12:01 AM
I think Ben & Peter are solidly in. 3rd is likely to be Itamar.
Itamar is in a different timezone, so he can be available when the other two aren't

12:21 AM
What a great day on the site. Seven questions, and three of them were in completely new directions!!

I like that we've got an autodidact asking questions. Something I think this site can include, but a fine line to walk as well.
I hope the self-learners site on Area 51 ends up working. That'd be perfect.

Q: Is there any risk management tool at the enterprise level for features like sparse resources management?

Adeem ShahzadIs there any risk management tool at the enterprise level for features like sparse resources management?

The body is the same as the title.
That's kind of lazy.

Guess he didn't know what else to say.

I flagged it because it seems like he/she is asking for a product recommendation which is off topic on InfoSec.SE

Hope you didn't refer him to software rec. Not a quality question at all.

I didn't

1:33 AM
Even The wish geek will look at that question in disgrace.
@JourneymanGeek Take a look at this question.
reply: WHAT THE?

trying to make a video with OBS screen recoder
It's kind of hard

2:08 AM
@GypsySpellweaver I am from the Electronics Safety Inc.
But some salt and milk in your router to prevent dangerous levels of radiation.
While you are at it delete system42.
LOL! :D

Why don't I get points for upvoted comments any more? Is there some level at which comments become worthless, even if folks upvote them?
"worthless" was the wrong word. I still make comments because I clearly still think they have value.

2:44 AM

Q: Reputation for comments?

deletedI have seen many good comments that really improve the quality of questions and answers, and I think they deserve a bit of reputation (maybe just 1 point) for a upvote.

@BenI. ^^^

2:56 AM
Am I crazy? I thought I remembered there being 2 reputation for a comment upvote.
I am looking through meta, and it appears that the reason that my comments no longer give me reputation is because they never did in the first place, and I am entirely misremembering.

I thought they had given me rep as well, but haven't really paid attention to it.
I guess it's just that there are badges for comments, especially in meta.

We'll be darned close to the 150 questions RC wanted by this coming Tuesday. One week late isn't terrible.

3:24 AM
Plus, our stats have all been on the rise. The trendline is important.

Over all, I think it's looking positive.

For sure

@BenI. Been looking into my early rep awards, on other sites. Never got anything for comments. Found a bounty I never noticed getting though :/
And another one. Maybe I should be paying more attention.

I got 2 points for a comment the other day on a different site
Made me wonder as well

Which site?

3:33 AM
RaspberryPi.SE

Are you sure it wasn't for an approved edit?

Ahhh...good point
You're right

Ever since I got the 20 needed for chat, the only time I even notice rep is when I try to DV and it tells me I need >125 to do that.
Five of my sites I'm still <125 cause I only read them once in a while, and have no questions or answers to offer.

Same

I keep getting stray points for drive-by answers that I don't even remember giving until the points show up.
Like yesterday, got +10 for my easter egg post on MSE, last I knew it'd been DV'd
But I guess the one UV canceled the 2 DV in rep, even if the score is still -1

3:43 AM
Weird

@Peter You hadn't heard about the bimodal distribution of CS scores? I spent years and years thinking that was a thing.

Nope - never
I've only been doing tech for 2 years, teaching CS for 1 (previous English for 7)

Dang, 680/1562 of my rep on SU is just for edits! Maybe they ought to put a cap on that.

There is a cap - it's 1000 over the lifetime of your account on a site
How can you tell how much you got for edits?
I have a feeling I will never reach that 1000 on this site ;-)

crawl through the rep tab on my profile and add them up

3:50 AM
Oof!
@Peter I think I'm a better CS teacher for having started in a different field.

most were done in a short span of time, so it wasn't too hard

100%
That has been key

Actually, I think I'm really a better teacher overall

My background in English has been a huge asset

If anyone knows anyone looking for a CS teaching job around NJ, my school has a sudden opening (from another department), and my principle is moving the position to CS.
Best job I ever had by far :)

