future, even over text.

I pick cause I care, if that helps ;)

You make me feel like a scab.

@Catija wordplay is a form of joking, you're making progress.

user15026
@Catija Yeah, I suspect that would make things different :)

I know some people who are completely different in text than in speech conversation

user15026
Like it feels like they're two different people

user15026
I'm just a ridiculous sillybean affectionate chatterbox no matter what tho

@Ash I probably fall into that category, I'm usually much more reserved and quiet in person.

@Ash The funny thing is that I'm actually very silly and "cute"... and I don't think much of that comes off when I type because I intersperse the cuteness with... vocabulary?

user15026
I can do the erudite educated whatever, but I gotta think about it

user15026
11:49 PM
And since most chat here is chill and casual, I don't try

user15026
(although I've done it when I am explaining various things in the Bridge or what have you, and it's fun sometimes to kinda flip that switch and watch peopel be all O.o)

I think... you mentioned that's how I seem sometimes? But the thing is... I don't try... I don't think... I just like words.
@apaul But is "in person" the same as "on the phone"? I'm really reserved around people I don't know but I get silly when I'm alone with Andy or my mom...

@Catija I don't really talk on the phone if I can avoid it. I get silly and fun with people I know really really well, but it usually takes a while to get there. #aspieProblems
Is it just me, or is this one weird:

Q: How do I politely explain to my neighbour that I don't feel comfortable being alone with her in her house while my kids play?

MrDukWe recently moved into a new neighborhood, as did our neighbor, Jane. I have two young girls (4 and 5), and Jane has a boy and girl (7 I think?). My kids love to play with them, and her kids seem to enjoy it just as much (they knock on our door asking if our girls can come out to play and whatnot...

user15026
@apaul Not that weird, depending on how they were raised/their culture

user15026
Like I don't think it's awesome, but I can see how they could get to that sort of thinking

11:57 PM
A comment just drew me back to it, which made it seem more weird, I guess.
@apaul MrDuk is just trying to protect his marriage and his image. Neighbors seeing him constantly walk out this single mom's home might start to talk and maybe inform his wife that MrDuk is having an affair. His rule is a good one, and he never said he felt uncomfortable socializing with women, only in circumstances where motives could come into question. — BlackThorn 35 mins ago
Seems antiquated, considering that the OP claimed that it wasn't a cultural issue.
