Q: How to restore harmony between my family and my wife or is it necessary?

Ray TsaiBackground I married my wife 2 years ago after we dated for about a year. There has been ongoing conflicts between my wife and my family, which I will elaborate below. My wife is Korean, I am Taiwanese. We both live overseas. My mum lives in Taiwan. During the time of these conflicts below, I h...

@ArtOfCode etiquette, or the list of implied rules for maintaining politeness, becomes obsolete when there are actual rules set in place
pushing it to the extreme to prove my point: the etiquette for what you can bring into a test is not a valid question because the etiquette is to follow the rules, which leads to answers stating the rules, which is not IPS

@JesseBarnett there are no rules for that particular situation, though

true, but the law only covers some of it
the law doesn't cover whether hotlinking is okay
realistically, it only covers whether rehosting is okay - legally, it's not, but people do it anyway

the law is controversial and complicated around this area yes. But it still exists, and a discussion about whether hot-linking is okay or not should definitely be focused around the law, rather than the etiquette.

1:02 AM
that's kinda my point, though - there is no law there, so you can't focus a discussion around it
at best it's 50/50 law/etiquette, but I suspect heavier weighted to the right

I am not a law student but even if you are correct that there is no law, etiquette is still obsolete here. An answer might say that throughout all the copyright and fair use laws, there is nothing that can be applied to hot-links so therefore it is okay to do so, or so therefore we can not really say. An answer about the etiquette that ignores the fact that this is a law-sensitive subject would not really work..

Sure, you can't realistically have an answer about etiquette that ignores law completely but neither can you have an answer that says "no law against it so it's okay". There's no law against yelling "I CAN'T HEAR YOU" when someone says something you don't like, either, but it's hardly in keeping with societal etiquette :)
there definitely is etiquette around hotlinking - it's more okay than it used to be, but there's still plenty of opinion around it

..... the law around copyright is controversial so not everyone will agree that that there is no law that applies to it. So if you try and answer with this etiquette someone is going to say "but that is against the law", whether they are correct isn't the point. You should not have answered about etiquette unless it is obviously legal to do said action.
and because using a copyrighted image on a blog post is not obviously legal. the discussion belongs on law not IPS
speaking loudly is obviously legal, so there could potentially be an IPS question about it

1:19 AM
But the point of my comment there is that if the person who drew the comic gives permission, the law is irrelevant.

i don't think irrelevant is the right word. If the person has given permission then the law and etiquette both become clear that is it fine to add the comic
another point is that its clear OP is concerned with what they are allowed to do, rather than how to be polite
I just really don't think you can answer this question without first acknowledging the law
I mean... just look at the answers that the question has - one is just a try this, but the other (better) answer makes it pretty clear that this should not be on IPS

@JesseBarnett Yeah, "allowed" isn't really in our scope.

@Catija mhmm

1:40 AM
"license, profit, commercial use, permission" with a long list of what you can and can't legally do seems to answer the question perfectly... and when the ideal answer has absolutely no IPS in it, I think that shows us a little something about the question

2:00 AM
I disagree. I think the ideal answer to that would be "get in touch with the author <insert possible wording>; do what they ask you to"

Eh, I'd go with "Look at website for guidance from author, if none present, contact author ... etc"

and your answer would be better than mine :)

2:42 AM
Went with my stepson to the record shop. The kid has some good taste for his age, he got Pink Floyd and Queen on vinyl.

Oooh, fun! :D

Q: How should I approach a fellow employee who left a "bad" review of our company?

CoomieI work in a business where I oversee some social media. I noticed what I would call a sub prime review of our company on Google - it's 3 stars. So it's not the end of the world, but it's not 5 stars. The review was left by an employee in another department. I don't want to get this person fire...

Q: How to respond when someone thinks I am older than I am

anonymousBackground: I am a 16 year old in high school and due to various opportunities (namely being homeschooled) I have been able to take many courses at a local college. Until recently I have been taking one class per semester which means that I pop up for class and effectively disappear afterwards ...

4:02 AM
everyone studies in school.