3:52 AM
It's been a lot of fun for sure
Whole new challenge

I have done a fair amount of professional copyediting, but I have never, not even once, been able to assign an essay to my students and give feedback to them all the way I wanted. I just drown in the time it takes to grade essays carefully.
How in the world do you grade an essay?
I have been thinking about proposing a musc teacher SE, but I know I would get as addicted to that as I have to this, and I am afraid my wife will divorce me if I take on a second one :P

Haha
You spend A LOT of time reading
It was mentally draining
Rewarding and fun but with a wife and family...challenging

But... I guess when I see the essay equivalent of my sample answer #1 from my bimodal distrubition answer, I just despair and don't know where to begin.

The key for essays is rubrics
Also, formative feedback
Give comments on the process but very few for the final grade
That ends up being more of an exercise for the teacher than the student

Have you played around with peer editing?

3:57 AM
Oh for sure
Sounds great
Never works out too well in the end
More work than its worth

What about writing in the style of ___?
That seems like a way to absorb style by osmosis for kids who don't read for fun.

I will admit teaching writing was not my strength
It's tough
My focus was more on philosophical, logical, abstract thinking
Hence why CS makes a lot of sense to me now

I'll admit that, at least philosophically, I don't think it should fall on English teachers to teach writing. At least at the HS level

Yep - it's everyone's job
Time for a late dinner/BBQ
Have a good night!

I'm heading to bed soon as well. G'night folks!

4:02 AM
Night

Interesting, the supposed "bimodal" curve seems to have been noticed in many, if not most, fields recently.
But...

Mornin

Morning Sir.

4:21 AM
Have I been knighted without my knowing (that was knowingly alliterative)

:O
Sir. Itamar Green?

Thou art the Green Knight.
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Middle English: Sir Gawayn and þe Grene Knyȝt) is a late 14th-century Middle English chivalric romance. It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folklore motifs, the beheading game and the exchange of winnings. The Green Knight is interpreted by some as a representation of the Green Man of folklore and by others as an allusion to Christ. Written in stanzas of alliterative verse, each of which ends in a rhyming bob and wheel, it draws on Welsh, Irish, and English stories, as well as the French chivalric tradition. It is...

I am the king. ;)

4:37 AM
Uneasy rests the head that wears a crown.

I think Itamar Green is the Green Knight in disguise.

Thin disguise it be. Seest thou not the crest of yon knight?

2 hours later…
6:51 AM
@GypsySpellweaver woah.

What? sheepish grin

When did you have time to learn old English??
Oh, and @Aurora0001, I think I found something about the SE system: why can't the mobile site be used to create new tags?

Like as not, 'twas in an earlier life. ;P

Increasingly more difficult to understand XD

7:07 AM
Ignore me, I can be obtuse.

Wow! Visits/day jumped by 100.

Sometime today they should do the update to the SEDE database. Then we can look at our stats in a lot more depth.

Of course, it would help if someone new the ins and outs of SEDE.

Knew?

7:20 AM
(k)new.

(k)night

night errant

Oh it isn't night here.
We're on sede!!

hence "errant"

Oh. I'm confused
Time to test queries

7:34 AM
errant: wandering off in search of adventure. The night has wandered off way to the west, looking for dark deeds.

Are you on literature.se? XD

Do you have a thesaurus nearby?

Or is it Gypsy extends Thesaurus?

7:36 AM
I think I own one, but couldn't avow that to be so.

I wish I could pull fancy words like that.

I think I've read entirely too much material in my off hours.

Weaving spells and weaving words. Well, we would assume what literary things I am versed in. As all can always see, alliteration all day.

Maybe you should change your moniker to reflect that propensity. :)

opening thesaurus
Maybe I should change my name to reflect alliteration.
That's the translation I came up with.

7:41 AM
Find a new name that is alliterative of your habit for alliteration.

Yep...

Why'd you retract your network flair?

