Q: Should we rename the Controversial Topic Post Notice?

apaulIt seems like the Controversial Topic notice could be worded a little better. I know I'm not the first person to question whether the word "controversial" was the best choice, and I'm pretty sure I won't be the last. When the notice is applied to some questions it may give the OP and future read...

@Catija @Tinkeringbell @Shog9 Just to give you all a heads up.

Q: Question by minors about relationships

StephenGThere was a question ( this one , now on hold ) which was asked by someone who said they were a 15 year old. Is there (or should there be) a policy about giving advice on this subject (relationships) to a minor ? That particular question does not have any overt sexual context, by the way, but I...

Nope.

6:28 AM
@apaul would the tag apply to the asexual question?

7:27 AM
@Catija probably, but it's always better to ask.
@Catija I really don't want to say it, but our site has a culture problem that's going to need to be addressed at some point.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that... the site has a lot of things to work on... it's a bit early to really attribute anything to "culture". Getting everyone to agree on something is impossible.

Every time I talk to my friends in real life about my frustrations here they tell me to stop talking about this stuff online. I really don't want that to be the solution...

You have to talk about your frustrations with people who care about what you're talking about and who have a connection to it. I'm endlessly frustrated that I can only resort to talking about IPS with people on SE because no one else I interact with outside of SE uses it to the degree I do. I've talked to other people who have similar problems...
I try to talk to Andy but he really doesn't "get it"... I have to spend more time explaining the mechanics before I can even get to the thing that actually bothers me.

I get that frustration too, but it's slightly more complicated in my case. There's a distinct "people on the internet suck" that's kinda pervasive when it comes to queer issues.

Oh. Sure. Everyone can be open about what they really feel when they're hiding behind an avatar and a fake name.
... But, hopefully, the internet also gives people the same ability to be open about who they are and find an accepting community when they live in one that won't accept them. The internet can be a horrible place - but it can be a beautiful one, too.

7:38 AM
@Catija True. But I can smack the taste out of someone's mouth in real life ;)

Now I've decided you're one of those Florida muscle beach/bouncer guys.

Sorry... It is painfully tempting to go there at times.

Though, I suppose I've never technically even asked you what gender you identify as.
Oh, but you put it in that last question.

@Catija mhmmm

:)
So... yeah. Muscle beach guy.

7:42 AM
@Catija I'm not a big guy. But when presented with fight or flight, I have a nasty habit of choosing to fight... It's bad for my health, and job prospects, but it's hard to get over.
Just an angry punker really.

Well, hopefully it's something that, in learning to not react here, you can learn not to react in real life. :D
Maybe you should take some Tae Kwon Do classes.
Ugh, it's almost 2 am and the kids next door are still partying outside.

Meh... I doubt that's really necessary. The self-discipline would probably be helpful though.
@Catija you should join them. It'll be an adventure ;)

I don't like people.

@Catija who does?

I'm one of those people who goes to a party and plays with the pets.

@Catija *avoids obvious inappropriate jokes
Damn... You don't even get that do you?

unless you're talking about bestiality... no.

@Catija I can relate, pets are awesome

They are!... though, sometimes it takes some coaxing to get them out from under the bed.

Furry jokes. It's a thing, look it up lol
Actually don't Google that...

And when I say "pets" I mean cats... I'm not a huge fan of dogs unless they're big.
@apaul I know what furries are.

A: Question by minors about relationships

apaulI think the best way to handle these questions is to answer to the best of our ability, the same way we would answer any other relationship question, with the minor caveat of making an effort to be age appropriate. @ArtOfCode Okay, I'm defeated, I give in. I'll accept the responsibility :P

Well... 17.3k, not quite 20k ;P But thanks!

12:58 PM
There's a surprising number of young mods around

@Tinkeringbell I think there is a problem with requiring sourcing
What worked for someone has the potential to not work or backfire spectacularly
By virtue of the fact that no two people react alike

@Magisch True.... but opinions are no more than soapboxing, whether framed nice or not...

Thats not true
Literally every single answer on IPS is an opinion

So, I was in a situation and did this... is always better than... you should do this because that's how my perfect world works

In a actual discussion personal experience doesn't even count as a source or reference

1:00 PM
@Magisch Then literally every answer here has a problem?