@CaptainBohemian I accepted the teaching offer today :)

@D.Hutchinson oh. I feel like living in a limbo.

keep applying, @CaptainBohemian :)

Because nobody can be talked with my concerns. They just can't understand my concerns.

good luck with your apps
ping me over at the academia room, if you wanna talk about this more specifically :)

4:11 AM
I can't even been assigned to teach a real theoretical physics course in university because I don't have PhD. Those experimental courses don't really use physics in even university level.
@D.Hutchinson I saw Netherlands has PhD programs open for application.
You don't know how ignorant people on the street in research. They can just ask your vocation for curiosity, but can't really help with anything about it because they even don't know what research as a vocaton means.

@D.Hutchinson hang on...

if you tell them about PhD application, they would ask you if you go to some cram school to prepare for an entrance exam for entering PhD.

in Teenage Stack Exchangers (experimental), 3 hours ago, by D.Hutchinson
i'm only 13 - still not wise enough yet :(
they hired a 13-year old teacher?

4:27 AM
... Awkward?

5:19 AM
@ArtOfCode If there isn't a rule about this there probably should be.

user15026
@apaul about which? Age on SE?

user15026
If so, there kinda is, COPPA and all that, so 13 and above

@Ash About pretending to be 13 in a room for teenagers...

user15026
@apaul oh, that, yeah that's a different one's problem than I thought you meant

@Ash Ya... That's unsettling for a lot of reasons. I'm guessing/hoping that the staff will be keeping a close watch on that room.

5:25 AM
@apaul Not so sure they're pretending to be 13. Maybe pretending to be a teacher. Actions in another room yesterday seemed 13ish, at best.

user15026
Either way, I am sure the appropriate eyes are paying attention - the network is good at keeping eyes on things like this so they don't get out of hand

@GypsySpellweaver It's possible, but some of their stuff reads the other way.

There actions yesterday definitely got a few eyes. Including at least one mod from that room. I'm not worried about it.

So... About that other, less unsettling, subject...

user15026
@apaul I listened to that music you linked me, I liked it :)

5:34 AM
@Ash sweet. NOFX is a personal favorite.

user15026
Thanks for sharing it with me :)

@Ash What's your usual flavor of music?

user15026
Country (a lot of this), Prog Metal, Hard Rock, Symphonic Metal

user15026
although there are really no genres that I say no to

@Ash I wouldn't have guessed country, I'll try not to judge too harshly ;)

user15026
5:39 AM
@apaul I grew up with it, I love it for its history and sound. (I also grew up white trash rural, and I say that with the utmost love)

@Ash I'll admit to liking some country... Does Hank the 3rd count?

Q: What are sensible dating precautions to avoid accusations of sexual harassment?

TimRecently, a woman accused a celebrity of sexually assaulting her. Her account has been widely criticised as not describing sexual harassment, but simply describing a bad date. One of the articles commentating on her account links to a YouGov poll asking what actions constitute sexual harassment....

user15026
@apaul I'd think so yes

@ExtrovertedMainMan Red alert! All hands to battle stations! SHIELD WALL!!!

user15026
@ExtrovertedMainMan deep sigh

5:44 AM
That's a confusing question.

@Ash Sorry incoming trainwreck... Here's hoping it doesn't hit HNQ.

user15026
I kinda just want to link this and be done:

user15026
Let me switch metaphors and share with you a theory that came to me last night. It's called Have Sex Like You're Throwing A Party. It was going to be Have Sex Like Your Grandma Throwing A Party, but I don't know your grandma.

user15026
(And the following tweets in the thread)

@Ash I was a little skeptical about the one-boxed tweet, but that's actually pretty good.

user15026
5:53 AM
@apaul YEah, I didn't have a good way to link the whole thing in one go.

@Catija I'm thinking it's too broad?

user15026
@ExtrovertedMainMan Yay, my first IPS answer!

