12:32 AM
this site is a lifesaver, rubular.com

@Wyck have you seen this chrome app‌?

@bungeshea ha no, but I just installed it:)

1:19 AM
works great , now if only someone made an automated regex from selected text option

6 hours later…
programming ftw

7:38 AM
Are there any limitations on How we name our wordpress theme?

Twenty Fifteen is sub-optimal

How do you name your wordpress theme?

I don’t have a fixed naming scheme. For clients I use the company name

8:44 AM
@Rarst cult?

cult how? :)

homepage surely looks like one. A programmers cult. not bad.. :)

cults are more subtle :)

..and my eyes hurt
is there any way (wp way) to process shortcode inside captions without using regex?
trying to use shortcodes inside alt, title tag and caption on images..

isn't that part of content? or you are processing images outside of it?

9:00 AM
yes, part of content? but it seems [caption] don't use do_shortcode() because if i add a shortcode on alt or title tag it doesn't process

ah, nested shortcodes... it's too before tea for that :)

:)

@Sisir I might be misunderstanding you but would something like echo apply_filters( 'the_content', '[caption]'); help?

okey more observation: [caption]<a href=""><img alt="[shortcode]" title="[shortcode]"></a> Caption Text [shortcode][/caption]

1. shortcode inside alt and title processed.
2. Caption Text doesn't
might be good for a trac ticket..
@userabuser how does it work? Didn't knew I can apply a shortcode..

9:24 AM
@Rarst Wait you're awake and its before tea? Does not compute.... :)

I can't make tea asleep

@Rarst There's at most a 10 minute window between awakeness and tea :)

that makes incorrect assumption I am functional imemdiately after awakening

@userabuser Surely do_shortcode if anything?
@Rarst You need a teasmaid then

tea maker with overnight timer would probably do...
I am putting this on the list of the reasons I might need a job.

9:33 AM
wouldn't a simple 10$ timer on the wall socket do it?

to plug what into it?

electrical water boiler

it won't pour by itself

Samova?

Solar is the future

9:35 AM
samovar? too old timey :)

then programm a fucking arduino and some servos :)

don't grow my list of things I need job for

lolz I can so imagine your automated kitchen setup

I am low tech. I read charming story about programmer who dumped something like couple dozen grand on super kitchen. then it caught fire and went up in flames.

9:39 AM
can we make trac urls to be stand out in wpse chat? Like twitter urls?

some years ago I visited a friend who lives in a valley. took me some time to get there, so we drank something and I slept on the couch. In the morning his automated coffee machine woke us with playing some nice MP3 and the whole flat smelled like fresh rosted beans. won't forget that ever :)
@Rarst insurance?

+1 for coffee! don't like tea

@kaiser we are still a little wild about that

over here you won't even be able to rent a flat without insurance on it. law forces you to have it.

9:45 AM
most people here don't even have medical insurance (just started to penetrate), much less so no apartments

In germany you are forced by law to have medical insurance ...

Not that everybody has one...
...in Germany.
...or Austria.
fucking politics.
just shared by Vienna Public Transport Lines. Reason why one line currently is blocked 8)

@kaiser ummm ... n1.

we don't have any law for insurance. probably 100 years behind..

@Sisir ... or 100 years ahead.

9:52 AM
one of the reason why living is require less money.. but you are doomed if bad medical issues arise..

@kaiser Wow. That's a good reason...
We might have too many leaves

People are arguing that they should give him a free annual ticket :)

10:13 AM
ah.. can't wait for football season to start :)

Q: Why is voting on questions and answers anonymous?

speedypancakeWordpress Answers requires users to sign-in before answering a question or leaving a comment. But voting on questions is anonymous. Why is that?

11:15 AM
Just bought WCEU tickets.

@kaiser you still getting an apartment for the weekend?

Can tell you in some hours. First did never respond to various mails. Trying to find something else that allows us to stuff more people into it :)
currently searching flight. after that: appartment.