@Tinkeringbell I'm suggesting that, unless you want to start forcing people to back up their answers with peer reviewed studies, we're all swimming in the opinion pool here
This is the same problem as on the workplace, where they don't have a "back it up rule" either. They have more of a "Don't just tell people to do stuff, but explain why you think that's a good idea" rule
Which I think is much more sensible.

@Magisch Hmmm.... I'll take another look

@Magisch what?

At least, as someone who has written over 150 answers on the workplace, I have never been asked to include external sources in my answers
> You should always include in your answer information about why you think your answer is correct.
This information can be either an external source or a logical explaination based on common assumptions as to why you personally think your recommended course of action works

We don't say oh, this one candidate has 5 years of experience, but this other candidate has ideas and they're able to give an explanation of why those ideas work. I'm going with the second canidate.

1:06 PM
Right, but this isn't a developer job interview

@Magisch this isn't a job interview.

"Back it up" is sensible. "Know the science and the studies" isn't really practicable.

This is a site where people share their suggestions and experiences about one of the literally most subjective subjects possible

@Magisch If I'm hiring for a counselor or a psychologist or a social worker, experience still matters.

We're not hiring here, though
This site's topic doesn't lenditself to "right" answers
Only to answers that make sense and answers that don't

1:07 PM
@Magisch no. But you're saying that because this is a subjective topic, experience is meaningless. That's absolute crap.

And both of that is incredibly subjective

@Magisch you're missing the point :P You're correct that there's no right answer, but experience is still valuable.

Imagine I add "I'm suggesting this because I tried it with a coworker of mine and that worked"
That information is absolutely useless to anyone but another coworker of mine who has the same exact issue with the same exact coworker
That's noise

Yes, interpersonal skills are subjective. But some people are really good at them, and some people are bad at them. So there is some sort of experience or expertise involved.

@Magisch That's good. That's an explanation for why you're suggesting that solution. It lets people make a judgement on whether that solution is likely to work for them or not.

1:09 PM
@Magisch I disagree - it can be useful to know that it worked with someone else, same as it's useful to know that it blew up in someone else's face.
2

Stack Exchange sites are supposed to be expert Q&A, i.e. creating a repository of expert knowledge.

@ArtOfCode I believe such a statement is magnitudes less useful then a reasoning of why I think the solution will work

It's no guarantee it'll work for them, but knowing the situation it was previously used in makes it easier to make an informed judgement.

Anecdotal experience isn't evidence and can't be used to prove or justify anything. I believe there is even a logical fallacy named after trying to use it for that purpose

This doesn't mean that everyone or anyone on the site needs to be an expert. But it does mean that people should be contributing expertise on the questions they're answering.

1:10 PM
@Magisch I think you're right, but less useful doesn't equate to not useful.

@Magisch oh, of course. Having that line doesn't replace the need for an explanation of why you did that in the first place with your coworker.

@Magisch really? Anecdotal knowledge is used to make decisions all of the time. It clearly has value in certain situations.

But having the info that it worked with someone else is useful knowledge.

NVZ
@Magisch we may not be hiring, but we are all collectively marketing the site, making it attractive to potential visitors. Our answers (and everything) has to be believable - either supported by science or where it's not readily available, by believable explanations/experiences, which are then supported by others in the form of "me too" upvotes.

So what do you guys want? A token acknowledgement underneath every answer that the answerer didn't quite think that one up from thin air? I think that would be incredibly easy to fake and mostly noise

1:11 PM
@Magisch no. I want this
-4
A: Why doesn't this site have a back it up rule?

user288The problem that this site currently has is that the answers are mostly suggestions. What this means is that answers will simply suggest suggestions to the problem, but there is no way for anyone reading the answer to know if the suggestion will work unless they actually try it. This leads to pro...

@Magisch Answers should include explanation of why the author thinks they will work. If that includes (but preferably is not limited to) an anecdote, that's still useful.

I mean it's really useful to use personal experience as a framing device to explain why something works / doesn't work
For instance "I have found that $solution won't work because $insert anecdote, I think this is because $explaination"
ideally

Q: How should I provide examples of experience as support for my answer?

