12:37 PM
I just noticed that after reaching 3k rep, my flags aren't recorded anymore. Is that deliberate?

12:51 PM
you can just vote, no need to flag

click the "close" link

i was just wondering about the number of flags
hmm thinking of flagging as "needs moderate attention"

hmmm, no idea, the mechanics of the site are mostly magic for me (and I like it that way most of the time)

seems like when you reach 3k rep and can vote for close directly, your close flags aren't recorded anymore
Do you think it's a good idea to define the entire design's sizes based on vw or %?
I want my design to look same from 1366 px wide to infinite

12:56 PM
great question for SO

It really depends ;)

hey kraft, for example?

What are we talking about? Text sizes? Container sizes? Image Sizes? Why only one, you can mix and match...

I have different rules for sizes below 1366, for mobiles. And i'm trying to give the same look when it comes to large screens
everything
padding, font size, margin

Well I would say there isn't one definite answer for everything.

12:58 PM
im developing it on a 1366px monitor, and trying to use calc(X * (100vw / 1366 ) )
to make everything look just like on my monitor

This is not possible.

and why is that?

You have too many variables: Physical screen size, resolution, aspect ratio, orientation, color depth,...

what? What does color depth got to do with a padding? :D

I'd go "content out". Make a design, ideally mobile (e.g. one-column) first and then try to fix stuff when it doesn't work for certain sizes, orientations,...

1:01 PM
for example if the padding is 10px, it would be calc (10 * (100vw / 1366 ) )
i tested on some displays and it works, just want to know about the possible issues?

Probably not with the padding, but it might even. For example something that is easily distinguished by color on screen (e.g. two buttons next to each other) might need more spacing to make them work on a black&white screen (like an e-book reader)
Responsive design done right is complicated.
And there is no silver bullets.

i actually don't think it can be done "right". it always sucks somewhere :P

So answering that question in a void is impossible. It really depends on your content, design, target audience,...

there might be a 5" monitor with a resolution of 8k. not my problem :P
i would assume sacrifices have to be made in web designs. i just gave up on optimizing the code for IE. Added a modal to offer downloading other browsers.

Well my 5 inch phone has a higher resolution than one of my 19 inch monitors.

1:06 PM
I decided responsive design by itself is worthless. It is not only screen sizes, different devices are just being used in different times and different ways

Steve jobs' power!

There is no perfect solution. You're just looking for the best compromise for your particular audience.

shouldn't there be a framework for this kinda stuff?

You're still looking for a silver bullet which doesn't exist. The framework is HTML and CSS.

and JS when needed to adjust dynamically

1:08 PM
well i asked 'shouldn't there'

... as a last resort only in case of classic websites (in contrast to web apps)

how much time i wasted to optimize this on different sizes, since the design is too crowdish.
let's just set the width to 1000 pixel and add whitespace for higher res! :)

Well than probably worth revisiting the overall design instead of trying to duct-tape over it with more media queries ;)

just if we had a value that depends on the inch... not the res.

If this is a plain blogpost for example this can actually be a viable solution. Texts only gets harder to read if lines get longer than ~90 characters. So just add whitespace from there.

1 hour later…
2:40 PM
@MarkKaplun there is one tied into the developer plugin

anyone else can share his opinion about responsive design please? :)

where does the chat start?? I do a lot of responsive design. I typically build everything in Bootstrap then I use an OSA script in BBEdit to build a beginning structure of my theme then go from there
since I started as a designer and love web I do agree with the mobile first approach which typically means isolating down what a site should mainly focus on at the mobile level then build upon. When isolating down to that level you can determine what you really need and what you can add later on when size gets larger. Also helps to give a client a grading scale of what they deem valuable so you can have that included.
if that is what you're asking =P

hey! i see you are on your mod account!
it's a custom css i'm writing
but since the visitors may use large screens like < 2400px wide, i thought i should do it relatively

@JackJohansson then you need to weigh in the time to develop and debug VS use a pre-existing solution. All depends on what your intended goal is really
@JackJohansson from my point of view that would depend on what the design calls for really.

i was asked this question a lot of time, but i don't know what you mean by "design calls"

2:52 PM
@JackJohansson can you expand on that?

expand?
like resize?

no expand on "design calls"
oh, what the design of the site calls for, meaning what's the flow

i was asking generally. like the same when you say "generally don;t modify wp core files"
so, is it generally ok to define on elements based on vw and %? that's the question.