I am so staying in the hotel. nothing can go wrong with this trip.

was this a prerequisite to getting the visa?

kind of :) I might get asked for hotel reservation to enter the country and hotel registers your stay with authorities, etc
I did have to submit my hotel reservation for the visa

11:24 AM
hm. we're trying to get something from private. not sure how/if that would be possible.

so if it's maybe / maybe not / maybe something with apartment, I think I'd prefer to play it safe with my visa crap

understandable.
I'm just not sure because I don't know your process and yet we haven't something fix. Just trying to nail things down. Then I can go and investigate further if you're telling me your prerequisites.

I think I'll just go with hotel so it doesn't hang over my head. it's not like where one passes out for the night will affect the program much, right :)

don't think you'll be passing out, tea parties go into the early hours of the morning

I need my sleep

11:29 AM
@Rarst you need earl gray

So far we're trying to find something where 6 ppl fit in. not sure what that mens in "beds"... would be fun to see @toscho and @Rarst sharing a queen size bed :D

...hotel is my final decision

hehe

@kaiser instead of leaving after dinner mint on your pillow, toscho will leave you an answer to your WPSE question, probably a downvote too.

I'll try to get something with cats :)

11:35 AM
<3

1 hour later…
12:57 PM
Ok, flights are booked as well. Awaiting response from the host, then we can talk further.

when are you arriving?

4th
pretty early on 4th in Adam
leaving from Adam on 7th in the evening

I am landing (hopefully :) 8am friday

Adam?

Schiphol

1:09 PM
Damnit. Booking got declined...

tickets or apartment?

apartment
damnit, damnit, damnit

how early are you arriving? I want company for the train or I will end up lost in Europe

Very early. Guess close to your time

I plan to arrive Friday, probably in Schipol too

1:11 PM
Think I'll be able to hold your hand, @Rarst :)

@kaiser can we get a photo of that? For meta if anybody says we're not a caring community

photo of me holding @Rarst hand? Sure. Even poster print will be available :)

1:25 PM
Hm. No idea where to get an apartment now...

1:47 PM
@Rarst =o what's wrong with hand holding?
I do it all the time

@TomJNowell me too. but then again, i have 2 kids age 5 and under.

2:07 PM
make sure you turn up the volume. pretty hilarious.

What do you use? px or em

hi @mohit - who are you asking what?

question is about em and px used in css.

google?

2:23 PM

that's 6 years old...

I just wanted to know what you guys use to set font for your website?

i use both, depends on the situation
also @kaiser your result gave me a warning about German Cookies!
> Cookies helfen uns bei der Bereitstellung unserer Dienste. Durch die Nutzung unserer Dienste erklären Sie sich damit einverstanden, dass wir Cookies setzen.

@GhostToast German privacy law note from Google. They're using Cookies. Surprise, surprise :)

2:33 PM
yea no kidding. what doesnt google know about me i wonder
between gmail, google voice, android phone...

@Mohit it looks like you're asking for a nice simple answer where none is to be found

@StephenHarris Genius. Thank's for sharing.

connection out for an hour...

2:38 PM
 * Match any alfanumeric
ok...

PhpStorm getting SSH client? blog.jetbrains.com/phpstorm/2013/08/… yaaaaaay, I don't like putty/kitty much
on other hand MC probably won't work in it

I'm trying to do this:
remove_action('acf/input/admin_head', array(new acf_input(), 'input_admin_head'));
... but it doesn't work. Do I need to pass the same instance of the class to remove_action that was used to add the action? ... I can't get it to work ... :-(

@s1lv3r yes to instance

Ah that sucks. The plugin just does this: new acf_input(); ... so it doesn't save the instance at all. No chance to do it without hacking the plugin code then, or am I wrong?

@TomJNowell nice article

2:48 PM
@Rarst no tabs? I know there's screen but its not quite the same

@s1lv3r work on hook array directly
@TomJNowell more of a craptastic profile management, with bad UI for save/restore and no way to set up colors globally

@s1lv3r take a look at @toscho blog and his WP.SE answers on this topic. The WPKrauts article might help as well

@s1lv3r there is also remove_all_actions()

which will so bring you into hell

why?