TheThirdManI attempted to answer a question about group dynamics today, which I did by talking about how I think this issue would be best resolved. I received two comments, suggesting that I should provide whether I had personal experience on the matter, in order to create a more cohesive, less speculative ...

providing examples isn't feasible for many questions here since the situations are so very specific that people can at best generalize to similar circumstances

1:14 PM
@Magisch yep, that's the ideal

@Tinkeringbell I'm never a fan of policies like that.

NVZ
@Magisch well, if someone actually wants purely authoritative advice, they should seek professional help - lawyers, doctors, therapists, etcetera..there's only so much we can provide in an online setting such as this. anyone who claims to be a professional here may not necessarily be able to prove it.

@ArtOfCode But if you assume that as a standard like <10% of the answers here fulfill that

But if people don't have an explanation, personal experience is still useful - and the site as a whole will judge whether the answer as a whole is useful by voting on it.

@Magisch if the situation is so specific that you don't have expertise, maybe wait for someone who does.
Not every question needs to be answered right away.

1:15 PM
Most people dispense with the anecdote even when one exists because it reads like noise

@Magisch not as a standard, or a rule, but an ideal.

and noise gets edited out on SE
I can tell you for instance that nearly every single one of my answers comes from transference of a situation I personally witnessed
But I don't go on a diatribe on how I came to think this was a useful idea, I just state the idea and explain why I think it might work

The fact that people feel like anyone can answer any question is one of the problems facing this site. Because not everyone can answer every question. People should be mindful of what questions they have expertise in and can answer. But we're seeing people who are treating this site like a free for all, where they can write answers about anything regardless of what they actually know about the topic.

@Magisch That's fine. Those are good answers. That doesn't mean that every answer has to be like that - if all you have is personal experience to back your suggestion up, then include that and let the community judge.

@Hamlet What makes you think people do?

NVZ
1:18 PM
@Magisch think of the site as a friend circle focussed on this one subject. you obviously have a lot of circles depending on the subjects and common interests you have. this site can be thought of as a circle of friends who share their experiences on a subject that you may or may not trust as you see fit.

I don't go around answering every question because there are lots that I have absolutely no clue what to do about

@Magisch people fricking admit to answering questions about situations they have no experience with.

1:20 PM
@Magisch or they have an answer that sounds good but is actually crap if applied in real life, and because very few of the people voting on answers are going to test it in real life, it gets upvotes.

There is a reason I haven't answered that one. I'm an only child who knew all of my relatives since early on. There isn't a speck of perspective I could add to that :p
@Hamlet So what is your goal for these answers? To delete them?
Because that'll do exactly one thing: Make everyone add a generic text on how they've been in that situation before, even if they haven't

The idea that because this site is subjective, it's a free for all is why you get answers that don't actually answer the question but veer on into political discussions, etc.

I hope we're aiming for a voting culture here?

I'm working on a meta about deleting stuff btw, had an interesting conversation about that with Catija last night...

Actually answering the question is a objective standard that can be and is objectively applied
On the topic of delete votes, having 5 a day is really just too few
>_>

@Magisch that's not actually an experience based answer.

1:24 PM
@Magisch Well, you're working on getting more by using them, that can't be said for everyone :P

The topic of Hamlet's meta question was: Do these answers deserve an UPVOTE.

We're not talking should they be deleted.... we're talking votes....

I have an answer to edit.

Well, am I allowed to vote on subjects I have no experience on?
Because how would I be able to know if an answer is any good

Yes, and that drives people up the wall

You're allowed to vote however you want on whatever you want as long as you don't serially vote for a user
You can literally go "You know, this site sucks, I'm downvoting every single post"

@Magisch that is true, just like you can make up anecdotes in real life. People still use anecdotes and anecdotes are still useful information.

I think there have been people to do that on other sites

1:27 PM
Ok, should I be allowed*

@Magisch no, I don't think you can.

Basically, if you're restricting answering questions to people that have experience, it doesn't make sense to not say something about voting on those answers too

@Mithrandir Wasn't there a MSE about the guy that kept upvoting questions in chronological order on 5 SE sites?