Honestly I've seen that user make some bad stands, so I may be reading into intentions here...

user15026
I just don't trust a lot of the whole "oh no women are going to accuse me of things" takes

user15026
because if your first thought on initiating a thing is "this might end up with someone reporting me for assault" then really you need to be thinking about your approach, not worrying about arming yourself for some battle

user15026
5:59 AM
because it shouldn't be that.

I'm also sorta wondering whether the person who said offering to buy them a drink is harassment needs someone to talk to... I'd be sort of either worried about their past or I'd be concerned that my survey was biased.

@Catija Might be a contextual issue? I could see environment playing into that."Can I buy you a drink?" sounds different when you're at work waiting tables.

user15026
@Catija I think that one is so very context dependent

Ffs. 10% of 18-24 y/o guys think it is... so ...

user15026
Again, context is everything

user15026
6:07 AM
and stuff like this really doesn't take context into account

user15026
There are areas of my life where I would totally think people asking me out for a drink is harassment, and there are cases where I would be like "hold on let me grab my purse first"

Sure. Context is important. I'm not arguing that.

@Catija Looking at the graph, the far left is a little more concerning than the far right.

@ash @artofcode @catija I was in that teenager room because the bot / human @HenryWHHackv2.1.1 brought me in there once, and I used that room to mostly chat with it / him, as a way to keep distance from other rooms for awhile. A coping mechanism. Please don't let apaul instigate anything. There was no else in that room besides me and Henry. Thanks.
(I still don't actually know whether Henry is a bot / human / employee of SE, btw, but it's amusing to talk to it / him.)

user15026
@D.Hutchinson human, not an employee

6:15 AM
@ash ok, got it

@D.Hutchinson So... Are you 13?

@D.Hutchinson hmm... I'm pretty sure that @GypsySpellweaver hangs out in there too ;)

no, I'm not - just teasing Henry, who I thought was a bot, because he was so curious - and went "13 confirmed!".
@Mithrandir not sure - I was also in that special counseling room for a bit
that gypsy and henry hang out in
I used both the teenagers room and that "counseling" room to avoid you this room for a bit, after that "creep" drama

It's not a counseling room, though, iirc Henry did say he invited @D.Hutchinson there for counseling.

it was therapeutic to get away for a bit - that's all
@GypsySpellweaver yep he indeed said it was for "counseling"

6:21 AM
I think it's a room Henry made so that he could have his own "territory"

I see
@GypsySpellweaver sorry for lashing out at you

What is this about?

I'm not "invested" in other's words. I don't take anything personally.
Glad you spoke here @HenryWHHackv2.1.1

And I will not speak again until I have spoken to my lawyer. (Mithrandir)

6:24 AM
Oh ... geez ... :(

OK but why are you glad I spoke?

@Ash Anyway... Country music? I kinda like some bluegrass, Appalachian type stuff. Not sure if it qualifies as "country" but some of it has an earthy anarchist pov that I enjoy.

@D.Hutchinson Inside joke. (Not my lawyer.)

user15026
@apaul It does, in my mind. They share roots.

user15026
I like a lot of classic country type sounds.

6:25 AM
@ash is Dave Matthews Band popular where you live?

@Ash I enjoy a good fiddle and some washboard.

You were a part of the subject, and knowing your are paying attention here allows you to not be blind-sided by the conversation later.
@apaul Do you like Cape Breton style fiddle?

@apaul But the person asking the question doesn't seem as worried about them.

user15026
@apaul Fiddle music is my kryptonite

@Catija Ya... Wasn't gonna say it... But...
@GypsySpellweaver Lemme Google and get back to you on that.

6:28 AM
@apaul Jerry Holland and Natalie McMasters are two excellent examples of the style.

user15026
@GypsySpellweaver Oh, I love that style so much

I especially like the McMasters clan. Music for generations!

@GypsySpellweaver Oh, ya I dig it. Didn't know the name. Makes for great pub music.

Celtic, old and new, is my main genre of choice.

Found the TED:
The Appalachian stuff seems to draw some influence from that style.

6:34 AM
@apaul That's because it's such a part of their roots.

