just because you can upload a webp file doesn't mean the server can resize it and support all the needed features

yeah, ImageMagick "supports" webp, but it needs to be built specifically with webp in mind

and technically you could upload webp even without that support, but then features such as cropping, thumbnails, etc might not work

and of course there's that new fangled .php image format that earns you crypto-money

even today, Safari only supports webp if you're using MacOS Big Sur or newer, and even then only partial support was implemented

and only on iOS 14+ which was released September 2020

likewise AVIF was meant to do the same thing webp but better but isn't supported as widely, and JPEG XL is meant to replace webp too, but no browsers currently supports it, nm server-side