I've gotten votes invalidated for voting for a tag. I think downvoting every single post on a site would count as abuse.

Arguing over votes is really futile anyways, since everything hitting HNQ will get a hurricane of upvotes anyways

1:29 PM
@Magisch I don't know, but I do know that some people who were just voting for posts to get the Electorate badge on every site got their profiles on sites where they weren't actually active deleted

Some people just really have too much time...

Or a script

Yeah there was a stack apps script that would downvote every post as you visit them
Like literally load a question -> downvote on it and all its answers

@JarkoDubbeldam Basically it boils down to 'we prefer answers written from personal experience. So, if you can back up your answer with a personal experience, it's more worthy of an upvote than one that isn't'. And then it's up to you to decide whether or not you want to upvote people soapboxing their personal opinion on how a perfect world should work

I wonder, do you want that as a mod notice stickied to a post?
Or just for meta conscious folk to take that into consideration in future
Because I think like 10 people read meta actively, atm

1:35 PM
I read it

ok 9 people and 1 mithrandir ;D

pff

@Magisch Yeah, and we should be the example... Read that last link I added to my post... We need that back-it-up rule, but to explain to users that their answers would b even better when staved by experience/sources. Leaving such comments might also well ward off some of the massive upvoting that's happening once a question reached HNQ
Because then it won't only be visible on meta

@Tinkeringbell I think you have too much faith in passing HNQ voters
These are the same voters that upvoted the answer that was later flag-deleted as rude and abusive to +54 without a single downvote despite there being an upvoted comment underneath calling it out

the problem is that HNQ people can't dv

1:37 PM
Yeah I know, Shog did his best to undermine that yesterday...

But at the very least we as a community can do our best to counteract those votes... As our community grows, that should be easier....

When you came to our community, that answer was deleted ;)
Btw, we're almost 24 hours without any new questions :(

It's the same problem the workplace has
I just now realized it's already sunday afternoon

ha
you can terrorize the community team again now?

yeah... and we appreciate the help ;) It will probably never get easier, but having read [this](https://interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/1611/1599) I think we need a back-it-up rule.... So we can have a better voting culture as a community.

And f* HNQ for a while. It's fun to be a HNQ question, but it comes with a lot of problems for 'small' communities. Even 'bad' questions can hit HNQ (the racist remark thing!) because the community a.) isn't mature enough b.) isn't sure enough and c.)is easily overridden by the rest of SE
@Magisch Yeah... and I haven't done one bit of embroidery yet, while I had planned on finishing another part of my pattern...

(as you also stated)

3:20 PM
yes, "primarily opinion-based" also very well possible.

4:03 PM
Hmmm.. What makes this an answer to the question, if we also take this into account? OP specifically stated this was about half-brothers/sisters, not their mom. They want to abide by their mom's wishes of not having contact... How does an answer that solely tells them to 'contact mom' become an answer?
And if there is something good in there, why wasn't the answer edited to only focus on that?

4:20 PM
@Tinkeringbell It's simply not an answer to the question ("what are the pitfalls I should watch out for when engaging in conversation with my half-sister and half-brothers?"). Not even a frame challenge, since it is not only not explained why they should reach out to their biological mom instead, the biological mom doesn't want that.
The user answered a question that wasn't asked (like "How to engage my biological mother I've never met before and ask her if I could see my siblings?" or something like that).

@apaul no. I have experience giving feedback to people who have authority over me. Which is what your question asks about. Hence why I answered it.
What I was trying to say with that sentence was that I don't have experience with that particular lgbt issue. Which perhaps was something I could have worded clearer.
If you have related experience and think it's relevant, please share it in answers. I am totally OK with that.
But at the very least be clear what your related experience is so voters/the OP can accurately judge your answer.
The best way to be clear is through anacdotes.

Q: Intrapersonal problem which interferes with interpersonal relationship: on-topic?

VylixHow to overcome nervousness while welcoming English-speaking clients? The OP of this question struggles with speaking with English-speaking clients. Nervousness interferes with how we deal with people, making it on-topic on IPS.SE. The OP shares (many) details, and I think this is answerable. ...