A J
Only 57 seconds

user15026
@apaul I was going to head to bed but now I am listening to this :D

One more for the road... This is the sort of stuff that got me listening to that sort of stuff:

@HenryWHHackv2.1.1 are you reading this chat, btw? There's plenty to read where apaul is clearly instigating and trying to get me in trouble, because you brought me into that teenagers room. You probably had a good understanding of the types of people that are in here already, way before I joined. Please don't do that again. I feel misled by you and by @GypsySpellweaver now.

Like a train crash in slow motion...

6:45 AM
@apaul Gaelic Storm has a lot of good stuff too.

user15026
@apaul hahaha oh man the people are clapping on the off beats >.<

Counter-point :)

@Ash I'm usually that person.... lol

user15026
@apaul ooooh this was goooood stuff

@Catija if you allow apaul's instigating, whenever he pleases, it will only scare new users away. Me leaving won't solve the issue, and I think you know that. He kept leading you on to say bad things about me, when you should have been impartial. I know it's not all your fault.

6:50 AM
@Ash Crust Punk, or Gutter Punk.

user15026
@apaul It's wonderful.

@Catija At least, not earphones? they come with mobile phones

@Ash DON'T HAVE KIDS!!! The spouse you can tell to shove it and go back to sleep... the kid... not so much.

Hi @AJ :)

@AJ The Apple ones are annoying. I toss them in a drawer and forget about them... I've also had my phone for about 4 years... maybe longer... so who knows where they are at this point.

user15026
@Catija giggles duly noted. Likely leaving that to my sister anyhow and my husband is still in another country for the forseeable...time period. So I shall take my joys where I can and watch fiddle music at 2am!

YAY!

Good night! Thank you for all the tasty tasty music bits, my ears are happy now

Yay!
And then?

@apaul do you also like the slower stuff?

@GypsySpellweaver Occasionally?

Dougie MacLean has some really good stuff. Tends to make you think too, if you "listen" to it.

7:16 AM
@GypsySpellweaver Is there a specific song that's a good example?

When the People Speak, or All Together
Heck, go with the whole Marching Mystery album

A J
Are there TS fans here?

who/what is TS?

A J
Taylor Swift

That would be the Lady. She's country all the way. Though I don't know if shes a fan of TS, but she's used the name before.
George Strait is her main "hunk"

7:21 AM
@AJ TS feels like a blast from the past
e.g. that time when Kanye got up on stage to ruin her acceptance speech :(
Hi @Tinkeringbell - are you feeling better?

@GypsySpellweaver When the people speak has some great lyrics, not my usual flavor, but it's pretty good.

Dougie is unconventional.

@GypsySpellweaver Definitely like the message.

IIRC he did some of the soundtrack for Last of the Mohican's too. Could be wrong, of course. That's a common occurrence.

@Ash yeah, commenting on someone's looks at work is a nono, commenting on them during a date is kinda what you're supposed to do :p

7:26 AM
Well, guess I won't be sleeping soon. The lady didn't sleep long, and is up again.

@GypsySpellweaver For some reason I think you might like Dirtwire:
It's different, but it's interesting.

I might have to get Rip Tide on my mobile so I can hear it. Sounds interesting with what I can hear from the PC speakers.

Sailing the Solar Flares on that album is pretty nice too.

Hi @CaptainBohemian :)

My PC has old $5 speakers from 2005. I can "preview" it here, but have to move it to my mobile to "hear" anything decent. I guess 5.5 decades on the original ears don't help matters much either.

7:39 AM
did you solve your hunger issues today, @CaptainBohemian?

Hit the record shop with my stepson earlier today. Kid has some surprisingly good taste. He bought Queen and Pink Floyd on vinyl, but he wants to get Biggie and Dio next time.

@D.Hutchinson yes, just come back from solving. But feel a little bit headache, not knowing if it's due to the prolonged chill effect after cold shower yesterday. I think cold shower doesn't do so good effect to the body as some webs describe. Conversely, it makes body chilly and has harmful effect.

