12:00 AM
Yikes.

Party Time!

It's better than my old job - I used to play it at the piano. Now I just wave a 4/4 pattern :)
PARTY TIME

It's good that we cracked 1K users before the party too.

If only Sergiy Kolo was here.

Double celebration

12:00 AM
Yes

You no longer do spreadsheets?

I still do, but I thought it not very good for the party mood.

@Downgoat Welcome! :)

Congrats on Public Beta CSE! :D

12:03 AM
Depends on the spreadsheets ;-)
Thanks, @Downgoat!

Just to preserve the stats.

That's a better launch than PPCG so far.

100% answered, wow!

What's PPCG?

@BenI. programming puzzles and code golf

12:04 AM
It's an SE site

Us codegolfers, the place SE likes to forget about.

OH - I did a codegolf problem. I got the best answer in Java.

PPCG never got a site design. I hope you guys do

It was, like, 200x the size of most of the other answers ;-)

12:05 AM
@BenI. Sounds like Java to me

Codegolf is great for a hackathon if you're short on ideas.

@ATaco You should show these guys IAT

I've visited PPCG but not participated.

I participated on PPCG before I knew it existed except I posted my answers on SO instead :P

I do codegolf with my students on one lab as extra credit - I promise an A for the entire marking term if anyone beats me.

12:06 AM
Nice

I sometimes get cryptic in my Perl code but never to the level needed for PPCG

@BenI. Are you sure they won't cheat on PPCG?

One girl once got within 8 characters of me but... those last 8 characters are really hard to optimize out!

Personally I feel it should be discouraged on a professional level, golfing often means less efficient code.

@BenI. What programming language do you use to teach?

12:07 AM
I wonder if The wise geek will want to join.

@Mendeleev So far, my prompt hasn't appeared there ;-)

:)

@ATaco opls what if you're in machine code and less instruction obviously always mean faster :P

@Downgoat ...

@Downgoat still iterative vs recursive code

12:07 AM
@Downgoat if you're in machine code, you need to consider your life choices and switch to python =P

nm machine code
@heather No

@heather oh god no

No python please.

why? python is the best

^^ python is as bad as CS teacher say to use double for currency

12:08 AM
Because Ruby
Well

I feel Python's a good language for teaching and learning concepts of programming in an environment actually used by coders.

It's good for learners and it has a huge community

@Mendeleev I admittedly have never used ruby.

@Mendeleev Dude why?

12:09 AM
@ATaco I have found once people learn python they get stuck and have hard time learning other languages and expanding beyond python

I prefer Ruby because the language is better structured IMO and I like their paradigm more (everything is an object)

@Downgoat I learnt mostly on Lua, that was hard to overcome.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 _________idk_________ why :P

heh

I have made a solemn oath before the lord in heaven, here on this very sword, to never enter into a programming language holy war.

12:09 AM
I'm not debating what language others should use. I'm explaining why I prefer a certain programming language

I ... cast myself upon this sword.

@Mendeleev One?

@Downgoat not really - I do mainly python because it's most useful for my purposes (numpy) but I do stuff with C and other languages - I always like playing with other languages.

If I had the time, I'd learn all of them. More tools in the chest means better chance of having the best one for the job

@heather Ruby is really neat
It lets you do things like 5.times { print "Hello!\n" }

12:11 AM
So... our party has been crashed by PPCG?

@Mendeleev, yeah, I need to try it, it's been on my list. Maybe this summer I'll finally get to it and Lisp.

Because I gotta say... this is awesome.

And "hello world".upcase

@Mendeleev opls cheddar is golfier: |>5=>->print"Hello"

I invited PPCG to come congratulate CSE, and pretty unsurprisingly we started talking about applications of programming languages.

12:12 AM
@Downgoat Ruby: $><<"Hello\n"*5

So how can we use Ruby or Python to market CSE?

@Mendeleev Cheddar: ->"Hello"*5

@Mendeleev oh, come on, that could be done with print("Hello!\n"*5) in python.

As I said, Python is a great language for basic and clear teaching of programming concepts.

@Gypsy use python to send emails to everyone on a mailing list =)

12:12 AM
@heather I'm demonstrating that everything, even integer literals is an object and has methods

@ATaco opls python classes are an abomination

@ATaco This is true.

I'm in the USA, gotta worry about CANSPAM

@Downgoat Classes in functional languages are always abominations.

@ATaco python is like 0% functional (counter example: Cheddar, VSL)

12:13 AM
@Mendeleev ah, I see, I misunderstood the point of that line =)

@heather SE chat has built in reply functionality that lets you see which message you're replying to. just hover over it and press the arrow on the right. it really makes it much clearer

@Mendeleev Okay, thanks.

There's also a lot of userscripts made by @ATaco to enhance SE chat.

^ I highly reccomend the one that has a macro for: BORK ALERT 🚨 BORK ALERT 🚨 BORK ALERT

I have no intentions to bring that madness here.

12:14 AM
There's even one that lets you see people who are typing (that have the userscript) sort of like Discord

@Downgoat link please =)

@ATaco I mean mostly useful things like the preview and I am Typing

Huh, I earned a solid upvote on codegolf. 111 points. I didn't remember getting any votes :P

12:15 AM
that repository has a whole ton more userscripts you can use, 10/10 very useful

Just don't get Team Spirit ;)

Got a userscript for giving an audio alert for new posts in a monitored stack?