2:52 PM
Because normally someone will overlook some callback, remove it, notice it a week later and won't be able to tell why the heck stuff isn't working. Then you're in the situation to debug it and won't be able to know where exactly it happens :)
Well, you could add a notice to shutdown that is wrapped around current_user_can( 'manage_options' ).

how is that different from removing callback normally? this is not general use hook, this is some plugin-specific-namespaced-stuff

Because you never know what exactly you're removing. Just emptying complete subarray. Single remove targets something, this one not.

sometimes fire is the answer

people who are trying to kick their own asses are likely the same guys who try to lick their own ellbows.

@Rarst I prefer the cleansing tsunami of shame

2:57 PM
I mean it's called callback hell, how isn't fire appropriate? :)

Getting the right stuff with npm or bower is a real challenge... oida!

@Rarst remove_all_actions() did work like a charm (for now ...). Thank's.

@s1lv3r var_dump( $GLOBALS['wp_filters'][ current_filter() ] )

@kaiser Yeah, seems like that under this circumstances there is only the filter attached which I want to remove anyway ...
But I get, when you say that remove_all_actions() can be evil ...

only target this specific one.
If you rely on other filters who run previously, you can even use has_filter() checks upfront and use remove_filter( current_filter(), __FUNCTION__ ); inside your callback, so it doesn't fire a second time per accident.

3:07 PM
I can't remove it with remove_action() ... could only directly modify the hook array as pointed out by @Rarst ... do you think that's safer?

new wp_query() vs Wp_Query() vs wp_Query() vs etc... any thoughts? doesn't seem to make any difference in my version of PHP. any hangups in other versions? any rationale behind this?

@GhostToast just use the form it was defined in
it's case insensitive in general, but you never know what edge case will bite you where it is

@rarst in /includes/query.php its kind of all over the place
but
i guess as a class it is WP_Query
on line 831

maybe you are confusing class name with global, which is $wp_query ?

i'm specifically referring to the anonymity of being about to call $loop = new WP_QUERY(); with case insensitivity

3:16 PM
lost me

do all functions all you to call them up with case insensitivity? all classes?
example: public class fooBar() { blah }

consult manual :)

$foo = new Foobar();

A: Why are functions and methods in PHP case-insensitive?

Shailesh KumarLet me quote from Interview – PHP’s Creator, Rasmus Lerdorf The first version of PHP was a simple set of tools that I put together for my Website and for a couple of projects. One tool did some fancy hit logging to an mSQL database, another acted as a form data interpreter. I ended up with ab...

i like this, by Rasmus:
> "I'm definitely not a good programmer, in terms of following strict coding rules or standards, but I can say that if you rely on case sensitivity to recognize one function name from another, you're in kind of serious trouble!" - Rasmus

@s1lv3r show the dump from the array
25
A: How to remove a filter that is an anonymous object?

toschoThat’s a very good question. It goes down to the dark heart of the plugin API and best programming practices. For the following answer I created a simple plugin to illustrate the problem with easy to read code. <?php # -*- coding: utf-8 -*- /* Plugin Name: Anonymous OOP Action */ if ( ! class_...

@TomJNowell Did you ever finish your Scraper for the official repo?

3:34 PM
@kaiser Interesting. Interesting. That seems to be a cool solution. Actually I just realized that $wp_filter has 3 references to this function for "acf/input/admin_head" with different params ... I'm puzzled.

I love that bit of the answer: "It goes down to the dark heart of the plugin API..." @toscho @kaiser

@GhostToast Jeah, ... I always like the answer where you really learn something about some internals you haven't heard of before.

@s1lv3r you hang out here a lot, yet have only one question asked :)

@GhostToast I ask my questions here in chat. Where the kool guys hang out. :-)

yea. i guess i do too now. don't want to inflate the rep economy!