Can you find a gym to go shower in @CaptainBohemian?
@CaptainBohemian I had a chai latte and a hot chocolate today - it solves both my hunger and cold issues

7:55 AM
I am not familiar with gym outside school. I only know research universities should have public shower rooms, but I have only explored those universities I have studied or worked in and these universities are all far away from here (I actually always try to choose universities as far from this ghostly home city as possible). Thus I don't know where the public shower rooms inside universities in this ghostly city are.
Last April when I went to my alma mater to visit my professor, I also accidently found the public shower rooms in its gym. I think I can go there to take a shower sometime. But it's really far away and I don't want to go that distant place just for taking a warm shower.
I think I have two biggest troubles now: hunger trouble and shower trouble.

@CaptainBohemian sorry to hear :(
@CaptainBohemian what are you doing for income these days?

I don't do anything for income these days. I use the remaining money I got from my last position.

1
Q: How to handle being interrupted

SilicabelloWhat is a good polite way to handle being interrupted while talking in a group and regain focus, interest, and conversational confidence from the others?

I always try my best to save money for incomeless days. Like when I graduated, I still had money to use for six months before I got first full-time teaching assistant position.

ah, nice :)
@CaptainBohemian I am looking forward to my audience next week - I suspect that they will have some mathematical maturity, compared to my freshmen students last semester

8:11 AM
Looking for academic positions is very exhausting task.

also, it's a special topics course - not a standard calculus course
yeah, I'm sure :(
good luck, keep looking, and stay close to whoever can help you

how nice you can teach math. I have never got a position which let me really perform my training.
nobody can help me now because I am in wilderness.

email some professors ...

@CaptainBohemian my anonymous teaching evaluations were pretty good - students mostly said that I was articulate, helpful, and available outside of class. The 'bad' thing was that sometimes I spoke too softly :(
... which ... could make for a good IPS question, actually.
how to project my voice for a classroom of students

8:19 AM
That sounds off-topic, actually - asking for how to project your voice sounds like a physical skill, not an interpersonal skill.

hmm ... true

@D.Hutchinson what does ''spoke too softly'' mean?

as in, not loud enough for people in the back of the room

yeah

8:27 AM
I always used microphone.

I see

well, my students didn't think I taught well. I actually had no interest in teaching those experiments; that's really not my expertise. But without a position, how to live?

yeah :(

there is just no position in theoretical physics for master graduates here.

I see
Ok, I'm gonna write my IPS question from a couple days ago ... brb ...

8:31 AM
I think those students were better than me in doing those experiments because they were all engineering students.
what is IPS?

IPS is Interpersonal Skills, this place ;)

better at execution, sure, but did they get new results? that's ... a different ballgame ...

But why does writing those questions need several days?

haha, it doesn't need several days - I've been lazy :(
and hiding from this room, at times
IPS can be too much for me to handle
ok, lemme write my question, be back later

@D.Hutchinson Not really no. I felt great when I woke up this morning, went to the dentist and came back and the fever is raging again :/

oh no :(
what are you taking for the fever?

Just paracetamol and drinking lots of water

nice
hope you feel better soon :)
might be worth going to a doctor to check your temperature ...

@D.Hutchinson We have a thermometer at home. As long as I'm not hitting over 40 degrees centigrade, I'm not going to a doctor
They'll just say it's flu anyways

9:12 AM
ah, ok cool
yeah, I was thinking worst-case scenarios - high fevers
can't mess around with that ...

I seldom get a fever even I am sick.

@D.Hutchinson I know.... but I've got a mom that does nursing (mostly geriatrics, but hey... she knows ;) ) anyways, fevers aren't as dangerous for 26 year olds as they are for geriatrics or small children. I just have to sit this one out....
@CaptainBohemian I can't remember the last time I had a fever either.... forgot how much it sucks ;)

ah, nice @Tinkeringbell :)
@CaptainBohemian lucky you - I get fevers once a year, at least. During flu season.

I don't get flu usually during flu season.
I do get cold occasionally, but it usually doesn't have the symptom fever.

lucky @CaptainBohemian :)
I haven't gotten the flu yet this season - I always get it late. So, pretty soon ... any day now :(

9:22 AM
well, I don't know the difference between a cold and a flu.