I mostly use em and rem

you know, my theme has a lot of elements. It looks fine on mobile, and screens below 1440. but when it's on a 2560px monitor, then i have to figure a way to fix the elements being small
but em doesn't increase by display size

2:58 PM
true
would be hard to answer without seeing the whole project

i see that you are a mod on UI design, so i assume u are familiar with these kind of stuff , more than others :)

i'll give a link after i updated some CSS, if you had a few seconds to take an overall look :)

right now I'm looking for a way to tap into the default tag metabox to add a message, lol

:D
did you ask a question?
shouldn't be hard

3:01 PM
still researching but ive only found how to modify the name

will be happy to help if u explain the issue

my big thing with WP is I like to see what I can modify to make it custom. I wanted to add a message right before the input area of the default tag metabox

this might probably solve it

Q: Changing Admin Menu Labels

AdamI have spent the last day using the functions.php file to fully customize WordPress for my client sites. I am amazed at how much I have been able to accomplish and how much easier it will make things for my clients. I have removed certain menu items for users that are not logged in as an admin. ...

thought about even adding default tags to the metabox but wanted to research more

Note Ivan's answer

3:05 PM
dang those are old
that's for the labels I want to modify the actual metabox

what i do when i cant find a solution is, to search using notepad++ through core files, find the original function and then step back to find the first filter

@JackJohansson that's not a bad idea

worked for me when i was finding a way to organize the uploads :P

3:26 PM
ya writing the question now

1 hour later…
4:34 PM
Ayeeee 10k rep. Finally I get mod tools!
Just another 10k and I can be a trusted user :)

5:05 PM
@Howdy_McGee congrats but dont you already have mod POWER?? lol
@kraftner this is sooooo true

5 hours later…
10:14 PM
@Howdy_McGee I just wanted to congratulate you after voting your answer! congratz! :D
Also i trust you already! I can give you my cookies and i trust you not to eat them until i get back.
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ Why complicated? Just add width: auto to every element :) :D

@JackJohansson lol let me know how that goes when rolled out

everything looks like its natural state... auto. Although some of their natural states are not quite interesting.

why does error handling have to be 10x more code then executable code

Nice question. Unfortunately has no answer.
modular programming should be taken seriously more often.

wonder how many people actually read the README files when pulling code from Github.

10:28 PM
as if anyone reads :)
It became even a meme

copy paste; copy paste!!! lol

Thank goodness they can't cut paste!
What is the latest version of photoshop evil one? if you know.

cc2017
its crap and slow

i mean the number... mine is 14

still revert to using cc2014 because Im familiar with the object model and working with other adobe applications
ya, that would be CC2014 which is CC14, they changed it

10:33 PM
so you recommend that i stick to cc14?

well you have the creative cloud so I thought they forced everyone to have the latest unless you go through the loop hole or third party purchase

i don't let any app automatically update, except windows itself

hey! you have mac?

ya, switched to mac 6 years ago and its sooooooo much better then PC. I'll test windows when they complete their Unix integration unless they try to do something proprietary to screw that up

10:37 PM
I like the animation on windows 7 when you minimize the window. can't leave this. sorry.
The damn windows 10 is even worse than win vista

each their own really. Just do a lot of terminal stuff so I went from Windows to Windows with a virtual of Ubuntu then just pure Mac after so many issues with virtualization

why not just install ubuntu?

I have a prod instance with Ubuntu now but I dont really need it because I can mostly do everything on the Mac

Idk, i feel like i'm home, when i'm on windows. Feels like in a desert when on linux or mac :D

so you dont regex, sed, bash, python or perl often?

10:42 PM
not often, more like never.
can't focus on two different stuff, right now focusing on php dev. abandoned everything else. language, electronics, even games. like a single core CPU.

here is an example of web scraping with AppleScript: macscripter.net/viewtopic.php?id=26774
@JackJohansson ya I really wish I could spend more time advancing my PHP knowledge. I'd love to dive into it solely but I cant

I used something like this for scrapping IMDB, but found it it's against their term of service
moved to TMDB afterward

11:05 PM
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ LOL this question!
437
Q: GitHub satanically messing with my README

MD XFMy GitHub repository has nothing but a readme in it. In this readme, locally I wrote this: Factoids: - There are about six different ways to do everything in Forked. - There are actually six different ways to enter loops. - There are six directionals and six I/O commands. - 666. ha. Emphas...

11:42 PM
@DᴀʀᴛʜVᴀᴅᴇʀ This is what you were talking about :)