3:49 PM
@GhostToast I guess that's not the idea of the whole stackexchange network, but my question most times just are about a single line of code ... the only one question you mentioned was about the project I'm still struggling with. ;-)

@s1lv3r well. it's all good. i have had questions migrate from chat to the actual board too, and vice versa

4:01 PM
@kaiser time constraints conspired against me

@TomJNowell how far did you get?

probs wouldnt take too much time to do again, the bulk of the work was in taking the output and presenting it which I never got around to
so I just did WP Core for my talk

what I'm searching for is a list of the most common scripts and styles used.

oooh
so rank .css and .js files found by filename occurrence?
ofc that wont account for wp_enqueue or register

yes. wanted to get on that with wpguidelines.com for a loooong time :)
@TomJNowell basically it would be searching for exactly that.
But no idea how to go on that.
@TomJNowell How did you start obtaining all the repos as list?

4:05 PM
I didnt, i let someone who did it before me and put it on github happily clone itself onto my local drive

link?

it'll take a while to pull it all down, give it around 10GB of breathing space to do its thing

4:35 PM
Hm. Not sure if I should do that now. Just too hot and Laptop already walking the edge.... :/

Isn't there an API for the media manager? I don't see one listed in the WordPress APIs

5:09 PM
@MarkDavidson When you're doing edits, then please do a whole edit: Tags, title, MarkUp, etc. Single word edits will get rejected as "too minor". If you got questions just enter "The Loop"-Chatroom and we'll happily explain and help further.

Guess I'll just do it the hard way, and inspect core WP files for examples

6:04 PM
wordpress.org hosted themes need GPL compliant graphics/images, correct?

6:15 PM
@Wyck yes

Wow looking into updating an open source CMS, get directed to a forum post with user supplied update scripts..hello 2006

we take WP updates for granted :)

6:31 PM
exactly, this is a nightmare in terms of cost
> step 3 "This script includes a STEP-BY-STEP readme file. Follow it exactly!"
yay
@Rarst hmm my new script gets 1911 functions from WP, I'm still off from queryposts's 1918, 7 mystery functions

I probably include something explicitlym not all of admin is loaded even in admin

include dirname(__FILE__) . '/wp-blog-header.php';
require_once(ABSPATH . 'wp-admin/includes/admin.php');
is what I use

I am not looking at my code. it will do nothing good to my mood.

no animated gifs inline in chat

6:39 PM
ha no worries I can live without 7 functions

@Rarst that might feel you better..

7:20 PM
I think it's a good sign when a theme shop's homepage has a fatal error, presslayer.com

7:56 PM
@Wyck ... also always nice to see that they really care about security and have display_errors turned On on a live server. :-P
But atleast they inform their customers in detail what error they are currently having. So +1 for information politics. :-P

8:17 PM
What's everyones take on Genesis?

@Wyck lol..… trying to redeclare core functions

@MichaelEcklund an interesting band, bit of a bump when they switched lead singers, the spitting image references make for good videos

> I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual.

@MichaelEcklund I have always been more into Iron Maiden.

oh lol guys guys guys. Meant the framework? haha

8:24 PM
what no one got my quote..?

Genesis Framework

@Wyck American Psycho? Never seen/read that one.

@s1lv3r well now you have something to watch tonight, geat movie:) (never read book)
don't watch it with the kids though

@Wyck The scene from your youtube link is so lool.

8:39 PM
@MichaelEcklund Never used it so I don't really have an opinion. Actually I have never felt the need to have a theme framework at all - isn't that all marketing?!

Yoast uses it so apparently not

hmm are there any good distributed build systems around?

@MichaelEcklund Yeah and they have some nice references on their site (Matt, Mark Jaquith ...).

@MichaelEcklund I use it on one of my sites that I never touch, it seems well written and has some decent theme hooks.
it does do things a bit wierd though, which I really didn't like but I didnt spend much time with it

What's a weird example?

8:44 PM
the front page was all widgets and did not have a normal loop

@Wyck So no bloat? I like to use boilerplate themes for having full control about what's going on ....

but maybe that was the child theme I was using
let me look I have it lying around here
oh ya it uses a lot of it's own code so it will take a while to learn which is annoying, for example: pastebin.com/mMAa98qp

@TomJNowell we use Bamboo at work. But it's a pretty huge project to get into it.

code sample is from genesis 1.5 which is old I think ^

@Wyck I see. A lot of custom functions.