@Hamlet "I have experience giving feedback to people who have authority over me." Who doesn't?

Q: Tell my kids its time to get off of the computer

FireworkI want to be a nice dad, and not have to yell at them to get off there computers. I asked them 2 times already, and they reply "Not right now, dad". They are on it for about 8 hours a day, and that really concerns me. How to I tell my kids to get of the computer right now, without being rude? ...

@mag you can only post a new question on a new site every 40 minutes
So if they posted here for the first time they have to wait 40 minutes before posting on Parenting for the first time

Ah

And I hate getting told that I spend too much time on the computer >.<

@Mithrandir There was a guy giving a talk at my school that made the case that more then 30 minutes a week non work related computer use is considered a dangerous addiction that should be legislated against :p
This is at a vocational school where about half of the students are apprentices in various IT professions

Ouch. 'course, it probably is an addiction... but hey, I learn skills like modding and stuff. I also probably know more than I let on about coding and stuff, because I spend so much time on SE and in Charcoal :P. I even got a Google Code-in 2016 t-shirt.

@AnneDaunted Exactly.

The only documented, studied health risks that I'm aware of that directly result from excessive computer use are weight gain (if you don't do enough exercise) and dry eye syndrome

@ArtOfCode Well, I have anecdotal evidence it will f up studies, friendships, finances and your future live...

@Tinkeringbell My anecdotal evidence speaks against that
My "excessive computer use" enabled me to pursue my career to begin with
Not sure I would have had one of note otherwise

@Magisch If your excessive computer use is focused on a future career that's fine... if it's just gaming, it's bad

@Tinkeringbell I learned programming through gaming
and developed an interest in it through gaming

7:23 PM
@Magisch Okay... the wrong kind of gaming ;) think where you have to buy your progress

Heh

definitely not looking at any particular game developer with a big launch being advertised right about now...

@ArtOfCode I'm so miffed about that I was looking forward to battlefront 2 so much

Q: Why would female persons try to talk to me to through gf?

J. DoeA couple of times of our female friends kept using friendly tone to me, but my gf is puzzled by their behavior saying like "oh do not tell that to him, but you know what.." She wondered and told me, then we decided to ask here. Why would they try to talk to me through her? I mean if they do not ...

But the progression system in this game is the most cancerous f2p laden gambling economy that I've ever seen outside of a mobile game

7:28 PM
@Magisch oh is that coming out soon? I definitely wasn't referring to anything in particular at all...

heh
I don't like being misused as content for the premium players to slash through when I paid upfront for the game
Nor do I like the trend of seemingly every non-indie game these days designing mechanics around how to be just frustrating enough to fleece players for extra cash as much as possible

@apaul true. But a lot less people have experience with anything similar to adoption.
There are topics where 90% of people visiting the site will have experience with it.
But that won't and shouldn't be the case with a substantial amount of questions.

7:54 PM
@Hamlet I was alluding to the idea that the question wasn't so much about offering feedback to a supervisor, but rather about having a rather open discussion about something kinda personal with a supervisor...
... and pointing out how people may inadvertently do that thing that you're trying to get them to not do.

@Tinkeringbell What? Why?

Q: Long Response Times Before Texting Back

Observant93I am a male in my mid-twenties. A female friend of mine sent me a text saying that one of her friends (female) came across my profile and thought that I'm "really cute". I joked around with my friend for a bit and then she sent me a link to her friend's FB profile, suggesting that I add her and g...

Q: How to politely minimise frequency of Mum's requests for visiting

ChrisI've been living with my girlfriend for nearly 2 years now. About once or twice a month, my Mum wants to visit or meet up somewhere. I don't mind doing this occasionally, but she has a habit of asking all the time. If I say I'm busy, she asks about the next day. My girlfriend and I are quite int...

Q: How do I tell my handyman and his crew that they did a bad job?

FireworkMy handyman and his crew came in, to fix a leak, and to replace our toilet. At the start, they did a fantastic job. But then, our kitchen was closed for a month. After they left, our toilet exploded. They came in to fix it, but then it started to leak when they left. How do I tell them that they...