Because my reputation on StackOverflow isn't relevant here.
I feel it's distracting, and maybe a bit of bragging. That's not what I want people to see, regardless of moderator nomination.

Yes and no. There is a connection through programming anyway, and as a mod candidate, your network rep shows that you've been active in SE in other areas prior to this site.

I suppose what I didn't like was the "Just for the fun of it".
Thanks. You gave me an idea.

7:48 AM
After all, my top site is Super User, and most of my rep there isn't for knowledge, it's for work
4 hours ago, by Gypsy Spellweaver
Dang, 680/1562 of my rep on SU is just for edits! Maybe they ought to put a cap on that.

If you look at my begining in StackOverflow, a lot of my rep (up till 2000) is edits.

That was amassed in a cleanup weekend where the site was transitioning to the full HTTPS standard and a lot of images needed to be converted. Other editors were also doing major work on tag edits. Most of the tags never got finished either. All the images did though :D

Oh. Well, that's a good opportunity

On one day I maxed out rep half way through the day.
Without any rep for votes at all

From December 7th 2016 and going back, you'll see ` edit +2` many many times in my reputation tab on StackOverflow
@GypsySpellweaver 100 edits?!

7:56 AM
I had 259 edits that day
Wow, the spreadsheet for the image work is still live.

What spreadsheet?

Because there were multiple people doing edits to the images, they made a spreadsheet on Google listing all the posts that needed to be checked. As someone checked them, they'd update the spreadsheet with the status so others would know not to work on that one.
That sheet is still there, in all its finished glory.

Teamwork at it's finest.
That's actually a brilliant idea

It worked. With tag edits you can see that the edit was done, sort of, just by pulling up the question.
With the image edits, you couldn't tell so easily

But I thought Community user did all those edits. Great to know it was humans

8:08 AM
The ones we had to do were the ones that Community couldn't fix, for whatever reason.
Actually the "fix" was through a database query, that was "credited" to Community as the "editor"
About ⅛ of them were dead links. Sometimes a new image could be found to replace the missing one. Sometimes it was a user's screenshot of the "problem" that couldn't even be guessed at from context. :( Most of that group got nuked.

Oh. Well, now we can do them here ;). (Yay we're on SEDE)

Do you have some experience with SEDE?

Yes, I have some experience with SEDE. Mainly by SQL but not only

That's what I was wondering. In my quick glance it looked like MySQL knowledge would be helpful in using SEDE. I didn't dig very far, since we weren't there yet.

I'll construct queries and save them for later use.

8:54 AM
@ItamarGreen It can't? Don't you just type the tag into the box then press space? I don't really use the mobile site, but that'd be my guess

@Aurora0001 nope. Tried to make but the system didn't like that.

Want me to add it for you?

I can't think of queries that might be interesting at this point. Maybe the reputation graph of each user, as a function of their q/a ratio. But that isn't so interesting ..
@Aurora0001 I'll be home soon, but if you want to then ok. Otherwise I'll do it when I get home.

It's done

Ok. Thanks!

9:08 AM
@ItamarGreen You could have done it yourself by switching to the "full version" of the site on the mobile device.

Hi there!
I just wanted to hop in shortly due to this question:

-2
Q: What is the future of React-JS?

Adem AdReact is an open-source JavaScript library from Facebook that makes it easy to create interactive UIs. What is the future of React-JS - i.e., how much development will be put into it in the future, and how important is it compared to other JS libraries? Should it be taught in a JS class?

12
Q: Why can't I create a new tag in Mobile?

yydlWhen I was using the mobile version of an SE site I got prompted with the error: new tags cannot be created from the mobile site. The tag 'sometag' is new. Why is this so?

@ItamarGreen ^^^

A few hours ago, it was edited by @heather and seems to be clearer to me now.
I think you could edit and even more moving it from "What is the future of React.JS?" to "Should I teach React.JS in a ... class?"
Should someone do this?

9:11 AM
Clearer in content, yes. However, I don't think Nostradamus is on the user list

Sorry I have to be complete un-humorous here: You say Nostradamus referring to prophecies of the future?