8:49 PM
yup, its a full framework

hmmmm so where is the actual benefit? ... can't find a real one on their page besides the normal stuff (SEO, security ...) ...

I'm just wondering if it's worth learning / using. Will it actually save time or improve efficiency?

they have lots of theme hooks, which wordpress doesnt have
above loop, below loop, above header, that type of stuff
look at thier docs and decide if you like the hooks

9:14 PM
Anyone checkout Gravity Forms Easter Egg feature regarding Entries?

no.
Something funny?

when viewing entries, you can "select all", which gives you option to select literally all of them, rather than just "all" on this page. (admin panel like any other post type)
kind of nice for bulk actions, not limited to how many are on that current page

Sounds more like a bug. :P

it is intentional
and optional
i would actually like to see that more. if you have gravity forms, you should update and take a look
All 20 entries on this page are selected. Select all 56 entries.
where "select all 56 entries" is a link
upon clicking it, an option to "clear selection" shows up there as a link

I always was at the Contact Form 7 side. :P

9:17 PM
i found that to be a bit tedious. used to use it back in the day, still maintain it a few places

Tedious? You mean in the setup process of the forms?

yes

@Wyck Whats you opinion about using .tpl templates for separating PHP and HTML?

@MichaelEcklund You mean like in using an template engine like Smarty as seperator between those two worlds?

yeah.. that concept. except, not using smarty.

9:19 PM
@GhostToast hmmm ... yeah, that sucks a bit when you have large forms. Maybe I should have a look at gravity forms.

@s1lv3r yea man. plus it had conditional logic that can be a godsend.
take for example a signup form that's for some weekend golf outing. an option "will you be attending dinner?"
boom. opens up a whole section of options then. and can easily tie this stuff into paypal

@GhostToast Will have a look at it for sure. ;-)

can also dynamically hook into pre and post form, pre post submission, pre post paypal IPN handshake...
i use it in quite a few membership based sites to create user meta from field forms

@MichaelEcklund You didn't ask me, but in my opinion it's absolutely needed if you plan to build something larger.
@GhostToast Interesting stuff for sure. Will keep this in mind.
(for next projekt). :-)

yea. i'm sure i could signup for a referral account. prob should for as much as i recommend it. but, it's seriously worth it. cant remember dev license cost. maybe $200 initially, $100 to renew. i pay for it personally, and we also have a license at my work. saves me so many hours of work that its def worth it.

9:25 PM
@s1lv3r I just recently start doing that with my plugins. My code is way more organized, not to mention, I'm able to reuse some of the templates numerous times. It has also made it incredibly easy to update the template, without accidentally screwing up the template output.

@GhostToast Yeah. Somehow most projects come down to do doing some layout, CPT stuff and forms. :-P

great way to add meta boxes to post types, gives me a lot of control. have never tried a "true" plugin

@MichaelEcklund I honestly don't get why that was never introduced to wp-admin. Saves so much time.

I was only asking because I NEVER see anyone doing that.
Just wondering if there is reasoning why no one does it that way.

@MichaelEcklund All the projects I have seen in the last years that used a framework (be at Zend, Symfony ...) also used a template engine. I guess it's just WordPress.
@GhostToast Arrrff should have known of this plugin a week ago. Just building my own form class based on Advanced Custom Fields for a project ... thank's for the link anyway.

9:38 PM
@s1lv3r sure. you owe me two plugin recommendations in future :)

@GhostToast Ahh ... I'm not that versed in that topic, but if you have any other problem I'm here in chat to help. ;-)

1 hour later…
10:43 PM
@s1lv3r ah that's a centralised server thing, I was thinking more a distributed system where the peoples machines themselves did all the work, p2p style

1 hour later…
11:44 PM
went with jqvmap.com for simple map in the end