@CaptainBohemian flu has some more nasty details I believe...

what are those details?

@CaptainBohemian not keeping any food inside...
I think that's where the line between a cold and a flu is in Dutch at least...

I guess flu refers to the illness caused by some kind of virus. But if I don't have a test, how do I know if my illness is caused by that virus?

@apaul brilliant. A friend on SE introduced me to NOFX and I love them!

9:29 AM
''not keeping any food inside'' means having no appetite?

@Ash You may like Abandoned Stars: youtube.com/watch?v=m2eLfJpHeLY

@CaptainBohemian Usually that indicates throwing up.

two takes on Prog - both Edinburgh based

@Mithrandir so horrible. then I think I haven't got a flu for long.
my biggest health problem now is not being able to sleep well.

9:44 AM
hmm ... I wouldn't say throwing up is a requirement for having the "flu" ... a nasty fever usually is enough ...
throwing up is one symptom only
@CaptainBohemian I hear ya - it's almost 5 am here, I really should sleep :(

@D.Hutchinson my sleeping problem is that I wake before I get enough sleeping but can't fall asleep again because I think a lot and my brain can't go back to dormant status.

yeah ... I hear ya :(

I have this problem for long. I am overwhelmed with worries for long.

me, too @CaptainBohemian

I initially fall into this poor sleeping condition due to my master advisor delayed my papers persistently.

9:58 AM
I see

he seems not to understand how much I hope to publish my papers for entering a PhD program easier.
he said a lot of his previous students get safe academic jobs without publications.
maybe they can, but I am not sure if I can. since I have written papers, why can't he help me publish them?

at the master's level? hmm ... that is tough ... and not generally expected, I think
except for maybe in computer science, where undergrads are typically expected to publish, if they are PhD material ...
your advisor might be right ... and feels your work isn't worth pushing towards publication ... I dunno, though :(
hey, I'm gonna sleep @CaptainBohemian -- talk soon
g'nite everyone

10:14 AM
@D.Hutchinson no, he thinks it is worthy of publication. But he just can't get time to review my papers.
well, I finally managed to publish on my own but only half of my work.
our master degree is part of graduate program, which is a great advance from undergraduate program.
here when bechelor graduates apply for graduate school, they can ony apply for entering master program.
they can't directly apply for PhD program.
but it's possibe to apply for becoming PhD students half way in their master studies in the university they study master.
here master students can have publications with the help of their advisor. It's not really tough.

user11500I have become a subject of humor in my family and friends. They absurdly find it quite hilarious that I am still a virgin. I do not have a girl friend. I do not have the option of dating. The only way I can get near a girl is if I get married to her and that is not going to happen. There are a fe...

Wow, proposed an edit on this last one jsut to be sure I got it right and there was not something to salvage inside it...

I wonder if it's bad enought to warrant R/A deletion... or just cast regular votes?

@Tensibai Should I reject the edit? It's gonna be deleted anyway and your edit rep will not be counted.

@AJ Thanks, I'd vote to let it be deleted anyway, there's nothing
I was just sharing the fact I had to go through editing to ensure there was really nothing, so once done I submitted it just in case someone saw something at review with more 'breaks' in the wall of text :)

Q: How do I deal with a coworker who unplugs my monitor because I didn't turn it off?

CashbeeBackground: I have a coworker - let's call her Anne - who believes that saving energy wherever possible is everyones most important responibility. Anne has made that clear from the day that I joined the company and I respect that. In fact, I find it quite honourable. Anne regularly writes emai...

Morning folks

Hey you

NVZ
@apaul That's all folks.
@Tinkeringbell You, hey.

What's new and exciting?

NVZ
@apaul Me, when I was a baby.

@NVZ I'm sure you were adorable ;)

3:34 PM
I'm on a 39,3 degrees fever streak... I managed to hit that 3 times in a row now...
But that's about it.

NVZ
@apaul I'm sure I was. I still am - just ask the future me.

I already watched men in black 1,2,3, finding nemo and finding dory... any suggestions?