Even the answer to "should I" needs more background. Middle-school, university. Beginners, advanced. Switching from what other tools, or adding it to what tools? Etc.
Yes

Okay, so this is about what I thought: With some more details it could be (in my eyes) refactored to a question that asks whether it's a good idea to teach React to a certain group of students (determined by interest, skill). Can someone just reformulate the question and then add a comment asking for the background? Or shall we just comment? Or leave it alone and VTC?

I'd say to let it rest as is. It's on hold already, the user has been online since, but not in the past 11 hours. Give him time to read the comments, and the fix, and see if he will try to fix it.

Without any word from the original asker, edits can very well be conflicting the author's intent.

9:17 AM
Especially with so little intent in the original.
I'm willing to but effort into fixing a question where the OP has put effort into asking it. If he can't be bothered to but in some effort, then why should I do it for him?

@GypsySpellweaver exactly

Seems good to me. Chat is great, as it allows me to get the opinions of others before doing something I'm unsure whether it's good or not.
Thank you for helping.
:)

Thanks for being willing to help as well/

:)

That's all that's needed. People willing to do it, and people willing to help them.

9:23 AM
This question seems to be interesting:
1
Q: What is the best layout for a Middle School computer lab?

Neal ZupancicMy school director has given me the opportunity to redesign the layout of our school's IT lab to better suit my classes. Currently the computers are in the "inverted U" layout listed here so that I can monitor students' monitors but not their faces. I find that this makes classroom management d...

Sadly, I don't have the slightest experience on this, but I think I'll enjoy reading through the answers

3-sided, not 4-sided. Don't need shields to keep students from seeing other monitors. On faces the presentation area, the other 2 have to turn 120° to see presentations. Walking around teacher always has ⅔ of monitors in view.

9:39 AM
@Gypsy Do you want to put this in an answer?

Not really, my drawing ability isn't that good.
Have at it if you wish.

I'd do it but I promised myself to do 10 or more close vote review on SO each day. It helps just a bit, but there are still 9k close votes.

CV queue on SO is a lifetime job :/

Edit review queue makes me worry.
I don't have access to it, but I can see the disabled edit link and the posts on Meta, and this is enough for me to assume there are problems with it.

9:46 AM
@TuringTux You could also add that if floor space is at a premium, 5 sided works almost as well as 3 sided
The disabled on meta is because of low rep

I think I've badly formulated what I wanted to say: On the main SO site, edit queue is often full for some time now. On meta, people post about this issue and relate it to the new navbar
That's what I wanted to say

Oh. The new nav bar is a thing to adjust to. Folks are used to looking for notices in one place, now it's in another.
Teaching old dogs new tricks.
TBH, Since I don't have the rep to do reviews, I don't even know how to get there, except by typing the /review on the URL

When you have enough reputation a small icon will appear at the right in the navbar
Currently this is being discussed on So.meta

Then it should be there now, I can review documentation edits

Documentation is different - it doesn't make the icon appear for whatever reason.
Additionally, the item count is wrong: Sometimes there seems to be something in it, but when I open it, I'm just prompted there are now items matching my filters (I have no filters turned on).

9:58 AM
I think the SO toolbar looks better, not the same as is better however. I use enough different sites that I'm used to looking at the whole window anyway. Actually, I'm doing enough that I'm scanning the whole desktop anyway.

Wise words :) The main thing bugging me is that the stack exchange site selector has completely switched places.

I've had that happen before, on SO doc review, and on SU First/Late post reviews
The fact that it looks like the hamburger menu helps. Yea, I know it's the Stack icon, but resemblance helps.

Yes, this is good.

I run with 6 virtual desktops on two monitors. Only one tell-tale linked to SE, and the ping for chat. If I take too long to notice an SE inbox item, my phone will chirp at me.