By the way, I am Typing [warning: direct userscript link] is a really cool thing

I suppose a party doesn't need to be ontopic, but this is rather derailed.

I tried

12:17 AM
> General discussion

well, we can always re-rail it, if we want.

Just like TNB :P

TNB is derailed 100% of the time.
I think we as a community just derail things.

TNB == 19th byte ?

TNB = the nineteenth byte?

12:18 AM
@ATaco excuse me we have had very productive train conversations

@Gypsy @heather Yes

there was even that one with the train laying its own tracks
that is like opposite of derailing :P

@Downgoat Most of my conversations with trains is spent dodging the light at the end of the tunnel

@Downgoat There was also the challenge Ruby on Rails (about a railway engineer named Ruby)

wait what python does hoisting oh god why

12:19 AM
What are some topics educators find particularly difficult to explain to students?

Please define hoisting

OK I think I'm heading off to bed. Tomorrow is another day. But let me just give one more
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah!!

@Mendeleev two-pass scope generation without doing the fancy scope inheritance stuff VSL does

We made it :D
G'night, folks!

@ATaco pointers, stacks, objects, recursion, code-style, best practices.

12:20 AM
@BenI. improved: WE GOAT TO PUBLIC BETA!! :D

@BenI. good night - and thanks for all the hard work you've put in!

@Downgoat What is two pass scope generation?

@Mendeleev uh brb pulling up docs

@heather very nice comment in meta - the physics policy is a really good model

12:22 AM
@ATaco I don't know about educator -> student, but in terms of nerdy friend -> slightly less nerdy friend - explaining why programming is much more fun than social interaction =P

@heather Ah, I've tried many years doing that. They never seem to byte.

heheh

@heather social interaction has the problem where you have to explain how you can talk when you're a goat

We will now pause for a commercial break.
Support these proposal:
86
Technical Communication

Proposed Q&A site for technical writers, content developers, engineers, scientists, and other professionals involved in the process of creating assets for documentation, education, and presentations of technical subjects.

Currently in definition.

:38231905 Cute.

Users of Virtual Reality gear often care about the Hardware as much as the Software, meaning it can't be covered by either SU or Arcade.

12:27 AM
supporting first two, not third - let me take a look at that one.

@ATaco does this encompass development for VR and algorithms?

Apparently.

e.g.: "What are approaches to integrating 3D geolocation points effectively with AR"

I'm on both of first two already.

12:28 AM
area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/102381/weapons I am advising my own proposal here.

The current definition does include such discussion.

Likely to be worthless on the last anyway.

@ATaco :(

@Downgoat Why the :(?

Ok we will now go back to our scheduled program.

12:29 AM
@ATaco you said the current definition of VR/AR does not include my quetion

I'd think you'd have to support *ware for VR, so often they're all tied together.

@Downgoat Read again, I said does.

oh :| this is why i am fail english class

VR Gear takes a surprising amount of maintenance.

@HenryWHHackv2.0 actually, not quite yet, I have one more proposal to advertise:

12:31 AM
@ATaco do i loose point if my porpoised question is downvote?

62
Quantum Computing

@heather It looks like your basic numerals need refreshing 1 != 2

kenorb ;)

@GypsySpellweaver yeah, I thought of the second one after I posted =)

12:32 AM
this is a really good quetsion you guys/gals should totally upvote: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/102228/… :)

I used my 5 upvotes already.

If only RC ♦ was here.

What would he do?

this project on dna information storage is making me ask crazy questions that google will not enlighten me on.

12:40 AM
@heather Is that from bioinfomatics?

i might need to head to a university library or something to read some of the papers that are popping up in search results (behind a paywall)
@GypsySpellweaver is what from bioinformatics? the project?

Hate paywalls, That's why I'm in OpenData
the DNS info storage.
If it's not from there, maybe go there in search of more info

oh, ask on bioinformatics the site?

@heather If it fits, yes

the questions aren't really about the actual encoding of the data, but about the engineering challenges behind dna synthesis.
but thank you =)

12:43 AM
It's in public beta, so they might need help with definition still. Worst they can do is close the question

well, this particular question isn't on-topic there at all - "does a photosensor exist that is sensitive enough to detect a 1.3 nanometer molecule passing in front of it?" - probably more on topic on engineering, or maybe electrical engineering.
or maybe physics, I dunno which yet.

Not likely on topic for bioinfomatics, no. Others, who knows.

HI everyone
is anyone here works on flask and know dir structure?

So much for bed. I can't leave y'all
Mostly it's because my wife is on the phone with a friend having a small crisis, so I'm still here :)

good night everyone =)

12:57 AM
NN, heather

congrats on public beta!

Oh, hey! I am 6 points away from 3k rep.

@heather Yes!

Ben congrats

For the site? That's for everyone. :)
For 3k? I don't have it yet. But I'll take an almost 'gratz

12:59 AM
@BenI. make that one point :O

2,999!
Haha it's like looking at an odometer at 99999, just before the 100,000 mile mark