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell well, binge watch Stranger Things. It's the best medicine. Trust me, I'm an doctor engineer.

@NVZ Already seen that...

@Tinkeringbell go to a doctor?

3:36 PM
@apaul Why? fever isn't dangerous...
I was asking for movies, not health advice ;)

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell doctors aren't dangerous either. Go see one, they're adorable cute beings.

@Tinkeringbell I know

They'll just note another patient with flu and add me to the statistics..

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell afraid of statistics, are we? :P

@NVZ I don't like being reduced to a number ;)

NVZ
3:38 PM
@Tinkeringbell How else would you like to be reduced? Into dust? We're all nothings in the vast universe. :P

@Tonepoet That's my go-to for when things don't go as planned. Missed the bus? Blame Tim Post for losing his keys, which led to a chain of events that ended up in me missing my bus.

@Tinkeringbell Did you get a chance to watch GLOW?

@apaul Not yet, what's it about?

@Tinkeringbell Glamorous Ladies of Wrestling, it's on Netflix, we talked about it a while back.

@apaul Oh wait... I think I remember now ;)

Made by the same who did Orange is the New Black

@apaul Orange is no longer the new black. It never has been. Black is always the new black.

@NVZ Unless in prison.

Q: How do you communicate efficiently with someone who is stuttering?

PhilippI recently got a project at work where I need to regularly talk to a person who is suffering from very bad stuttering. He is very competent and professional at his job, but talking with him is a bit tedious, because he frequently has issues forming a complete sentence. What are the general do's...

3:58 PM
My comments on this stuttering question. Is my understanding correct or not?

@Snow I actually don't know. It might be a good idea to take that to the IPS meta... and in the mean while just post an answer that states that the first thing that comes up when you google that stuff is ... :P
I know that over at Movies they expect you to always link your source, at least.

I think it's a general think on stack that you should put some effort into research before asking a question. But I'll put something in Meta to see what the consensus is. It does seem a bit dumb to ask questions purely for the purpose of putting stuff on stackexchange.
If that's the case, what's the point of the internet?

@Snow I can understand you're peeved right now.... I would be if I posted an answer and the OP immediately came and said 'I know this, that's what comes up when I google it'.... :/
But then again we should always assume good intentions, so we can't immediately say this question was posted just to put stuff on here...
Right now though, you're only one of a select few that can see that comment on your answer, so for many other people the comment underneath the question won't be making any sense. Which is why I say, take it to meta

I don't think (many) ask questions purely for the point of putting a paragraph on the Internet. It's just when the barrier to ask is nearly purely anecdotal that it can seem that way, but that's just because some questions are far more interesting and less answerable by the application of common sense than others.
But the price to get all the pearls in the real breadth of this topic is going to be a crapload of sand ... it's just going to be how it is. Resenting that isn't going to be very healthy, as there's not much you can do about it.

4:13 PM
Thanks @Tinkeringbell I've asked the question on Meta.
As for the "why isn't the general advice on the internet suitable", I think it's fairly clear that it's a general stuttering question. Many of the questions here have specific scenarios that make a general googled answer difficult to fit the question exactly.

@Snow ... It's also very possibly that they saw a large block quote without a source and just did a copy/paste search of the first paragraph.

Hmm. So you're not going to address whether we expect people to research questions before posting them? You'd rather just concentrate on what I did wrong?

@Snow Nah, more thinking that this started because you were accused of plagiarism, when they could have just asked for a source.

4:29 PM
I'm looking beyond that, at the reason behind them asking the question in the first place when there's pages worth of applicable advice readily available.

@Snow Then why answer and then take issue?

Fine. I give up. You win. I'm wrong.

@Snow People should search before asking, but if you find an answer in a few seconds on Google, ask for clarification before answering.
It struck me as a situation where both parties are in the wrong.
Hmm... I'm not making friends, but hopefully I'm influencing people...

@Snow The point of Stack Exchange is so that when people Google a problem, they find SE. That's why the 'general reference' close reason was removed years ago.