10:23 AM
Cool :)

It's what I do

Okay, I gotta go now
See you o/

10:43 AM
It's rather interesting that our top tag is . I suppose it's not that surprising, as introducing students to this field (as well as any field) is on of fields with the greater variance in approaches and methods.

Also the hardest to figure out if the techniques are working.

exactly.

Once they have the basics understood, they at least know enough to know how to ask a question for clarification.

"because bigger kids monopolized the 2 Apple ][s at my high school"
is it possible this should be :"because bigger kids monopolized the 2 Apple IIs at my high school"?

You liked that?
Nope

10:50 AM
I was wondering about ][...

Apple ][s is standard

what? I have never heard of that.

It's an attempt to transliterate the logo

in what way?

You have the Apple][, the Apple //e and the Apple IIgs
It's a 'cultural' thing :/
7
Q: How did Apple's 'CYA' chip function to "Control Your Apple"?

Brian HUnlike the original Apple ][, the Apple IIGS was built from highly-integrated custom chips. Among these were the Mega II and the CYA (which, apparently stands for "Control Your Apple"). From what I have read, all the discrete logic that made up the original Apple ][, plus the various enhancement...

10:56 AM
oh

11:34 AM
who wrote this?

Good morning everyone

12:06 PM
@ItamarGreen Long ago, and in a galaxy far away, when the Force was strong....
Actually, I don't know. Why?

because the names at that section are a funny coincidence if it's just copied from other sites.

Probably one of the SE team; just a co-incidence, it seems

It's standard copy. Just luck we have a recognizable name to match it too.

a very amusing one.
@GypsySpellweaver 2 names...

Odds are it was written by either Peter Smith, or the fellow sitting across from him in the office.
Yikes, time is sure flying. It's 12:12 already. I'm off for a quick nap.
Y'all have a grand time. :D

12:19 PM
I got back to fixing my rep curve query on SEDE. Turns out the rep on our site has a huge drop off at 200.

well, those with assoc. bonus, and those who committed and didn't show much activity cause the high counts in the lower rep zone

If you don't show up, you just won't have an account at all

I removed everyone with rep 101 and 1 from my query

well, those with assoc. bonus, and those who committed and then weren't very active, cause the high counts in the lower rep zone
oh. Why didn't the sede query I saw at first show that? o.o
oh. nevermind. sorry, I was looking at a different query I made (well, tried to make, anyway)

Also, an interesting thing that I found when making a days since account creation/rep graph is that there isn't really a correlation between how long someone has been on the site and their rep.

12:51 PM
hey @Aurora0001 how id the revision system managed? is it a stack?

I think it's just an SQL table

Damn. It could really fit in with my answer on that new question, if it were a stack,

hello

The stack question is becoming a HNQ. Let's hope it stays there.

1:07 PM
i don't know if you guys have already done this, but have you advertised on any computer science forums or anything like that?
or possibly, is there a blog in the field you could request an advertisement on, or a shout-out from?

I wonder when's the first bounty gonna pop. Is it a good idea to give a question popularity (if it already has a fair bit) by offering a bounty?

@ItamarGreen well, with the stack question, it's a bit early - I'm pretty sure you can only give a bounty two days after a question's been posted, or something like that.

@heather well, there's reddit. But I think you should check questions on the meta site. I recall 1 or 2 questions about that.
@heather I wasn't referring to the stack question... that's not eligible for bounty for 2 more days. But I was only wondering...

1:44 PM
thoughts about creating a new tag "" to refer to computer architecture?

2 hours later…
3:20 PM
@heather It's a good idea

@BenI. the tag has been created.
Is there anything in particular I can do to help this site? (I.e., do you need volunteers for anything, etc?)

I noticed :) But I still thought to reply. It's definitely a useful tag
So, as far as I can see, we have an extremely active core community, so virtually everything gets answered. Our main needs are questions (in site) and outreach (off site)
For 1, you started helping today :D

I've been trying to go through the Area 51 definition stage questions =)
in terms of outreach, what areas specifically haven't you covered? I posted a community ad on a couple of sites already, and I can add the ad (heh) to more relevant sites, but I assume there are more things you want to do besides ads?

