@ColeValleyGirl Since my history education in high school was the plain vanilla kind and not the advanced course, I didn't have the same grounding in early 20th century history as I do now. I was shocked when I read 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and found out how long rationing went on in the UK after the war. (As I recall, Helene's correspondence with her UK bookseller was in the 1950s, but wait here... )

Helene sent parcels of all kinds of things to the store once she discovered what the current situation was. Food, and things like nylons, anything really that she discovered people needed and that for her, comparatively, weren't a great expense.
Family things: I was started out with some documents which I looked over but then they went into a box. I want to get things out and store them archivally. Wondering now what details I missed when I was only looking at things in a hurry.
@ColeValleyGirl Re: reputation. I am a bit miffed that I can spend an hour answering a question which the asker has shown nearly zero research effort on, and now we both get the same rep points. It's not a big deal if you look at it on a case - by - case basis, but what about the people who only ask questions and never answer any? Sometimes I want to yell did you learn nothing about doing research from reading any of the answers I wrote on your other questions?
People don't know how to do anything anymore except look up names.

@JanMurphy People who ask bad questions only get rep if they get votes -- although I am continually amazed that bad questions do get votes...
And yes, I want to yell -- and probably at the same people. I have to sit on my hands sometimes to stop me saying: what do Google and Wikipedia tell you? Because I am a handy-dandy search engine for you to call on...