Oh, yeah - thank you for doing that! I joined and upvoted on physics, and I was already a member on the other site
We probably should target softwareengineering as well

already added an ad there =)

3:26 PM
Oh - I didn't realize. I just upvoted
Did you create more than those 3?

i did raspberry pi, TeX, crypto, mathematica, ask ubuntu, theoretical cs
i was debating putting one on chemistry and one on bio since i already did physics

You should always post the links here, because then we all go and upvote them so they dispay :)

they are listed on the advertising thread
thesecretmaster added them this morning (?)

The one within each site?
Oh, hey, yes they are!
I missed that.
How many upvotes are required for an ad to start showing?

6

3:30 PM
That just made my day :)

what did? the number?

No, your ad posts and @thesecretmaster's meta thread :)

okay, i just added it to chemistry and biology =)

@heather If you just suggest an edit to the meta post, it'll get accepted

@thesecretmaster, the edit button is grayed out, i can't click on it.

3:33 PM
Hey @thesecretmaster, how do you get to those stats pages? I was trying to update your post. (Since you're here, it's better that you do, but I'm still curious)

Hey guys o/

hello @TuringTux
oh, can't believe I missed Unix & Linux, let me add an ad there...

@BenI. it's linked at the bottom of the ad question

Greetings @TuringTux (aka Aurora0001 Brother. ;D)

;D
The Mathematics ad is active now

3:36 PM
Oh nice

Do you want to edit that in, @thesecretmaster?

I edit every few days to let new questions be at the top

Oh, okay.
I was just collecting current changes, but this means they're not needed now..

just a quick note, the one labelled "math" probably should be called "mathematica" to avoid confusion with "mathematics"

I need more sleep :D

3:41 PM
To any fathers in the room: Happy Father's Day! =)
in terms of off-of-SE advertising @BenI. what exactly needs to be done?

We're just looking for communities. I sent messages to the CSTA chapter I am a member of, and made a post on reddit's /r/cseducation
Peter made a twitter account here twitter.com/cs_educators

One question on those Community Ads: As they need to be upvoted on the sites where we want them to show, I could use my association bonus, register me and upvote it on each site we've proposed one. However, this feels a bit like association bonus abuse to me, as I don't know anything about the sites (and also not whether this could be interesting for the users there). What do you think?

I tried to post on /r/compsci, but it was blocked as spam. The mods there (predictably) didn't respond to my message

i think you can upvote on meta with or without the association bonus @TuringTux, as long as you've joined the site.

And Ellen posted to a series of professional groups that she was a part of, which brought us a big bump of users during private beta

3:45 PM
@BenI., hmm. Are there any blogs whose owners you could ask to carry an ad, or give the site a shout-out?

thesecretmaster (and now, with you) has been organizing community ads

Really? Oh, I didn't know this (and now it's too late to test ;)). So, however, even without association bonus the question remains for me: Is it ethical to register on a site just to upvote one ad?

So far, that's what promotion/outreach has been done
Oh, and Mike Zamansky has linked to us a few times now. I think he's tentatively excited about this site
(He has a pretty popular blog with cs educators)

i was looking at the Area51 stats, and it seems that all answer statistics are good, but amount of visits/users/questions (all connected, of course) are poor - how could we move up cs edu in google search results, to try to increase site visits?
also, side note - is anyone here on information security or emacs?

IIRC, Google has a list of cs education resources somewhere - I meant to email them to mention that we now exist

3:47 PM
I'm a passive user of Sec.SE...

@TuringTux, could you post an ad there?
(i can join if you don't want to, i just thought i'd see if anyone was already on that site)

@TuringTux I don't think it's unethical. Isn't this exactly what the community ads program is for? To advertise other SE communities?

Oh, okay.
I would find it better nevertheless if you could join, @heather

I will admit to not fully understanding the community ad program, though

My reputation is again just association bonus + two edits
